Democrats' Platform: Really, You Didn't Build That, Unions Did
The Democrats’ convention platform endorses a slew of organized labor’s wishes and says unions “helped build the greatest middle class the world has ever known.” The platform, which was released Monday night, is a clear nod to labor unions. It endorses an increase to the minimum wage and strongly supports other labor laws, such as collective bargaining.The platform goes on to talk about all the things unions have done over the years.
Democrats believe that the right to organize and collectively bargain is a fundamental American value; every American should have a voice on the job and a chance to negotiate for a fair day’s pay after a hard day’s work. We will continue to fight for the right of all workers to organize and join a union. Unions helped build the greatest middle class the world has ever known. Their work resulted in the 40-hour workweek and weekends, paid leave and pensions, the minimum wage and health insurance, and Social Security and Medicare – the cornerstones of middle class security.Not included in that list? Actually creating a single damn job. Here's what the platform says about small business.
Small businesses employ half of all working Americans, and, over the last two decades, have created two out of three net new jobs. Democrats believe that small businesses are the engine of job growth in America. President Obama signed 18 small-business tax cuts to encourage with a tax credit to help pay for the cost of coverage. In 2014, the tax credit will grow and small businesses will be able to pool their purchasing power together to get affordable coverage. We recognize the importance of small business to women, people of color, tribes, and rural America and will work to help nurture entrepreneurship. President Obama and the Democratic Party are committed to continue cutting red tape for small businesses, helping them sell their goods around the world and access the capital they need to grow. This includes tax cuts for small businesses that make new investments, hire more workers, or increase wages.First, can we go without one section talking about sub-sets of Americans? I guess not. Note that small businesses owners didn't create the greatest middle-class ever, that honor belongs to unions and the government according Democrats. All the talk of tax cuts and "cutting red tape" is nice and all until you look at their real actions....proposing to raise taxes on many small business owners by allowing the "Bush" tax cuts to expire for people making $250K and up and a little thing known as "ObamaCare" which is a huge tax hike and regulatory mess for many small businesses. Note also the approach of Democrats to job creation....they'll give you a few hundred bucks in tax credits if you spend tens of thousands of dollars employing a new person. They actually think this is how the world works. I hate when people say "there's no difference between the parties". That can seem true at times (like when big spending bills come up) but at the grassroots level there's a huge difference. Look at the people the Democrats will trot out...losers demanding more free stuff, people who see themselves as helpless victims who can't get out of bed in the morning without a government program, people who'd rather drag others down than try and climb up themselves and the rich people who pretend to care about them. Contrast that with the mainly self-made people at the RNC who are proud of what they have created and people who admire them for their accomplishments and strive to be as successful as they are. That's the real difference between the parties and it's what's going to make this week insufferable to watch.

Barky's hometown (or not) schools are about to witness the first teachers' strike in 25 years. I can't tell if Mayor Rhambo is trying to push them out the door or if the teachers' union president (a female jabba the hut impersonator) is behind this.
Does Rhambo want to look tough and decisive as he sticks it to the teachers union? Or are the teachers just stupid enough to think the rest of the city country supports them? We shall see...........

An AP article responds thusly:
"Romney denies that his plan to help the economy and reduce federal deficits will result in higher taxes for the middle class. But he has yet to provide enough detail to refute the claim. Obama's assertion rests on a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center."

Obamacare hits them the hardest. A young person wanting to start his/her own business will be forced to purchase a high-end health insurance plan.. a plan which Obamacare dictates may not be cheaper than an older person's plan, even if that young person is healthy and never sees a doctor.
Oh yeah.. the Dems are all about helping entrepreneurs...

The Dems don't know how thefuck jobs are created and maintained, period. This is all about MONEY. The unions have been cutting off the moneystream to protest Obama's something or other (who the hell can keep track of the professional grievance mongers on the left?), and this is a blatant attempt to pander to them and turn on the money spigots again. Yet they release the platform while holding their convention in a frigging RIGHT TO WORK state. The irony, IT BURNS!

I think there's starting to be a difference on the macro level as well (the ag bill notwithstanding). The Republicans are at least paying lip service to the concept that we can't keep spending all of our future generations' money.
That being said, I can't believe that we're having an important election about the fundamental differences between the Republican and Democrat views of governance and Mitt F'n Romney is our only hope.
As an utter aside, I am waiting to do a big project but I can't do my part until The Boss does his part and he's working on his part and I have been reduced to doing my filing. Filing, people. This working at work thing sucks.

I had a weekend job at the hospital that was union one summer when I was 16. It started at 5 am and would take 2 hours to complete all assigned tasks. I would show up work for an hour then sleep for 3 hours and fart around to keep busy the rest of the 8 hour shift. I still got a note from the full time weekday guy that I was doing too much and making him look bad.

Ryan has been in North Carolina for two days. The GOP has a rapid response team there. The surrogates are on all of the talk shows. Ads are being previewed on You Tube. I assume some are running in swing states (I am in Indiana, so we don't get TV ads.)

