Confirmed? FoxNews Says a GOP Source Tells Them Clint Eastwood Is Indeed The Mystery Speaker

Dan Riehl caught this.

They don't seem very confident about it -- using question marks in "reporting" it -- but they do say:

One Republican source told FoxNews.com that Eastwood is indeed the mystery speaker, following an online report that claimed the actor is planning to travel to Tampa for the convention.

There is something else, too. This story has been out for almost 24 hours. There are no denials from the GOP or from Eastwood's people.

The GOP could be expected to avoid denial, maybe, even if it weren't true, in the hopes of stoking curiosity.

But Eastwood would not want to let a story about his embrace of a political party to ping-pong around the Internet if it weren't true. Someone in his camp should have knocked it down by now -- but I don't see any denials.

Actually, that's what makes Eastwood "A Thing," by Ace's definition, worthy of being a sooper seekrit mystery guest. Virtually everybody saw that as a thinly veiled Obama commercial- virtually everybody. Based on nothing whatsoever (pulled it out of my butt, in other words), I doubt that it's Clint. I can't remember him being that overtly political in the past (his own tenure as Mayor of Carmel notwithstanding), and old dogs rarely learn new tricks.

I can see him doing the INTRODUCTION to the mystery speaker though. Or maybe the narration to a live presentation of some sort (rather like a live version of what Robert Duvall did for the 2008 convention).

Then again, the tittering over his participation would be a GREAT misdirection to cover the identity of the actual mystery speaker.

36 It’s halftime. Both teams are in their locker room discussing what they can do to win this game in the second half. It’s halftime in America, too. People are out of work and they’re hurting. And they’re all wondering what they’re going to do to make a comeback. And we’re all scared, because this isn’t a game.
The people of Detroit know a little something about this. They almost lost everything. But we all pulled together, now Motor City is fighting again.
I’ve seen a lot of tough eras, a lot of downturns in my life. And, times when we didn’t understand each other. It seems like we’ve lost our heart at times. When the fog of division, discord, and blame made it hard to see what lies ahead.
But after those trials, we all rallied around what was right, and acted as one. Because that’s what we do. We find a way through tough times, and if we can’t find a way, then we’ll make one.
All that matters now is what’s ahead. How do we come from behind? How do we come together? And, how do we win?
Detroit’s showing us it can be done. And, what’s true about them is true about all of us.
This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines. Yeah, it’s halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin.

1) He's a "Somebody." An A-List Celebrity (to whom many other A-List Celebrities look up), who is well known to the general population. Well known in recent years for really groking history, and America's place in it.

2) He's not someone "reflexively conservative." He's well known to be very socially liberal (didn't one of his wives have like 3 abortions because he didn't want kids, yet?), and he made the "Half Time" ad which talked up the Auto bailout and, specifically, talked up the GM takeover. He's not someone you'd look at and say, "Yeah, I'm sure he votes Republican every 4 years anyway."

84 Like I mentioned yesterday, Clint is gold-plated Hollywood. He's blacklist-proof. The Hollywood establishment can piss and moan about him being a Republican, but the fact of the matter is they owe a shitload of thanks to Dirty Harry, Blondie, Josey Wales, and every other character and film that Clint Eastwood has made a global touchstone. George Clooney can hold all the fundraisers he wants for his beloved Preezy, but has a single George Clooney role had a quote as memorable as, "Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" Clint Eastwood is a big part of what made Hollywood what it is today in terms of a worldwide powerhouse.

If he IS tonight's mystery speaker, or even if he's just there to make a brief statement of support, it goes a long way toward digging a hole through that insufferable regressive cocoon that surrounds Hollywood and the entertainment industry, and gives a little breathing room to other entertainers who might not believe that Bammy is the second coming of Christ.

108 Chris Matthews and MSNBC Now Claim the Word ‘Chicago’ Is Racist

http://bit.ly/PzKDpK

I think that I shall never miss
A man as racist as is Chris.

A Chris whose thirsty mouth doth dream
To suck Jim bourbon’s flowing Beam;

A Chris that looks at news all day,
To find a racist he may slay;

A Chris that may in weather find
Hurricanes of Jim Crow kind;

Within whose eye the rounded calms
Look like a noose for lynching Toms.

Racists are dreamed by fools like this,
But only booze can make a Chris.

114 The Super Bowl ad was not an Obama ad, it was an American ad.

Last election, Clint supported and said he voted for McCain. After Obama won, Clint said he wished him well because he was the President and everyone should hope the President does well so we all do well. Clint is not a hyper partisan and never claimed to be but nobody could ever claim he isn't a huge supporter of America.

