Bill Maher: Obama's Debate Performance Suggests He Took My Million Dollars And Spent It On Weed

No, that's silly.

But soon.

Make sure you see the shift in polling which National Journal terms a "slight change."

As Andy suggested in the earlier thread, there has been a "slight change" in the reality of shit.

Yeah, I didn't think so, either. I am quite sure he would prefer to dominate but just couldn't quite git 'er done when facing a competent adult.

70 Barack Obama did not have a great performance in the debate on Wednesday for the simple reason that he has never had a great performance against any Republican in a debate. Ever.

The left came to believe Obama was a fantastic debater for the same reason they came to believe that Joe Biden was a foreign policy genius. They looked at a bunch of other evidence that they thought must mean it's true and kept repeating it to themselves--without looking for any real record of the guy excelling at what was supposed to be his specialty.

At best, he performed well against Hillary Clinton in debates where his core beliefs weren't questioned. His last two debates against McCain were draws. McCain appeared to have a better grasp on policy in his first debate in '08, but merely didn't get anywhere because people thought he came across as too mean/less likeable. Obama didn't face tough races prior to this, because his main Republican opponents dropped out due to scandals. In those races, the debates didn't matter.

This guy has rarely faced tough interviews and press conferences over the past four years. He's rarely had anybody argue the core assumptions of his politics, to his face, over the last two decades.

Repeat after me: There was no reason to believe this guy would be a great debater.

To take his remark further, I'll suggest that Romney was in the ring with two men, and that with that one punch, one of his opponents was out of the fight. If Lehrer would have been more engaged, he would have been accused of simply trying to protect his job.

121 Lemme tell you, this economy is still in the crapper. Don't let anyone shine you on about that. I don't have a gigantic circle of friends and family, but I have them in several states - KY, FL, OH, IL, CA, TN, NJ to name a few, and they tell me things are terrible pretty much everywhere.

Kentucky is just a basket case. My brother is a CPA there and his practice has fallen by HALF in the last 4 years - small business clients that have shut their businesses, people doing their own taxes now just to save the $200. My high school boyfriend had to close his home decor shop that he had owned for 27 years and it shattered his marriage and made him an alcoholic. Another friend who had a successful business making and selling marching band uniforms and doing band trips is barely making it now because broke schools are cutting out band and families can't afford those trips anymore. His wife was laid off as a music teacher because music was cut from the school where she taught. The U. of Kentucky has had its state funding cut every year since 2001 because the state is broke. And yes, the War on Coal is not going over very well there.

It pisses me off that we never hear about these solid red or blue states and how they are suffering. I really don't give a shit that GM was "saved," it was saved with billions of our dollars that could have been better used in other states instead of buying Ohio and Michigan for Obama.

The only reason I can think why it is not being hammered everywhere is that conservatives tend to equate entitled with the folks who think they are entitled to an equal share in American prosperity just because they live here too, but I don't think we should let this spew slide just because of that word.

142 Plouffe is burning through millions a day, trying the same carpet-bombing ad campaign that he thinks won the election for him in 2008. He's a fool. The campaign in 2008 was won the day John McCain suspended his campaign. The voters saw him as a doddering old fool, and then they took a look at Sarah Palin who would be his replacement, and the bottom fell out. McCain foolishly went with the federal funding and had almost nothing to spend against the Obama onslaught in October.

This year Obama is running against a quality opponent, who picked a great running mate with high favorability ratings, and has raised a shitload of money himself. The ad bombing worked a little bit, right up until Wednesday when Ohio and Florida voters got to see the real Mitt Romney.

Of course they will stack the audience-participants with Obama-leaners and the most repugnant conservative-leaning people they can find.

The questions will, of course, be balanced.

For examples:

A question for Obama will be by a sweet old lady who is worried about affording her glaucoma medicine.

And a question for Mitt will be from a white, fat middle-aged man who is worried that prayer in school is being replaced with theories on evolution.

But with realism and pragmatism. Not like Obama's "I can fix everything even though I have no record of accomplishments in my life" spiel.

"158... 142...

