Jim Lehrer: Yes, I Didn't "Control" Two Grown Men Vying For the Presidency. So What?

The media is big on "control," isn't it? They always want one of their own subtly guiding things.

Jim Lehrer has a few words in response to those who thought he let President Obama and Mitt Romney ramble on and roll over him in Wednesday’s presidential debate:

“So what?”

...

Q: People could see that they talked over you and went past the time limits that you were trying to enforce. What was your reaction as that was happening?

A: It was frustrating as it began happening, when they didn’t answer the questions directly and they went over time. But I kept reminding myself: “Hey, wait a minute. Waaait a minute. This isn’t about rules. This is about the reality of the exchange of the two candidates.” So I just backed off. . . . I had no problem doing that. Yes, there were times when I pushed them, and sometimes they ran over and ignored me and all that sort of stuff. So what? I mean, it isn’t about my power, my control or whatever. It was about what the candidates were doing, what they were talking about and what impression they were leaving with the voters. That’s what this is about. It’s not about how I felt about things.

There were several minutes in the middle of the debate where I just backed off and they just talked. And I thought those were the magic moments.

We understand why the media insists it must have "a firmer hand on the till," as one critic insisted: Just as that metaphor suggests, they wish to guide the vessel safely to port.

I hate moderators and I love Jim Lehrer's version of it. Here's how the media cheats: There are some questions which Obama can't bring up, but would like asked of Mitt Romney. Culture war type questions -- they hurt liberals, too.

Obama can't bring up contraception as a question for Romney. Because doing so hurts Obama. A lot of swing-vote Catholics are not happy with his mandate.

But if a "neutral third party" badgers Romney about it, while not mentioning it to Obama... best of both worlds for the liberal cause: Romney gets hit with a swing issue that might lose him some voters, but Obama doesn't lose any of his voters over the same wedge issue.

And that's what they mean by control.

38 Well, the last thing the media wants is a debate where the two candidates are allowed to say what they want when they want, allowed to rebut each other, and allowed to debate in a classic sense.

What they want is a tightly regimented series of specific questions and answers the media is in command of, and no other thoughts or statements. That way they can direct the narrative and how the topics come up.

Look at the fit they had (and Gwen Ifill is still bitching about) when Sarah Palin basically said "you can ask whatever you want but I'm going to talk about taxes."

41 Jim Lehrer, in his passivity, showed America what a presidential debate should be, instead of what it has been for 50 years.

Even when it helped our side (Bernard Shaw asking Dukakis about the death penalty), the concept of journalists determining what's important and making candidates address them, and not each other, was the wrong way to do things.

For once, Romney and Obama went after each other, and the truth of who was better was revealed to the American people.

48 I really think this is an important point, because the two defenses of Obama that seem to be sticking are "Romney Lied" and "Lehrer was a terrible Moderator."

Now the "Romney Lied" thing is something they would have said regardless. The "Lehrer was bad" is true, but in exactly the opposite way they mean.

And even Lehrer's response buys into the same premise- that he was somehow a "neutral" third party.

That's certainly true, but that doesn't mean that Republican candidates haven't succeeded in those conditions. Bush basically torpedoed Gore in a town hall debate (hosted by Jim Lehrer) when Gore thought he was John Wayne for a second and Bush showed him to be the simpering fool we all know he was.

Bush also came roaring back in the town hall after getting slapped by Kerry in the first debate. Bush's town hall performance, and Cheney's demolition of Edwards, set the equilibrium of the race, and polls from then on matched the final outcome.

Lowery says he doesn’t personally support the president because he’s
not addressing issues important to the black community. He said he was

Lowery says Raymond added, “We’ve been watching you, and since you don’t support Obama, we’ll deal with you,” before hanging up.

If a side can't agree on seating the others audience participants, that party is "locked out" of the debate and it proceeds with only one participant -- the one who did approve enough of the other side's participants.

Also, it's easier for a moderator (or "moderator") to exert control when the candidates ramble along or wander off on some random tangent. Romney didn't do that. I have never had any worries about my future VP Paul Ryan. Either this will be a bloodbath of Old Joe Fables rooted out and exposed like a perv in a park wearing a trench coat; or Ryan will politely try to state the facts, and respectfully not reveal to the world how out of it our current VP really is. 166 Notice the similarity between this meme that Lehrer didn't adequately "control" the debate, and the philosophy recently expressed by the NYT new public editor (which echoes in turn one of the premises of Sorkin's liberal fantasy Newsroom show). I think Ace had a post on that NYT editor's remarks, too lazy to look for it.

