Jon Lovitz: You Know, I'm Beginning To Suspect That The Self-Styled Agents of Tolerance on the Left May Not In Fact Be Very Tolerant At All

Tolerance, yeah. That's the ticket.

The real story, as Lovitz sees it, is how the press is going after comedians. He praised two conservative media outlets for their coverage of his Obama comments.

“Your site and Twitchy.com, they get the humor. The Huffington Post … their comedy guys have no sense of humor and their headlines are lying,” he says. The latter referenced Lovitz’s guest hosting gig for fellow “SNL” star Dennis Miller on the latter’s weekday radio program.

...

Lovitz also got called a racist for critiquing the president, even though he’s never been associated publicly with any racially insensitive comments. It particularly galls him since one of his next projects is co-starring on “Mr. Box Office,” a new television series with a mostly black cast.

“I don’t see the president as black or white. He’ a man,” Lovitz says, adding he's frustrated by his own party rushing to slap a racist label on him.

"What I find bizarre is how the quote liberals are bringing up race ... saying, 'shut the fuck up.' I find them so close minded. I thought you were liberal," he says. "You should be tolerant of everybody whether they agree with you or not."

Lovitz also takes issue with organizations like GLAAD which pounce on comedians for saying politically incorrect material on stage.

“They don’t understand irony and sarcasm. They take what [comedians] say literally … it’s ridiculous,” he says.

One thing he's on about -- as are other comedians -- is the gag-order coming down from the Tender Forces of Sensitivity Enforcement on over-the-line jokes like Dane Cook's or Daniel Tosh's. Cook joked about the Aurora shootings; Tosh about rape; and Lovitz about Obama (and you can see how those things are all equally sensitive, no?).

With all respect to Hipster McGoo Zack Galafinakis (however it's spelled), this is a truly creepy development.

20 also i think race with Obama matters in that the whole "anti-colonialist" buzz in conservative circles a while ago, while overstated, had a grain of truth in it. the guy obviously sees America and the history of the Western world in general as fundamentally oppressive outside of select historical liberal movements. he's "fixing" that as President.

of course this is no different from rich white liberals on the same matters but people likely think Obama has more "cred" on the subject for growing up mixed-race and being self-conscious about not "selling out" in evil Amurrica.

58 "I don’t see the president as black or white. He’s a man"

Unfortunately, I do see Obama as a black man because we have been conditioned to always consider our motives in the presence of AA's.

Whenever I meet a black person, I have this weird internal dialogue that goes something like:

Oh. A black man. Better be on my best behavior so that I don't offend him. Or is that offensive in itself because I am treating him with more deference than I do a white guy? I wonder if the black dude senses that I am uneasy and not sure what to do? Do I smile, but not too much? Do I greet him first or do I wait for him to initiate conversation?

Crap! I just held the door open for him and now he must think I am being condescending and disrespectful. Maybe I should have just let him get the door himself. But if I do he will think I am purposely ignoring him or am pulling some kind of white power trip on him.

I think I will just wipe out all consideration of his race, but then I will be diminishing his personhood because I would certainly never discount a white guy's race.

Huh. It may be that he is angry at me anyway, and there is nothing I can do about it. Do I assume that, or do I assume that we are equals and simply evaluate the encounter based on how things play out?

But, wait. Maybe I am a racist and deserve the opprobrium coming my way. After all, I am having this conversation with myself. Maybe I should apologize. Ridiculous. Why would I apologize for thoughts beyond my control? Perhaps I have a right to be angry with HIM! I resent that he has put me in this position merely because I am white and he is black. I'll bet he is enjoying this.

All this anxiety just because I wanted to tell him his fly is open.

97 Lobito finds himself in a tough spot, because although he is tolerant and left-leaning, that will get his humor nowhere. The left has decided no more Mr. Nice Guy. They have become so entrenched in our culture, that they no longer have to try to act normal. If you're nog for them, uou're against them. That kind of predictability makes for shitty punch lines.

The very very short version of the longbow thingy is that ace did a very serious, very heartfelt, very earnest post about racial humor and the dangers thereof. This was after some Unfortunate Events in comments. The discussion in the comments veered off into a discussion about longbows v. crossbows. Ace then got pissed and kept trying to get us to cut it out. That went as well as expected. There was yelling and Recriminations and all that stuff.

The don't forget was a reference to not forgetting that longbow discussions will get us yelled at. A lot. Of course, it's more or less obligatory that every thread mention longbows now. Kind of like how every thread will eventually devolve into a movie thread.

152 Merciful Jeezus look what happened when we landed on Mars:
Within ten minutes of this thing hitting the ground they got the first pictures back showing it on the ground, showing one of the wheels. (interruption) What was the question, HR? (interruption) (laughing) HR wants to know if it’s near the flag. Yeah, Sheila Jackson Lee was visiting NASA in Houston. That’s her district. She was in the Johnson Space Center for a previous Mars rover mission and that little rover… This thing is huge by the way. This rover is huge. This rover is larger than a Volkswagen, it looks like. It’s huge, for what it is.
And one of those missions, they brought Sheila Jackson Lee in. She’s a member of Congress. You know, show her the money is being well spent. And, as it’s shown moving around the Martian surface, she said, “Is it gonna go to where the astronauts planted the flag?” Of course, the staff of the Johnson Space Center said, “Okay, we got a woman here who doesn’t have the slightest idea that we’re talking about Mars, not the moon. How do we, A, not laugh; and then how do we answer her question without embarrassing her ’cause there’s a lot of other people here?” (interruption)

the only comedian/actor who went right that i enjoy is dennis miller, if only because he's so vocal about it at times. and it doesnt seem he tries to hold onto his leftist ideals as a crutch for his comic identity. or it could just be that we both share remnants of our former pittsburgh accents, who knows.

I'm not getting into the theological points who is saved and who is not. I do think that even if Jesus was not the Messiah, he honestly believed that he was the Messiah and - crucial here - in life he did not advertise this belief. Mainly what he taught, before that last week, was what he thought would work out for the best for humanity.
