Paul Ryan and the Janesville GM Plant

You can file this under "liberals are so stupid" I guess, but last night Obama's campaign manager sent out an email that said of Paul Ryan,

He lied about Medicare. He lied about the Recovery Act. He lied about the deficit and debt. He even dishonestly attacked Barack Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin — a plant that closed in December 2008 under George W. Bush.

We all know the spin they put on Medicare and the spendulus, but let's talk about that GM plant. First, the "fact check":

The Janesville plant stopped production of SUVs in 2008 and was idled in 2009 after it completed production of medium-duty trucks.

So no, Messina, it closed in 2009. Furthermore, according to that JS piece, it has been sitting there idle waiting for the economy to recover, which is the exact point Paul Ryan was making, as you'll see when we roll the tape on Ryan's speech.

President Barack Obama, came to office during an economic crisis, as he has reminded us a time or two. Those are very tough days. And any fair measure of his record has to take that into account. My own state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it. Especially in Janesville where we were about to lose a major factory. A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that G.M. plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said, "I believe that if our government is there to support you, this plant will be here for another 100 years."

That's what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that's how it is in so many towns where the recovery that was promised is no where in sight. Right now, 23 million men and women are struggling to find work. 23 million people unemployed or underemployed. Nearly one in six Americans is in poverty. Millions of young Americans have graduated from college during the Obama presidency, ready to use their gifts and get moving in life. (emphasis added)

The plant is a symbol for the failure of Hope 'N' Change, and Messina knows just how powerful and easy to visualize the image of a closed plant is ... especially in Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio.

So he sent the Obama fanboys on a mission to quibble over the date it closed to distract attention from the fact that it still sits there shuttered, a victim of President Tee Time's failed policies like so many other parts of our economy after his flowery rhetoric of 2008 ran into the cold, hard wall of his incompetence.

Doc Zero has more on the saga of the Janesville plant.

On a related note, AC/DC fan Paul Ryan just released a summarized version of the Romney/Ryan budget:

Obama® Brand red ink sales hardest hit.

29 The plant suspended production while it waited for and hoped for an economic recovery. There were not enough orders coming in so they temporarily halted production. Obama took office. They waited, and they waited, and they waited. No recovery, no orders. GM bailout - didn't help the Janesville plant . So they closed their doors permanently, the same as they did here in Kenosha with the Chrysler plant.

Snipped:

Two other GM assembly plants in Spring Hill, Tenn. and Janesville, Wis.
were also under consideration to build the future small car. Spring Hill
will be placed in standby capacity status in Nov. 2009, as announced
earlier this month. The plant could be brought online at some point in
the future should GM require additional capacity due to increased market
demand. Janesville was placed on standby capacity in May 2009 and will
remain in that status.

Ok, what am I missing here. Bush economics had us at, what, 5%ish unemployment and that's what put this plant in a terrible position? No word on the building bankruptcy issues within GM because of UAW pensions, gold plated healthcare?

Indentured servants were used as risk labor more often than true slaves.

A slave is a lifetime investment indentured servants unless you broke the law were a finite rental.

The greatest guarantor of racial equality and social justice is

People let us ALSO REMEMBER OBAMA TOOK OVER GM in the bailout!! I mean Obama fired that CEO, put his own CEO and the wiped out white collar pensions, protected the union pensions, forced the closure of 1000s of dealerships and still owns 30 percent valued to taxpayers over 50 billion dollars.

Obama took over GM and he DID NOTHING to reopen that plant in Janesville!! How can anyone on the left have the nerve to say that Obama could do nothing. It closed in 2009...he had his stimulus, he had the Senate and House, he had taken over GM and he DID NOTHING to honor those words in 2008. The nerve for liberals to pitch a fit over the date....ARE YOU KIDDING??? One person said....GM is a capitalist company that made the decision to close the plant....DUH!! Obama was running GM and owned it as the head of the US Government...he fired the CEO, kept certain pensions and then you tell me he could not say...I PROMISED THE PLANT in JANESVILLE back in 2008 that I would keep it open and that is my order??? Who at GM could have said no???? GM is no free market company it is a crony capitalism story of the worse kind. In a capitalist market it should have gone through normal bankruptcy and gone from there. Obama ordered and changed that....he did not lift one finger to re-open that plant!

