So, we have this elderly, confused old lady. At least we thought she was trying to do something nice... she's just stupid. But nice. Incompetent, stupid, and barking-dog crazy, but well-meaning. But no. She's not that nice. She sees the glitter of gold and she wants some of it.But popularity for the modified masterpiece grew with even budget airline Ryanair offering cheap deals to nearby Zaragoza airport encouraging "pilgrims" to visit the work that was quickly dubbed "Ecce Mono" – Behold the Monkey. An internet petition to keep the repair job garnered widespread support and seizing an opportunity to swell its coffers, the church began levying a 4 euro (£3) entrance fee on visitors, earning 2,000 euros in the first four days. Lawyers acting for Mrs Gimenez now insist she should be entitled to a cut of the profits, which she wants to go towards a charity of her choice. "She just wants the church to conform to the law," lawyer Enrique Trebolle said. "If this means economic compensation she wants it to be for charitable purposes".I try to be a realist about people. Meaning, I accept they are deeply, deeply flawed. That way, you can be a bit optimistic when they do nice things. To elevate the human specimen is to court disappointment and bitterness. That's the way you become a misanthropic crank, by thinking people ought to be angels, and then being so savagely disappointed you instead brand them devils. Exactly. She may be within her rights from a copyright perspective. Fact is people are making money off an image she created. I don't think it makes her corrupt just because she wants a cut from the money made off her ridicule. Especially if it goes to charity. I think the original assessment that she's a doddering old woman, but a well-meaning one, still stands.

It's not popular. About 1,000,000,000 saw the damned defaced painting on the internet, and the church got 500 visitors in the first four days. My guess is that about five people each day show up to see her handiwork.
With that much publicity, you could get 20,000 people to visit a particularly well curled turd in your toilet.
But....as someone suggested, they should have her arrested for defacing the church's property.

it later occurred to me that we don't know the inside story here, and the only quote we have is a *lawyer's* quote. note that the would-be picasso was earlier threatened with legal action by both the church AND by the family of the original painter of the work. naturally, she probably either "lawyered up" or at least began making some legal inquiries to investigate her options should any cases be formally drawn up against her.
it's POSSIBLE -- not that i'm any less far down the road of cynical misanthropy myself -- that what we're seeing here is greedy lawyers' ideas, and nothing more. it's possible that the lawyer talked her into letting him "look into the law" regarding "possible economic compensation"; the way the lawyer's statement is phrased is a little suspect, after all!
POSSIBLE. it's just as likely that she's a self-absorbed, money-grubbing old crone who actually thinks she is entitled to a "piece of the pie", so to speak, for ruining a revered work of art. but at least there's an OUT for those who want dearly to preserve belief in the righteousness of the human condition. :3

You may very well be right that the money will not end up at a charity but, at the moment, that is what she's saying. I believe a Christian church should be open to whoever wants to enter it, no fee required.
Was the church charging people before this woman did what she did, when the piece was intact? If not, then the only thing that has changed is the fact that this woman did something. Therefore, it is she that is bringing in the money. Therefore she should receive a portion of it.

Corrupt implies that she will be somehow personally benefiting from the money coming in. By that I mean a direct fiscal benefit, not a more remote yay I did good for charity fuzzy feeling benefit.
Greedy implies that she wants more of something for herself. Again, the public statement is that she wants the money to go to a charity of her choice. Unless she (or more likely her family) are running the charity, that is not a direct benefit to her.
Look, everyone else may be right about what will happen in the end but at the moment calling an old woman corrupt and greedy because she says she want part of the money that others are making off based on something she did to go to a charity is a bit much. That's all I'm saying.

I agree with you for religious stuff. No one should have to pay to worship. But these people aren't coming to mass as parishioners or whatever, they are coming to gawk at a spectacle.
I lived in Spain for awhile and a number of the grand oldcathedrals would chargetourists an entry fee for coming inoutside of religious services. The buildings for the most part were in bad repair and the fees went to cover the most basic efforts and restoration and preservation. It would seem an odd rule that people who come to see great paintings and great architecture can't be asked to pay a little to help preserve it.

Is that actually what's going on? Because your quoted portion doesn't indicate that, and merely talks about the church wanting to "swell its coffers." So which is it? Taking in money just because they can or do then intend to use that money to actually restore the painting properly? If it is to pay for the restoration, I'd add that to the post.

Hey that works for me but some people catch on to how you perceive them and get an attitude about it.
So. You have to expect them to be Devils but treat them as angels and then when they fail, you can look all disappointed and stuff and make them feel bad. (but since they're Devils, they don't give a shit how bad you feel)
I always expect (and look for) the worst.
When I express those thoughts though I always catch a lot of flak here about being an eeyore or a troll.

In my experience, nearly all of the big churches in Europe charge sightseers for going in. They don't charge parishioners. I don't have a problem with that at all. Parishioners are pretty scarce in Europe these days and those old buildings are art and architectural treasures that require lots of upkeep.

bad repair and the fees went to cover the most basic efforts and
restoration and preservation. It would seem an odd rule that people who
come to see great paintings and great architecture can't be asked to pay
a little to help preserve it.

I can see your point about that, I suppose. It just goes against my natural inclinations to charge an entrance fee for admission to a house of worship. Perhaps outside of service times, for the express purpose of viewing artistic works is a reasonable exception.

Apparently I have been insufficiently clear. I do not believe that she is entitled to a cut of the money that is being made from this. I do not know how to make that any clearer. Actually trying to fake like you have some claim on said money that you don't. That is corruption. Like I said, a smarter woman would offer to by autographs, or paint portraits just outside the church. Then she would have all the money she probably wanted to go to "charity". Though I think at that point, when the money was actually hers, we would see how charitable she really was.
Perhaps she likes the fame and doesn't want to see the work restored to original form and her little contribution forever erased? Is that greedy enough for you? So her desires are satisfied so long as the Church never has enough money to restore the painting.

There is no going back on that one.
I'm no restoration expert by any means but that one is fucked.
All that can be hoped for is that a prior photo was taken to hopefully preserve the original image.

Actually, you'd be amazed at what restorers can do with stuff anyone would think was hopeless.
I saw a wonderful exhibit at the Getty Museum years ago, showing the process of restoring a painting that had been through a firefight in Sarajevo. The exhibit consisted of a "before" photograph of the painting, photographs of every step of the process, samples of some of the materials used, and finally the painting itself. The Getty folks did such a beautiful job that, looking at the painting, I couldn't see where any of the damage had been, except that as I recall, they deliberately left one patch in the background, about 1" square, unrestored. (I don't remember if they were going to restore that bit after the exhibit was over, or leave it unrestored to document that part of the painting's history. Either decision seems valid to me.)