That (ridiculous) premise is: news has gone wrong and abdicated its responsibility by being *too* fair-minded, *too* "unbiased," striving for "objectivity" by presenting both sides of an issue, both sides of an argument. Instead, journalists have the duty to tell their readers *what to believe*, who's right and who's wrong, what's true and what's false (NB "true" and "false" are here meant to cover terrain much vaster than just mere humble facts)-- as opposed to letting their readers make up their own minds (and potentially going astray, and of course we all know what that means… rightward).

So I guess now this ridiculous (and, false, reprehensible, corrupt) premise-- or rationalization-- doesn't just apply to news, to commentary or reportage *after* a debate, but *during the debate itself*. During the debate *itself*, moderators must be sure to let the audience know what and whom to believe. Can't let the debate be a…. debate. Even a debate, now, can't allow for the presentation of two or more side/ arguments, letting the audience judge between them as they will. Even a debate now must have the form of a NYT new article. Romney quote, Obama quote, and the omniscient news narrator (moderator) telling the audience what they *must* conclude (i.e. Obama's right and Romney's wrong). In fact, they have they duty to *cut off* Romney and inhibit/ prevent him from presenting his side/argument, if that side/ argument is (by the omniscient news narrator/ journalist's lights) wrong.

(Just like they have a duty not to present the AGW skeptic or "denialist" POV in the NYT's pages.)

Remember, this is what the NYT public editor said: presenting both sides of an argument or controversy in its news pages in an effort to appear fair-minded or objective, is the way news has gone *wrong*.

Can't let the readers/ audience get confused. Must control what and whom they believe and don't believe.

Control.

It's fluking creepy.

I was arguing the same thing with people yesterday, after evenright-wingers like VDH took issue with Lehrer. The specific format of this debate required that the candidates question each other. It's not Lehrer's fault that Obama laid down on the job and if he'd jumped in to fill the void, he'd have been pilloried for bias. He wasn't even on the time, so I'll cry foul on that, but the idea that he should have been interrogating Romney when the whole point of the format was to let Obama do that is bunk. Obama failed to understand the dynamics, or just didn't have the savvy to take the questions re: 47%, Bain etc to Mitt. Not Lehrer's fault.

176 The problem is that modern politicians have no skill in Lincoln-Douglas style real debating. They operate with canned talking points, teleprompters and cherry-picked, pre-planned agendas. I'll give most candidates on the right more credit as debaters because they can't get away with just name-calling, even among their base. Democrats, on the other hand. And Obama goes without saying - his coccoon includes the media themselves, so it's no surprise he has no strategy when he's in an actual debate. As I said to folks yesterday, it's sure as hell obvious that his legal resume included little to no litigation or trial work, because he turtles whenever someone disagrees with him.

178 "a firmer hand on the till,: That doesn't mean what you think it means, unless you're attempting a pun. Otherwise it is a firm hand on the tiller. A till would be where the money is kept.

179 It's "having your hand on the tiller", not on the "till". A tiller is the handle you use to move the rudder on a small boat, so the phrase is about having control and giving direction.

180 LOL! Freudian Slip Alert!

"We understand why the media insists it must have "a firmer hand on the till," as one critic insisted: Just as that metaphor suggests, they wish to guide the vessel safely to port."

It's TILLER for vessels. TILL is where you keep the ready cash. A firmer hand on the till, indeed.

181 If that guy on a bad acip trip would call Mitt, he'd have a whole troop of Mormom social workers and EMTs and household help there within 15 minutes! Within a year, he'd be happy, with a good job, and married with a baby on the way.

182 Don't think Jim Lehrer wouldn't tilt the field if he could and wanted to. He just didn't want to. Why? Because he's had enough. And he likes the drama. And "Obama is just so deadly dull, I can't fuckin' do it anymore. So there it is. I said it. Suck it."

183 I thought the Taiwanese animation was a little strong on Jim Lehrer. But, perfect for Mittens, chainsaw hacking to bits, teh One, complete with blood spattering the audience.

184 It's not like I didn't try to man the tiller. The thing is, my tag-team partner was out of position every time I went for the tag.

185 ” So I just backed off. . . . I had no problem doing that."

That's mighty hetrosexual of you there Jim boy.

186 I have real respect for Jim Lehrer.

At least he realized that he is supposed to get them talking and then get out of the way. If people don't like what one or both of them did, use that to judge them, not Jim Lehrer.
