Romney, Ryan: Obama Doesn't Want The Public To Know What Happened In Libya

Getting sharper.

As CBS' political director said: You can't expect the media to point out Obama's failures on their own. You have to push it.

"I think they want to do their very best to keep the people of America from understanding exactly what happened. We expect candor, we expect transparency, particularly, as it relates to terrorism," Romney said.

"Why is he (Obama) not on the same page with his own administration officials who are saying that this is a terrorist attack? We'll leave it up to you to decide whether it's a coverup or not," Ryan said.

Video at the link.

Now: Something that's been bothering me.

I hear chatter from Team Romney that they no longer think that just hitting Obama on the economy will work.

I suppose that's true, in a trivial way. No one thing and one thing only will work.

But what I'm becoming a little unnerved by is the lack of a push on the economy anymore.

One highpoint of this campaign, for me, was Romney's whiteboard. I thought it signified that he'd be making the case against Obama on the economy sharply, cogently.

Instead, lately... I almost feel like they're conceding "We'll never convince people on this."

Maybe the economy alone can't win this thing, but without the economy as a pressing, top issue we are surely doomed.

I bring this up because while I approve of the toughness on Libya, I definitely do not want some "reboot" where they begin trying to emphasize issues other than the economy.

If you haven't won on the economy yet: You double down. You become more insistent. You rebut everything Clinton claimed. You begin running those Scare the Shit Out of the Public ads you once ran in the primaries.

The predicate for any decision to dump Obama is that the economy is bad and he deserves blame for that. The conclusion sought-- vote for Romney -- can only exist once that predicate is established.

If, as the polls indicate, people are starting to think the economy's okay, then that needs addressing. Urgently.

Maybe the election will not be won on the economy alone, but surely it will not be won on anything else.

MACIVER: MILITARY VOTERS IN WISCONSIN TOLD TO SUBMIT BALLOTS A WEEK AFTER DEADLINE

"The Federal Voting Assistance Program website published an incorrect deadline for the return of returning military ballots in Wisconsin. Had this error not been corrected, thousands of Wisconsin servicemen and women could have been disenfranchised in this key swing state this November.

The FVAB website incorrectly stated ballots must be returned by November 16. The actual deadline is 4 p.m. November 9. Any military ballots received in that intervening week would not have been counted by local and state election officials."

Now, I suppose that is jiu jitsu on the outsourcing thing, but one, it is defensive that way, and two, he's just not going to win the Obama is a bigger outsourcer because Obama is a community organizer not a venture capitalist.

20 The first debate is October 3 and it's on "domestic policy" (the economy). The pivot happens there.

Right now, Obama's very vulnerable on an issue and on the fact that an ambassador has been raped and murdered and raped. And Obama is being feckless about it. He used "bump in the road".

More importantly, he's throwing free speech under the bus and despite the columns of some U. Chicago law professors, that doesn't make the self-righteous Left happy.

So you hammer him for a couple of days while he limps on that leg and pivot back to the economy when the time is right.

I really wouldn't worry about this being a long-term problem. At some time, RR have to start setting the agenda.

He's hitting been America on so many fronts we're all overwhelmed, dazed, reeling. Romney/Ryan should be hitting in the same way. Every day Romney should go down the list of outrages in the news. Just go through each one and quote Obama or his people and comment why this or that was wrong and how he would be doing it differently. Obama is an embarrassment of embarrassing riches. And we're acting like we have to carefully pick and choose how we critique him? Blitzkrieg him!

By the time Romney is done with Obama he will have him tied in knots. I get a chuckle from those here that seem to think Romney isn't doing enough.
I'm somewhat surprised by this talking point that BO isn't going to talk to other world leaders while they convene at the UN. BO shows up, reads his teleprompter and departs, leaving the meetings to Hillary. Why hasn't it occurred that it's possible that other world leaders don't want to talk to BO?

Same thing here in MA, a campaign strategy also employed by Lieawatha Warren.

All these earnest, caring wimminz who are afraid that eeeeeevil Rmoney will starve their babies and destroy Hard-Working Families. Hard to watch without weeping, y'know.

I agree that the economy is important, Ace, but I think some push-back on Choom Boy's taking away our freedoms, championing the Muzzies and lying like a friggin' rug had better be in the mix, too.

There are a lot of dimwits out there who, despite all evidence, will go for Osama Obama because NBC, CBS and ABC such his Male Unit each and every day. The sheer pressure of repetition counts for something.

