The Obama Discount: GDP On Sale

Lies, damned lies and statistics. You'll hear a lot of them this week at the Democrat Obama convention.

When it comes to the economy, 42+ months of 8+% unemployment should speak for itself, but the Dems still try to spin it as some sort of victory. When you've lost the "fact checkers", though, maybe you need a new spin.

Given that job growth is a byproduct of a growing economy, the reason we're stuck in the doldrums is clear. Coblogger emeritus Geoff did the math so you don't have to.

Yes, folks, the economy had already started to turn around in the quarter before President Obama took office. The healing had begun before the Stimulus package, and before he started propping the economy up with huge deficit spending.

...

Team Obama consistently frames an argument that presumes GDP would have continued plummeting if not for the intervention of King Putt and his band of Keynesians. But that's ridiculous. There's an enormous base level of economic activity that was always going to be reached once the panic was over. Further, a recessionary contraction in GDP tends to overshoot the mark and then bounces back sharply to get back to the previous growth path.

As Geoff points out, Team Obama always whines about what they "inherited" from the previous administration, when in fact they inherited this bounce. They should've been off to the races.

But instead they smothered the bounce in its crib by making the ill-conceived "stimulus" a permanent part of the spending baseline, enacting a huge new entitlement, screwing over GM's bondholders, conducting an all-out war on energy production, etc., etc. ...

So now the U.S. trades at a discount.

This is the real Obama record on the economy, no matter what they say in Charlotte this week.

Also consider that with his huge increase in federal spending with $1T deficits funded by printing fiat money he has increased the federal portion of the GDP to about 40% by some estimates. Federal spending should not be in the GDP since it is circular spending unless it is "printed" and then it becomes circular because of inflation.

Hi, Nazi Apologist troll. Good to see you this morning.

Did you bother to go read Geoff's article? No, the economy had already hit the inflection point- that is, it was getting better. At the very least (and I think it was better than this, but the Math Witches here can explain better than I) it was getting better in that the pace of decline had already slowed.

Nice to see your grasp of economics is as sound as your understanding of the nazis. The recovery was over a 3 week period after stabilization took hold it was real and I observed it when I was teaching tax class, of course that was also when I accepted that McCain had lost and oddly enough it was the last time he suspended the campaign that the phase began. The economy is self-correcting genius and if the Fed would stop with the magic money devaluation machine and the Feds would put the spending down for 4 years we could have a hard price structure reset.

Every time they tap the steering wheel they are knocking equilibrium further and further amiss. Barack's a drunk driver at the wheel of the Regulatory beast. Buckle your seatbelt.

Really Crazy can't grasp that the economy is measured in bites and that the bottom of the floor is the recovery point. The problem that launched this whole mess was the willful misvaluation of risk ratios and had the markets been forced to face the music of their idiocy and take the hit from public trust they had rightfully earned risk would have been properly understood and weathered. The decision to bail them out with the massive pulse of funny money was a political one because the political class understood that when prosecuted for fiduciary misdeeds the answer the bankers would give was "the politicians and lawyers shook us down."

That's it nothing more complex at all this was the detonation of a housing bubble 30 years in the making that was started willfully.

The fact is Reality people....the thing that people forget most of all is Reality!! When Michelle plays the same speech from 2008 with this lofty BS and bologna and imitating Anne with MS about her father, that sounds all fine and dandy and the MSM loves it but that HUFF AND PUFF does not take away from Reality. The price of gas is approaching 4.00 everywhere, manfacturing down again, US slipped another 2 places in the world for business, JOBS NOWHERE, deficits, the price of food and energy through the roof...that is Reality...in 2008 those lofy speeches could deter from Reality...today they cannot....someone may say Michelle gave a good speech...but that same person knows IT WILL NOT PAY THE BILLS....yes the liberals will love...no surprise....but the economic reality is what your WALLET/PURSE and INCOME are lacking and costing.

Reality is Obama's biggest enemy this time. He had his FAKE REALITY and Michelle tried Space Time Travel last night to 2008 to try to DRUM UP THAT EMOTIONAL APPEAL....it will work with liberals....but not with others who voted for that in 2008 but 2012's Reality is very very different!! The biggest swooners the MSM which will support Obama no matter if God himself came....He is their Messiah....

