the R+14 poll has one major problem - way too large a senior sample. however when you shift it to a more reasonable sample it's prob still a small Romney lead. it also shows seniors are not scared off by Ryan.

From the below June thread:
What Romney has going for him is (1) Hatred of Obama policies and the overwhelming desire to get him out of office (2) Bad bad economy has made the Democrats separate themselves from Obama this will result in lower turnout (3) Black unemployment has caused a lot of dissatisfaction. He will still get 96% of the black vote but they will not turn out in record droves this time. You can see this model developing in a lot of formerly guaranteed blue States like WI which have turned purple and maybe even red in the next election. The States that were borderline in 2008 will be large wins for Republicans. This election could turn into a Carteresque rout. It is Romney's to lose now. Posted by: Vic at June 26, 2012 11:42 AM (YdQQY) It has only got worse for Obama. MO not withstanding, this is going to turn into a rout unless Romney steps on his dick. And so far he has shown no signs of doing that. Posted by: Vic at August 22, 2012 11:36 AM (YdQQY) Posted by: dananjcon wants him some gubmint beef wellington at August 22, 2012 11:37 AM (eavT+) 55

Indeed...this is very foretelling and Brown went up 49 to 44 over Warren in MA as well...this in the northeast???? This is not a good sign for the Dems at all....If Conn has McMahon up by three and Ma has Brown up by 5 than there is serious movement in the polls. This is a great sign for the Repubs without any money yet from the massive war chest Mitt has been building and will be unleashed after the Convention!! Another Florida poll from the same group that surveyed Michiganand had Mitt up by 4 has Mitt up by 14 in Florida amongcloseto 1,600 Likely Voters!! They released this poll yesterday as well. It's a bunch of "meh". I saw it buried in an abc piece about the West Chester rally yesterday. In PGH, a radio host tried to press Ryan on the forcible rape language in that amendment they sponsored and he wouldn't let the interviewer go there. He just said, "rape is rape", period. @97 actually that was in September after a convention boost (which would be killed for good by the financial crisis). Historically, incumbents always start the race ahead, and Historically GOPers poll worse per-convention then they do post-convention.