But what the hell do I know? I still want to see the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable traitor impeached and jailed. I know that's hardly "fairness," Poppin' Fresh style, but it is fairness American style, and if we don't defend it, we will lose it. We already are on the way to that.

Posted by: MrScribbler at September 25, 2012 07:35 PM (ZgX/g)

59 My biggest fear was that Romney would just try to run out the clock, thinking he could win with just "the economy sucks". Years ago, that would have worked, but not anymore.

Romney has got to realize that he's not going to be a beloved figure. He needs to understand he's Richard Nixon. Nixon won 49 states.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've yet to see a presidential candidate lose because they played too rough. Everyone loves to talk about how "despicable" Willie Horton ads were, but they destroyed Dukakis. Do you think Bush Sr regrets running those ads?

I think Romney "gets it" and I see a sharper campaign from here on out. I think the reason it hasn't appeared is because the internal polls are probably much closer than the media is portraying.

Posted by: McAdams at September 25, 2012 07:36 PM (0kf1G)

60 The stealth message from the Obama camp:

"If it's bad now, Romney will make it worse, and he'll take all your benefits away".

Romney's job is to explain why we don't have to put up with the current slide to disaster, and, instead follow his plan for the Great American Recovery.

So, what's Mitt's plan? The only noise I heard after the convention was about a 82-yo man's ad lib conversation with an empty chair.

Posted by: mrp at September 25, 2012 07:36 PM (HjPtV)

61 We're going to lose. That so much of the country is convinced the economy is doing better and that Obama would do a better job than Romney from here on out tells me it's over. The gleeful and smarmy comments on Washington Post articles also tells me the leftists know it too and they are overjoyed.

All we can hope for now is to watch Obamacare reach its full execution and maybe when it completely destroys our healthcare and economy and we become a third world country, MAYBE then then the majority of the country will wake up. But it will probably be too late.

In practice if not in theory.

That's the thing about calling the O'beanbag a socialist; he's actually hurting the poor. Not a damned thing that he's done helps the lower half.

He's a corporatist that uses shaded collectivist speech in order to accumulate power and selectively reward allies and punish opponents. Corporatist in the original sense, not the sloppy Leftist bastardization.

106 First of all, you just can't go by what is being reported in the MFM. He is talking about the economy, jobs, the free market.....but what the left leaning media is mostly reporting is his so called gaffes, troubles, 'terrible week', etc.

So it is our job to get the true message out about the existing and coming damage to our economy under TFG's policies. Take regulations, for example. They cost our economy about $1.5 trillion a year to comply with -- a number larger than our annual deficit.

Or take our current corporate tax rate of 35% -- the third highest in the world. It's one of the reasons our world competitive ranking has slid from 2nd in 2000 to 18th this year.

Now, these things are being reported on by people like us but not in the MFM. But the confidence in their product is falling rapidly.

116 >>But what I'm becoming a little unnerved by is the lack of a push on the economy anymore.

Kudlow addressed this very thing today. Excerpt but read the whole thing:

"One of the reasons Mitt Romney and the GOP failed to get a convention bounce was their inability to talk tax cuts, economic growth, and jobs...

[snip]

In fact, Romney and Ryan didn’t talk tax cuts leading up to the convention, and they didn’t in the weeks that followed. This has hurt them in the polls. They haven’t connected the dots between Obama’s anemic economy and the Romney-Ryan solution to improve it.

But, all of a sudden, there may have been an “aha” moment. In a 60 Minutes interview this past Sunday, Romney did mention tax cuts, and take-home pay, too...

[snip]

And Mitt Romney may be coming around to this view. Maybe it’s part of his strategy to “beef up” his message. On the side of his campaign bus it says “take-home pay and jobs.” Right on. And if Romney actually uses this language, he can put more meat on the bones by being more specific.

Basically, his 20 percent tax-reduction plan takes the top rate down from 35 to 28 percent. These are the big investors who help fund new businesses and job creation. And yes, as liberals always point out, their take-home pay will go up the most, by roughly $70,000 yearly.

But politically, Romney can speak directly to the middle class and show them how much their take-home pay will go up, too..."