But its clear to him that Obama has not done well and he said so in a fundraiser he held for Romney a couple months ago. And now its time for a change.

His very presence on the stage will speak volumes but if he looks into the camera and says, Mr. President, a man has got to know his limitations, my wood will petrify.

119 >>>>84 Like I mentioned yesterday, Clint is gold-plated Hollywood.

Clint transcends 'movie star' and goes straight into 'cultural icon' territory. That's why this is a big deal. Also, everyone knows Clooney, Penn, et al are big government supporting limousine liberals. Clint's lack of political involvement over the years, and the fact that he's showing his cards NOW, make it even more important.

282 Wait, Blowout wasn't DePalma's homage to Rear Window.

I forget the name of that one. It also riffed on Vertigo.

But Blowout did have a nice shower scene with Nancy Allen, I think. And Travolta was a sound effects guy. It ends with him presenting a scream he recorded of Nancy Allen actually dying.

They are given over to a lot of racism of course, like we've seen over the last few days, years really, but all through the Convention - and I didn't notice this at first - but all through it there's been a thread that just bothered me - "

Is it your goal to drive every single white voter from the DemocratParty, Chris?Because, for the GOP to survive, minorities have to be more open to joining it, or white Democrats have to keep shifting over. Because I don't think most white Democrats agree with you. I think they think the GOP has some valid points, and don't like being told that they'reracist thoughts.

295 #279 By all accounts, Tampa is an armed camp and the Occupoopers haven't been able to do anything they planned.

I sure hope there are some people scanning the hall tonight for any more of the Code Pinkos though. Yup. A nice twist. Otherwise, it was kind of junk food for conspiracy buffs. (John Lithgow was the bad guy.) One of the earliest scenes depicts a prostitute servicing a guy in a bathroom stall. I was 16 when it came out.

314 108 Chris Matthews and MSNBC Now Claim the Word ‘Chicago’ Is Racist

Chicago itself is the most rigidly segregated city I've ever been to; far more so than any southern city I've visited. But I doubt that that's what Tingles is referring to.

And the only region besides Chicago in which I've experienced overt racism? That would be Northern California. Example: got called the n word while wearing the uniform (USAF old-school fatigues). In Monterey.

Just remember that Eastwood is a private citizen...and probably dosn't maintain a staff of peeps to keep an eye on what's going on in conservative blogs.
Plus, I'd suspect that Eastwood doesn't spend a lot of time googling his own name...
iow, his 'camp' may not know about all of the speculation going on around here.

317 I'm not completely buying the Clint Eastwood as speaker story. If you want to keep a a secret, you put out a false story and don't deny it. Romney and Ryan kept the VP selection secret for ten days.
I don't see Clint endorsing Romney as that big a deal, certainly not .enough to keep it secret. What will he say? " Go ahead, Barack, make my day?"

I hope for something a little Wilder.

318 I was in first class on a flight from NYC to LA once, and Joan Van Ark hubby (I'm guessing) were across the plane from us. Once we were in teh air, I lighted up a cigarette and the stewardess promptly told me that I had to put it out, because although I was in teh smoking section (remember those?), a passenger (she nodded at van Ark) had requested no-smoking, which, since she had paid for a no-smoking seat but was unable to be seated in that section, gave her the right to declare whatever section she WAS in a no-smoking section.

After about an hour of me staring hatefully at her hubby, the hubby came over and apologized to me, telling me it was van Ark's publicist (or agent, I don't recall which) that had requested the ad hoc no-smoking section.

319 I also got into an argument with Bill Thornbury (Phantasm) once at a party. He was behind me telling some fools that it was the listener's responsibility to glean the relevant message from a speaker, so I turned around and told him he was WRONG! and that it was the speaker's responsibility to ensure his message was clear enough to be understood.

Now that I think about it, most of my encounters with celebrities (and maybe with just about everybody else...?) have been kinda confrontational.... Hmmmmm.

321 Dems just added Ellen Barkin to their list of speakers.
That should rebut the hell oiut of anything Eastwood has to say.

Barkin has a big supporting role in an upcoming 13-episode NBC sitcom as "Gay Main Character's Mom" (her character apparently has no name of her own). After that fails, she'll be flogging ceramic figurines on ShopNBC cable network. Then total obscurity. Sometime after that, she descends to an MSNBC prime time slot.
