Obama: 'I've Got Great Confidence in My Ability to Sway the American People'

Part of Bob Woodward's The Price of Politics leaked. Rick Klein at ABC has an advance look. Read the whole thing.

To recap, back in July of 2011, the Boehner-Obama budget talks fell apart. Speaker Boehner had gone way out on a limb, and at one point it looked like they had a deal that included tax increases and spending cuts, but in a case of the most inopportune kibitzing since the dawn of time, the "gang of six" chimed in at that precise moment with their own plan, which included even greater tax revenue increases. So, of course, Obama thought he could do better, and he pulled back from the agreement, demanding another 400 billion in tax revenue.

"But at a critical juncture, with an agreement tantalizingly close, Obama pressed Boehner for additional taxes as part of a final deal -- a miscalculation, in retrospect, given how far the House speaker felt he'd already gone."

. . .

When Boehner finally did call back, he jettisoned the entire deal. Obama lost his famous cool, according to Woodward, with a "flash of pure fury" coming from the president; one staffer in the room said Obama gripped the phone so tightly he thought he would break it.

"He was spewing coals," Boehner told Woodward, in what is described as a borderline "presidential tirade."

"He was pissed…. He wasn't going to get a damn dime more out of me. He knew how far out on a limb I was. But he was hot. It was clear to me that coming to an agreement with him was not going to happen, and that I had to go to Plan B."

But the president claims he was "merely raising the possibility" of putting more tax revenue in to the deal. Anyone believe that? According to Speaker Boehner, it was a demand for $400 billion more, "despite the earlier agreement of no more than $800 billion in total revenue." So the parties had an agreement, but the president thought he could do even better and killed it with an absurd deal-breaker. Then, of course, when the deal fell through, he reacted with rage. Someone with executive experience wouldn't have handled things that way. The upshot was that people began to feel no one was in charge.

Woodward issues a harsh judgment on White House and congressional leaders for failing to act boldly at a moment of crisis. Particular blame falls on the president.

"It was increasingly clear that no one was running Washington. That was trouble for everyone, but especially for Obama," Woodward writes.

. . .

"The president was trying to get there. But there was nobody steering the ship underneath him," Boehner told Woodward. "They never had their act together. The president, I think, was ill-served by his team. Nobody in charge, no process. I just don't know how the place works. To this day, I can't tell you how the place works. There's no process for making a decision in this White House. There's nobody in charge."

Ill served by his team? I think Speaker Boehner is being charitable here. Obama calls the shots. Things may not run well, but Obama is in charge. It has something to do with that supreme confidence of his. No one on his staff could advise the man who thinks: "I'm a better speechwriter than my speechwriters"; "I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors"; "I think I could probably do every job on the campaign better than the people I’ll hire to do it"; "I’m gonna think I’m a better political director than my political director," and "I'd make a good chief of staff." Would a guy like that take advice on something he hasn't already delegated? I have no doubt he considers himself a great negotiator as well.

Woodward portrays a president who remained a supreme believer in his own powers of persuasion, even as he faltered in efforts to coax congressional leaders in both parties toward compromise. . . .

"John, I've got great confidence in my ability to sway the American people," Boehner quotes the president as having told him.

If he could only consider the possibility his great confidence may at the root of all his difficulties. All of them.

But he will be reelected. The white guilt/black power/I-expect-the-government-to-give-me-stuff/soak-the-rich bloc is larger than most conservatives will ever admit.

Whatever we say cannot now sway people who were "educated" to want to push affirmative action to its ultimate limit.

In the America of 50 years ago, Choom Boy would likely be living in a homeless shelter or commune. Today, he is the country's leader. How much lower can we go? We're about to find out.

If you disagree with my conclusion that the Traitor-in-Chief will beat the Rich White Boy, I can only say: I hope you're right. That would truly be the best thing that could happen to the country.

But the consequences of me being proved wrong will be far easier to take than those facing the people who, based on polls, the conclusions of squishy "pundits" and some inner feeling that the blind will somehow see, are convinced that the election is a sure thing for our side.

Right now, Republicans seem to expect that people will buy what they're saying based on logic. Too many of those they are trying to reach do not operate on logic; they are driven by feelings. And the "feelings" crowd will go for President Historic First©; they want the hamburger today, and don't give a thought to the bill coming due on Tuesday.

