The Mile High Massacre

keepcalmfinishhim.jpg

Bryan Preston, who linked that cool gif above, has one warning about Romney's domination: There's no place of Obama to go but up.

Romney was so dominant that he can only get worse from here. Obama was so awful that he can only improve.

Do you see what the mainstream media can do with those trajectories?

They’re already writing the script at the New York Times. Now Obama just has to look better in the next debate than he looked last night.

So the advice for Romney: Treat tonight like a loss and do even better next time.

Weekly Standard runs down some takeaways from the Mile High Massacre, primarily: What the hell was Obama or his debate prep team thinking?

I think @exjon said something like this: The problem is that Barack Obama was prepared to combat his favorite opponent -- a strawman. But a genuine man showed up, and he didn't have flint enough to set a real man on fire.

Obama was genuinely surprised to learn that Mitt Romney's plan has always been to reduce rates while keeping taxation revenue-neutral. He had prepared a Strawman Bonfire. It turns out he wasn't alone in that ignorance: Watching CNN, I was shocked to discover these "reporters" who presume to inform The Common Man were learning this for the first time, too.

I don't bother linking the irrelevant liberal Andrew Sullivan anymore but I will strongly encourage you to drink his sweet tears. And he blubbers up a lot of them.

He doesn't think Obama won a single exchange, and started calling it a "rolling calamity" for Obama fairly early. Then his mood got bluer when Romney got even better, and Obama got even worse.

Hot Air runs down a lot of stuff you probably know, but maybe you missed some.

On Intrade, Obama lost 11% in one bad night.

CNN's flash poll has lots of good news for Romney. Registered voters (D+4) say he won 67-25, the highest margin of victory since CNN started flashpolling debates.

As far as "edged your vote in one direction:" Romney 35% more likely, Obama 18% more likely. 47% say no effect.

Did Obama do better or worse than you expected? Better, 21%; worse, 61%.

Romney -- better, 81%; worse 10%. (And that's just liberals who are lying, or who are trying to express outrage at all the LIES Romney told.)

In all areas the debate was about -- economy, leadership, taxes, health care, debt -- Romney won the night by fat margins, in the fifties to Obama's forties. Romney's lead isn't so great on health care, but he is in fact leading on Democratic issue, 52-47.

On favorable/unfavorable, Obama split 49/49, while Romney actually goosed an already decent number (which surprised me) further up to 56/42. (!!!)

On who is more likable, they're tied 45/46, with Romney with that (very MoE) edge.

So... I dunno. Romney's ahead on likability?

Finally -- among independents (not all RV's), Romney decimated Obama, 75-17.

Seventy-five to 17.

Good Lord.

If you haven't watched Frank Luntz's focus group of dunces well-informed and dutiful undecided citizens who make all the correct decisions, in time, I suggest you rectify that oversight posthaste.

It was a good night for Romney, and he now has the momentum, if not quite yet the lead. That'll take a few days.

These polls are so good for Romney I expect the left to indulge in a bit of Poll Trutherism and suggest that naturally the audience was more Republican than Democrat because, I don't know. Whatever.

Even if that's so -- even the Huffington Post declares Romney the winner. It's not as if people who didn't watch the debate will be confused about the outcome of it. It's very clear who won. Even James Carville admits Romney wanted to be there, and Obama didn't.

Can Romney keep the momentum? Well, he's giving a "major" foreign policy speech next week, and of course Obama's best hope of reversing the momentum is... a Joe Biden victory over Paul Ryan.

Plus, the unemployment numbers for September come out Friday. We don't know if they'll be good or bad, but they're rarely good, and we haven't seen any signals suggesting that help for Obama is coming on this front.

This could be a very, very bad two weeks for Obama.

Blame the Moderator! The big liberal line is that Romney beat up both Obama and poor Jim Lehrer. The wanted Jim Lehrer to do what journalists do most of the time, protect Dear Leader from criticism.

Of course Obama actually spoke for four more minutes than Romney.