They think abortion is so highly regarded that people will love them for it. Thus they ignore the polls - most Americans still consider it OK only in fairly limited circumstances. Of course, at the same time, the libs in generalare desperate to keep any real exposure of the truth out of the media. A while back there was an effort to buy air time for a documentary that shows what really goes on in an abortion mill, and the libtards moved heaven and earth to make sure it didn't air. To my mind, loudly pushing abortion rights and gay marriage turn off more voters than they turn towards their point of view. Most people feel that women should be allowed to terminate a pregnancy very, very early in its term for valid private reasons such as rape, incest, or health of the mother. Those same folks are horrified by late term abortions and partial birth abortions. As for gay marriage, it has failed every ballot initiative because most people, no matter how casual they are about religion, really believe in their heart of hearts that marriage is for one man and one woman.
But, we do live in interesting times, we have bj clinton trotting all over the world in his elder statesman role, despite the fact that he is scum and a sexual predator--all because he thinks infanticide by tortuous dismemberment is A-OK. Think about it, PETA and people who are deeply committed to living a vegan life style because they cannot bear to think of an animal suffering also support disposing of human children in a manner that they would abhor where the fetus a calf, a puppy, or a kitten. A) it would not be a major commitment of troops, but more of a logistical hand to Israel and also some Air and Sea Power. That is why the damned idiot Akin stepped on his (and our) dicks so hard. Any Republican doing an interview with the press should answer every question with economy, unemployment, and general lying and lawlessness of Obama. That is regardless of what the press asks. Great post.
To my mind, loudly pushing abortion rights and gay marriage turn off more voters than they turn towards their point of view. Most people feel that women should be allowed to terminate a pregnancy very, very early in its term for valid private reasons such as rape, incest, or health of the mother. Europe has far less permissive abortion laws. Mostly because it actually has to be a law over there and we had law school graduates imposing one-size-fits-all on us. Basically, third trimester abortions are very difficult to get, although there isn't much controversy over the first trimester or the morning after pill. Truth be told, if we were allowed to use the messiness of democracy, rather than the language of "rights", it would have probably resolved similarly. Those same folks are horrified by late term abortions and partial birth abortions. As for gay marriage, it has failed every ballot initiative because most people, no matter how casual they are about religion, really believe in their heart of hearts that marriage is for one man and one woman. There's also the polygamy thing. If you use any "rights" argument, then polygamy is next. That has real and tangible social damage. Also, same-sex marriage supporters are their own worst enemies. Think about it, PETA and people who are deeply committed to living a vegan life style because they cannot bear to think of an animal suffering also support disposing of human children in a manner that they would abhor where the fetus a calf, a puppy, or a kitten. P.J. O'Rourke observed that there was only one position which made no sense with regards to the death penalty and abortion. Being pro-abort and anti-death penalty is the only illogical position. You could also try removing all unneccessary hardware from your car like extra seats and stuff to reduce the weight, lighter cars take less gas to push. OK, enough trolling.
But seriously, say you are Team Obama: What do you got besides minor wedge issues to run on? War on women, Mediscare, etc--those aren't actions of offense, those are what you do to try and hold your base. Where is the policy proposals, the big ideas that get people excited to vote for you? More of the same--only bigger and/or better--that's all they got. So, that's a bust. What events do you have to hope for to improve your chances? War sure as hell won't help. Can the economy get better? How? They can fudge the numbers. But even that can be dismissed as "we've seen minor increases before, this is no different." So, it's all praying to whatever they pray to that the GOP screws up. There's a good track record there. But even that's a par 4 hole-in-one shot at this point. It has to be live girl/dead boy to have enough juice to move the needle at this point. Posted by: RoyalOil at August 22, 2012 12:33 PM (imtbm) 264

His "money bomb" is netting at most $7K/day even after national TV appearances. That won't last. Consider the expenses of paying these professionals. Then of having offices in such a big state. and here's an analogy for Akin As Republicans and Conservatives, we must traverse a treacherous course of pitfalls set up by the Democrats. On Sunday Akin stepped in quicksand. As he was sinking and struggling, almost every other Republican and Conservative jumped into the quicksand and tried to push Akin down and make him disappear. So now the whole GOP is in the quicksand...with Akin. Sure, they'll get out eventually. But the moral of the story is either throw the guy a rope and pull him out or let him sink. You have to admit, the people of Connecticut did themselves a big favor (but not the nation) in electing Blumenthal to the Senate. It got him out of the State AG slot where he was doing REAL harm to the State (the dem who took over the position dropped 500+ lawsuits)...
But after 2010 when they didn't elect even 1 out of the 5 House Seats to Republicans, I thought CT was 100% lost (even while envisioning a national preference cascade). But with a crappy Dem Governor (after years of somewhat solid, moderate republican governors) who has bent the citizens over for the benefit of the PEU's, and a SCoaMF in the White House, maybe the cascade will even hit there. If this polling is solid, it indicates that any state that went (R) in 2010 (Maine, MI, WI, etc) ain't going for SCoaMF this fall, and it's all over but the arson when the lefties melt-down Posted by: Bill from Chappaqua at August 22, 2012 12:44 PM (8BaAK) 312