McScribbler,

Just to bring you out of your election funk, here is a bit of wisdom from Michael Barrone:

"Pollster Scott Rasmussen periodically estimates party identification on the basis of thousands of robocall interviews of likely voters.
His findings have been uncannily close to the exit polls. In the last quarter of 2008, his party ID numbers were 41 percent Democratic, 33 percent Republican. The 2008 exit poll showed Democrats ahead in party ID by 39 to 32 percent.
In the third quarter of 2010, Rasmussen pegged party ID as tied at 35 percent. The 2010 exit poll showed it exactly the same.
The third quarter of 2012 is not yet over. But the Rasmussen party ID numbers for the second and third quarters combined are ominous for Obama's party: 34 percent Democratic, 36 percent Republican. Republicans are up only 3 percent from 2008, but Democrats are down 7 percent."

The bullshit polls we're seeing are being weighted to unrealistic party ID numbers. If/when they are brought into line, your outlook on the coming landslide will brighten.

I think, at some point, you get to say "nope, we've tried. You WILL at least bring one of our budgets to the floor, or we will not authorize another continuing resolution. It will probably lose, but we at least want a vote."

That's the difference: With the Clinton situation (and that's only part of what got him reelected. Don't forget the oh-so-compelling Bob Dole), we didn't have 3 years of no budget. We didn't have 2 years of no budget.

At what point does principle become more important that politics? If the answer is "never" because then "we'll lose," then we've already lost, and all that's left is the screaming.

According to the Larry Mendte description ofan excerpt from the Woodward book - Pelousy was the one in charge:

What prefaced the "preazy goes ballistic" moment was a call to San Fran Nan. Obama described the budget deal to her. She told him it was out of the question, that they needed to include more tax revenue. Pelosi was in a meeting with other congresscritters, she put Preazy on *mute* - while he was still speaking - in order to address her concerns with the critters assembled in her office.

That's the high esteem in which she holds Dear Leader, mutes him while putting the kibosh on a deal that could enhance his political rep.

When are Republicans going to wise up and make an agreement that includes a tax increase but only after specific spending cuts have happened?

88 Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 365,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

It was the first drop in new claims since the week that ended August 4 and the lowest level since then as well.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims dipping to 370,000 last week. The prior week's figure was revised up to show 3,000 more applications than previously reported.

However, the four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends, edged up to 371,250.

99 Despite yesterday’s chaos on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in an attempt to restore Jerusalem and God to the Democratic Party 2012 platform, full pro-Israel language from the 2008 platform has not been and will not be restored. The current Democratic platform regarding Israel had a couple sentences restored yesterday:
Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths.
But the full language of the 2008 platform is still gone:
The United States and its Quartet partners should continue to isolate Hamas until it renounces terrorism, recognizes Israel’s right to exist, and abides by past agreements. Sustained American leadership for peace and security will require patient efforts and the personal commitment of the President of the United States. The creation of a Palestinian state through final status negotiations, together with an international compensation mechanism, should resolve the issue of Palestinian refugees by allowing them to settle there, rather than in Israel. All understand that it is unrealistic to expect the outcome of final status negotiations to be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949.
Each and every sentence of this is important. If the Democratic Party no longer believes that the United States and its partners should isolate Hamas, refuses to acknowledge that return to 1949 armistice lines is disastrous, and doesn’t think that the so-called “right of return” which would destroy Israel as a Jewish state is a non-starter, there’s nothing to talk about: the Party has excised virtually every important element from its Israel plank.
President Obama saw this platform before it was approved. He did not object. He still does not object to the excision of anti-Hamas language and preconditions to negotiations that would actually make a lasting peace possible. The Democratic Party platform is still dramatically more anti-Israel than its past platforms. And yesterday’s fiasco was only the start of the problem.

It's so weird - Obama's view of leadership.

It's telling a story.

It's persuading.

And, it's telling that he went to Spielberg for help.

It's not about leading. It's about being an actor: lying straight to your face with some irrelevant and distracting story, but making sure you've got the right tenor or pitch or tone.

Nothing in there speaks truth, or compassion, which are his goals.

Nothing in there speaks to leadership.

I used to work at Labor. Let me tell you, that's not a "hopeful" signal. "Hopeful" is pure spin. Right now in the Frances Perkins building there are people saying, "We are so screwed. 109 I was reading the excerpts last night and what struck me was how Obama really does see everyone as a caricature. He made a comment about Boehner to the effect that he was just like the Republican state senators in Illinois. Look, I'm not particularly Boehner's biggest fan, but it does take some political skill to become Speaker of the House. The assumption that Boehner was just another cigarette smoking, cocktail drinking good old country club boy is telling. It's utterly dismissive of the idea that Boehner may have political skills of his own.