However, this argument is about juicing the refs for the next game -- because they know Biden is weak, and now know Obama needs some special TLC, they're trying to get the moderators to dog Ryan and Romney. They know their candidates aren't up to it, so they want the press, as usual, to ride to their rescue.

This will intensify all this week-- the calls will be for moderators to vigorously challenge the Republicans in order to aid Obama and Biden.

Expect it.

See, her vote is precious, and she doesn't want to "waste" it on a "loser". That's my theory on her.

126 To those fretting about Obama's response in the next 2 debates:

Scholars have basically shown that the 1st debate is the one that moves people the most, particularly undecided voters.

Bush was way better than Kerry in debates 2-3, but people remembered debate 1, and that was the difference between a 7 point victory and a 2 point victory.

The only things that ever moved people in 2nd or 3rd debates were the following two examples:

1) "There is not Soviet domination of Eastern Europe under a Ford Administration"

Even with that blunder, Ford came back from down 25% in July and damn near won it - if the election was a week later, we would've had a Bush/Gore split.

2) "I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I will not exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."

No one, EVER, will be as good as Reagan in that regard.

TFG is fucked

Assuming some grand crisis doesn't force Obama to reluctantly decline to be part of any further debates in order to do the hard work of being president... we'll be lucky if there is anyone in the crowd with a question that isn't an Obama shill.

They'll probably trot out the down's syndrome woman with a carefully memorized phonetically pronounced question.

166 Another hard hit that Romney landed was asking TFG why, if raising taxes in 2010 was such a bad idea, it's now a good idea with a weaker economy in 2012 than in 2010.

168 Yeah, the Jim Lehrer bitching is ridiculous.

He did lose control, but that gave us what the American people have been craving for a half century - two candidates going after each other, rather than adhering to the media's preferred agenda.

Romney seemed to take notes from my boy Newt in challenging moderation.

The closer a debate turns into an actual contest between two candidates, the better off the public is.

Or whatever it takes. But, they'll have it together soon enough to start doing serious damage control. They were just taken off-guard tonight.

174 I'm watching a re-run of my local news now (SF Bay Area). They are bending over backwards and showing as few clips as possible to characterize this as a "no-winner" debate. And when they admit that Romney was strong, they characterize it as "bullying" that the moderator "totally failed to reign in".

So the story for tomorrow appears to be:
Mitt Wins by Cheating

Expect plenty of variations on this theme.

More of the same: Romney lied all night and the chickens will come home to roost when the fact-checkers let him have it. Obama let Romney spew all his lies unchecked so he can pounce on them some other time. Romney was a jerk and didn't come off likeable, while Obama stayed calm and didn't give whitey the satisfaction of an "angry black man" stereotype.

178 Bernard Shaw asking if Dukakis would support the rape and murder of his wife was absurd and completely out of line.

Bush won the first time around because Lehrer asked the same questions as he did now, and let the candidates reveal themselves to the American public. Gore oversighed and showed what a douchebag he was.

By and large, the American people have been well-served by the debates and chose not only the more charismatic candidate but the candidate who was best for the country at the time. And let's be honest: if McCain won in 2008, we'd be looking at a 60-40 Hillary win this year.

When Romney wins 300+ electoral votes, we will once again trust in the wisdom of the American people that wisely rejected Al Gore and John Kerry.

203 My take on Althouse (I could very well be wrong): I bet she'll vote for Romney. That's been my guess for a long while. The woman isn't stupid.

My guess is this "undecided" shtick is in large part a performance, a long-drawn-out strip tease performance.

Tonight's debate was very inconvenient for her, because it makes it harder (and more ridiculous) to maintain her "genuinely undecided" pose.

But who knows. There's some deep-seated issues she has about race that make her unusually nutty on the topic.

Posted by: lael at October 04, 2012 02:59 AM (QSB5R)

204 After watching the debate, my question is: was Obama even there? He was so bloodless, so lackluster, so dispassionate. The only time he seemed interested was when he had to talk about Obamacare (which Romney skillfullyrebutted). Obama was truly AWFUL. It was like Obama just sent in the empty chair to debate for him.