The only savings from your logic is tire wear. If the larger wheels turn less, then you aren't saving any gas, only treads. And larger wheels are heavier, adding more weight to the car and increases braking distances. 1. Yes overinflating tires saves gas by reducing tire friction. This is both known, and dangerous. The loss of friction reduces your ability to control the automobile. It will more likely skid in corners, while making swerves, and while breaking (and accelerating if you have enough power) 2. The reason braking takes more space is the loss of friction. The weight of the additional air you add to the tire between properly inflated and safely overinflated is negligible, and the weight of the rubber doesn't change whether the tire is inflated or not. 304 WCL,
No I don't think so. The US can beat the ME is energy sales in a decade friend. Bombing the shit out of Assholistan is a winner. The US needs to get off its ass people need to start destroying the sierra club's chokehold on our resources and we need to get the hell back to work. WCL we *are* the country we are accused of being we just have a left wing that shits themselves when the GOP holds the joystick to get the controller back. I'd develop submersible diesel Drone Aircraft carriers, entire Carrier Group AirMobile Divisions and I would raise unholy hell with the ME. Europe is not relevant as anything other than a future threat. We should cut a backroom deal with China and split the world in half. The US sphere is our two Continents and Oz Chhina and Russia can take Asia and EUrope and Africa is where we play "brushfire wars" for fun and profit. I miss the bilateral world...it is not my fault EUtopia quit screwing with purpose and imported Muslims to be their kids. Posted by: sven10077 at August 22, 2012 12:49 PM (LRFds) 337

@292 - At the time I regarded Reagan's bombing of Libya as a bit of a lightweight Cap Weinberger maneuver, not nearly enough to do any good, it kept Qaddafi's head down for a couple years but it didn't fix the problem as we saw with Pan Am 103, the British embassy situation, etc.
Reagan's Mideast policy was generally a failure, can someone please explain to me why anyone but George Shultz thought it was a good idea that we should save Arafat from having the Israelis put a 105mm hole through his body in Lebanon? Posted by: JEM at August 22, 2012 12:51 PM (o+SC1) 343

We're conducting operations that are blatant acts of War, on UN member States... and we are inserting ourselves into the internal politics of countries throughout the Mid East, Israel included... even countries like Egypt, where we helped create the conditions for our enemies to take over. We are busy ignoring and breaking the very rules we helped create with the UN... (but then thats Obama's thing, just ignore inconvenient laws and rules). Hell.... we even put a Hit out on an American Citizen, AND HIS SON, without anything other than an Executive Order.... and that, is called MURDER. And yet, we've overthrown multiple governments in the last 10 years... some with bombing, some with full on military invasion.
We are currently involved in multiple LIC actions... and are still occupying a country 10 years after invasion... Posted by: Romeo13 ? I thought the point of total warfare was to avoid long-term occupations??? We won lightening quick invasions in Iraq/Afghan, and then litigated the occupations with ridiculous ROE, billions to locals who took the money and ran, and still continue to pretend that Afghan isn't in thrall to the Pakis and that Iraq isn't going to fall back into a strongman's grip. Remember when Reagan bombed Libya? It was a spanking, not an invasion... I propose taking that Strategy to the next level... And isn't reliance on air power alone another slow grind that yields little in long term results? Posted by: weft cut-loop at August 22, 2012 12:55 PM (Q/1Jp) 357
342 JEM,
Remember 9/11 hadn't happened yet we were afraid Arafish dying would weaponize Islam. Reagan bombing worked for the most part, but we had the escalation risks from ramping it up too much. Anybody seen the Ulsterman thing about a false-flag op at the RNC Convention--possibly/probably related to Biden. I still can't decide if Ulsterman is for real or marvellously creative and on-topic political fiction, myself . . Posted by: filbert Been trying to figure that out myself, but i sure do enjoy reading his mole reports. If he is for real and Obama loses, i would love to find out who that mole is. But if obama loses, i am pretty confident all the DemoRats that have been living in fear of him in his party will be doing enough belly aching about him to fill up 5 volumes of the encyclopedia brittanica Posted by: jeremiah Gosh Darn Amerikkka Wright at August 22, 2012 01:11 PM (ovpNn) 424