I did really really really love that Boehner was smoking in front of the President. I have to say that I would have everyone in the room start smoking and be sure to blow the smoke in the SCOAMT's direction. But then again, I'm petty like that.

And, then there's that tricky illegal alien and fraudulent vote (no matter what the naysayers say - it's clear certain folks would not have won without fraud - see Al Franken). There's a huge list, that keeps growing of fraud across the nation during the Obama/McCain race. I know Romney's campaign and pals are fighting this, this round, but there is only so much you can do. District by district.

When Boehner finally did call back, he jettisoned the entire deal. Obama
lost his famous cool, according to Woodward, with a "flash of pure
fury" coming from the president; one staffer in the room said Obama
gripped the phone so tightly he thought he would break it.

"He was spewing coals," Boehner told Woodward, in what is described as a borderline "presidential tirade."
"He was pissed…. He wasn't going to get a damn dime more out of me. He knew how far out on a limb I was. But he was hot

They found that yes, a majority of people who had a few sips of Pepsi preferred if over Coke. Coke came out with "New Coke" and it was an instant flop. They found that people who had a few sips of Pepsi found it sweet and refreshing, but when they tested people who drank a full can, they found it too sweet. People have had a full can of Obama, and they don't like the taste anymore.

When the president throws an angry tirade and your response is, "I think he's a nice guy", it enhances Obama and it denigrates Republicans. It establishes how the discourse between the groups will work - Democrats can be angry and irrational, Republicans must be respectful and compromising.
It's no wonder that the left was hoping a hurricane would kill all the people in the GOP even as they raged thatit was racist to claim Obama was from Chicago.
And I'm sorry, but we can't accept that. The country won't survive if half of it thinks they can abuse the other half.

For me...Clinton just went on and on and on...People I am a speaker and I can tell you if you cannot get your point across in 10 minutes tops 15 you lose the audience. The convention audience after 30 minutes even looked glassy eyed. But Clinton went 48 minutes....he saved he WEAK defense of Obama until after the 30 minute mark. I guarantee you people left that speech or changed channels. You cannot just talk no matter who you are. Clinton's body language was also a turn off...POINTING FINGERS and waving the head gets old and defensive. Bill last time was "I DID NOT HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMAN"...people still remember him pointing the finger then and then FOUND OUT HE LIED!!

Do not underestimate memory!! Bill Clinton basically also said...SEE HOW I GOVERNED...OBAMA IS THE OPPOSITE...but then Bill said he supported Obama?? Totally unbelievable. And for Bill to say...No one could have done better after what they inherited??? Sorry Bill a 4 year try out does not pass muster with people. 2 years yes....4 years NO!! The problem for Bill is this...look around....people are MORE pessimisstic about the Economy now!! Price of Gas is approaching 4.00...8.3 percent unemployment for 4 years....15 percent IS THE REAL NUMBER...home prices have no rebounded, food prices are way up...the deficit continues to climb and Bill thinks waving a finger and saying that BS will convince people?

Bill is a great speaker...but HE KNEW he went on for way too long and he deliberately waited until the end to talk about Obama. To pundits and people in the hall that is okay...to an audience at home with the ability to change channels or say GOD DOES HE EVER SHUT UP...that does not WORK!!

Biggest Winner Last Night: NFL GAME between Giants and Cowboys!! Men were there left and right and many women just got bored!!

10-15 minutes TOPS....Bill....that speech should have ended over 20 minutes sooner....any speaker knows that and so did Bill!

232 BTW- why does he need congress to ok raising debt ceiling anyway when he could either EO or print

Well, if you're talking about him just taking lawless action (like that would be a surprise), there's no reason except optics- and even Barky is at least vaguely aware of optics.

If you're talking about actual checks on that power- the debt ceiling is created by legislative action so he has no authority over it, and printing money just gives more money to the Fed, who still has to find a way to distribute that money and get it back to the government. Which is where QE3 (or are we on 4 or 5 now?) would come in.

310 The bullshit polls we're seeing are being weighted to unrealistic party
ID numbers. If/when they are brought into line, your outlook on the
coming landslide will brighten.
===========
No. They won't. Every single poll until Election Day will show Obama winning or less than 3 points behind.