The narrative of the MSM was and will be all week GREAT GREAT GREAT for DEMS....the problem is bills, costs, jobs, gas and energy keep kicking Americans everyday!! under Obama's 2012 Reality!

Oh! Speaking of which. On the threads last night, lots of folks were mentioning that Castro's speech was sampling a lot from Rubio's. Does anyone have any side by side comparisons of the two? Admittedly they're both sons of hispanic immigrants, so I'd expect their stories to be SOMEWHAT parallel, but I'd still be interested to see what there speeches look like in comparison.

Also, I mentioned this on the Headlines thread -- am I the only one totally offput by Castro's voice? I heard a snippet of his speech on the radio this morning and it made me cringe. I get the same feeling listening to his voice as I do listening to Gore speak -- my skin starts to crawl and I start picturing Innsmouth.

The Dems intend to inflict JEF clones on us for the next 10 years--they've completely eliminated any honest, patriotic and reasonable people from their bench.

I have several houses without for sale signs within a mile of me that have been abandoned. Out in the country. There is someone else selling 19 acres with frontage on a state highway. If you have all that cash and find a parcel that suits, with cash you could probably talk them into lowering the price. Cut out the mortgage fees and maybe the real estate agent fees.

118 CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Democrats are using one of
Barack Obama's strong suits, that voters believe he understands the
problems of ordinary people, to trump his weakest suit, the economy.
Michelle
Obama played those cards with force in a speech declaring that after
four years as president, her husband is still the man who drove a
rust-bucket on early dates, rescued a coffee table from the trash and
knows the struggles of everyday Americans because he lived them in full.
"I
have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are, it
reveals who you are," the first lady said to lusty cheers Tuesday night
in a deeply personal, yet unmistakably political testimonial
highlighting the Democratic National Convention's opening night.

That was the MFM lustily cheering her bullshit. And this doesn't mean that Barry was poor, it means that he's a cheap SOB if someone isn't giving to him or paying it for him

That question allows them to bring out all kinds of cooked-up economic bs that just glazes people over, thus deflating the impact of the question.Rather than asking "are you better off now than you were four years ago", which goes to economics, I think we would be better off asking "If (G*d forbid) Obama is reelected, what makes you think that the next four years will be any different from the last four years?". That question goes to LEADERSHIP, which is harder for the opposition to pettifog.

But Barry once drove a rusty car so everything is cool, comrades.

The news was greeted with a round of press releases from Barack Obama's Republican rivals,
who used the grim-but-expected news to criticize the president for the
government's fiscal performance over his 3 1/2 years in office. Obama
has presided over four straight years of trillion dollar-plus deficits

I'd contend that if we get beat by this unholy alliance of the DNC/NEA/and media it is time to start fighting an economic cold civil war on the ground of their choosing.

We're going to have to send political missions into the barrio and whip the white trash voter into knowledge that Barack Obama and the Socialists are thieves who are getting rich off of holding back those people from exerting the sale or renting of their economic being. It'll be a 40 year fight and we will have to put our money where our mouths are by taking over small colleges or opening up schools of our own. One of the hard things will be deciding whether domination or separation is the long term goal.

The big thing to me about all this is that they don't have any kind of reasonable answer to two questions:

1) What did Bush do to "cause this mess"? (Those same tax cuts that Obama extended?)

2) What did Obama actually do to allegedly save us from a greater disaster?

I don't know about this stuff about where the bottom of the bounce was, but the thing is that normally the economy strongly bounces back after an economic shock, and Obama stopped that through ObamaCare and other acts of economic terrorism. What we have is jobs growth that roughly tracks the expanding population, and GDP growth that would be lackluster even if we weren'ttryinga recovery- there's no "catching up".

I had one and only one, thank goodness, in college. Woke up the next morning all hungover, looked next to me...."shit." So I'm stumbling around and she asks if she can borrow shorts and a tshirt to wear back to the dorms. Because there's no way she can go back in what she had on the night before. I grumble and toss a shirt and shorts at her. I just want her out. I get dressed, load her up in the truck and head to class. My roommate is just barely able to keep from laughing his ass off while riding with us. It's like 1030, students everywhere, she hops out of the truck and heads into the dorms. My roommate dies laughing "Why the hell did you give her that shirt?" Me "Huh?" Roommate "Dude, you gave her one of our practice shirts. (we were both on the baseball team) You know, bright red, huge logo on the front, YOUR NUMBER ON THE BACK?" ................"Fuck. Me."

