Barack Obama: "You Just Can't Make Stuff Up"
Obama Spokesmonster Stephanie Cutter: "I Disagree"

"Created" more jobs than Bush-- indeed, "created" more jobs than Reagan.

First of all.

Second of all.

Total Private Employment From the Current Employment Statistics Survey (National)

What Obama likes to do is count jobs "created" from the deepest depth of the recession. But that's not how we count recovery from a recession -- we say we've recovered when we've recovered up to the previous high point.

As the collapse was still occurring when Obama took office, there was still further to fall, so Obama likes to pretend that any jobs above the lowest-of-the-low are jobs he "created."

At this point in time, Obama still hasn't "created" a single net new job. His job figures remain negative, except when you play games as far as your start period for counting them.

Both Bush and Reagan added new jobs on top of the previous high-water mark for employment. Reagan's expansion was fueled by millions and millions of such jobs.

Obama has yet to even get back to zero.

By the way, the video of Romney's "bl*ss h*s h**rt" is now up.

He's speaking vigorously, so he doesn't employ the amused smile/head cock/drawn out annunciation that makes the Racial Dog-Whistle so especially vicious.

47 6oGAT, I am not a Frum Republican. Frum wanted Romney, and I most certainly did not. The reason I'm so bearish on this election is due to the simple facts which are

a) Romney sucks as a candidate, and got his ass handed to him in almost every fight he didn't massively outspend someone. Both in 2008 and 2012.

b) The polls currently show a tie, which is bad news because weak incumbents usually get stronger as election day approaches.

c) He has utterly failed to exploit the shit economy and has decided to fight the election on the terms most desired by his opponent. He utterly has failed to mobilize the white working class base.

If Romney goes on to win, fine, I was completely wrong and should not have been writing this. But don't be surprised if he doesn't.

62 Sefton here. No, not J.J., he's the smart one.
Rottencroch and Gipper and others of their ilk
Clinton did create more jobs than Reagan. Then again he didn't have to climb out of the hole Reagan did. Nor did Reagan have easy money policies. On the contrary. His were tight to fight inflation. Globalization and the peace dividend that Reagan earned for us allowed lower interest rates and spending in the 90s.
Clinton did raise taxes in 1993 but lowered them in 1997. Easy money did fuel the dot com bubble, that created jobs but you could say the same about W and the housing bubble. Neither were real.
What was real and what caused the increase in the number of jobs under Clinton was the reduction in the % Federal govert to GDP. Clinton lowered the government as a % of GDP: from 22.2 to 18.4. Smaller government more jobs. Just ask a smartliberal if you can find one

139 >>When Romney loses, can we at least agree not to make Akin and social cons the scape goat?

No.

Romney's entire strategy was to keep this race close until after the convention when he was free to actually start spending money. The entire free world knows the economy sucks, that we are teetering on the precipice of not just another recession but a complete collapse of our economy and way of life.

The economy and fiscal issues were the ENTIRE focus of this election up until ball brAkin decided to go full retard and give the Dems a wedge issue to beat us with, something to distract not just the campaign but put a pall over the RNC.

It was stupid and demonstrates an extreme lack of political wisdom and basic fucking common sense. That's on him and nobody else.

Romney is doing great in the polls against an incumbent who has better protection from the msm than the Pope does from his Swiss guards. The race is at worst a push or has Romney with a slight lead.

And now this dickhead nobody from MO wants to start talking about magic uteruses. Genius.

Does Mitt Romney have a space shuttle? He does not.

Yes, he did chose Perry over Romney then Romney over the others, as did I. Plain and simple, Perry and Romney were probably the only GOP candidates that entered the race that could beat Obama this year. Neither was my ideal candidate, but I haven't had an ideal choice since I started voting in presidential elections back in '88. Perhaps you should start to face "Reality."

208 Happy story for you guys:

My younger sis is pretty nonpolitical, socially lib, gay, fiscally
conservative, in her 20's, lives in NYC. Works in the arts and is part
of a union. Usually I am the one twisting her arm to talk about
politics. Well, for the last two months SHE has been the one leading our
phone convos, asking me the political//financial news of the day (I
usually link her plenty of articles from you guys, of course, and
started up a political tumblr just so I could drop her things to read in
one place.)