Bullshit. McCain and McCain alone lost that race. Ayott, Haley, and Cruz spoke at the R convention this year. None of whom would be in office but for Sarah Palin. All three have said so. No way Palin tanked that election. It was McCain and McCain alone."

The polls are unusually clear on this. When Palin was added to the ticket, McCain took the lead. The lead remained until the financial system time bomb went off, and Republicans got the blame.

McCain fought with one hand behind his back. He brought the proverbial knife to a gun fight.

Hopefully, Mitt's team is coaching him on the finer points of reframing questions a la Gingrich's way of dealing with the loaded questions from the media. If he can pull that off, he can take even the most hostile question in a direction that's favorable to him.

183 I think Romney is going to surprise us in the townhall style debate. I think the format will feel a lot like an LDS service.

-----

Yes and no. The regular Sunday meetings are generally talks from congregants but sometimes we'll have an all-Stake meeting (several congregations) where the Stake President (which Romney was once) will take questions that were submitted in advance which range the gamut from: "Why did the ward boundaries have to change?" to "Why do some people always get the hard callings?" to "Why aren't the young men dating more?" It's not always an audience friendly to the responses. Romney should do just fine.

I agree though with another commenter who mentioned a shareholders meeting. That seems much more common to his experience and would be pretty tough. He should be fine.

184 BTW Romney response site has great video of local news in St. Pete last

fired up for Romney, showed some others singing na-na-na-Obama-goodbye.
Couple of people said they would not have come until they saw Romney
kick Obama's ass in the debate.

186 #158 I know this always starts an argument about Palin and I didn't want to do that. I like her very much. I just go by what I heard from actual voters in my area of suburban Philly. Lots of folks, especially seniors, told me point blank they would not vote for McCain because of her. They're all voting for Romney this year. I've been involved in politics for 40 years, and I've never heard people say they were voting against a candidate because of his running mate - not even Dan Quayle in 1988 or Geraldine Ferraro in 1984. But they did with Palin.

214 Future Debate.

Obama: blah blah blah 47%! blah blah blah.

Romney
This point keeps coming up because of deliberate media
misinterpretation of a conveniently edited illegal tape from the
(air-quotes) non-partisan Jimmy Carter, but let me take a second to
address it directly.

There are people that feel that luck
is the only significant element in success. That hard work, and even the
willingness to work, aren't crucial. The crucial piece being government
involvement and coddling and inculcating the idea that "You didn't
built that!" And that you aren't entitled to the opportunity to succeed in the US.

For
these people, taxes are a vehicle to punish the lucky and reward the
victims of their oppression. So, as I said on this infamous tape, the
message of simple, fair taxation doesn't reach people in this group. One slice of this group feels -they- were so lucky that other people need to be punished. And another slice has been convinced that victimhood is a badge of honor.

They're the post-modern Democrats - no longer the blue-collar Democrats. So now you're going to have the choice between (motion towards self) hard work (motion to Obama) or pure luck.

It actually occasioned a discussion after church about praying for enemies l I think Obama IS an enemy of the US but Jesus said we must pray that God would bless our enemies. I guess it's my prayer than God would bless Obama with a clue by four. and turn him to the light.

Unfortunately for her, that stage didn't last. Even a platoon of makeup artists and hair stylists can't help you if you keep polishing off pints of Cherry Garcia.

Well, they are structured but not rigidly so. First Sunday of the month is Fast Sunday (we have what my non-member affectionately calls "Open-mike Sunday"--members come to the front and share testimonies at will--it's hilarious because we're not really a showy faith and sometimes it feels like tight-rope walking and something vaguely Baptist (for instance "Amen!" would never be shouted out during a meeting) The other 3 Sundays go as follows: Two youth speakers, and then Two assigned adult speakers (often spouses given similar topics). Songs are interlarded. Opening and closing prayer, etc. Then we have two more hours...

Of course, twice a year (this weekend!) we have the best thing ever. Church in pajamas. The church leadership in SLC broadcasts four meetings over the course of Sat and Sun. We make cinnamon rolls.
