New Woodward Book: "It was increasingly clear that no one was running Washington. That was trouble for everyone, but especially for Obama."

The book uncovers ”an explosive mix of dysfunction, miscommunication, and misunderstandings," as ABCNews puts it.

Obama didn't have a Plan B in the debt negotiation crisis.

That's telling for a couple of reasons. For one, Obama continues to greatly overestimate himself. He seemed to think his charisma would be enough to secure Plan A (a massive tax increase). He was apparently so taken with his ability to convince people that he didn't bother drawing up a Plan B.

For two, this was an extremely important thing. Not having a Plan B was reckless disregard for the financial health of the country.

In the end, the "Adults in the Room" -- and I use that term advisedly -- had to simply exclude Obama from the process and come up with the godawful sequestration compromise we now have.

Obama got snippy about it.

As the nation's leaders raced to avert a default that could have shattered the financial markets' confidence and imperiled the world's economy, Obama convened an urgent meeting with top congressional leaders in the White House. According to Woodward, House Speaker John Boehner pointedly told the president that the lawmakers were working on a plan and wouldn't negotiate with him.

Obama, surprised, told Boehner and the others that they could not exclude him from the process, Woodward reports.

"I've got to sign this bill," he is quoted as saying.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid then said the four leaders wanted to speak privately, asking Obama to leave a meeting he had called "in his own house," in Woodward's words. The president, fuming, agreed to let them talk.

"This was it," Woodward writes. "Congress was taking over."

Another juicy tidbit is that Nancy Pelosi put Obama on mute as he yapped long-windedly on the phone about his General Theory of Everything or whatnot. She denies this, but Woodward has a source from other people in the room.

First decision of hers I agree with.

He also alienated people with his arrogance (BREAKING!), and thought Joe Biden was a capable enough persuader to be called "The Republican Whisperer."

Now, notice the wide gulf between Obama's belief in his ability to communicate effectively with people and his actual lack of most such ability. And notice that NYT hack Kristof gives Obama a B on the economy (a B!) but an "F" in communications.

Communications, the one thing Obama will admit to not having a godlike competency about.

But now revisit his certitude that simply jawboning Boehner would cause him agree to raise tax-breaks -- and he was so certain he didn't bother with a fall-back position.

Isn't part of competency knowing your actual areas of strength and areas of weakness?

Now consider this: Obama kind of sucks at everything, including golf and basketball, and also quitting smoking, but the one thing he's supposedly good at is communicating.

Compare that to the Great Liberal Meme that "messaging" is the one and only area in which Obama fails.

Doesn't this mean he's a failure at everything? He's even a failure at the one thing he's supposedly so amazing at.

Oh: Big speaker at DNC's (non-televised) panel on job creation?

The Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am.

People defend this by noting he's a businessman. Um.... not really. When you consider a business, the defining feature of it is the Force Multiplication factor. Things that are really "businesses" are involved in the systematization of services and crafts so that quality goods or services can be provided by its employees -- who are not necessarily craftsmen or highly skilled themselves.

While it's true that artists sign licensing agreements and such, the heart of what they do is a craft. Only they can do it. The Black Eyed Peas cannot franchise themselves. (Bands have tried something like this; it doesn't work.) They cannot set up a systematized, automated process to produce more anodyne, disposable commercial jingles. Well, I mean, they do do that, but it's not automated; they personally do this.

So he's not a "businessman" in any real sense. He's an artist, like many others, who knows how to sign the shit out of a contract.

That's not really a knock on artists. But their skills are personal-level crafts, and are not systematized so that lots of workers in farflung factories can replicate them.

A craftsman can be a businessman, too. But just because you make money at a craft doesn't mean you know a lick about business.

And the sad thing is that it's exactly the opposite. Obama certainly isn't the skilled orator the Media would have had us believe in 2008, but he is more-or-less proficient, and his hagiographers in the Media see to it that his message is carried (often despite him). So I'd give him a solid B in communications.

The Economy, by any rational measure, is a catastrophe, and he deserves an F.

69 One of the very few lessons I learned in college was from a fourth year level management class. I skipped the preliminary first three years of classes, because that's what I do. But anyway, we had to individually determine what sequence of actions we would undertake if we suddenly found ourselves stranded on the moon. There apparently is an exactly correct sequence. We handed in our answers and were graded. We then were formed into groups where we discussed the options available and formed a consensus, then took the test again.

It was pretty amazing how a group of people with the lowest scores could, by thinking it through, giving each other time to argue for or against some action could raise their score to the highest group.

But I was the leader of that group. I discarded my ego for fifteen minutes and let everyone speak --each person brought some level of expertise on some area, and in the end we all nodded our heads in satisfaction. Our score was not perfect, but it was the highest of all of the groups. From worst to first, as they say.

Contrast and compare to an egomaniac like 0bama, who actually believes he is the smartest person in the room.

This is why I'll proudly vote for Romney, as often as possible -- because I believe he knows how to gather a group together and form the best possible solution -- not inflict his ego upon everyone.

This guy is like the third-rate South American Major that tries a coup and surprisingly succeeds. He has no clue on what to do, and no idea how things work. He has grand plans, but has neveraccomplished a thing, and never gets anything done.