You know how we all keep telling each other that the polling firms are sure to tighten up their models in the weeks before the election? You know, to save their credibility and not be embarrassed in November?

Not going to happen.

You're Charlie taking one more run at the football if you think that. Have you forgotten all the jaw-dropping things the media has already done in defense of the JEF? You think they care about their credibility? It's about power. They intend to keep it and it doesn't matter how many lies they tell, they believe they can force you back into believing them. After they win.

But, if they lose? They are not even thinking about that--no one who believes they are on a moral crusade ever thinks about losing. We are dealing with people who think government--GOVERNMENT!--can perfect man here on Earth. Not even God Himself claimed He could do that. But the left? The left believes they are better than God, that they will perfect man here, now. Just give them the power to do their good.

So no, they are not interested in what you think of them, your outdated notions of truth, fairness, honesty, humility, virtue, etc. They are only interested in having control over you.

322 I heard Rush talk this week about some NYT article that talked about how
Sotero just has to be the "best" at everything - from doodling to
bowling.

The bowling thing struck me because the article said he beat everyone at it in some riduculous nativity (his own) olympics.

Like Nero. Nero was very similar, participating in the games, playing music for people, whether they liked it or not, etc.

Early on in his reign I remembered articles about how he sucked at
bowling (like <100 in a game sucked). So evidently he spent more
hours at the lanes in the White House basement practicing that he has on
the golf course.

Or...maybe they let him win.

Sure, it's possible that he practices day and night and no doubt that he's better than he used to be, but isn't it more likely that they let him win?

If you worked for Obama, wouldn't you let him win?

They all let Nero win.

"whatever, I've seen the guy play Euchre with DeWine, Dave Hobson, and another player and win a lot...."
And I've watched him pledge to cut 100 billion from the 2010 budget and cave for a several billion dollar increase, as one of many failures in his tenure. He's a shitty negotiator who focuses on procedural victories rather than actual results and sets his starting position too low. 326 "coax to compromise" hoax Obama, attacking Tea Party Constitutionalists as "radicals" requiring DHS surveillance and worse by thugs.gov and SWATting.

A clip by Quin Hillyer from The American Spectator archive:
June 25, 2010

All of that digression leads us back around to Goldwater
and the exclusive essay he did for my father's "Liberator" in
April 1961, expressing confidence in a "rapidly approaching
period of vigorous conservatism in American political thinking."
It features an entire subsection titled with an odd-sounding (to
today's ears) phrase, "The Whole Man." I had heard Goldwater use
this phrase elsewhere on video, in the opening sentence of his
1964 GOP nomination acceptance speech at San Francisco's Cow
Palace. He also used the phrase several other times in that
speech, but never explained it, not even really in context, so
that it sounded almost like an affectation. But there in
"Liberator," three years earlier, Goldwater explained what he
meant.
[All emphases are
Goldwater's own.]

Conservatives are interested in the whole man, while the
radical-liberals confine their interest to the material side of
his nature. Conservatives believe that man is in part an
economic and animal creature, but that he is also a spiritual
creature with spiritual needs and spiritual desires.… The
conservative respects the individuality of man, realizing that
man's spiritual and material development is not something that
can be directed by outside forces. Every man, for his
individual good and the good of his society, is responsible for
his own development. The choices that govern his life are
choices that he, not a super-state, must make. And these are
choices that must involve the whole man, if they are to be the right choices. If life
were concerned only with material things, as the Liberal
approach indicates, then I suppose the conduct of some men
might be justified. The materialistic philosophies of Marx and
Engels, which call for the suppression of the individual and
glorify the collective, are only acceptable to people who deny
the possibility of a more significant explanation for man's
existence….

The Liberals, with their emphasis on collectivism and
conformity, and their willingness to use compulsion to achieve
their ends, are actually suggesting a course of action which
thoughtful men have rejected throughout history. The reason man
must be treated as an individual is because he has an
individual immortal soul. Thus, his freedom comes from
God -- as do all of his rights. In the scheme of things,
government's only proper role is in the protection of man's
God-given freedoms and rights.

The conservative recognizes that the concentration of
power in the hands of the few has always been the undoing of
those who aspired to the fruits of freedom. Aware of the
overbearing evidence of history as to the truth of this
postulate, the conservative is fearful of the concentration of
power which accompanies central government.

