Some Perspective On Civilization From Victor Davis Hanson

By way of today's Transom, there's a very good, if somewhat long, Hoover Institution interview with Victor Davis Hanson that's well worth your time.

The decline in civility—in the idea of being a good citizen—has taken a particularly tough toll on men, who have not adjusted to today’s post-industrial economy as fluidly as women have. “As society has been cut off from the drudgery of nature and the tragic view of things, it has become whiney. This is probably sexist, but it’s had a more direct effect on the males of the species who have had their muscular world radically redefined.”

“All the young men I knew growing up knew how to do these things. But the young kids I see today don’t know how to run a lawn mower or a chain saw. Today’s male lives at home. He kinda’ sorta’ dates a girl, kinda’ sorta’ doesn’t date her. He is becoming superfluous as a bread-winner and family head."

In the ancient world, farming and war instilled a sense of duty and responsibility in men. Today? “Men don’t know much about farming, and few are in the military, but most know a great deal about video games,” says Hanson.

Hanson comes back to the virtue of self-reliance and the toll its absence is taking on society: “Today’s suburban American has a therapeutic view of the world. We think we all die in our sleep at 90 years old without ever being sick. We don’t expect to lose our jobs. When these things happen, we go to counseling, thinking life’s not fair. Or we look to the government for help.”

“The society’s attitude toward the citizen—that we will guarantee you a degree of material and psychological security—is something that we can’t honor.” He adds: “I think that we are emasculating the citizen.”

There's a lot of carping about the Romney campaign going around on the Interwebs this morning, but I fear there's a more substantive reason than the deep details of how his convention speech was prepared that explains why he doesn't have a double-digit lead over TFG.

People like free stuff. Mean guy Romney wants to take it away and put our civilization back on a paying basis. A significant amount of the SCOAMF's support is just this simple to explain.

This election isn't a battle between the haves and have-nots, as the Democrats want to paint it.

It's a battle between the responsible and the irresponsible; the realistic and the unrealistic; the self-reliant and the dependent.

Frankly, it's a battle between an adult's view of the world and a child's. And the adults are precariously close to losing.

22 I believe that the generation that won World War II, that made the US the world's undisputed superpower, and that created the prosperity that made us all comfortable and safe, spoiled the generations that have followed. We have become accustomed to the The Easy Life. And now we vote for politicians that promise us more of that ease and comfort.

The Baby Boomers are just that- a bunch of babies. We bang on our high chairs until the nice politician sticks a pacifier in our mouths. So we vote for them over and over.

Our politicians have mastered the art of coddling us and bribing us with our own money. Bread and circuses.

Being fairly shut in, they watch a lot of TV, and I'm spending too much time keeping their spirits up in the face of the lies and damn lies regarding polls, but it's a small price to pay to get those votes.

I will also be taking them to the polls if that's what it takes to get them there.

36 Boy, math is hard. Read datechguyblog.com today. Observe reality.

Which candidate is frantically scrambling to cover up obvious negative events? Which candidate is caught out in obvious falsehoods about said negative events? Why is the media so desperate to sow discord and create dissension in the other candidate's support ranks?

Come on, the answers are not hard.

Which campaign is calm and methodical and which campaign is frantic and desperate to change the subject. Which campaign draws attendance at events and which doesn't? Which campaign is visibly fundraising and which is doing it behind closed doors, without obvious fanfare?

Open your eyes, naysayers. Or more accurately, those naysayers that aren't intentionally sowing discord to help their guy. False flags everywhere.

Obama is losing. Watch what they do, not what they say. Avoid falling for the misdirection. This is only going to get uglier. Count on it. We must only work harder, donate more, and steel our spines even firmer to persevere.

Eyes on the prize. Be not afraid.

While many women are smart, and Heather Radish is on the top of my list of smart women, no woman has ever been /required/ by her society to reason, nor be fully responsible for the consequences of bad acts- not to the extent a man has been.
As it turns out, now nobody's responsible for anything, but the reason this is true is at least tosome extent due to the feminization of the government.

only does the country look at itself differently, but the world looks at
America differently. If I’m reaching out to the Muslim world, they
understand that I’ve lived in a Muslim country, and I may be a
Christian, but I also understand their point of view…

My sister is half-Indonesian. I traveled there all the way

happens in these countries, and the cultures and the perspectives that
these folks have. And those are powerful tools for us to be able to
reach out to the world.

It was September 1980 as I recall.

88 Makers and takers..

Our country is almost 1/2 takers, taking their handouts from the other half who are working their asses off.

Obama's goal is to nudge the takers in a majority.. a solid majority if he can, thus guaranteeing his party power for many election cycles, or until the money runs out - whichever comes first. (and by "money runs out", I mean before the world stops buying our worthless paper that we are using to pay for all this shit.)

