Amateur Webzine Slate: The Hostile Reaction of Backwards Cultures To Free Expression Proves We Overvalue Free Expression

Interesting.

I would have thought the opposite. I would, for example, look at the rather meager innovations and breakthroughs produced in the Muslim world, compare them to our own, and think that perhaps Liberty of Mind produces some good effects.

But no, says the amateur webzine Slate.

The World Doesn’t Love the First Amendment

The vile anti-Muslim video shows that the U.S. overvalues free speech.

[A]mericans need to learn that the rest of the world—and not just Muslims—see no sense in the First Amendment. Even other Western nations take a more circumspect position on freedom of expression than we do, realizing that often free speech must yield to other values and the need for order. Our own history suggests that they might have a point.

...

The First Amendment earned its sacred status only in the 1960s, and then only among liberals and the left, who cheered when the courts ruled that government could not suppress the speech of dissenters, critics, scandalous artistic types, and even pornographers...

He notes liberals cheerleaded the First Amendment then. But even as conservatives embraced it...

Meanwhile, some liberals began to have second thoughts. They supported enactment of hate-crime laws that raised criminal penalties for people who commit crimes against minorities because of racist or other invidious motives. They agreed that hate speech directed at women in the workplace could be the basis of sexual harassment claims against employers as well. However, the old First Amendment victories in the Supreme Court continued to play an important role in progressive mythology. For the left, the amendment today is like a dear old uncle who enacted heroic deeds in his youth but on occasion says embarrassing things about taboo subjects in his decline.

This proves that liberals are hypocritical on sacred rights and will abandon them in a moment to push the rest of the progressive agenda. So? We should reward them for their betrayal of liberty?

Apparently so. Actually, this article is a jumble of nothing -- it's hard to extract meaning from it-- but the writer wants us to know the First Amendment is just a compromise like any other, and can and should be changed as current mores the progressive agenda and Obama's reelection require.

While the headline is forward leaning-- link-bait, I guess -- he then seems to lose the courage to state we must scrap the First Amendment.

He passive-aggressively hints at that, though.

I think he's a confused individual defending the indefensible in an effort to draw attention to himself.

If anything is clear (and a brief history of the world from 1776 until today will back this up), it's that the world has never liked us much to begin with. Hell, the ink wasn't dry on our Declaration of Independence until the rest of the world was saying all kinds of nasty things about us.

102 In the '30s there were Jews in Germany (admittedly a small number) who welcomed the rise of the Nazis. They liked that it would solve the problem of all those dirty non-German Jews coming in from the East and disrupting the nice, orderly German culture. 122 What strikes me as ironic and amateurish about the current administration's "policy" on the Middle East is the notion that democracy will just pop up de novo out of a vacuum. America had over two centuries of small town democracy that was tested and tweaked in the crucible of a colonial wilderness before the American Revolution. Bits and pieces of those small colonial towns were incorporated into the Constitution at the convention. Even with that it was a close thing at getting it ratified to be the law of the land. That Constitution has stood for over two more centuries.

The Middle East on the other hand has centuries of tribalism, strong arm dictatorships and vile primitive living conditions. They have none of the institutional infrastructure of democracy and no experience historically. The First Amendment is the bedrock of a democracy. If there is to be any possibility of a democratic governance in the Muslim world, they will have to have Freedom of Speech. Yet our State Dept. and administration grant them the validity to ignore that concept. And they ignore at our peril. There is no hope for democracy in that environment, and risk to our own by throwing it away. This is the hill to "die on".

166 1. Holy Wars...The Punishment Due

Brother will kill brother
Spilling blood across the land
Killing for religion
Something I don't understand

Fools like me, who cross the sea
And come to foreign lands
Ask the sheep, for their beliefs
Do you kill on God's command?

A country that's divided
Surely will not stand
My past erased, no more disgrace
No foolish naive stand

The end is near, it's crystal clear
Part of the master plan
Don't look now to Israel
It might be in your homelands

Holy wars

Upon my podium, as the
Know it all scholar
Down in my seat of judgement
Gavel's bang, uphold the law
Up on my soapbox, a leader
Out to change the world
Down in my pulpit as the holier
Than-thou-could-be-messenger of God

Wage the war on organized crime
Sneak attacks, repel down the rocks
Behind the lines
Some people risk to employ me
Some people live to destroy me
Either way they die.

They killed my wife, and my baby
With hopes to enslave me
First mistake...last mistake!
Paid by the alliance, to slay all the giants
Next mistake...no more mistakes!

Fill the cracks in, with judicial granite
Because I don't say it, don't mean I ain't
thinking it
Next thing you know, they'll take my thoughts away
I know what I said, now I must scream of the overdose
And the lack of mercy killings.

The thing I don't understand is why leftists don't realize that all that power they want to accumulate in the central government ... might be used against them.

Do they want President Pat Buchanan deciding what is acceptable speech and what isn't? How about President Palin (who is not whacked like Buchanan, but who is for some reason anathema to leftists)?

For my part, I don't want anyone in the central government making that determination. Apart from shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater, freedom of speech means ... freedom of speech. Period.