Arrg, yes. We missed the opportunity to see what 16" guns would do to a modern city.
Posted by: toby928© at August 22, 2012 01:02 PM (QupBk) Actualy, the city was so fragmented into groups that the key strategy was to grab the 3 major roads coming in, and the Ridge overlooking the city, seal off the city, pull back into our compounds, Let loose ONE full 16 inch broadside onto the ridge overlooking the city.... then DEMAND the city inhabitants cough up the groups responsible... Would have been a sectarian bloodbath.... but they would have given up those who eventualy became Hezbolah, before they got too powerful. Posted by: Romeo13 at August 22, 2012 01:12 PM (lZBBB) 429

Bed Bugs in the NE, bird flu, and any number of other diseases that use biting insects as their vector.....honestly, I'm waiting for Malaria to make a re-appearance in this country....and I expect the CDC to tell us all about the magical wonders of the bed-net. 418 PA,
No, most politicians look at Iraq and see smashing success of "nation building" I see a nation who had even worse mega-spenders waste treasure and blood to empower a faction that is an ally to the longer term foe and regional destabilizer Iran. The ONLY justification I ever used for "why Iraq" was that in having actionable assets on both sides of Iran so long as we cut a deal with Ivan to give him the Northern Oil Well concessions we had 'em screwed. "Thank God" we did not grow the military to double, and actually "do anything" productive long term in either of the wings. This Godforsaken conflict in 'ghani has gone on longer than the Hot phase of 'nam to less MIC gain. Vietnam at least let us R+D conventional war tactics and equipment against Communist Bloc trained forces.... this is just suck Posted by: sven10077 at August 22, 2012 01:15 PM (LRFds) 441

If the RNC and all Republicans haven't learned the true lesson of the Akin debacle, they all need to just go home and try to earn a living.
The fact is, they're ALL out of touch. What they NEED to do is go back to their districts and SPEND TIME with their constituents. I'm not talking about some staged town hall or any bullshit like that. Go to their homes, invite them to your office. Make yourself available. LISTEN TO WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY. They're all surrounded by yes men (and women) and environments that blow so much smoke up their asses, they think they're HOLY!!! This MUST stop. KNOW your public, then you can lead them SUCCESSFULLY. Thank you. Posted by: © Sponge at August 22, 2012 01:15 PM (UK9cE) 444

Noooory (how many o's, anyway?) kinda broke the 'willing suspension of disbelief' that I had in the old Art Bell days, actually.
Bell always had this knack for being credulous-but-not-quite-falling-for-it that Noory just can't match. I never quite knew for sure if Bell was falling for the bullshit, but I've got the suspicion that Noory actually buys in. Posted by: filbert at August 22, 2012 01:18 PM (smvTK) 448

Honestly? I'm starting to wonder if Obozo didn't screw himself by going all-in on O-care in term one--and not just for the obvious reasons. That's the sort of project you use to ensure a term two, but he blew his wad in his first two years and it's been all downhill from there.
If he'd waited--thrown out some more popular, less ponderous 'reforms' first--he might not have set off the Tea Party revolt, the 2010 debacle, and all that, and would be set to go for broke in 2013 and beyond. It's enough to make a body think he's simply not very good at this... Posted by: Brother Cavil, New Caprica City DMV at August 22, 2012 01:22 PM (GBXon) 452

I've never understood why the State Department
inists on saddling any country that we conquer with an unworkable European parliamentary system rather than just giving them our own Constitution to copy. Posted by: toby928© at August 22, 2012 12:25 PM (QupBk) I think the first step to understanding this is the realization that the State Dept is populated by a bunch of anti-American commie fucks who hate everything about the Constitution and are in there to sow discontent elsewhere. After that, everything makes sense. Posted by: Captain Hate (dagny solidarity) at August 22, 2012 01:28 PM (nmgjt) 456

I am not always a fan of the Blonde Bombthrower, but, that book should be required reading for anyone with Conservative leanings. It is also a book that I would recommend to folks to give a young person on the verge of becoming a voter. Have them read it, then discuss it with them.