And then, with high relevance today, this: "I am convinced
that most Americans now want to reverse the trend. I think that
concern for our vanishing freedoms is genuine. I think that the
people's uneasiness in the stifling omnipresence of government
has turned into something approaching alarm…."

If this doesn't sound like an erudite explanation of the
roots of the TEA Party phenomenon, you're not paying attention.
If Goldwater's warnings don't sound like today's concerns about
the Obamites, you're not listening. If the late Arizona senator
and today's Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina (for one example)
do not look like philosophical twins, your eyesight clearly has
grown dim. (As an aside: It is too bad the current senior senator
from Arizona, John McCain, understands all this no better than a
rooster comprehends Aquinas. One can always hope that his primary
threat from J.D. Hayworth can make McCain learn.)

Goldwater's ideals stem from classic, limited-government,
libertarian-leaning wisdom. They are ideals that echo today in
the well-expressed beliefs of Ohio's Joe the Plumber, and of the
furniture refinisher in Spanish Fort, Alabama, and of the Sarah
Palin-admiring young mother in Pocatello, Idaho. These people's
concern for vanishing freedoms is genuine. Their uneasiness about
stiflingly omnipresent government approaches alarm. And they are
absolutely right to feel that way.

But note what Goldwater said about "the whole man." Note
that the concerns are not merely economic or material. Note that
both the roots and the fruits of conservatism are spiritual as
well. And note that the spiritual and material parts of
conservatism are not an "either/or" proposition, but a
"both/and." They are necessarily so. They are not two separate
features grafted into a coalition, but naturally part and parcel
of each other and mutually dependent on each other as
complementary features of a single whole.

338 This one paragraph tells me everything you need to know about the state of "bipartisanship" in DC ...

The book points out that the administration seemed unprepared for the road ahead, as demonstrated on election night in 2010. “Protocol dictated that the president make a congratulatory call to Boehner,” Woodward writes. “The trouble was, nobody in the White House had thought to get a phone number.”

Simply, there is none.

Two years into Obama's term as President and the White House didn't have the phone number of the House Minority Leader.

345 No. They won't. Every single poll until Election Day will show Obama winning or less than 3 points behind.

Not every poll, but most will. They'll make sure that RCP average is +1 Obama.

Here's the funny thing: Thursday, Obama makes his big speech, major political and newsmaking moment, lots of people paying attention. Friday, UE numbers come out for August.

Note that the morning reports on Obama's speech will be intermingled with the UE report. Sure, there will be spin, etc., "hopeful signs" and all that but people will be focused on them.

I don't really see anything improving impressively, but who knows? Frankly, I think they've been doing too many accounting tricks already with revised numbers. If it goes down 0.2 points (8.1%) it won't be bad for him. If it ticks down to 8.2% or stays at 8.3%, it will not be good. It'll just feed the malaise. If it ticks up by even 0.1%, it will be a nightmare for him.

The FBI cleared a US Airways flight to Dallas that returned to Philadelphia International Airport after what airport officials said was a "law enforcement situation."

Philadelphia airport spokeswoman Victoria Lupica said US Airways Flight 1267 returned to the airport Thursday morning as a "precaution."

The Transportation Security Administration said in a statement that there was a report of a suspicious item on board and the plane was taken to a remote area of the airport out of an abundance of caution.

Police, the bomb squad and federal agents reportedly descended on the airport after an anonymous tip of a suspicious man on board a US Airways flight just landed on the tarmac.

Footage from WCAU-TV showed a person being escorted off the plane by law enforcement officials and police dogs on the tarmac.

The last pre-DNC poll.

One of the things that I've noticed is the huge uptick in the number of people who think Romney will win. That's also part of the preference cascade.

I don't see how the DNC gives Obama a bounce. It's been a disaster although they've had a decent final speaker each night.

378 In a perfect world, the teleprompter would malfunction, and the JEF would have to adlib it, accidentally telling everyone exactly what he thinks. Any time he is off script it is most revealing - "you didn't build that", "bitterly clinging to their guns and religion", "energy prices will necessarily sky-rocket", "after my election, I will have more flexibility", and "we need to spread your income around". Do we know anybody working at the DNC? Dirty tricks anyone?
Posted by: thunderb at September 06, 2012 11:20 AM (Dnbau)

I don't think we have to hope the teleprompter will malfunction. I think Bammy is going to be so steamed about having to shrink the size of the venue that his ego will get the best of him. He'll go off script at some point to start telling off his followers about their lack of determination and support. It'll be another "take off your house slippers and quit yer bitchin'" moment. I can almost guarantee it.