In actual numbers, public employee union members outnumber private sector union members. In many govt offices, everybody is a member of the union, even the management.
Unions have not only destroyed individual companies, they have destroyed entire industries. The steel industry for example. The auto industry. Most manufacturing. That's why the US economy is now driven by consumer spending.
If anybody in the world is trying to live in the past, it's the democrats. They want to return to the 1950's with every ounce of their being. Tax rates of 90%, check. Unions making unsustainable wage and benefit demands, check.
But the demographics of the 1950's are not coming back. Democrats are clicking their heels together furiously and shouting "There's no place like the past! There's no place like the past!" But it ain't gonna happen.

btw, sunny-dee, check out the typical work week for the working class before organized labor. The right to strike was no right, either. Give credit where it's due. During the early 20th Century the working class used to labor 10-12 hour days, more often than not six days a week with every member of the family working -- whether farming or urban factory -- barely making ends meet. The mercantile factories where women and children worked were horrendous, as were the slave conditions in the mines and steel factories. Recall the "Gilded" era in America, the robber barons, trusts and monopolies.
That people take a good thing too far is the bane of our existence, back to VDH @ NRO.

OT I am here at a Hyundai dealer in SLC waiting on my underneath soundproofing to get installed. Fox News is on in the waiting room. When I go to Dennys.. you know whats on... Fox News. While outside of the occasional Red Eye I don't spend much time on Fox, I cant tell you how massively this is different from growing up in Chicago where only something like MSNBC or its diet cousin CNN would be on in any public place.

Unions have ruined the public sector, and it was never much good to begin with. It's virtually impossible to fire a bad government employee now without having to go through miles and miles of red tape. This is what leads to the "rubber rooms" and "round robins" for bad teachers who can't be fired but can't be in the classroom either. This is why the idiot behind the counter at the DMV can smack her gum and chat with the guy at the registration desk while you stand there turning purple with rage waiting for someone to take your license photo. This is why municipalities are going bankrupt, as they're forced to pay bloated pension packages on top of overpriced salaries and benefits for current employees, all thanks to "collective bargaining agreements."
And who does the bargaining? The unions and the politicians. Nowhere in that process is the TAXPAYER allowed at the table. You'd think the politicians who depend on the taxpayer for votes would stand up for their constituents - but you'd be wrong. Because the politicians are dependent on the UNIONS for their campaign coffers. So the taxpayer gets the shaft every. Single. TIME.
Unions are VERY MUCH a problem in this country right now.

A cop can flagrantly violate people's rights, and there is no punishment for him or accountability ever, because unions are fundementally against punishments for incompitence or rewards for merit. They operate on loyalty and seniority, those are the values being maximized.
Without accountability, bad cops are tolerated and protected, and our police forces become culturally corrupted.

Unions are shit. They know they're shit which is why they can't label their ideas correctly but, instead, have to use fake labels that describe things that they do not pursue. If 5 employees or potential employees choose to bargain as a unit, then fine. But they cannot impose anything on the company, only on themselves. If the company wants to bargain only with individuals, in individual contracts, then the 5 have to take their "business" of begging a producer for a wage somewhere else.
I don't know how the idea of a closed shop ever made it through our courts. It is un-Constitutional insanity writ large. The idea that this ridiculous notion ended up applying to government workers takes it past un-Constitutional insanity to the realm of purely depraved governmental savagery.

U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ruled in the case of Michelle Kosilek, who was born as a man but has received hormone treatments and lives as a woman in an all-male prison. Robert Kosilek was convicted of murder in the killing of his wife in 1990.
Wolf is believed to be the first federal judge to order prison officials to provide the surgery for a transgender inmate.
Kosilek first sued the Massachusetts Department of Correction 12 years ago. Two years later, Wolf ruled that Kosilek was entitled to treatment for gender-identity disorder, but stopped short of ordering surgery. Kosilek sued again in 2005, arguing that the surgery is a medical necessity.

In my world, murder and terrorism are a whole bunch worse than throwing away someone else's ballot. With the latter, there are simple remedies. With killing someone else, there is no way to bring that person or persons back, so that's when execution is appropriate.

She gets all the crap hours, and a tap on the shoulder if she gets too close to exceeding part time hours.

That was how things started (which never should have happened, but that's a whole other story) but that isn't how they've turned out. Not even close. I could tell you stories from my teaching days that would curl your toes.
Actually, the school I attended (when I was in
school) called an incomplete worse than an F. An F (unless you got a 0
GPA for the whole semester) would just get you scholastic probation. An I
could get you kicked from your program.

An incomplete can turn into a real grade without the incomplete counting on the GPA. A fail is always a fail, as it should be. I used to have students coming to me begging for incompletes so they didn't lose their funding - which they didn't deserve, to start with.

If you have 1000 registered voters, and you add 100 more names to the roles that are fictional, then you have a 10% increase in voters. If those names are fictional, then when someone tries to vote under one of those names, they either are allowed to, thus giving one candidate an illegal vote, or they are denied, in which case you sue.