I thought maybe, if he had some decent advisors, he could be successful. Look at what he chose:
Tax Cheat Timmy
Egg-head Chu
Keep your enemies Closer, Hilary Machiavelli
The Veterans are all Nazi's Napolitano
What's Her Fat, The Obese Surgeon General
Pardons for sale and Black Power for Us, Eric Holder
And a bunch of other nameless hacks, mostly from academia, where they never, ever, had to run anything except their mouths and their TA's.

These clowns and their deputies and assistantsare so useless, that Obama does not even bother to have cabinet meetings with them. And they take their cues from the top, President Useless himself.

84 Since he showed up at the White House his method has been to either declare that something is needed (such as stimulus and health care legislation) or wait until the issue is percolating (such as the debt ceiling increase), tell Congress to do something, and when a bill gets passed to send it his way. When things down Pennsylvania Avenue are not progressing to his liking he'll swoop in with the bully pulpit, give speeches, call meetings, and proclaim that Congress must act. Sometimes he gets a bill (stimulus, health care) and sometimes he doesn't (debt ceiling increase but no larger compromise on spending and taxes). Wash, rinse, repeat. Any further involvement would be too much work.

I think he did. I'm biased I am an ex DeWine low level volunteer but I got to watch Boehner a few times from my peripheral vision. He is a good card player, friendly enough, loyal to his friends and doesn't bet on losing hands. He took a BIG risk with the voter base that sent him but had he stabilized the entitlements he probably could have gotten a 750 billion or so budget.

90 But I was the leader of that group. I discarded my ego for fifteen minutes and let everyone speak --each person brought some level of expertise on some area, and in the end we all nodded our heads in satisfaction. Our score was not perfect, but it was the highest of all of the groups. From worst to first, as they say.

Can I guess that the group that originally had the guy with the highest score didn't really improve much in the group score beyond his original score. Thinking his idea was best and so they just went with that with only a few changes.

Teh JEF is a Rock Star. Of course he had to be excluded from the process ... he knows nothing about finances, he just needs to be seen to act and to be seen to look good.

I expect his campaign to run this way. He's already behind and in panic mode: push the right buttons over the next 2 months and he and his campaign will crumble. 4 years of 8.2% Unemployment and The Economy are excellent buttons ...

It surprises me that the top 4 congressional leaders pointedly left Obama out of the negotiations. That
explains the Chinese rejection of positions proposed by Secretary
Clinton and the diplomatic insult from a cancellation of her audience
with China's likely next leader, Xi Jinping. Both China and the US told
the press corps the cancellation was not an insult, but everyone knows
China dissed the US and got away with it. Clinton
appears not to have been well briefed on the Chinese legal position
about sovereignty issues. She had lots of high level meetings and
dinners, but the take away message is a total rejection of US compromise
suggestions for settling South China Sea ownership claims and a pointed
warning against US meddling in issues involving Chinese sovereignty. To
reiterate, Chinese leaders have no flexibility on issues of sovereignty
in light of the passage of the 2005 anti-secession law. The Clinton
visit was a diplomatic humiliation for the US. Nevertheless, the Chinese
have no military capability to match that which the US can bring to
bear on the issue of maintaining freedom of the seas.

When Romney wins, watch what happens.

The man has a rolodex of people who actually have gotten shit done. They will either step up or provide some of their best to Romney for this administration. The media and Democrats will hate his cabinet, because they are the antithesis of the credentialed cretins and idiots Obama has.

The scary part is Romney will be effective in getting things done, and as a conservative, I am afraid I may not like everything he does.

118 Or are the "journalistic" (and I use that term VERY loosely) gloves
finally coming off because everyone who has been biting their tongue
until now realizes that if they don't say something this guy will be in
office for 4 more LOOOOONG years?
--

Teresa, it might be that, or simply that there's nothing else they can say. If somebody wants to write a book about Obama, what would they have to print if they left out everything that makes him look bad? The truth is the truth, and even if they omitted large chunks, what would a writer say? Unless they want to fabricate a lot, it just leaves blank pages. Which don't sell.

I hope they've turned a corner but it's hard to tell. Obama treats everyone poorly including the media, so maybe some of the built up resentment is finally spilling out.

Well yeah, if you look at it from the liberal point of view. If you troll the lefty blogs you soon learn that it is just *common sense* and *undeniable fact* that taxes have to be raised. From their point of view it is beyond partisanship - it is just what "smart people" believe. He went all-in with the liberal position on taxes because he is a liberal, and he actually believes his own liberalism. (Shocking!) And, his over-hyped sense of communication led him to conclude that he could convert John Boehner, leader of the Republicans, to adopt the left-wing point of view because it is just so undeniable factually factual that taxes must be raised.

231 In the end, the "Adults in the Room" -- and I use that term advisedly -- had to simply exclude Obama from the process and come up with the godawful sequestration compromise we now have.