90 @44 Thanks but I'm just posting what seems obvious to me. I remember McCain losing badly in September and October and feeling a desire to hope for reality to change. If Romney were really losing I'm confident I'd feel the same way. I don't.

I'm not hoping for miracles because they are unnecessary. Romney isn't losing.

It is possible that I'm completely wrong and the polling firm I work for isn't getting the numbers we are getting, but I doubt it. You always want to be self-critical and not delude yourself. I see what the campaigns are dong and where they are spending their money and what priorities they have.

We all can do the math on where this campaign is if we only open our eyes.

Romney is a methodical, numbers and results-driven guy. He's spent 6+ years and hundreds of millions of dollars to formulate a plan to win this thing.

I'm confident that they have game-planned an almost-incomprehensible number of scenarios for the last 50 days. Columnists, TV news, and bloggers have to fill content every day or readers and ad dollars leave. This leads to some of the most counter-factual and stupid crap being written and called "analysis." 91 I saw that PA poll last Friday. The Stinquirer also has Zero up in NJ by 14. I couldn't find the partisan splits anywhere.
I was on the "Finally, this is the year for PA!!" bandwagon. I still think Romney can pull it out depending on the voter ID ruling by the PA Supremes. But I got a bad vibe from the hearing last week.
There isn't nearly as muchenthusiasm for Zero in the city as in 2008, but I can't get a gauge on what, if any, support Romney has. Those of us who are going to vote for him don't dare put bumper stickers or window signs up (most of us in the city don't have front yards). I haven't been out to the 'burbs in awhile so I don't know how it looks out there. I hardly watch network TV so I don't see any commercials by either side. I'm still getting fundraising phone calls (on my cell, no less) from the Romney people, if that means anything.

109 This election isn't a battle between the haves and have-nots, as the Democrats want to paint it. It's a battle between the responsible and the irresponsible; the realistic and the unrealistic; the self-reliant and the dependent.

I tried to make this point over the weekend in a horribly-formatted post. Trying again:

Gallup:

Married registered voters prefer Republican challenger Mitt Romney over Democratic President Barack Obama by 54% to 39%, according to Gallup data collected from June to August. On the other hand, nonmarried voters break strongly for the president over Romney, 56% to 35%. Marriage is a significant predictor of presidential vote choice even after income, age, race, gender, education, religiosity, region, and having minor children are statistically controlled for.

http://tinyurl.com/99cyqbl

A lot of conservatives *yawn* when the subject of declining marriage rates come up, they figure it’s one of them social issues, has nothing to do with winning elections. But in a Makers v. Takers electorate, those are our people.

Less marriage = more Takers. More out-of-wedlock births = more Takers. More Takers = bye bye GOP.

Time to start talking about this, openly. For tactical reasons. We cannot win elections if this trend continues unchallenged. Can. Not. Win.

Reason.com offers explanations for a possible Obama victory. Win or lose this November, we have to recognize that the numbers of Takers v. Makers are moving in a bad direction:

The third possible explanation is one I hope is not true, but that lurks as a fear in the minds of many of those dismayed by the polls. That is that the *“takers” have started to outnumber, and outvote, the “makers.”* Add together the 46.7 million Americans on food stamps, the 8.7 million Americans receiving Pell Grants, the 7.6 million unionized government employees, and weigh them against the top 5% of income earners, the roughly 7 million taxpayers making more than about $154,000 a year, who earn about 32% of the adjusted gross income and pay about 59% of the nation’s individual income taxes. We have all kinds of systems and laws in America for protecting the rights of unpopular minorities, but no one has quite figured out how to prevent an election from devolving into “four wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.”

http://tinyurl.com/8hrzhbn

Conservatives need to acknowledge this trend and alter their approach. We are no longer campaigning to elect a particular party. We have to campaign to save the very concept of individual responsibility

I had not realized this bugged me, until my Marine and i hooked up. He would apologize for how rough he sounded and i couldn't help but laugh... I liked listening to a man talk like a (little bit rough) man better.
The ex working in Hollywood, and all the idiom that went with it was so brittle, whiny and counterfit, even when they were swearing, that the marine barking every once in a while at least sounded manly and honest.

And society ate it up. And impressionable mush-minds watched, and assumed that this was the way the world really works.

116 The fallacy of the makers/takers argument is the assumption that once someone becomes a taker, they want to remain there.

That might be true in a third world country where wealth is determined by cronyism, but in the US there are countless examples of people pulling themselves up from poverty and making a comfortable life for themselves.

There are plenty of people who are happy to remain government dependent, but the notion that close to 50% of the voters feel that way, when close to 50% of the voters are getting some form of government assistance is a fallacy.

