Let's see now...mortgages in crisis, unemployment above 8% for over 40 weeks, record food stamp usage (and all the fraud that goes with it), businesses being trashed instead of encouraged, tax law is getting increasingly more complex and obtuse, health care run by out-of-touch government bureaucrats rather than the patient and doctor, more and more people dependent on Sugar Daddy government, fewer and fewer people supporting more and more lazy moochers, Social Security benefits decreasing, more people getting long-term disability than getting jobs, Medicaid in crisis, porous borders and a general decrease in the average wage. These failures and more are the results of socialist policies.

On that theme (and because the thread topic sucks) I will share a fond hobo memory from my childhood. I had a friend who lived out on the edge of town. We used to walk along the train tracks until we came upon a small copse of trees sited well below the tracks. We threw handfuls of rocks into the trees until the hobos started yelling, then we knew where to throw a few more times until we we saw then come out of the trees. Then we ran. (we were too young to take hobos by ourselves back then)

Even then we knew how to locate them and flush them out into the open...

101 How do we deal with leftist propaganda . It's everywhere and threatens to smother legitimate dissent .
Someone in an earlier thread mentioned the ever popular short length of rebar as a field expedient bludgeon .
So , I've given it some thought . I'm thinking that #5 rebar should be optimal size . #4 seems a little too light and #3 is right out , unless , of course the user is a woman of a certain age ,#6 is a tad heavy so everything 6 and above should be discarded unless the wielder is in excellent condition .
The numbers in rebar designation correspond to 1/8" in diameter .
In summary , when picking through the wasteland of democrat urban policy avail yourself of a two to four ft. piece of #5 rebar and I think the average moron will be pleasantly surprised at it's effectiveness as a negotiating tool .

102 NPR's gabfest mid mornings during the week includes "On Point" with host Tom Ashbrook. It is one of the most flamingly liberal things on the air, and is an entertaining listen. I was in the shop doing some glue-ups on a table I'm building, and having a chuckle listening to their discussion of the various Tea Party candidates for congress.

They get talking about the Senate, and how it may go bad for them, but not to sixty votes, and then all nod their heads about how one cannot bring anything to America without those sixty votes.

I guess they are forgetting about something called reconciliation.

103 Sorkin can't write conservative dialogue because he does not understand the principles of conservatism.

To be a conservative, you usually are marinated in liberalism by the popular culture and public school until you figure out liberalism does not work in real life.

He hasn't a clue.

104 Thanks for the obama death list. I live in Oklahoma, which is adjacent to Arkansas and we knew about bj and the Arkansas Mafia disposing of people when he was Governor. Parts of Arkansas are so remote and hilly with woody brush filled gullies that you can throw a body in there and it will never be found. You got crosswise with bj or hillary and you just disappeared. The citizens of Arkansas were the happiest people on the planet when bj got elected POTUS because they could finally be rid of him. Yes, the Presidential Library is here, but, he rarely visits it and I do not think hillary or even chelsea has been back to Arkansas in well over ten years, because they are now citizens of the world, dontcha know.

Someone in an earlier thread mentioned the ever popular short length of rebar as a field expedient bludgeon .

So , I've given it some thought . I'm thinking that #5 rebar should
be optimal size . #4 seems a little too light and #3 is right out ,
unless , of course the user is a woman of a certain age ,#6 is a tad
heavy so everything 6 and above should be discarded unless the wielder
is in excellent condition .

The numbers in rebar designation correspond to 1/8" in diameter .

In summary , when picking through the wasteland of democrat urban
policy avail yourself of a two to four ft. piece of #5 rebar and I think
the average moron will be pleasantly surprised at it's effectiveness as
a negotiating tool .

As long as I've been using rebar for my hobo hunting, I've never looked at it from an engineering perspective, preferring the intuitive heft/splat factor. Thanks for the analysis.

Posted by: Chris M at August 08, 2012 12:20 PM (b3vSq)

--------------->>>
No, the car is a STUPID idea from an engineering perspective. The electricity to charge the car's battery doesn't come out of a magic hole in the wall of your house. The electricity has to be generated somewhere; most likely from a coal-fired or nat-gas plant. Because of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics (entropy always increases in the system), there is going to be a loss in the power transfer.