It is called Government Motors for a reason...we still own 30 percent of the company...Obama could get off his golf cart tomorrow and call the CEO andtell him to open that plant or he is gone!!

Obama lied in 2008 to get the vote and Ryan nailed him on it last night!

113 Ace said the election is over in the last post. I hope.

Someone smarter tham me check this out and tell me why it won't matter. The trend goes back to at least 1992:

Analysis: Lagging faith in Romney is GOP challenge

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mitt Romney may have a bigger problem than his low likability and favorability ratings. Even among voters who support him, many say he will lose to President Barack Obama.

Pollsters say that's a serious handicap that deserves more notice than it's receiving. Republican image-makers, focused on trying to make Romney seem warmer, might be wiser to try to make him more plausible — as a commander in chief and as a politician who can defeat a seasoned campaigner like Obama.

Americans like winners, pollsters say. The "who do you THINK will win" question has a strong — but certainly not infallible — track record of signaling where an election is going.

The numbers are startling. Poll after poll shows Obama and Romney roughly even when people are asked the "horse race" question: who do you support for president? But Romney trails Obama badly when the same people are asked: Who do you believe will win?

117 In the narrowest sense, they can say that Paul Ryan was not completely accurate, and parse every word and sentence that he said.

In the larger sense, Ryan was absolutely right about a great many things, and nothing that Obama's apologists in the Massive Bullshit Media can change that.

We are in economic trouble.
We have ridiculously high Federal budget deficits
We have too many people dependent on the Federal budget
The Obama Administration wants more people on the Federal payroll, by destroying private insurance companies, and getting Federal employees to do that job. More AFSCME and SEIU members. Magic. Democrat voters.
The 10 year reduction of 750 Billion from Medicare was a financial trick to get the OMB to score Obamacare better - less deficit making. Everybody winked that the Congress would go back and fix it (the "Doc fix"), yet there it stands. Obama, Pelosi and Reid are liars.
A lot of the structural problems with GM and Chrysler were not fixed after the bankruptcy, and will yet come back to screw up GM. Very shortly. The Obama Regime interference was an example of grotesque government over reach and the "takings" of the Senior Bond Holders was unconstitutional.

The whole Obama interference with GM and the following mismanagement of GM has been like dropping a bomb on a lot of GM factorytowns in Michigan and Ohio. I can't speak for Michigan, but there are a lot of people in Ohio that really hate Obama because of this. They may be GM/UAW workers, but they aren't complete imbeciles.

Different missions, different goals. Condi isn't running for anything and carried the weight of the Bush administration on her back at a time when people want to turn the page.

Her goal was to make people understand that a strong America is the key to world stability, American leadership is not just a good thing it is a necessary thing. And she did it a time when Americans are focused on domestic issues.

171 One reason the libs are going nuts over this Janesville thing is that the whole passage of Ryan's speech about it said tomiddle-class voters, "I get it. I get what you have been going through in this economy. I come from a place where a huge plant has closed and my friends lost their jobs." It was dynamite and the libs know it. And then his reminder of Candidate Unicorn's lofty promise to keep the plant open for 100 years was devastating. All the fact-checking going on today is going to lead a lot of people to read that speech of Obama's for the first time and remind them how much fairy dust he was selling in 2008.

I suspected some sort of violence against a Republican would be the story...that article reads like some sick fantasy of a commiecrat taking out his anger on a high profile GOP personality. You just know they wanted to use the top of the ticket, not McCain, but going their preferred route may have called the Secret Service down on them.

Anyone who is of a praying inclination, remember to keep GOP leaders in your intentions. Have you heard the story about the secret service guy leaving his firearm in the lavatory of the Romney plane? Suppose an unhinged moonbat reporter had gotten to it instead of the guy who found it, and turned it in to the flight crew?

I like to be in armed with facts before I blame the media, which is why I blame them so much. In this case, they cite August polling back to at least the 1992 election. A solid trend.

Fact: The plant is closed and has been closed for several years. Even if you want to debate the specific date the plant closed it is immaterial to the fact that the plant closed and has not reopened.

This leads to one of two conclusions. Either (A) Obama's government did not support and still does not support the plant, or (B) Obama's government was powerless to stop the closing and is powerless to reopen it.

