| MSNBC Reacts To Romney Joke With Restraint, Equanimity"The basest and the most despicable bigotry we might be able to imagine." See, this is why I sort of think it's funny. It's a "secondary reaction" joke. The joke itself is lame. The humor comes from imagining the reaction of the thin-skinned Obama and his hyperprotective partisans in the press. Then, of course, seeing it. I think this is a type of clapper humor we see a lot from liberals, especially Bill Maher. His "jokes" aren't funny; but people laugh because they are anticipating an angry, upset reaction from the right. So, it's not a style of joke of high craftsmanship. But it is one that has long had a cherished place in the leftist toolbox. So game on.Comments1

If a Republican says something negative about Obama that is completely unrelated to race then that makes them a racist. Wow. I thought it was much baser and more bigoted when the late Robert Byrd as a young man wrote, "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... I kniw that pretty much everyone here believes that everyone else is Just Like Them and therefore will have no problem with the joke, but that's not living in the real world. In the real world, a media deeply hostile to the Republican Party will create a narrative of "Romney embracing birtherism". And this will be eaten up by the masses of uninformed undecided indies who get spoon-fed everything.
The only thing that matters is whether or not Romney's comments increase or decrease the chances of him getting elected. Romney himself is an expert in this given how he repeatedly misrepresented Romneycare in order to gain votes during the primaries. Anyone who thinks that making birther references is going to go over well is living in a bubble, period, end of story. Posted by: Reality Check at August 24, 2012 03:28 PM (hvzWz) 99

Apparently Biden putting on the Uncle Remus voice and telling a black audience that Romney is "gonna put y'all back in chains!" isn't "despicable bigotry." Who knew? Was
that birth certificate joke about Obama ? … or was it about his father, former Michigan Governor George Romney ? The campaign event was in Michigan afterall. Questions were occasionally asked about George Romney’s eligibility to run for President in 1968 due to his birth in Mexico, given the ambiguity in the United States Constitution over the phrase “natural-born citizen”. His Mormon paternal grandfather and his three wives had fled to Mexico in 1886, but none of them ever relinquished U.S. citizenship. Romney’s parents chose U.S. citizenship for their children, including George. The family fled Mexico and came to the United States in 1912 during the Mexican Revolution. It keeps Akin off of the national news (but now he's having a presser in :45) and the MSM/Obama campaign reaction is predictably off the charts. No biggie, right? Third: The hypocrisy (BC coffee mugs sold at Obama/Biden 2012's website) of the hysterics are hilarious. Racist? Yeah, that John McCain really suffered from some racist demands to release his BC. This was planned and focus-grouped. Romney knows exactly what he's doing and the American people just don't think that you should hide your birth certificate. They think it's weird. You know what the Romney campaign should do? Play a little Obama-style offense, by which I mean overload the soundbytes. The Obama admin has managed to keep all of its scandals out of the public view not only because of its utter subordination of the media, but also because of HOW MANY scandals there are, and HOW QUICKLY they've followed one after the other.
Tomorrow Romney should make a joke about Obama eating dog. On Sunday, he should mention the Chicago slums that Obama lorded over in his time in the Illinois legislature. I call my Mommy just now to see a. if we're still having dinner tonight (generally have dinner with the 'rents every Friday) and b. if a good family friend had passed away (he had a massive heart attack on Wednesday and collapsed and hit his head and had a brain injury from that). Mommy sounded exhausted and said no dinner due to that and their running around and going to the funeral today. Me "So he did pass then". Yup and she didn't tell me so I missed the funeral. head/desk head/desk head/desk This makes person number five that Mommy hasn't bothered to tell me has died until later. “I don’t even know what to do with that joke, it’s like a lasagna of metaphor. I don’t know what, it’s like so piled up, somebody, Adam Serwer at Mother Jones referred to at as ‘ironic post-birtherism,’ it’s like hipster racism basically,” Hayes surmised. “It’s like certainly weirdly nudging and winking at this thing that everyone knows is this kind of coded racial appeal.” Sweet Jesus but Chris Hayes speaks in word salad. Well, "hipster racism" is the thing you get when hipsters try to act like they're "in" with the minorities in their communities. Like they move to Harlem so they can say they're "down with the struggle" and such. Until they get punched in the face for being a weak-wristed little nancy boy, at which point they move back uptown to their mommy and daddy's brownstone. The difference between that and what Romney said is that the minorities -- usually blacks -- who are impacted by 'Hipster racism" generally can't stand the douchebags who do it, whereas we conservative wackaloons just love this stuff from Romney. Best case scenario: Akin announces he is withdrawing from the Senate race.
"Next best" best case scenario: Akin announces he is staying in the race, but will run as an Independent and is leaving the Republican Party over ideological differences. (that and the fact that they refuse to send him money and have told him he will not be caucusing with them and is not welcome at the convention.) Right. RC Obama's team is so perfect they never are caught off guard by anthing. We should just give up and go home now. Because they will run a perfect campaign and we will inevitably screw a few things up so that's that they win we lose. Over, kaput, pack it up horde. Cause I'm sure team Romney went willy nilly into a birther joke without considering what *might* happen. RC right now the media and the Obama campaign are having very predictable responses to that joke. In fact exactly how I'd think they respond. Take it from somebody who did it for a living. Maybe just for a brief moment, it allows them to smile, much in the same way Moochelle forces herself to smile in a hideously sardonic way. That's exactly what he's doing. And if you think that temper isn't a huge deal in a conflict like this than your as naive as you are claiming others are. Obama hurts himself the worst when he is angry. Once more he doesn't have good control over his temper and it comes through...often. He makes off the cuff remarks that help us and generally comes off as a condescending prick. A-la You didn't build that.
--------------------------------------------------------- It's actually trolling for the gaffe. And it will come either from the SCOAMT or little Joey. It serves a two-fold purpose. It exposes who these people are and it takes some of the pressure off from the Aiken debacle. Good strategy. Posted by: Soona at August 24, 2012 04:27 PM (Db8f9) 405
@402 My laughter is fueled by DWS' hair.
Their "humor" is fueled by any use of the word Fu$% or $h^&. In any context derogatory to Republicans, conservatives, gun-owners or people who actually admit to believing in God (other than Muslims). Posted by: RKinRoanoke at August 24, 2012 04:29 PM (DOEXI) 406