168 Um, sorry again but no mainstream economist defines a recovery as simply a decline slowing down slightly. There has to be actual growth for a legitimate recovery to be declared, which is why they pegged the recovery at June 2009.

This is no different than saying reducing the growth of government spending constitutes a "spending cut".

But the point everyone is missing is that we shouldn't be touting this "recovery" at all. Income is down, poverty is up, joblessness still huge. To the vast majority of Americans the recovery does not exist, so taking credit for it would actually be counter-productive.

180 Which is why I wish we could get off the old "are you better off today than you were four years ago?" question. That question allows them to bring out all kinds of cooked-up economic bs that just glazes people over, thus deflating the impact of the question.

I agree to a point, Nighthawk, but I can't agree all the way. WhenI hear, "Are you better off today than you were four years ago?" my mind doesn't solely focus on finances. Yes, I contemplate my anemic bank account, and my soul-sucking credit card and student loan debt, and the rising cost of fuel and groceries. But I think about other things, too, especially, "Do I feel as safe today as I felt four years ago?"

On an international scale, we have Iran gearing up and rattling its sabers louder than it's done in years. Afghanistan is a mess. Iraq is deteriorating again. Africa is turning into a hotbed of Islamic lunacy, and a lot of that -- especially el shabab -- is making its way back to this country. Russia is steadily returning to its totalitarian roots. China keeps flexing its muscles.

On the domestic front, the poor economy means more crime. And what happens if you legitimately injure or kill a criminal who was threatening you? What are the odds you'll end up charged with murder, ala Zimmerman, despite mountains of evidence that say otherwise? What can you do when political opponents camp out in front of your house, throw eggs at your car, threaten your children, SWAT your home? Will the DOJ come to your aid if you're threatened at the polls by a menacing thug with a nightstick? If an illegal immigrant with no driver's license or insurance, who doesn't even speak english, mows down a friend of mine with their unregistered car, will they be tried and imprisoned? Will they be deported? If you appeal to the Supreme Court for relief, will they deny you justice in favor of "fairness?"

Financially I'm anxious, and security-wise I'm even MORE anxious. So hell no I'm not better off that I was four years ago. Not by a long shot. And I don't believe I'm the only one who thinks like that when they hear that question.

What about why I called, the jump? Then it was oh your escrow went negative and that had to be refilled. So why did the escrow go negative? Oh uhm it seems your homeowner's insurance submitted paperwork twice and we cut two checks to them. This caused the escrow to go negative. You should have gotten a refund for the amount of the second check.

185 As damnable as Geoff's charts are, he didn't cover what's actually been propping up GDP growth the last 3.5 years--trillions in deficit spending.
As Karl Denninger's pointed out repeatedly, we've spent roughly 8-12% of GDP during that time frame ($1.2-1.8 trillion in a$15 trillion economy)to get a growth rate of 1-2% a year. Take away the deficit spending, and we actually have negative GDP growth--and this fact is further confirmed by the drop in the labor participation rate, which has continued unabated ever since the dotcom bubble popped.
"GDP" as it's currentlycalculatedis a misleading indicator because government spending is included in the equation--and deficit spending, in particular, needs to be taken outwhen it comes toany discussion regarding "real" growth, because it's simply a way to paper over a budget gap with phantom assets that have tobe paid off, or defaulted on, down the line.

Optimizer, GWB spent more than the US taxpayers provided, creating not merely his own administrations' record national debt but also creating the unconstitutional DHS bureaucracy that has proven the authoritarian threat destroying Liberty and decent expectations of home privacy that it's opponents argued to prevent. Meanwhile, Bush encouraged open US Borders (NAFTA and targeting concerned Americans in the Southwest as "vigilantes" for volunteering live info of illegal border crossings to the US Border Patrol) and failed to enforce immigration laws, augmenting tax subsidies to illegal aliens, ironically dumbing down "no child left behind" public education with more administrative paper work emphasis as if to cure poor performance from PARENTS, STUDENTS and teachers, linking "faith based initiative" to subjugation according to federal dictate dispensing propaganda and limiting free speech from the pulpit, not to mention the WMD bullshit that never panned out, opening the gates for Obama's mutilation of every non-monarchy Muslim nation to advance the House of Saud Wahhabi wannabe global Caliphate.