Mitt was pretty wonderful himself, but he came off even greater because O couldn't refute Mitt's facts and he looked like he could barely bother himself to even muster up a lie. And whenever he was caught in one, Mitt nailed him.

I loved Mitt's "zingers" (they were really more like one-liners); they worked. One of my faves was when he said he will cut funding for PBS even tho he "likes Big Bird". That one really worked, imo, b/c it conjured up a visual. People remember things when more than one of their senses are engaged. The humor also makes it memorable.

207 You know, as I first watched the debate, I thought Mitt was doing a good job, and Obama a poor job, but didn't think it was going to be a knockout. But by the end, you just saw how masterful a debate it was for Mitt. He came in, powerfully and steady and just drowned Obama in fact, leadership, and enthusiasm. It was like a boxing match where a guy just works a perfect rhythm of jabs and body blows, never even going for an on the button K.O., and drops the guy from the working over to the body in the 12th of 15. It was perfectly calibrated to walk the fine line between too aggressive to attract the dopes in the middle, or switchable Dems, but aggressive enough to fire up the base. Working in the red meat of the Declaration and Constitution and mentioning the 10th amendment made us conservatives feel better and nore enthusiastic about him, and the 'I was a Governor who had to work with an 87% (D) legislature' bespoke his ability to get it done to the mushy middle that thinks our big problem is gridlock. A work of art, really. And I was hoping for a memorable zinger to be the lucky on-the-jaw punch. This was so much better.

Ann Althouse had some rather weird rant up earlier on Instapundit about how the five year old Obama video, and the Obama phone lady somehow makes me 'ugly'. Obama, and his supporters can trot out accusations of racism each and every day...no one, no word, no action is safe. 'Golf' is racist, 'work' is racist, and Althouse's position on all this seems to be that we should all meekly cower in fear of that accusation.

As Joe Biden would say, "In a word, 'fuck that noise'. And welcome to West Carolina!".

2. Obama was tired and off his game due to his " hands on" style of leadership and the new violence in the turkey region. The man just can't stop presidentin'!
3. The media knows that Obama really was the winner- but it is better for ratings if the election looks close.
4. Obama is masterfully setting up a " rope a dope" situation- and mitt fell into the sublime trap set for him by Obama.
5. Obama let mitt win the first debate to lull Romney into a false confidence- he will use the second debate to wound Romney by speaking truth to power, and the third debate will be used by Obama to inflict the mortal wound on Romney.
I am not making any of this up by he way: I am wiping tears away from laughing at those fucking retards and their conspiracy nonsense about how Obama is laying out traps for " Willard". Comedy gold on that site.

231 ________________________________

Ace,

Serious Question:
How will the Mainstream Media continue to defend the president's policies now that it has been demonstrated in their faces that even the president can't defend his own positions?

Answer:
They won't.

Something went terribly wrong in the myopic world of the Mainstream Media tonight. But it will take a few days for it settle into their collective psyche.
You see, it's been understood since before he was elected president that Barrack Obama is a genius politician and orator. Quick on his feet! Nimble in his thinking! Always six or seven moves ahead in a three dimensional game of chess while everyone else is playing checkers! A once in a lifetime visionary who will lead us on the True Path to healing the nation's wounds and setting it on a course of transcendental flourishing.

Tonight all those myths were exposed as utter sham. They were blown to bits right in front of everybody's eyes. But his defacto-cheerleaders in the press haven't fully realized it yet. Some of them may never be able to consciously admit to themselves what happened. But on a subconscious/instinctive level, it will begin to sink in. Their mental paradigms are shifting even as they sleep.
How could this have happened? How could a safer than milk square like Romney have obliterated the Master at his own game?
They won't be able to convince themselves that Obama didn't have time to adequately prepare for the debate. - What, he couldn't take time off from his busy schedule of non-stop campaign fund raising?

Very soon the press will begin to suspect the truth. Either the president's policies have failed as disastrously as Romney claims, or president Obama is actually just a hyped-up teleprompter reader. - Or a sad combination of both.
They will not be able to explain away his dreadful performance or conclude that Romney's masterful performance was just coincidental series of lucky breaks.