213 For those of you who think Al Sharpy Sharpton only pulled the twana brawley heist:

On Friday, December 8, at 10:12 a.m., Roland James Smith, Jr., 51, a Harlem resident with a criminal record going back 30 years, walked into Freddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned clothing store at 272 West 125th Street, pulled out a gun, ordered all the black customers to leave, spilled paint thinner on several bins of clothing and set them on fire -- a fire that resulted in killing 8 people including Smith.
Smith had been part of a group of picketers, led by Al Sharpton , head of the National Action Network and Morris Powell , leader of the 125th Street Vendor's Association, who had been protesting the eviction of Sikhulu Shange, owner of the Record Shack who was subletting from Fred Harari, the Jewish owner of Freddy's.
The picketing, which had gone on for months, had led Harari to seek relief with the State Supreme Court. In papers filed just one day before the fire, he said, "Recently, the protesters have made motions of striking a match and throwing it on outside clothing displays or in the doorway of the store." An affidavit by Kareem Brunner, a black security guard killed in the blaze, said that he had been called a "cracker lover" and "would get mine as a traitor [to the black race]." Brunner, was the only black that Smith did not order out of the store before setting it afire.

I agree about poll reliability. I can use that as a fallback option to dismiss the AP article. This is the part that got my attention:

"A recent AP-GfK poll found Romney and Obama essentially tied on the question of who they would vote for if the election were held today. But 57 percent of voters say Obama will win in November, while 33 percent think he will lose."

The same poll that reflects the general consensous in the first question shows a huge disparity in the second. Weights and sampling bias can't explain away a 24-point gap. I'm not trying to be Davey Downer. I'm pumped. But want to keep my head on straight.

247 Yeah, but to whom. I believe that this is the year that the mask of objectivity is finally and forever ripped from the face of the so-called mainstream media. It's Commie-kaze election as far as the media is concerned.

Every time I see some poll result that shows teh SCOAMF tied or barely ahead, I remember all the other polls that show him in negative territory WRT his handling of the economy, the overwhelming 3-to-1 majority that thinks the country is on the wrong track, and all the others that show JEF losing badly to Mitt.

IMO, Charles K is spot-on when he says that polls are used to drive the MFM news, and are not a true reflection of public opinion. Far too many won't tell pollsters much over the phone, due to the suspicion factor. I don't blame them.

“When I was waiting tables, washing dishes, or mowing lawns for money, I never thought of myself as stuck in some station in life... I was on my own path, my own journey, an American journey where I could think for myself, decide for myself, define happiness for myself. That’s what we do in this country. That’s the American Dream. That’s freedom, and I’ll take it any day over the supervision and sanctimony of the central planners.” Paul Ryan 8-29-12 Convention

Ms. Walsh,

Ayn Rand did not invent the American Dream, American Rugged Individualism, or Self Determination. She was drawn to America because of them.

Those aspects unique to Ayn Rand were never Paul Ryan's "roots". Ryan promotes compassionate conservatism (Social Services) that Rand eschewed. And given his model, I doubt that Ryan's mother was a Rand fan, or that the Ryan family worshiped "Self" as Rand philosophized.

As in a second term (2) of four years (4) will equal zero (0) in terms of job creation, a surplus budget, respectibility, or any other measure of success for this country.

That was an awful line. I know it plays to the school choice crowd, but that's short-sighted. Once the good kids are able to move to another school (most likely in the same zip code) there will be plenty others left to fail. Or, the bad students just follow the good and make the choice school shitty.

Liberals would LOVE to blame zip code. More fuel for them take control of schools from communities (zip codes) and states and nationalize it. It's not zip codes, it's parents.

266 From factcheck.org:

It’s true that the plant didn’t last another year, as Ryan said. In fact, the Business Journal in Milwaukee wrote that the assembly plant shut down on Dec. 23, 2008, at the tail end of the Bush administration, a victim of the financial crisis and dwindling demand for the SUVs produced at the plant. That’s nearly one month before Obama was sworn into office.

About 100 workers were kept on in 2009 to finish a truck order and help shut down the plant, according to the Associated Press.