(Note to any errant leftists reading this: freedom of speech does not mean freedom from any and all consequences. Your employer can still fire you for mouthing off,and people can choose not to do business with you. Freedom of speech means that the government cannot punish you.)

After 9/11 America suffered from a type of PTSD and coped by singling out a brown enemy to take its anger and fear out on. Muslims don't hate us because of our liberties. They do not hate woman or homosexuals. They just want a little respect for their Prophet.

194 US Constitution and Supreme Court rulings regarding Freedom of Speech

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blasphemy_law_in_the_United_States_of_America

The US Supreme Court in Joseph Burstyn, Inc v. Wilson, 343 U.S. 495 (1952) held that the New York State blasphemy law was an unconstitutional prior restraint on freedom of speech. The court stated that "It is not the business of government in our nation to suppress real or imagined attacks upon a particular religious doctrine, whether they appear in publications, speeches or motion pictures."

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) was signed and ratified by the U.S. government decades ago. It passed the UN in 1966 and came into force in 1974. The U.S. Senate ratified the treaty in 1992 when George H.W. Bush was president.

Interesting history of the treaty per Wikipedia:

The United States has made reservations that none of the articles should restrict the right of free speech and association

See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Covenant_on_Civil_and_Political_Rights#United_States

My favorite quote, "Most of the American people would perceive that as Islam doing to the Bill of Rights what it did to lower Manhattan on 9/11/01."

Islam is a totalitarian form of government, first....and a religion, second.

It also has 'Lying' as one of it's basic tenets....called 'al taqyiia'.
Which is basically, "any falsehood told, that furthers the cause of Islam, is not a sin".

So how can you believe anything that a muslim says?

And....ancient ruins....ancient architecture, is a pretty good indicator of mathematical knowledge.
The ancient Greeks were applying complex algebraic equations...to stone...a long, long time ago.

248 Pat Buchannan was one of the first conservatives to speak out...loudly...against illegal immigration.

I think he and Reagan got crossways over this subject...after Reagan gave Amnesty to millions of them.
Reaganalso called for 'beefing up our border enforcement'.
Something that we still haven't done.

249 Yep,

What a model for civilization. I can say anything I want until some one takes offense and riots and kills people. There will be no unexpected consequences from this proposition.
This will end well.

That probably it because a primary challenge to Poppy Bush would've been right in Pat's wheelhouse. Nobody was particularly happy with GHWB, for very good reason, so Pat had to do his part to pave the way for the first term of Clenis the Bent.

Poppy Bush was just a horrible horrible President in a lot of way; particularly how he fucked over everybody in Eastern Europe by being a doofus puss after Reagan gave them the green light and they had the bit in their mouths. He was the poison pill/shit sammich that Top Men serve up to us to periodically let us know who's in charge. But Pat always takes a few good ideas to ridiculous extremes and ends up stepping on his dick. I'm too lazy to look it up but has he ever served an elective office?

259 Freedom of Speech, let 'em take it from me
Next they'll take it from you, then what you gonna do?
Let 'em censor books, let 'em censor art
PMRC, this is where the witch hunt starts
You'll censor what we see, we read, we hear, we learn
The books will burn
You better think it out
We should be able to say anything, our lungs were meant to shout
Say what we feel, yell out what's real
Even though it may not bring mass appeal
Your opinion is yours, my opinion is mine
If you don't like what I'm sayin'? Fine
But don't close it, always keep an open mind
A man who fails to listen is blind
We only got one right left in the world today
Let me have it or throw The Constitution away

Um... they liked what the Romans contributed more. Most of them were quite a bit sour on demokratia, they correctly saw it as mob rule.

And now that the left is in charge of the culture, having pointed out flaws of the old order, naturally they want to end free speech. Because they are perfect in every way--there's nothing for any rational person to criticize....in the slightest...just obey...

Johnnycake (also jonnycake, johnny cake, journey cake, shawnee cake and johnny bread) is a cornmeal flatbread that was an early American staple food and is prepared on the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to Jamaica.

What a total, irredeemable crock of utter, absolute, anti-historical bullshit -

Whoever wrote that was quite clearly absent the day they passed out the brain-power- that doesn't even come up to the level of "wrong"; it simply has no sentient content whatsoever.

Further proof (as if any was required) of the apparently-limitless empty space that is the Slate "writer"'s skull:

"...the U.S. overvalues free speech."

It is an obvious impossibility - obvious, that is, if you have even a single properly-functioning brain cell - to "overvalue free speech."

Slate, while sometimes moderately informative - even mildly amusing, perhaps, now and then - is overall pretty useless anyway. Only reason why it continues to exist at all is because we "value free speech"...

277 I watched the trailer for the "vile anti-Muslim video" and I can't understand what is so "vile" about it. The most horrible thing about it is the acting and production quality, but mostly they're just pointing out things actually written in the Koran and dismissing Mohammed as little more than a self-aggrandizing warmonger trying to justify his own sins, something done by almost every tyrant throughout history. Maybe the style is a little crude, but I didn't see anything specifically untrue. Me thinks Muslims are a tad too sensitive to what they probably realize is little more than a particularly brutal insecure Cult of Personality parading as divine providence.