A little while ago Romney released a "jobs calculator" to figure out how many jobs would be added under his plan in your state. That's fine, but in my opinion misses the point. First, because "jobs" only matter if you don't have one. Second, because there are so many factors that go into jobs growth that no one is allowed to take credit. (See Perry, Rick)

What people see and feel and know is their family budget. Mitt can/should show how our budgets are being eaten up by -- and will continue to be eaten up by -- Democrat policies. Then show us how we'll be able to keep more of our money if the GOP is in charge.

138 There might be some mess up because of this:

Last year, the State of Wisconsin changed its election laws to comply with the new federal Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act and ensure that these voters have enough time to get their ballots back home to be counted. Federal law requires a minimum of 45 days, and State law now requires 47 days. However, because of delays in sending ballots by a few local election officials, the U.S. Department of Justice sought a federal consent decree for compliance that affects all of Wisconsin’s 1,923 local election officials, and which will be effective through the Fall 2012 elections.

141 Ace, it's OK to shift focus. Not abandon. Shift.

Look, Team Romney knows there's a point of diminishing returns on every issue. Some people are most impacted by one issue while others are more impacted by another. Given the ignorance and flippancy by a segment of America's voting population, you have to appeal to them in several ways since, well, they won't be swayed by hammering the exact same point over and over. They're stubborn to reason or policy they don't think, rightly or wrongly, impacts them.

So, you stick to a limited potpourri of themes so as not to diffuse the "big" issues while still trying to appeal to them at multiple levels. To address everything would be to diminish everything. To address just one theme would be to putting all your eggs in one basket. That's simply too risky. Ultimately you keep reminding voters of the dismal economic policy of TFG but introduce a handful of other big issues in hopes of hitting elsewhere those who aren't swayed by recession/depression. Romney has to approach it this way even though, to us, it is still "The Economy, Stupid" and just that should be enough.

144 The "Coverup" theme applies to the Economy, too.

There are a lot of things that the O-administration is 'covering up'...

-- One Third of the Workforce is out of work....but they keep the 'unemployment numbers' at around 8%?

-- They give guns to Mexican drug lords....and then say "Oops", but Barky invokes Executive Priviledge to cover it up?

-- They're still 'covering up' what is in ObamaCare....and who they've given Waivers to.

-- Barky's college records are still 'sealed'....what is he covering up there?

This whole Barky presidency started with a coverup, and it's been one damn coverup after another, while he's been in.

145 Gawd-

JSOnline has this--do they even check!

Madison - A federal voting website Tuesday corrected an erroneous deadline for military and overseas voters to return their ballots.

The Federal Voting Assistance Program's website said for a time that overseas voters had to have their ballot postmarked by election day and returned to clerks by Nov. 16 - a week too late to hit the correct Nov. 9 deadline for having it returned. That could have prevented some of their ballots from being counted.

The good news is that state elections officials had emailed the correct information to all military and overseas voters in the state system last week, said Reid Magney, spokesman for the state Government Accountability Board.

"They had the wrong date for a bit, and we contacted them today," Magney said Tuesday, stressing that state officials had consistently provided the correct information. "We don't see this as being a big problem."

146 This is the metric I'm working from:

If Romney gets caught eating an Asian baby he's still a lock. It may hurt him a little bit in CA if the baby is Japanese but there's no way he wins there anyway.

If it's a white baby he's caught eating it will only be a problem if it isn't Mormon. If it is we can just say, "Oh, it's a Mormon thing. Move along." The contingency here is to just claim it's a Mormon baby regardless and hope it blows over.

If it's a Hispanic baby we're gonna have to try and say it's actually an Asian baby. You can't really tell an Asian baby from a Hispanic baby anyway, can you?

Now, if it's a black baby he's found eating there's going to be some uncomfortable racial overtones that will cause some push back and possibly makes it possible for Romney to lose. But that really would depend on turnout.

According to Rasmussen today, in the nationwide poll, Romney is only one percentage point behind, and if you count leaners, he's tied:

http://tinyurl.com/5tnd2b

He may be up way more than that in Michigan, but Michigan lost population in the 2010 census (the only state to do so), so that it's down to 16 electoral votes from 17. Could be worse.

229 "How the fucking fuck is Romney not fucking ahead by 10 points at least."

For one thing, because Romney is just like John McCain in that he can't bear the thought that he might be spoken of as some sort of uncouth ruffian if he ever were to take off the gloves against Obama. Heavens!

Just like McCain, Romney would rather be a gentleman loser than win and be called anything other than a gentleman.