382 Two months ago Obama made a bet with the devil. “I bet that I can make a convention night where all the high profile speakers, including the chair of my own party, are absolutely shameless liars.” Bad news. The devil lost the bet.

The keynote speaker was Bill Clinton, who is known for two things. One of them is becoming the first president to be impeached in the court of public opinion after blatantly lying to the public on camera.

Before him there was Elizabeth Warren, known for two things, “You didn’t build that” and lying about being a Cherokee. Then there was Sandra Fluke, famous for two things, being called a slut by Rush Limbaugh and lying about birth control.

All three high profile speakers who got the most publicity for Night 2 of the convention were known and confirmed liars who got into trouble for being lying liars. It’s hard to think of three worse people to convince a nation of the credibility of the Democratic Party.

His problem is he's an arrogant commie asshole with delusions of grandeur who can't even put aside his ideology long enough to try and govern. I guess we can be thankful for that because it's finally shown fully what the Democrat party stands for. With Clinton it was all about him and his legacy so he was willing to put aside some of his aspirations for a socialist country in favor of being liked and re-elected and the Republicans were glad to oblige him by pushing him right. The false bubble producing a good economy didn't hurt.

After that, lying was easy for me. I lied about my age and joined the army. I was thirteen at the time. Yeah.. I went to Vietnam, and I was injured catching a mortar shell in my teeth. And they made me a three-star general! And then I got a job in journalism, writing for the National Enquire.. er, Geographic! Yeah.. I was making twenty thousand a ye.. month! In fact, I won the Pulitzer Prize that year! Yeah, that's the ticket.

And then my cousin died - Joe Louis - and I took it hard. Maybe too hard - I tried to kill myself. Yeahh.. I did kill myself! Sure! I was medically dead for a week and a half! It was a woman that brought me out of it - Indira Gandhi! Yeah, right.. And she told me about Pathological Liars Anonymous.

Oh, you'd be surprised how many famous people belong. In fact.. at one of the meetings I met my wife - Morgan Fairchild! Yes, I'm a change man now, and all because of Pathological Liars Anonymous. Why, I - I even have my picture on the cover of Newsweek magazine. Yeah. Every day! Yeah.. that's the ticket! Yeah, you betcha!

443 SEATO? After the PRC used the debt lever against the US last year on selling 66 brand new F-16s to Taiwan? The deal fell through so Taiwan is having to adapt while 16,000 Americans got kicked. Japan is having constant incursions of its territorial waters by PRC 'fishing boats,' one such boat opened fire on the Japanese. Vietnam went into hock with Russia for diesel-electric subs and jets. Philippines restarted its air force. Everyone in that corner of the world knows the dragon is restless and acting accordingly.

446 The point being missed here is that "confidence" and "narcissism" are not the same thing. The latter is really what's going on here, and the "Presidential tirade" is aninstance of what's called "narcissistic rage". That might be child's play compared to what this guy will be like when he loses in November.

SEATO, yes China has a lever with us but we can always threaten them using Russia's toolbox of "screw you we won't pay" we are already using perpetual motion money machine economics....

You're right there's an opportunity over there to create a lot of new partners who should have been allied to us for a long time but we have to have the balls to play or quit.

452 I visualized a political cartoon right after Pres. Obama was elected:

Pres. Bush, alone in the room, arrow to him saying "Smartest man in the room"

Next panel, him surrounded by his advisors, no arrow.

Next panel, Pres. Obama alone in the room, arrow to him saying "Smartest man in the room"

Next panel, him surrounded by his advisors, another arrow "STILL the Smartest man in the room"

This is how he sees himself, and since he surrounds himself with people who know better, but can't get through to him, I figured this would be true. Too bad it is.

443 Would that it were only the dragon that's restless.

Even the exploitative Teddy spoke softly while carrying his big stick.

Hillary needed to save face while skipping the Convention. She was never known as a gracious lady, so she goes to Asia to cause unnecessary waves, begging for trouble. It's all about her, ask Bill. /oops/

sven,
There is no point in bribing allies with US tax dollars. Either they prefer working with Americans or they really don't putting "good" money after bad. And those global corporations that used to be "American Industry" do NOT DESERVE our tax dollars invested in their foreign profiteering with no return to the US taxpayer except MORE DEBT. Those same global industries do not deserve US tax funded US Military used to destroy sovereign nations to build globalist [not American] foreign profits at the cost of human rights, all in the name of human rights.