He didn't veto everything Nancy and Harry passed, he acquiesced to their spending whims to protect the operational funds for soldiers in the field.

Medicare Part D funding is also part of the problem, but I'm not sure how you can parse that out.

He also failed, during his six years of real power, to touch the looming crisis in SS, Medicare/Aid, debt financing. He didn't crush the EPA, reduce the bureaucracy, or address the regulatory monster.

Yes, but, she ain't no Reggie Love. Seriously, over the years, I have noticed the gay guys who marry for cover, children, to get their inheritance from their homophobic parents or whatever have two types of women they marry:1. The tomboy type who keeps her hair cut short, is muscular, and has virtually no bosom or hips. They look like a feminine teenage boy just hitting puberty.
2. The large, loud, muscular, angry, domineering type who looks like a Command Sergeant Major in a bad B movie about women in the military.
It is my humble opinion that because these two types of women are so masculine, the gays are able to "perform". Mooch is obviously one of the second types.

243 1) What did Bush do to "cause this mess"? (Those same tax cuts that Obama extended?)

Foreign Policy of Interventionist war as "Nation building" according to the "Karzai" BUSH Rules of Engagement called "suicidal" by every sane member of the US Military. Beginning never-ending interventionist Wars as if making the world "safe" through US exported terrorism. Continuing to redeploy our men and women in the military without concern for the psychological destruction in perpetual combat over his 8 years, providing them NO WAY HOME when he left office. Propagandizing Americans to think that if only we provide "democracy abroad" that everyone will love America as we "deserve" -- regardless of the suffering and bitterness that the hell of wars cause. There was no plan except to begin what will not end, as if "taking it over there" TO STAY FOREVER has solved anything, or has not caused worse problems for the USA than we already had, debt and a demoralized Military with the highest rate of suicide ever, much higher than Rumsfeld ever would have admitted possible.

That is how women over-think a problem. If a woman wants to attract a man, say "yes" once in a while. If a woman would say "yes", it doesn't matter if she is wearing a Hefty bag. Because she won't be wearing the bag for long. When her ankles are up by her ears, and all I'm looking at are the soles of her shoes, I honestly could care less WHAT they cost.

Posted by: rickb223 at September 05, 2012 10:40 AM (GFM2b)

245 Over the coming weeks, the Dems are going to trot out "authority figures" in a machine gun manner. They've telegraphed their intent to overwhelm with BS and move on before any chance at rebuttal or facts.

It's to be lies, more lies and even more lies all the time from here to election day.

And they have "experts" lined up to confirm each and every one.

That said, we are not going to have time to factually refute or attack them. Mock, laugh and discredit.

I don't know why Romney isn't attempting to overshadow the JEF's show. What's the worse that could happen? A press that hates him will hate him more? So? I don't see a downside.

That said: Paul Krugman wears his Noble Prize like a 40 year-old high school star wears his letterman's jacket every time he has sex 'cause he once nailed the head cheerleader after the big game while wearing it. Except now, he wears it sneaking into petting zoos looking for goats or sheep.

That feral cat Sandra Fluke will probably have her first litter in her 40s. I'm sure she'll abort the cross-eyed, mongoloid or half-breed ones so she isn't punished with a child like that.

The ancient hero's had to conquer death, that is, bring forth a life--their own--to become more like the gods. Only the gods (and women) have the power to bring forth life. The modern feminist has to kill the life she brings forth to become more like . . . a man. Only by destroying that which makes her more like the gods, can she become more like a man. The modern feminist is an anti-hero--the opposite of a true hero. And debases herself and the human race in the process.

The patriots who fought and won American Independence thought so.

Tell the damned Marxists that THEIR ideology is older than our Republic's. Furthermore, our Founders rejected Rousseau's socialist ideology, and refused to join with the blood thirsty French revolutionary socialists who assassinated their own Monarchy that sponsored our Independence from Britain. If ANYONE is stuck wearing the outmoded powdered wigs, it's socialists who refuse to admit that they simply want to murder everyone in order to have more for themselves.

264 I think i have this worked out.
GDP growth went from -8.9% annualized (Q4/0 to flat (-0.3% Q2/09) due to the polices of The One.

In the last six quarters we've averaged <2.0% annualized growth because of the BUSH legacy.
How can they both be true?
Did Bush leave behind some sort of time-delayed exploding trap that prevents The One from the same feats of might that he was capable of in 2009?