Personally, I adhere to the "winners win and then they go home and fuck the prom queen" model, and I don't much care what the losers have to say about it afterward. Politics ain't beanbag. Do what it takes.

Here's something to reflect on. Barky has NEVER ONCE in his entire political career faced an opponent who was willing to go full bore Lee Atwater on his ass, dredging up every last ugly secret and dropping it with a wet thud in the middle of the banquet linen.

Because if winning ugly is what it takes against the guy, nevertheless, everyone who has run against Barky has recoiled at the thought of such dreadful ugliness. End result? You know that as well as I do.

Meanwhile, Barky's campaign operatives gear up to issue a string of full power nutsack kicks with steel-toed boots. Including simply making shit up if they have to. Outright blatant barefaced lies.

Hell, that's what the Obama crew did in 2008. They ran an absolutely ruthless back-office character assassination op. They planted stories calling McCain a traitor and a war criminal. They accused him of personally starting the fire on _Forrestal_ in 1967 that killed hundreds of sailors. Did anyone call them on that shit afterward? No. Not a peep. Barky won, and then went home to fuck the prom queen. Or to be fucked by Reggie Love, but who's counting.

247 I posted a link on another thread showing some interesting info regarding how Catholics in swing states view this election. If you examine what was found, in some states who are not suffering as hard economically because of Republican governors, the voters are looking at foreign policy, and social issues. They more than anything look at the lack of freedoms we have today.

Perhaps the Romney campaign is seeing voters are not just one dimensional. I do not look at the dangers America faces as being solved strictly by having a stronger dollar. It is very important to save the country economically, but the country is split, and to be honest, quite at odds with itself over how we can come together as a country. There is a problem economically which I believe will put us in past Great Depression categories. Many of us would say we could survive that as a nation, but not if faced with our current culture. In other words, many voters find us to be bankrupt in more ways than just where the Fed has taken us.

I have a degree in 18th century Lit., and it has taken me 3 years to figure some of the economic shit storm over the cliff stuff out. I took the time to figure out why Art Laffer was alarmed, and this fellow on FBN, Peter Schiff was freaking out. I understand why Mitt can claim he pays more in taxes than someone making $30K-$50K, but I am not sure my sister could, and she hates Obama. She has an excuse, her kids are still at home. But imagine if you are on the fence, and do not get the economics of doom if we have another 4 years of Dear Leader?

I am with those wondering where the Mitt With Knives Guy is when it comes to the ads? This has been a long complaint from Conservatives because we either eat our own, or wage war so well against each other, but never show up when the real enemy show up. I do not care one way or the other what the Romney campaign decides, ABO, but for the love of all things holy, get it on for those fence sitters who do not have a clue!

249 The good thing about an economic attack is you need very little media cooperation because you can talk to the people who are experiencing it.

Foreign policy can complement Romney's thrust *a bit*, but Americans have to rely on media for their foreign policy news. And we all know what that means.

251 Look at Iraq and Afghanistan when Bush was in versus now.

The main reason Americans listed the War on Terror as a big issue in 2004 and 2008 is the media covered it. Now, when we're losing Americans at four times the clip (I think that's right) as were before in Afghanistan, it barely registers.

Because the media has shut it down.

Take em on at a debate, run nasty gutter ads, whatever it took. So we all know he CAN fight. But he has yet to touch O. On the other hand it probably isn't time, he only hit hard in the primary when the chips were down. We don't have dozens of debates in the general though so after this first debate we will know if we are screwed by another damned dirty RINO or not. So lets all just hang in there until then before we panic.

265 I've said all along that polls are crap, that they coincidentally match real events, but are generally worthless. Take the "margin of error." That works great in raw number statistics, but you can't estimate that with people because there are too many variables, too many influences. You can't predict peoples' behavior to within 2-3 percentage points, ever.

This year finally people are going to see how this works, we've seen it for years with the "exit polls" which are just utter crap. Polling is an ugly, stupid business I wish would just die a horrid death.

268 Another factor is the nailing Jello to the wall deal. POTUS is like Jello, just listen to that crapstastic speech at the UN. He took both sides, rolled it up, and in the end, if you are average American Joe, you have no idea which side of the fence POTUS is on. If Average Joe is even paying attention to what Chicago Jesus said to the UN.

This guy covers both sides of the coin, and the challenge is to get the voters to ignore Chicago Jesus blathering, and look at the facts. I will never understand the critical thinking deficit in this country. No one wants to match his words with his actions.