Yesterday we were chatting about Obama's blatant lies, like the
Romney-is-a-felon-but-i-didnt-call-him-that-swearsies thing, and she was
like "He is such a dick. How did all our friends get brainwashed by
him? Seriously?" I grinned like a fool, incredibly proud of her. I
worried with her moving to the city that she'd turn into a giant lib,
but if anything living/working in the city is making her a raging
libertarian. She is chomping at the bit to vote for Romney/Ryan. She
might be union, but she realizes that the group she works for depend
heavily on rich and generous donors; with the economy those donors are
being not so generous. Is worried about the cutbacks their budgets have
had, the quality of art they can do next season, and her job. Not all
the younguns have their heads in the sand, just though I'd pass that
good news along.

I invite you to attempt to persuade people to the righteousness of your cause.

As a technical matter it's trivially easy-- just sign up on blogspot.

The details of it are a little more difficult: You have to write a lot, and your writing has to seem much more right than wrong to a lot of people, at least most of the time.

I know that True Conservatives such as yourself think you have some sort of ownership interest in my business, my beliefs, my mind, and my own political philosophy, and would like to "nationalize" this blog, so to speak, so that you can use my platform to forward your agenda; but oddly enough many not-so-true conservatives disagree with this, and think that a man has a natural right to these things.

So Godspeed to you.

265 Two University of Colorado professors have devised a model to predict who will win the presidential election under current economic circumstances. The victor, they say, will be Republican Mitt Romney.

The model uses economic indicators from all 50 states to predict the race’s outcome. The forecast calls for Romney to win 320 electoral votes out of 538. It says Romney will also win virtually every state currently considered a swing state, including Colorado.

The professors who created the model, Ken Bickers from CU-Boulder and Michael Berry from CU-Denver, say it correctly forecast every winner of the electoral since 1980.

292 FWIW, I think that Atkins probably heard that abortion because of rape is very rare and made the illogical assumption that the reason for this is because of the magic rape proof uterus.

The real reason is that a woman is only fertile 4 days a month and rape is (typically) a one time sexual encounter. Add in the fact that rape itself is rare, and you come up with very small numbers.

All of which is meaningless because the frequency of a situation doesnt determine its ethical status, but it gives an idea of where his "logic".went so very, very wrong.

Yea, I saw that.

Romney is not losing this race. He's actually in a historically strong position. The race is essentially tied and Obama has been unable to break the mid-40s in either Gallup, traditionally a pro-Dem poll by 2-4 point, and ahead in Rasmussen by 2-4 for the last few weeks. This despite Obama throwing everything including the kitchen sink and toilet at him in attempt to kill him before Labor Day when the race begins in earnest. In short, there is nothing that will happen outside an enormous Black Swan that is going to break in Obama's favor between now and Nov. 6.

Romney has a huge war chest that is getting bigger every day. He has the momentum (or at least had it before the Pussy Riot) and the environment is only going to be more in his favor. The economic reports over the last three months combined with today's CBO report make it clear that we will have +8% unemployment until at least the end of the year and are at serious risk of a double dip ( yea, I know ).

Romney gets to start advertising after the RNC and if the race at Labor Day the race is even, Romney's leavin.

349 I see the angst about Akin is still running strong in many (including Ace), so I'll repost this from this morning:

So who would like some good news about the odds of us taking the Senate? Warning #math ahead.

I took CAC numbers from last night and dug up my old statistics book to figure out what the real odds of winning at least a net 4 seats are.

With 32 seats up for grabs, there are currently 23 of them held by Dems and 9 held by the GOP. Assuming that the "safe" seats are truly safe, meaning 0% chance of the expected winning party losing that seat, we have 2 vulnerable seats, while the Dems have 11. We currently hold 47 seats in the Senate. We need to win at least 3 seats for a tie and 4 seats for an outright majority.