Back in 2001 I spent 3 months on unemployment. I hated it it more than anything in my life.

that anybody needs to defend Wall Street. There are probably more
Democrats on Wall Street than there are Republicans, and their sins have

The biggest mistake is that Democrats have forged this bond between
the “sins of Wall Street” and raising taxes on the “rich.” It’s an easy

151 That might be true in a third world country where wealth is determined by cronyism, but in the US there are countless examples of people pulling themselves up from poverty and making a comfortable life for themselves.

But it's not up from poverty anymore. More and more working class families are growing dependent. That's the dangerous trend.

There are plenty of people who are happy to remain government dependent, but the notion that close to 50% of the voters feel that way, when close to 50% of the voters are getting some form of government assistance is a fallacy

The fallacy here is the notion that it's only thedirect recipients who will vote in support of increasing assistance, when in factthere is a large group of moderates/independents/liberals who will vote liberal not because they receive aid, but because they thinkothers need it.The Democratic Party could not survive without them.

Pretty much. Laziness, dependency, and irresponsibility cost money and the Federal Government has just about burnt it all up. The people VDH is talking about will get a chance to redeem themselves when the government's role in their lives dissolves.

My argument is that the true "takers" is not as close to 50% as everyone is thinking. If it were that big, then we wouldn't have a functioning economy.

Seriously this cultural situation gets me down. producers and military are treated like fools and chumps. Hell even in the military the workhorse NCOs are treated that way. Somethings gotta change. we are not rented mules. We either kick over the traces and shatter the wagon, or let them pull it themselves. But its gotten so heavy we will die if we just keep pulling without question, while they beat us, yelling "Faster! faster!"

And yeah in the military some of the workhorses are run into the ground until the quit or die. Its sad. I heard someone tell me sadly "The system is broken. They dont want to do things right or fix anything, all they care about is politics and their own careers"

It just wasn't in the positive manner that so many thought was what he meant.

Parse : parse/pärs/
Verb: Analyse (a sentence) into its component parts and describe their syntactic roles.
Noun: An act of or the result obtained by parsing a string or a text.

<<"Frankly, it's a battle between an adult's view of the world and a child's. And the adults are precariously close to losing.">>
I've said it before. There's a reason why liberal politics appeal to young people - they are the party of adolesence. They are utopian idealists with a nasty streak of intolerance when things aren't going their way. They believe in double-standards - onefor themselves (and their "cool friends") and other people they don't like. When things go wrong, they cry about life not being fair. They are elitists. They worship the superficial over substance.Liberals do not want to take responsibility for the consequences of their own actions when things go wrong. They expect to be bailed out, but are rarely grateful to the people who help them after things get better.

Conservatives are the party of old, tightassed, crew cut-wearing dads and moms who won't let you date boys with tattoos. We expect everyone to live by rules - more so, the same rules as everyone else regardless of how pretty they are or what toys they have. We invented the phrase "no one said life was fair." We make you eat your vegetables before dessert. We don't expect handouts but are usually the ones offering to help when the shit hits the fan. We're the mom and dad party.

Sure there's a problem with that. Men no longer know how to treat a woman with respect that is necessary to have a successful long term relationship. 210 Definitely OT
A few threads back, someone posted about Aussies calling US citizens "seppos"
Explanation - an old custom Down Under but sadly dying out with the oldies is the use of rhyming slang
For example - plates of meat means feet, having a Barry Crocker(a now dead Aussie TV personality), means having having a shocker of a day

So calling you a seppo in rhyming slang - Yank > septic tank> seppo - well it sort of rhymes
Nothing to do with your sewerage systems!
BTW we had our own delightful Aussie muzzies have a violent (what else) protest in the Sydney CBD last Saturday and I'm sure you've seen pics of the little boy holding that poster with that peaceful message (Behead All Those who Insult the Prophet) with mummy proudly taking a photo on her phone

We were in the city having a birthday lunch at a club right where these peaceful protesters were bashing police officers and screaming Allah Akbar and we missed it all!

<< Women have been trying to pussify the men in this country for about 40 years now.>>

Feminists have, and they've succeeded, at least with their own kids.

About 10 years ago a friend and I said something to a drunk kid in his 20's that he aparently didn't like. He stormed off, drunkenly muttering, then reappeared 10 minutes later with his angry girlfriend in tow. She proceeded to harangue us about being bad people, tell us what a wonderful, sensitive guy he is, and generally bitch-shame us into submission. It took both of us a week to stop laughing. That's the modern male response ? I'm going to go get my girlfriend ?

One other observation - notice how many "kick-ass-chick" movies we've seen since the 1990's ? Starting with the "Buffy" movie, then we get TV shows, the Ultraviolets, Dominos, Resident Evils, Sucker Punch - I can't begin to list them all.

I think it has a lot to do with single-mommy households and weak (or absent) father figures. Women are the "strong horses" of the last few generations.

220 In the ancient world, farming and war instilled a sense of duty and responsibility in men. Today? “Men don’t know much about farming, and few are in the military, but most know a great deal about video games,” says Hanson.