As the reality continues to sink in on the Mainstream Media that the president outright sucks at explaining the efficacy of his policies and the suck-ass results those policies have produced over the past four years: They will instinctively stop trying to prop up the president and his failed policies.
They are going to begin to smell the stink of a loser. And they are going to instinctively back away.

The reaction at MSNBC tonight was the most revealing. Some of them are actually outraged at president Obama. Chris Mathews is certain that Obama had many cakewalk slam-dunk arguments to make, and he is utterly befuddled as to why Obama failed to even try! And this makes my point. When the sycophants at MSNBC (who are nakedly in the tank for Obama) are this vocal about their dismay at repeatedly seeing their guy get his ass stomped: it is only a matter of time before they realize their guy and his policies are obvious losers. The likes of Mathews, Maddow, and Schultz will never fully abandon the president. But the more centrist-leftist journalists which tend to characterize the Mainstream Media will not want to be associated with carrying water for a loser and his failed policies.
And seeing that the president doesn't even know how to defend these policies, they'll realize that they don't either.

232 Mitt did indeed set a high bar for the rest of the campaign. And Zero has nowhere to go but up. But a lot of us, myself included, seem to have been waiting for Romney to make some unforgivable gaffe, or waiting for the 2008 Obama to suddenly show up. IMO, Mitt won this debate so decisively that all he needs to do is be merely competent in the last 2 debates to wrap this up. The Town Hall may be a bit problematic, but the foreign policy debate should be a wipeout for Mitt, if Barky even decides to show up. If he had this much trouble defending his domestic record, how the hell could he even pretend that his FP record has any positives?

Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at October 04, 2012 03:36 AM (yJYwC)

233 Joe Trippi predicted that Obama will do better in the next debate. Um, the next one's about foreign policy and if anything's worse than Obama's domestic policy, it's his foreign policy! Libya will loom large, his support of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood, his claims that he defeated Al-Qeada when they just burned down our consulate and assassinated four Americans, his enmity toward Israel, Poland, the UK, and the Dalai Lama, on and on and on. I can't wait til the next debate where the guy with "no foreign policy experience" is going to show more knowledge and more pro-America sentiment than the POTUS of the last four years. I think it'll be as epic as tonight.

You mean they didn't want another "You didn't build that!" ? I haven't thought O really cares since the summer because he seemed to just be coasting and complaining about the work, but he does love barfing things up. He loves destroying America; I'd think he'd want to win just keep that up.

237 I expected him to be at least his arrogant self; he wasn't even that. I expected him to lie more or at least lie with passion. I thought we'd get an "I won" out of him or.... *something*. His ego usually makes him care about what's said about him, but he didn't even care about that tonight. It was almost eery.

he would have been like this but half the time he had no idea what the hell Mitt was talking about. Barky just really doesn't understand ANY of this stuff. All he can do is repeat shit he's learned by rote (and some phonetically). he doesn't actually understand anything. He's really that stupid.

Barky launched into one of his rote scripts every chance he got but most of the time he just had no clue what the hell was going on, since it was more of an interaction between the two. I'm sure that if you were ever in class with Barky you'd see him act the same way everytime he had to take a math test and couldn't even figure out what 60% of the questions were even asking for.

As TOTUS above said, barky's nothing without a script. He really can't think. Not one little bit. And Barky has never demonstrated anything different. People just made shit up about him but it's always been apparent that he's a total imbecile. I keep saying it but no one says "profit and earnings ratios" purely by mistake. A person HAS to be incredibly stupid for sopmething so idiotic to even make it out of his mouth. Most 8th graders understand, naturally, that division is NEVER translated to "and". NEVER. Anyone who could make that mistake is a real idiot.

Barky is what he is - an Indonesian Imbecile. That's why this nation letting itself be taken apart by a mental midget such as him is triply offensive. It's one thing to fall to a superior intellect, but to be beaten by the intellectual equivalent of a slug ... a guy with no skills or talents, whatsoever ... absolutely pathetic. Historically embarrassing.