Using CAC's odds of winning each seat (including Missouri, which is still possible for us to win, despite this idiot), we have the following odds (notice that I am taking Nebraska off the table, and putting that in with our certain to win pile).

Wisconsin - 99%
Montana - 90%
Massachusetts - 90%
North Dakota - 75%
Virginia - 60%
Florida - 50%
Ohio - 35%
New Mexico - 35%
Missouri - 10%
Michigan - 10%
Maine - 10%
Hawaii - 10%
Connecticut - 10%

That is 13 races that are at least somewhat competitive. We hold only 2 of these seats, and we already picked up 1 seat from Nebraska, so we need to win 4 of these races to guarantee at least a tie in the Senate. Note that if we win MA or ME then we need only 2 other wins to tie the Senate, the 4 used above is to account for the possibility of losing both. It makes the math a little easier.

Going back to the odds given by CAC, we have an average probability of winning each of these seats of 44.9%

So what are the odds of winning at least 4 of the seats? To get that, we use multiple copies of the following binomial formula:

Probability = #choices * (Prob of success ^ number of successes) * ((1 - Prob of success) ^ (total races - number of successes))

#choices = (total races)! / (number of successes)! * (total races - number of successes)!

We then calculate the odds of each possible outcome of number of wins. What are the odds we win 0 races (.04%), 1 race (.45%), and so on, until we get to the odds of winning all 13 (3.03 E-05). The total of all 14 possibilities adds up to 1 (100%).

Having done that, then the odds of winning at least 4 races is the total of all probabilities above the threshold of 4. So the odds of winning 4, plus odds of winning 5, etc.

The probability of winning 4 or more races of the 13 contested, given the above CAC odds?

90.61%

The probability of winning 3 or more races (gives us a feel of our chances if we hold MA)?

97.28%

355 @333

well, someone posted last night a supposed medical journal citation (from maybe 1972?) that had been appropriated by the hard-core christian pro-life community...apparently, the article claimed that pregnancy from rape happens with ca. 5% frequency, and pregnancy from consensual sex with ca. 8%, attempting to control for other factors.

it jives with everything we know about the stress response's detrimental effects on foetal viability that pregnancies from rape fertilisations would be less ultimately successful than those from consensual unions, but either way, it's still CLEAR from that article that rape-pregnancies CAN AND DO certainly occur.

i don't know anything about the issue whatasoever, but the commenter last night claimed that the hard-right fringe of the pro-life community had apparently adopted this research as proof that the uterus has some defence mechanism against rape-sperm...the commenter CLAIMED that it was a fairly common belief among some of the pro-life set.

with what i know about MANY (certainly not all) christians' propensity to invent proprietary interpretations of the science to better jive with their out-dated weltanshauunugen, i wouldn't be terribly surprised if it were true.

dejected, perhaps, but not terribly surprised. remember, we're talking about a group of people who is absolutely convinced that radiocarbon dating is a satanic false prophecy and the earth is absolutely no older than 6000 years...not that the bible says so, but their INTERPRETATION says so.

it's really not a stretch to consider that they have interpreted the results of research showing reduced viability for rape pregnancies as "proof" that the uterus has some physiological anti-rape mechanism, and therefore they are fully justified in their "no-rape-exception" approach to pro-life politics.

(n.b.: before the science-friendly christians here get their panties in a bunch and start attacking me in that christlike manner to which they have shown themselves so well-attuned, it should be noted that i am talking about a very small subset of intentionally, wilfully ignorant science-deniers, not mainstream christians or, for that matter, mainstream pro-lifers, among which group i count myself!)

Election wise, acting like he's somehow doing great all the time, when in reality he's underperforming in an ideal environment for us, just rubs me the wrong way. It lulls us into a false sense of security.

And that's really the point. No one wants to listen to people bitch and moan about not liking Romney because he's going to be the candidate. All we can do now is hope he means what he says on the campaign trail, that it resonates with America, and that we can win in November so we can start down the long road of attempting to fix what's wrong with this country.

It's also up to us to hold Romney to his promises if he does win and to provide him with the most conservative Congress possible. I don't really know who you think would be doing a better job campaign wise either.