In short, you're being dishonest. Plus, you didn't even address the 4 other lies mentioned here: http://factcheck.org/2012/08/ryans-vp-spin/

269 Thanks Pablo, but that is irrelevant to what I was referencing.

Schwalbe, that has nothing to do with Paul Ryan's statement. The fact is, the decision to close the plant was made in December 2008, before President Obama could have possibly done anything about it.

Posted by: Jon at August 30, 2012 02:33 PM (P+jgw)

270 Furthermore, Schwalbe, how is it possible to lie about something that was predicted could happen in the future? That doesn't even make sense.

Posted by: Jon at August 30, 2012 02:37 PM (P+jgw)

271 Jon, you are forgetting another speech. He promised to re-tool the plant for more efficient vehicles as part of his green energy program. He got the bailout money AND he got his green energy funding.

Are you fucking retarded? He said it would REMAIN OPEN for 100 years. It is not open, even with the bailout and green energy funding, and 100 years has not passed, therefore A LIE.

Posted by: Schwalbe: The Me-262© at August 30, 2012 03:02 PM (UU0OF)

272 Ryan did not say Obama closed it retard. He just repeated that Obama said he would KEEP IT OPEN. It aint open.

273 Tell me a truth and I will prove it a lie.

Posted by: Vince at August 30, 2012 03:43 PM (pFT9P)

274 Sir, you are talking past me. Also, I would point out that I have been completely reasonable in my statements, yet you have resorted to name-calling, calling me 'retarded' twice now.

We are talking about Paul Ryan's statement. Not then-candidate Obama's statement. Paul Ryan's statement is that President Obama is responsible for the closing of that plant, yes? The decision to close the plant was made before he could have done anything. Those are the facts.

Allow me to provide you with an example for analogy.

Let's say a restaurant is about to close down, and I, running for Mayor, promise that I will get state funding to support the restaurant. (Bear with me, I know it's not realistic.) I get elected mayor in November, to take office in January. In December, the restaurant goes out of business. Was I lying when I said I would get state funding to support the restaurant? Because that is exactly what you are accusing President Obama of doing. He had *no power* to stop the plant from closing, as he was not yet in office.

I will tell you one thing, though. Had we not bailed out GM, massive amounts of people in Ohio and Michigan especially would be out of work, and our economy would be in the tank. But please, please, keep talking about how we shouldn't have bailed out GM. I'm sure Ohio and Michigan voters will appreciate that argument.

Posted by: Jon at August 30, 2012 04:45 PM (P+jgw)

275 You are wrong again from the gate. Paul Ryan DID NOT SAY Obama closed the plant. I'm talking past you because you keep assuming to be true something that is FALSE. Paul Ryan made no claims as to whose fault it closed, simply that Obama made a promise, and failed to complete the fucking promise. Read English?

Posted by: Schwalbe: The Me-262© at August 30, 2012 04:56 PM (UU0OF)

276 Your analogy fails also. The restaurant (GM) did not close down. It was bought with tax payer money, the CEO fired and replaced by an Obama stooge (Ratner) who had zero experience in the automobile industry. Kinda like Obama had zero executive experience.
But none of that matters because Ryan never said what you imagine he said.

Posted by: Schwalbe: The Me-262© at August 30, 2012 05:00 PM (UU0OF)

277 Actually, he didn't make a promise at all.
This is what he said:
Obama, Feb. 13, 2008: And I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years. The question is not whether a clean energy economy is in our future, it’s where it will thrive. I want it to thrive …

Ryan said this:
My own state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it, especially in Janesville, where we were about to lose a major factory.

A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: “I believe that if our government is there to support you, this plant will be here for another hundred years.” That’s what he said in 2008.

Well, as it turned out, that plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.

There's a big difference between 'believing' something and promising that it will happen. Ryan is suggesting that it is Obama's fault that the plant didn't last another year, not that he closed the plant personally, but rather that he was responsible for the plant closing, breaking his 'promise' that he didn't actually make.

Sorry, the analogy should have been that the restaurant was part of a chain, which was bailed out, but the individual restaurant fails. The point remains that President Obama *was not in office* when the decision was made to close the plant. Period.

Posted by: Jon at August 30, 2012 05:10 PM (P+jgw)

278 Also, an update on the factcheck.org story:
Update, Aug. 30: A Ryan spokesman argues that the GM plant technically remained on “standby” status, meaning it was possible that the company might resume production there. But as a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story noted nearly a year ago, “no one seems to be counting on that.”