Didn't Hanson see all the occupoopers who took over a few acres of UC Berkeley property to become collectivized organic farmers?

Why, all that's needed to farm are daily lectures, work assignments, some water jugs, and someone to unload the seedlings from Home Depot

The kick ass chick movies aren't as big a problem as the weak female protagonists.

The confused and weak male crap (Crime and Punishment, thinking of you) is irritating too. Ok, even Hamlet. Plenty of particularly WTF thinking.

I don't know about the causes but I saw an end of the world as we know it special on some network, Discovery I think it was. They interview people as to how they would survive after a global or even national catasrophe. There were the ususal I will move into the hinterlands and grow my own food, build a cabin, etc. types. There were also those who admitted they were clueless as to any abilities to do this, so they would use violence and steal what they needed, sell it, and kill off the others. Yes, they actually admitted this, which they rationalized as," survival of the fittest baby," to quote one of the idiots. When it was pointed out that sooner or later there would be nothing left to steal, they were surprised and didn't know what to do.

Of course my kids like playing Wii or DS, but we're trying to keep them involved in the real world too. My 12YO spent the weekend at Girl Scout camp learning to tie knots and hiking with her friends. And I spent the weekend trying to fix my car. The damned power window failed with the window down! But the part is only $100, and I can do the work, so why not? Sure, I killed half of our landscaping this summer through neglect. And I'd probably starve to death if I were forced to grow my own food. But there are other things that I can do. And I'm a cheap enough bastard to try to do them. No car payments since '02! I've fixed some of my kids' stuff too, so hopefully they are absorbing the fact that you don't always have to just throw it away and buy a new one.

242 The idea of the emasculated American reminds me of something I have noticed (or at least has drawn my attention the last few years). It seems much more common for a young man to be in the passenger seat of a car with a woman driving. "Back in my day"...I know. But really, about the only excuse for this would have been the guy was too drunk, injured, or otherwise incapacitated, and so the girl had to drive. Anybody have any stats to back this up?

The guy has become the pampered, ornamental feature of the modernrelationship, in which the girl brings the money, car, and any shred of responsibility. While this might seem superficially attractive tothe guy, it's eventually ennervating. There's only so much X-box you can play before you realize, if you have this much time for video games and music, then you really aren't that essential to anything real.Just another symptom of the death of the culture of the West.

It is "Cougaring" of our young men. A friend of MrsCaniac decided a few years ago that the "Cougar" lifestyle was going to be for her. She gets her "Cub", and off they go. After 2 years of him laying about the house smoking dope, playing video games, living in her house, driving her car, having her cook and clean, buy his groceries, pay for his trips, and buy him clothes, they broke up. He still hasn't gotten a job, and still smokes his dope and kills all the goblins he can in his videogames. He is 30 years old. This "kid" is the face of Obamacare.

I've been thinking about this subject for a while. Earlier this year I had some time to do some genealogy. Looking at census report after census report, I was struck by how many people had to actually work - physical labor - in the 1800's. Most of my ancestors arrived here before the Revolutionary War, yet they were still farmers, sailors, fishermen, sailmakers, grocers, laborers, etc in the 19th century. It seems kind of obvious now, but I was astounded to think about their lives and realize how physically hard my ancestors had to work virtually all their lives.
I think we've lost something when we fail to provide opportunities for hard work to boys and men today.

273 My car, though a "standard" four-door sedan, is a little too small for the family of four. Sure, it can get us where we need to go if needed, but the family as a whole prefers Mrs. Reason's assigned vehicle, the Suburban.

As it is Mrs. Reason's assigned vehicle, Mrs. Reason usually drives it, even when I am one of the passengers.

I am OK with this, because it means that the Passenger -> Driver Correction Chatter is reduced to near-zero.

My father-in-law is, by all accounts, a man's man. Dude knows how to fix everything in, on, and under the house, and the only thing that stops him from building everything he needs is sheer age. He is a man's man, and a guy that I look up to literally as a second father. Whenever he and his wife go anywhere, he lets her drive too. And he openly admits that it is for precisely the same reason that I give above.

Part of being a man is problem-solving. Sometimes the best solution to a problem is simply to remove yourself from an unnecessary spotlight.

277 you're putting too much value on economics.

not to say this election isn't about the economy, because it is obviously. but parties for certain people are more about cultural identity than anything. a lot of liberals honestly have swallowed the idea that conservatives are big meanie grumpy white men and will never vote for them. there's also people for whom Obama's social liberalism makes him a lock regardless of how bad the economy is. same in reverse for a good chunk of the conservative base.

i get that places like Reason _want_ the explanation of Obama's level of support to be entirely about how large our welfare state is, because they hate the cultural side of the GOP and wish it would go away, but it doesn't explain why Democrats get a significant amount of support from super-rich people for instance.