So if you like Keynesian/Kenyan socialism then go right ahead and keep shilling for RoN pAuL or pout and cry and bitch about true conservatism or whatever. His Thursday poll is usually the best, although last week he got a huge Dem outlier on Thursday.

My spouse sees a large number of clients who (as Morons with whom I've discussed this in person know) are varying degrees of left and lefter, as they hail primarily from the Transgender community.

To a MAN (and I use that term advisedly), those who were staunch Obama acolytes have flipped, in some cases violently, from being rabidly pro-O to being just as rabidly the opposite. We're talking about 12 or 14 individuals from all walks of life and professions, in a deep blue State. So this is not an isolated or uninteresting phenomenon, IMHO.

Also: there are "Linda" (McMahon) signs all up and down our block that I didn't see two years ago, and even one "OMG" (Obama Must Go!, from dumpyourincumbent.com) lawn sign prominently displayed. Ballsy.

434 I had a brain wave today.. (or a fever..) What if this Akins stuff is really sneaky plan? Ha ha ha.. I know but, wait..

Akins makes his fuck up (granted this was not part of the plan..) Then a call to the RNC "Prince" . What if this was coordinated from the get go as a response to the shit in Tampa and a severe overreach by the Dems? You know - "Once the eggs are broken, lets see if we can smear them on the Dems face" kinda thing.

I know this is a streach but, Rush's response was SOOOO measured and planned. He has blatantly told Akins to leave but, still is encouraging to stay? His calls from MO were heavily Screened to present him as a viable cannidate and to answer questions in the average R voter's head. I think it shored up the vote quite well in MO. I bet the polls come back pretty soon for Akin.

Akin can still win in MO and the rest of the R's can decidedly denounce him and make the issue tiresome for the debates. If it is a dead horse now, it will be a "not this dead horse again" Reaganesque moment in the debates. It also takes a weakness away from Ryan as he was going to be busted on the legislation that they co-sponsored.

Listen.. I am as pro-life as they come and I do stand with principal, but this thing has been awfully smoothly handled. It will blow over with the Hurricane and be a non-issue by next week and it will be a tiresome question in two weeks..

If this comes to plan, we may have the makings for a new magnificent bastard - Reince Priebus

437 mama winger - I'm not privy to the detailed commentary, I only get the highlights. But the highlights indicate to me that a LOT of people have woken up to the fact that they were out-and-out lied to.

In the case of the Transgender community, I know that one major factor is that it's (slowly) becoming clear that their recent "victories" - in terms of getting certain prescriptions, procedures and surgeries covered by insurance - now have an expiration date, i.e., the day they have to begin relying on ObamaTax to pay for their SRS, hormone treatments, etc. That is to say, the indications are that such things will be considered by the IPAB as "elective", and no longer covered by insurance.

439 >>I seriously doubt anyone thinks Romney is the next Reagan. He's a lot closer then the asshole in office now is though.

Reagan wasn't the next Reagan. Go look at his actual record not the misty, hazy memories of what you thought he was.

He helped explode the debt.

He signed EMTALA leading to the healthcare shit we are dealing with today.

He screwed the pooch on the middle east.

And lots, lots more.

What he did right was cut taxes and regulations. Thats what got the economy rolling.

I expect Romney can meet that bar.

440 Okay, Reality Check: we'll all stipulate that Romney isn't Reagan. (He's not dead, and his first name isn't Ronald, just for beginners.)

Why do you feel it so important to mention that, and then to dig in and defend it like it's Monte Cassino or something?

Let's examine the possibilities:

1.) You're an avid Republican upset because the party is nominating Mitt Romney instead of someone who has been dead since 2004. This suggests you're an idiot and/or insane, so we'll disregard it. For now.

2.) You're an avid supporter of some other Republican candidate who failed to get the nomination. Well . . . okay. Your boy, whoever he was, had a shot and didn't make it. Bitching now won't change anything, and makes you seem petty at best and idiotic at worst. Get over it.

3.) You're a Paulbot. 'Nuff said.