238 The Town Hall may be a bit problematic

Presenting in front of an interacting audience and fielding questions is something business executives do all the time. Romney will feel right at home in that format.

The "audience" will be laced with Dem shills as it has always been in the past, but Romney already knows that.

240 Aslan's Girl, unfortunately the next debate is a town-hall moderated by Candy Crowley so is something of a wild-card.

I would consider it Obama's most likely scenario to not suck in as he's not confrontational with Romney. You're talking to assholes in the audience and can feel their pain. The other downside is after tonight's epic ass-raping, don't be surprised to see more people tune in to see what they missed, so Obama has some rebound potential.

It all comes down to how filling that narcissistic fuck's ego is willing to admit defeat and actually train at the level.

The last debate is the FP one which is moderated by Bob Schiefer which is actually not bad for us. Unfortunately, FP will likely be the least watched and least cared about.

If he and his campaign team conclude that now he has to be aggressive against Romney in either of the two remaining debates, then tonight's ass stomping will end up looking like a game of patty-cake.

---
As a strategic mindset that's good, but it's not necessarily true. Aslan's Girl is wondering why he was so detached tonight and I worry it's because he can't affect the outcome from here. At this point I don't believe it's a matter of their polls saying the election is in the bag. Maybe he knows he's a lost cause either due to intel showing his chickens coming home to roost or a preview of economic numbers. Ace,

Serious Question:
How
will the Mainstream Media continue to defend the president's policies
now that it has been demonstrated in their faces that even the president
can't defend his own positions?

Answer:
They won't.

Something
went terribly wrong in the myopic world of the Mainstream Media
tonight. But it will take a few days for it settle into their collective
psyche.
You see, it's been understood since before he was elected
president that Barrack Obama is a genius politician and orator. Quick on
his feet! Nimble in his thinking! Always six or seven moves ahead in a
three dimensional game of chess while everyone else is playing checkers!
A once in a lifetime visionary who will lead us on the True Path to
healing the nation's wounds and setting it on a course of transcendental
flourishing.

Tonight all those myths were exposed as utter
sham. They were blown to bits right in front of everybody's eyes. But
his defacto-cheerleaders in the press haven't fully realized it yet.
Some of them may never be able to consciously admit to themselves what
happened. But on a subconscious/instinctive level, it will begin to sink
in. Their mental paradigms are shifting even as they sleep.
How could this have happened? How could a safer than milk square like Romney have obliterated the Master at his own game?
They
won't be able to convince themselves that Obama didn't have time to
adequately prepare for the debate. - What, he couldn't take time off
from his busy schedule of non-stop campaign fund raising?

Very
soon the press will begin to suspect the truth. Either the president's
policies have failed as disastrously as Romney claims, or president
Obama is actually just a hyped-up teleprompter reader. - Or a sad
combination of both.
They will not be able to explain away his
dreadful performance or conclude that Romney's masterful performance was
just coincidental series of lucky breaks.

As the reality
continues to sink in on the Mainstream Media that the president outright
sucks at explaining the efficacy of his policies and the suck-ass
results those policies have produced over the past four years: They will
instinctively stop trying to prop up the president and his failed
policies.
They are going to begin to smell the stink of a loser. And they are going to instinctively back away.

The
reaction at MSNBC tonight was the most revealing. Some of them are
actually outraged at president Obama. Chris Mathews is certain that
Obama had many cakewalk slam-dunk arguments to make, and he is utterly
befuddled as to why Obama failed to even try! And this makes my point.
When the sycophants at MSNBC (who are nakedly in the tank for Obama) are
this vocal about their dismay at repeatedly seeing their guy get his
ass stomped: it is only a matter of time before they realize their guy
and his policies are obvious losers. The likes of Mathews, Maddow, and
Schultz will never fully abandon the president. But the more
centrist-leftist journalists which tend to characterize the Mainstream
Media will not want to be associated with carrying water for a loser and
his failed policies.
And seeing that the president doesn't even know how to defend these policies, they'll realize that they don't either.