With the negatives being said, there is absolutely no evidence this is a D+8 election. None. As many here have pointed out. There is no evidence Obama is coming to the finish line with the same number of zombies he brought to the show in November of 2008. None. These polls can say what they want, but they are under orders to skew them, and they are applying 2008 as if 2010 did not happen. Good luck with that. The grassroots have not suddenly flipped out, given up, and stopped trying to get rid of bad actors in Congress, and their ultimate goal of unelecting Obama. We have not gotten weaker since 2010. Have not.

Sununu is on with Hannity. That is what the Romney campaign needs. UNLEASH THE DAWGS!!!!!!!

As to what happened in 2008, it was not as clean an outcome as Evil Overlord's peeps want to make it out. No way in some states voter fraud was not a factor. Not saying McCain won, but the outcome was not squeaky clean either.

Ace,

I will be surprised and angry if Romney ends up paying mere lip-service on the broad issue of America's potent economic woes. I find it hard to believe that he would conclude that the economy as an issue is tapped out or basically baked into the cake as far as persuadable voters are concerned.

There is an important tactic that tends to eventually generate strategic windfalls in argumentation - when the facts are on your side. You stop arguing for what is obvious. You don't try to convince people of facts that are plain to see. Instead, you start asserting conclusions (which are based on those obvious facts) as obvious facts in and of themselves.

Romney should not be arguing passionately in an effort to convince anyone that Obama's policies have wounded the economy. He should bluntly and somewhat casually assert this conclusion as fact and then just as casually provide a few indisputable examples.

But here is the clincher: Romney then has to go right at the Obama's character and attack his integrity. He should say things like, "This president is hoping that voters won't notice that his economic policies have failed. He's become good at pretending as though the economy isn't that bad and even good at pretending that his policies have made things better. I am here to make sure that the president does not succeed at fooling others into believing he's done a good job. If the president really cared more about the economy than just hanging on to power, he would admit the obvious: his policies have done tremendous damage to the American economy."

Some will say that this is a bad strategy because it openly challenges the president's sincerity which can never be proven one way or the other.
But that misses the point.

If Obama and his supporters (including the mainstream media) find themselves crying foul over Romney accusing the president of not caring, it forces them to talk in specifics about what Romney claims Obama does not care about. THEY FIND THEMSELVES PLAYING EMOTIONAL DEFENSE ON THE ECONOMY.
Moreover, while they're concentrated on being indignant about Romney's questioning the president's sincerity, they'll often not sufficiently ( and sometimes even at all) address the casually asserted conclusion that Obama's policies have been ruinous.
That is, those casually asserted conclusions begin to take paradigmatic shape within the conversation.
When they do figure out that they need to address these conclusions, they feel themselves playing catchup which creates the tendency to sound a bit desperate in issuing blanket denials on topics they don't really want to be discussing in the first place. It creates the frantic tendency to try too hard at insisting that it's just not true - like they're hoping no one will notice that is true.

287 Remember what he said about the 47%?

So much of what saps and undermines our economy when a Marxist is in the White House is the misuse of government power to extract wealth from those who create it and provide it to those who do not.

People who want to work for a living want a strong economy where their paycheck is their own and it is not misappropriated by an appparatchik to be dispensed to his vassals amongst the underclass in exchange for their votes.

Parasites don't care about a strong economy, they just want access to other people's money. So political arguments where someone talks about people keeping more of their own paycheck don't resonate with them in the least. On the contrary, they are threatened by such arguments.

Enough of these people exist now that candidates for public office have to tread lightly with them.

This is why our country is doomed.

289 "Parasites don't care about a strong economy," Glad you've admitted that you all don't care about a strong economy.

It was obvious. I mean, you all celebrated the wrecking of the economy under Bush.

290 I suspect the economy isn't working because of the common thought that Obama is growing the economy. I know....

I was out to dinner with two friends of mine who happen to be gay. NOBODY knows I'm a republican because the environment is so hostile and it would be terrible for my career if it got back to work. My fiance, who is liberal, let the cat out of the bag and my friend said, "WHAT?! Don't you want me to have any rights?" I went on to explain that of course I want her to have rights, the reason I am voting for Romney is for the health of the country. At that point she said, "I don't think people realize how much the economy has grown under Obama." And she's not alone.

If half the country believes the economy has grown because the media is telling them that, then hammering Obama on the economy won't work.