So in other words, the plant was closed. Candidate Obama did not make any promise that it would remain open, and could not have done anything about it in any case.

Posted by: Jon at August 30, 2012 05:18 PM (P+jgw)

279 Um so the whole 'Ryan lied!!!!' is based on whether the words 'I believe' mean the same as a pinky-swear promise???????? That is weak ass shit for the whole American media to hang its hat on.

So lets recap: Ryan said in his speech that at the time of Obama's speech the workers knew the plant was in danger of closing. Obama made the promise BELIEVE that the plant would remain open for 100 years if they got G'vment help (which they did), and it finally closed.

Can you point me to Ryan's lie now? I forget.

Posted by: Schwalbe: The Me-262© at August 30, 2012 05:26 PM (UU0OF)

280 No, that's just one of 5 lies that factcheck.org found in the speech. Read the factcheck.org article again. They did a very good job of summarizing what was incorrect about what he said.

Let's look again at what Ryan said in this instance.

"A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: “I believe that if our government is there to support you, this plant will be here for another hundred years.” That’s what he said in 2008."

A slight misquote of President Obama, but true enough.

The problem comes here:
"Well, as it turned out, that plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight."

The plant didn't last another year and is empty. Both of those statements are true. What is not true is the *implication* that Ryan is making. The implication he is making is that President Obama let those people down somehow because he said he believed the plant would remain open and it did not. But that's simply not the case. President Obama had no control over whether that plant would close. There would be literally no point for Ryan to bring this up at all if not to criticize President Obama. Thus, it stands to reason that that is what he was attempting to do, which is also given credence by the presence of the "recovery" jab at the end. Therefore, it is clear he is accusing President Obama of being responsible for the closure of that plant, which is completely dishonest.

Posted by: Jon at August 30, 2012 05:41 PM (P+jgw)

281 Sorry, I don't see the lie in any of it.

You say Ryan implied something, well didn't Obama *imply* he had the power to keep it open for 100 yrs if they voted for him and he gave them got G'vt help? Like I said above, GM got the help, and it closed anyway. Obama fired the CEO and replaced him with his stooge. He had no say/power in the matter. Yeah, OK

Like I said, if all you have is he didn't Promise promise, that's weak shit, and you should be ashamed of trying to defend it. Question: Did you spend this much time on the timeline of the Romney caused cancer story? You know, like she had her own insurance when the guy got laid off?

Posted by: Schwalbe: The Me-262© at August 30, 2012 06:00 PM (UU0OF)

282 Let's ignore that. That is not the crux of the problem with Ryan's statement, and I did not intend to make it seem like it was. Ryan implied that Obama was responsible for the shuttering of the plant. That is false. You're repeating a bunch of information, but it doesn't really go to my argument. What the President did afterwards is not relevant here.

I will ask you two questions:
1) Do you honestly think that Mr. Obama believed he had the power to keep it open, when he was not even elected at that point?
2) Was President Obama responsible for the shuttering of the GM plant, as Ryan implied?

I think the answer to number 1 is clearly no. Mr. Obama did not believe that, and I'm sure he was very disappointed at the plant closure, but there's nothing he could've done. The answer to number 2 is also clearly no. Therefore, given that Mr. Ryan is implying he was responsible, Mr. Ryan's statement is false. That is what factcheck.org and numerous other reputable news organizations have found.

Your second paragraph is non sequitur.

I really encourage you to read the factcheck.org article and other news coverage. This is hardly just my opinion.

Posted by: Jon at August 30, 2012 06:45 PM (P+jgw)

283 Why should I read factcheck when they lead off with a falsehood. Ryan didn't blame Obama for the plant closing. Period. As to your 1) Obama certainly *implied* he could keep it open for 100 years if they voted for him.

Again, Ryan made no false statement. He simply stated facts. He didn't say Obama closed it. He said they were already worried it may close. He repeated Obama's 100 years claim. Then finished with the final fact. It closed. End of story. No lies. No distortion, no 'out of context.' All you are left with is 'there is a difference between a promise and a 'believes.' Weak ass shit. And factcheck, as well as you, knows it because you are both changing tunes. He may not have lied, but he IMPLIED.