And, BTW, we extremists had warned the Weeping Boner about even trying to deal in good faith with a piece of shit who had never done anything in good faith in his whole miserable waste of a life. The Weeper screwed up when he ignored us - those of us with brains who had actually observed the Indonesian - and pressed ahead with his "moderation" and "collegiality" with an enemy of civilization. Of course, Boner got a boner just out of fucking over the Tea Party, so it's not as if he was doing this all out of total stupidity - just part stupidity and part assholishness.

Trying to deal in a civilized manner with the uncivilized is an exercise in futility and a recipe for sure disaster.

I was there. Doesn't seem like that long ago. I will be forever grateful to my former employer for enabling me to go to the game. A lifetime memory
_______________________

I spent $120, which was a fortune for me at the time, to sit in the lower deck of left field for his last game in September 2001, which was rescheduled because of the terrorist attacks. During the pre-game festivities I recall looking at the Orioles' dugout, which was directly across the field from me, seeing a large mop of white hair, and exclaiming to the guy who was there with me, "Crap, Clinton's here." Indeed he was, and he made a speech in recognition of the occasion. Remarkably there were some boos mixed in with the cheers, and to this day I think it had more to do with people being annoyed that a politician had to show up.

I know, country isn't much more than pop nowadays but it makes a difference to me if I know that an artist thinks like I do.

And the deficit will also drop like a rock.
And 100,000lawyers and 100,000 accountants will be thrown out of work.
But your elected officials will not be able to pass out goodies and play favorites.

So this will never happen.

what we can do in the next four years, and that’s why I’m running for a
second term as President of the United States.

Utterly meaningless. Defining the goals, ie the problems that need to be solved, isn't the problem.

THIS is his rationale for a 2nd term? Unless there's more meat to "his plan" Romney's gotta win in a landslide. If that's all Obama has, he has nothing.

368 ErikW.. yes Murder on Country Row. The first time I ever heard that song was when my daughter and I drove to Arizona in the summer of 2001. I had listened to country for years but had kind of gotten away from it. She had a bunch of country songs recorded on a CD. Another favorite is Only in America by Brooks and Dunn. I loved that song. Only a few short months later our country was attacked and has never been the same. I look back on those days in July and August with fondness and nostalgia. Would give my right arm to be back in those times before 9/11.

385 If I deleted all of the songs on my iTunes playlist that was made by a crazy Liberal, I'd probably not have much music to listen to...I don't care about the politics of a musician (Springsteen, Dylan, et al), I care more if an act I like comes out with a crappy record. Like teh gheys, being able to create music (or any art form) is a genetic thing. I don't have that creative gene but Dave Grohl sure does. I like rock and roll and his band is one of the last of a dying breed. Other than country music, is there a place for conservatives? In the end, its just music and regardless of politics, music makes a dreary day brighter.

You never go wrong pandering to the ego of young people, they are certain they are terribly important and will change the world for the better. That's where the whole "we are the ones we've been waiting for" crap came from and why it did so well. Egotistical, stupid, and empty but popular and effective.

Then again, I doubt Scarlett Johannson has ever voted in her life except between the couch and the desk when she was auditioning for a part.

OK, she claims she grew up poor (a running them with every speaker at this convention). From Wiki:

Johansson was born in New York City on November 22, 1984.Her father, Karsten Johansson, is a Danish-born architect originally from Copenhagen, and her paternal grandfather, Ejner Johansson, was a screenwriter and director. Her mother, Melanie Sloan, a producer, comes from an Ashkenazi Jewish family from the Bronx

Johansson grew up in a household with "little money", and with a mother who was a "film buff". She and her brother, Hunter, attended P.S. 41 in upper-middle-class Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan for elementary school. Johansson began her theatrical training by attending and graduating from Professional Children's School in Manhattan in 2002.

Her dad was a fricking architect. They lived in NYC, one of the most expensive places to live in the nation. If they didn't have any money, it was by choices they made. Give me a frigging break.

399 Surprisingly enough Will.I.Am started a car company in the hood where he grew up. I don't know how it is doing but I would expect its return as an investment would be even poorer than GM's... which is to say going broke quickly rather than slowly.

His idea of designing a car was to draw a picture of what he wanted the body to look like on his computer.

409 I think Ace is wrong about will.whatever. It's clear to me that he is on to something. I think the future of the American economy is a Karaoke Progress Administration (KPA) where the unemployed are assigned to various pop/rap hybrid bands and are sent on tour playing free shows to those millions rendered jobless and homeless by Obama's policies. Of course, they'll have to be able to work without amplification due to the rolling blackouts and power grid failures that will inevitably result when the EPA's Uniform National Invidious Carbon Obsolescence Reform Network (UNICORN) Plan fails spectacularly . What do you know troubadours, it will be like the good old days of the middle ages. Personally I can't wait to experience life without ice and air conditioning maybe we'll have a plague. We can all be noble savages or at least live like them. But I digress, back to the KPA. We can also have another group of unemployed who are assigned to be entertainment reporters who follow the bands around, write glowing profiles of them and pretending anyone cares what they think. We could probably find a good number of unemployed sex workers (you won't even be able to give it away in a second Obama administration unless Obama loosens food stamp restrictions to allow use of prostitutes) to act as groupies and on and on. Result = full employment, golden diapers etc. Hollywood, is there anything they can't fix?
