NBC/WSJ Poll: Obama Lead Down To Basically Nothing, 49-46

Praise the Saints I can finally talk about polls again.

Do you know how hard it is on Poor Me if I actually have to work instead of just putting up poll posts?

Obama edges Romney by three points among likely voters, 49 percent to 46 percent, which is within the survey’s margin of error. Obama’s lead was five points, 50 percent to 45 percent, in the NBC/WSJ poll released two weeks ago, following the political conventions.

It's margin of error.

Just To Point Something Out Here... Check Question 7 in the questionnaire. (You have to go to my link then click on their link; I'm having a problem copying the link to the PDF.) As far as I can tell, this is the only part of it that serves as a Likely Voter Screen. All it asks is for people to rate their interest in the election, from 1-10.

Now, Gallup's Likely Voter Screen (which isn't being used yet) is more involved. It asks if people voted last time and the time before that; if they know where their local polling place is; and then it asks about interest in the election and self-rated likelihood of voting.

Another Voter Screen question I've seen is this: "Did you plan on voting in the the last election, but found that something came up which prevented you from voting?" That question is worded like that, I believe, to provide the respondent with an excuse for not voting, to lessen the social pressure to just say "Yes I vote in each and every election just like a good civic-minded citizen." It's trying to get the truth by giving them an out.

All this one asks is self-rated interest in the election -- and people lie about things like this. Few wish to say "I'm not civic minded."

All these guys seem to do is to ask people if, in their own estimation, they are well-informed and dutiful citizens.

10 margin of error doesn't even mean what is implied.

it means that if certain assumptions built into the statistics are correct and if the poll were conducted numerous times -- the results of all those repetitions would fall in a range.

it does not mean that the poll might be "right" give or take a certain amount. being right or wrong has nothing to do with margin of error in a case such as political polls.

81 If Romney wins the popular vote he will win in almost any scenario the electoral vote. That is the dirty little secret.

Obama won CA, NY minus Texas by over 4.5 million votes in 2008. Bush won AR, LA, GA, SC, AL, MS,KY and TN by 2.5 million in 2004. DE, MA, NJ, CT, RI, ME, VT, IL, OR, WA, MN, MD, PA, MI, NM and HA account for millions more votes than AZ, IN, SD , ND, MT, AK, WY, ID, WV, OK and KS. .

Obama should win CA, NY minus TX by over 3 million votes. Romney may win the south by the same margin as Bush. When you add the remaining blue states and red states, Romney would have to make up approx 2.5 million votes in the swing states, FL, OH, VA, IA, WI, CO, NH and NV to roughly break even. Hard to see dispersing those votes over 8 states and still lose the electoral college.

197 I had a disappointing lunch with five other people today. I asked if anyone was following the events in Libya. Not a one. I told them the media was suppressing the story, actually trying to hide the truth, and got pretty bored stares in response. The only redeeming point to this is that we're in red country and I am positive all (except perhaps one older woman whose political persuasion I don't know) will vote RR.

212 O/T but I figured you morons would find a faint tinge of hope from this...my son-in-law got home from Afghanistan this afternoon, and he and my daughter went to the elementary school to surprise my grandson. Daughter had called the school ahead of time to see if it was OK - and the principle, thinking she was doing a good thing, contacted the local ABC affiliate to have them record the event for posterity and the six o'clock news. SIL creeps into the classroom (third grade, btw), cameraman and reporter in tow. Grandson jumps up, says "hi, dad", gives him a hug, and - looking straight into the camera - says "I'm not gonna vote for Obama, Dad..."