The other -- even more effective mind-fuck, which was 100% from the Romney campaign which it seems a lot of people missed -- was Ann Romney telling CNN in that interview that aired this AM (but was on website last night) was that the first thing Mitt does to prepare for a debate is when he walks out he to the podium writes the word "Dad" on his note paper to remind himself of his wonderful relationship with his father, that his dad is there with him at the debates and to answer everything in a way that will honor his dad make his dad proud. While I have no doubt that is a 100% true story, the reason to make it public is because that reminder that Mitt had a great father who love him -- more than anything else -- gets under the SCoaMF's skin -- the guy who is playing out his daddy issues on the public stage and making the rest of us suffer because of them. Pure genius.

Also, the new Obot meme I've seen floating around is that Obama did badly on purpose was a wake up call to snap everyone out of their "complacency."
Yeah -- good luck with that one.

275 As much as the moderators would love to throw it to Obama, I'm not quite sure that they'll be able to.

Remember how they tried lowering expectations? And Obama couldn't even clear that bar?

http://www.conservativecommune.com/2012/10/sometimes-expectations-cant-be-set-low-enough/

Who are the moderators/what is the format for the remaining debates?

And shall we start a pool about the "foreign policy" debate being canceled? Domestic is where Obama supposedly would be better. Yeah, that worked out. He's got even worse optics for foreign policy.

276 Another from DU forums:

"The President is a very cool chess player>whenever he seems weak, he is setting up a checkmate.

Need I remind y'all that the President likes to sit back and let people set their own traps for themselves?

Tonight Obama set up a nice big rat trap and then sat back on the sidelines and ate a sandwich. The rat, however, had a busy night. He put his own cheese in Obama's rat trap, nibbled on it, ran around on it, and lied ALL about it.

And Obama is still, basically, sitting on the sidelines eating his sandwich. Tomorrow when Romney's house of lies collapses the rat trap will snap shut.

Obama didn't lose the debate, he stepped out of the way while it careened downhill out of control.

And that is how you beat a sleazy used-car salesman...you just stand pack and let him lie. He beats himself.

I mean, seriously, do you think Obama is the type to take that crap for no reason? You seriously underestimate him if you do...just like Romney is about to do."

278 They will likely do a wait and see approach, based on two things. First, how the debate impacts the race itself. Right now, things look bad for Obama with the snap polling and focus groups of independents showing record levels for Romney across the board.

This undermines all their negative ads making Romney out to be the third anti-christ; People realize they've been lied to.

Secondly, the jobs numbers on friday. There is more downside risk to a bad number than upside to a good one. So, they may need a 'reset' event following this.

If there is movement due to either they will likely push Biden to go aggressive on Ryan and try to stem the tide. This is what Bush-'04 did when Kerry came on strong in debate 1, they had Cheney go aggressive and change the narrative. Obama's people like to view this election as a 2004 rerun, so look out for Biden's kamakazi run.

Reminds me of Kirk's line from "Wrath of Khan": "Khan. I'm laughing at the superior intellect."

294 I think this goes along the line of the concern raised in the post, to Bryan Preston's article. I fully suspect that, even though Obama is lazy and conceited enough to think he didn't really have to prepare, he did it on purpose. He only has to be "good" in the last of the three debates to drag his platoons of "Obama phone" idiots and other assorted hangers-on across the finish line. Even the vaunted "independents" and "swing voters" could be swayed, given modern low-info / low-intelligence ability to have, you know, longer-than three-day short term memories. He was pacing himself. No sense exerting yourself for the announced pop-quiz, when you only have to do "good" for the final.

295 Be careful. Be very, very careful. I think the crowing should stop. These guys (elitist tyrants) always have a plan. Everyone should stay on message about the failed last four years, whyfailure abounds for four years (Mitt is good at this),and the lack of investigative journalism into Obama's resume for the presidency. Nose to the grind stone.

297 The Democrats are so rabid at this point I expect the "October surprise" to come any day now.

298 Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.