Batteries don't have the power density of hydrocarbons. The most likely alternative to the internal combustion engine is going to be the fuel cell. Fuel cells are very efficient in the conversion of chemical energy into electricity. The problem is that fuel cells are very expensive.

I'm not uninformed about which I speak: I have a BSME and actually spent a little time learning about fuel cells.

Read the whole website, and get back to me that electric cars are impossible.

Impossible... yes. For now. Give it ~10 years.

On the side it brings up an interesting topic if libertarian/conservative ideas about the right to manually drive cars, since a lot of the energy savings of robocars come from the fact that as accidents approach 0, we don't need all the safety features(bulk) that we put on cars now. This is nullified if people are still allowed to manually drive.

So, driving 30 miles on battery then burning "fossil fuels" for the remaining 300 mile range is cool? And if you can't afford a $40,000 Volt, why don't you look at a cheaper alternative, say in the $14 to $20k range that gets WAY better gas mileage than that POS?

How simple some can be.

did you lose an "h"?

Hah!

About fifteen years ago, I worked with a guy who went by "John." Once, I heard him give his full name as "Jonathan." I asked if that was spelled "Johnathan," and he said it was not.

I told him that most people I knew named Jonathan went by "Jon" without the "H." He told me that most people he knew named Jonathan were fucking pricks.

454 extreme lightweight cars -> superb MPG

Also illegal to sell as people carriers because they won't meet Federal crash safety standards. VW produced a diesel/electric hybrid research vehicle that got in the 600+mpg range, but that tech can't be commercialized as is. Federal standards would drop it down to the 100mpg range once all the weight is added and it has to carry a suspension and frame suitable for actual road use.

461 Read. The. Website.

Have you actually read it, because I'm reading it now and a) the guy sounds like a lib-tard and b) his answer for oncoming traffic is "More one way and divided roads." F that noise.

It's typical "The Robots will save us" nonsense that subs in for "the Government will save us" drivel.

And that's before we even get into the technology interaction problems.
Just off the top of my head:
* To get the cars to take the best (for whatever definition you choose for that word) path to a destination, they would all have to be networked or centrally controlled. Networked or centrally controlled means the system is open to disruption via hacking and other nasty things.
* Even one car that doesn't use the system breaks the system, so you would have to mandate that all cars have a compatible "Robocar" system.
* Even ignoring the previous two concerns, collisions happen int he electronics and computer worlds all the time. It's not as easy as he seems to believe to avoid collision efficiently. Indeed, many computer systems (and robot guidance systems) are built with the assumption that collisions are supposed to occur.

We're not within 10 years. We're not within 20 years. I'd be moderately surprised if we're within 100 years.

1) Heh, I stopped reading at "Who killed the electric car?" The writer doesn't recognize Adam Smith's invisible pimp hand when it slaps him across the face with reality.

2) Nice straw man argument. I never said that electric cars are impossible (since they've been around since ~1900), they just don't make good engineering sense. Get back to me when you have a battery with the power density of hydrocarbons or fuel cells.

Legal issues are the hardest thing about robocars. We may still screw ourselves over on it simply through this, but Google is pushing hard in Nevada for example.

Yeah, the lack of self-awareness among leftists is one of their more endearing traits. I actually refer to the "environmentalists" as neo-luddites.

Of course, the enviro-commies don't give a sh!t about the environment (China and India get a free pass) but want to damage the American industrial base.

I was directly addressing your concern about how densities suck. My point was that it won't really matter in 20 years due to the efficiency of ultra-light cars that essentially can't crash.

unpossible,

474 Hah. Me fail English, that's unpossible!(Simpsons quote)

Of course not. "Essentially" is the key word here.

Posted by: HoboJerky, profit of DOOM! at August 08, 2012 01:51 PM (xAtAj)

475 When you're up against a video network, it's good to remember a variant of the old newspaper owners' creed, and never argue with a man who buys electrons by the barrel.

And what happened, see, is that some electrons got out of their corral for the rest of us to wrangle, and Cyber-Something is going to have to round them all up and put them all back in, Lest There Be An Abomination.

Posted by: comatus at August 08, 2012 02:13 PM (qaVK+)

476 "Essentially" does not trump LAWYER.

Crash X severely injures citizen Y. LAWYERS ABC and D sue your company into dust since you removed anti-crash systems proven to work for years.

You're welcome to go another round but you'll just prove my other thesis this thread about dumb ideas lasting.