This is a presidential election, not a high school popularity contest.
Bull shit. Every presidential election of your young life has been exactly a high school popularity contest, nothing more or less. Clinton was the National Student Council president, GWB was a cheerleader you said it yourself, and the JEF is the moral equivalent of Napoleon Dynamite's buddy. This is the world you made for yourself, and even at that, we're still better at it than you are. Plus we fuck the prom queen. Ours is a girl.
Ace, I bet you can diagram a sentence to within an inch of its life. Posted by: fluffy at August 24, 2012 04:33 PM (3SvjA) 409

I think Sean Hannity is a large part of the reason Maher still has his HBO show. He will not ignore the dickhead.

I think we should have a contest for the next joke Romney can tell. I liked the "driving off with dinner on the roof" one.

When do they "remember" all the bad stuff is bad stuff ? When Romney is sworn in or on Wednesday morning November 7? And being from NYC, I'm the biggest racist in the whole wide world!

I agree about Romney. If he can get Obama or Biden to lose their cool it will the "Obama is such a nice guy" memo. Obama is NOT a nice guy. Never has been. One small example is in Obama's "humor" said about Rubio- "Your guy may get his ass kicked" . Narcissits hate to be made fun of.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 24, 2012 04:42 PM (k4rbt) 416
Meant. It will explode the "Obama is a nice guy" memo.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 24, 2012 04:43 PM (k4rbt) 417
I have never understood the "Obama is a nice guy" memo. He has always come across as a smart-alec to me. I'm sure a couple of the morons could state it a little more colorfully.

The brilliance of Romney's joke is that it was the most whitebread joke imaginable. Now, time to sit back and observe the unbiased, unpolitical, objective media at work.

Obama joked on a number of occasions about his birth certificate. He even plastered it on coffee mugs and tees to mock birthers. Sorta kind like a carnival barker.
Who's to have the last laugh? Putting my money on the birthers. Posted by: CA Holly at August 24, 2012 10:21 PM (4jXrB) 439