4.) You aren't a Republican at all. This is the best fit for the facts, as it explains why you're bitching about a candidate who has locked up the nomination and who is making a startlingly good showing as the campaign heats up. A Democrat trying to dampen our morale would say exactly the same shit you are.

So, you tell us: are you a petty, vindictive fool, or are you a consciously dishonest piece of shit?

442 @409, Godwin restrains me from expressing what I really think of your line of argument, but you did vote for Nixon, all 3 times, didn't you?

You're going to wear Akin up your ass; I hope for the next 12 years. But right up your ass is where he's going to be, because you can't get past the national pep rally. This nation is not a bandwagon, I'm not on it with you, and if you cram enough shit down people's throats they will just turn away from you, and Obama's victory will not be their fault, but yours.

You want unwavering devotion to your party, go clean up the pigsty.

I don't have much against Romney, but your attitude reminds me of everything that's wrong with traditional politics. There are other candidates, and I'm not sure I want to stand in the Big Winning Tent with you. Let me think about it while you work on your delivery, Professor.

A fucking disaster. Reagan was filled with dementia at that time.

of ownership interest in my business, my beliefs, my mind, and my own
political philosophy, and would like to "nationalize" this blog, so to
speak, so that you can use my platform to forward your agenda; but oddly
enough many not-so-true conservatives disagree with this, and think
that a man has a natural right to these things."

IMHO, Reality Check ain't no conservative. It (meant to say it) is just another Gerg-type liberal making a bunch of stupid arguments against Romney to get us all stirred up and discouraged, or something. I say we ignore it, and it might give up and go to the next blog over and hassle them instead.

Fuckin' Russkies made a few minor changes to the 1911 design and came up with the TT33 Tokarev pistol. Didn't pay John Browning (PBUH) a dime.

447 I thought about chiming in with one of my usual lame comments wrt to the turds that Reality Check has been dropping on the thread, but it looks like post 440 pretty much wraps it up.

I wish I had those kind of chops.

I second that motion. And, it's #4.

No conservative or republican is going to talk like that at this point in the election.

Clinton benefited from a tech boom/bubble. Plus his administration turned a blind eye to a lot of malfeasanse as long he was getting "donations"

455 Lauren,
heres a post from freeper by a magic uterus worshipper:

The great news is that Akin will demolish McCaskil anyway because she is so dumb. He is not dumb. He actually was dead right about so called “rape” and women shutting down with trauma. But let us assume for a moment that she gets pregnant. Are we going to execute her baby? How about executing the Daddy? How about telling mommy that she put herself in harms way . How bout the fact that so many rapes are “buyer remorse” ? Let us stop the slaughter of little babies— 4300 per day are murdered in our country!! Did you know that? Do you care? What if you were aborted?

My late Kentuckian great-grandmother would say that to me whenever I did or said something incredibly stupid or naive. I was very young and very naive and stupid, which seems to go with 'young'. She said it a lot.

Lovin' it.

If Tokarev (the man) borrowed anything from Browning (and he did), then it was borrowed from the Browning 1903 design, not the 1911. And Tokarev incorporated more than a few minor changes. The modular hammer/sear assembly was innovative for its time and wasn't a Browning design. I own the Polish TTC and the Yugoslavian M57 versions myself, and have considerable experience with the 1911 platform. The designs are distinct, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

The Soviets were big on borrowing aspects of a design that worked--the Makarov, for example, has a great many Walther attributes--largely because the Russians seized the Walther factories as they advanced to Berlin--but a Makarov is still a Makarov. It's its own thing.

Comes to that, most modern semi-automatic pistols (and machineguns et al) are the grandchildren of Browning's ideas. He was to guns what Da Vinci was to painting.

459 Looking at the transition from Clinton (bubble/bust) into GW Bush, one could say Clinton "created" jobs at the expense of the Bush presidency.

Many argue that Obama inherited Bush's economic blow up (not I, but many) which cost him jobs.

Keeping in mind that 9-11 alone significantly taxed GWB's job creation numbers, does anyone know the comparison of GW Bush job creation by May of 2004 vs. Obama's first 3 1/2 years at 0.1mm?