After WWII during the US tax funded rebuilding of Europe and Japan, we were told it was our duty not only to be "compassionate" but to show the world how to be like us. And every POTUS since has kept up that ruse, as if other countries all want to be just like America (warts and all), for their own good, whether they want to or not. The Ugly American, 1958, by Burdick and Lederer. At this point, American foreign policy is as Obama/Clinton make it; even as our domestic sovereign status is no longer recognized by the administration (or foreign powers). Bush/Rumsfeld cut back the US Military to only be able to fight two simultaneous fronts, sending them to the never ending war in the Middle East so that they wouldn't have to fight foreign enemies at home. Obama inflated that double edged Middle East war to the entire Middle East, which once Syria is destroyed, China and Russia will respond.

Since Romney is FOR those same wars as Obama is, the zeitgeist is global destruction. Not what I'm voting "for". Neither am I voting "for" the Federal Reserve bailing out foreign investment corporations and the EU. I'm not falling for the wimpy line, "I'm not writing Europe any checks." That's insulting to our intelligence, Mitt. Those who scoff the dire need to legally/rightfully AUDIT the Federal Reserve or any financial institution can drop dead so far as US taxpayers' concerns go.

While we snark the Democratic weasel platform, the GOP is on shaky ground.

food for thought, or lunch...

"Prediction: Tonight's Bambi speech will be full of vague sunny platitudes and totally upward looking, with the occasional jab at his
opposition."

I disagree. Romney and Ryan have been planting darts in the JEF's hide, like a couple of picadors toying with a bull. The JEF is angry. Like most people, anger makes him stupid (OK, stupider): he wants revenge, he wants to *hurt* those *evil* men who have been tormenting him, so he'll be throwing haymakers.

With any luck, he'll toss out another gem or two to match "You didn't build that".

Apologies - had to skip a lot of the comments to have time to get this in before heading out - but sven, your take on Boehner, political tactics, and the budget (discretionary vs. "entitlement") is one of the biggest reasons we are where we are, as a country.

The entitlements time bomb is real, but has been under construction and ticking for some time (Dubya was one of the worst offenders, with Part D).

But the discretionary insanity is real, and important, and almost entirely new (well, it's dimensions are new).

And trimming around the edges, and stipulating the illiterate insanity that has helped get us here (moderation in huge unsustainable increases in spending is "cutting", taking revenue from already-high levels as % of GDP to levels that are known to suppress growth and thus revenues in turn is "a balanced approach"). It's the political collapse of the US writ small: the GOP lacks guts and adult responsibility, as well as wits (they simply stipulate an increasingly hallucinogenic false reality on many key issues, then "negotiate" from there).

To even contemplate ANY "revenue increases" on top of the already unsustainably high tax burden on the country is idiotic and irresponsible, period, end of story. To lack the guts and brains to do anything to educate more of the electorate as to these facts is beyond irresponsible.

The federal budget - both discretionary and non - WERE the hills to die on in the last few years. Except the dying would be by the Dems. As 2010 showed, clearly.

You are clearly NOT the problem with the GOP, or the country (on the contrary!) - but your tactical and substantive takes are really perfect for another era, say the 90s (even earlier). The budget disaster - and the political landscape - are nothing like during the Gingrich years.

And sorry, but the indictment of Boehner on political cowardice and general mediocrity has many pages of counts to it, far beyond just the (key, catastrophic) fiscal failure.

And then there's the "deal" that was done. Sequestration. Half from 050 (defense). You have to be fucking kidding me. This collapse by the GOP in the last budget "crisis" is, arguably, the most irresponsible and inexcusable act of the GOP in a generation or two. Simply unbelievable.

When agency budgets are DOUBLING in one budget cycle (not seen outside of WWII or post-9/11 emergencies), "stimulus" insanity is at levels equaling the whole federal budget just a few cycles back, and the tax burden (nominal, not short-term receipts driven by an economic down-cycle) is at or above damaging levels, it's not business-as-usual. Business-as-usual marginal mediocre politicking isn't just inadequate, it's near criminal.

465 "Ill served by his team? I have no doubt he considers himself a great negotiator as well."

Fuehrerprinzip.
