A Touching Moment At This Year's Democratic Convention: Jimmy Carter Will Pass The Torch Of Worst Post WWII President To Barack Obama

With all the Democrats skipping Obama's renomination they must be desperate to fill the speaking slots.

The Democratic National Convention Committee announced Tuesday that Carter would address the convention by video on Sept. 4.
"A lifelong champion of human rights and investments in education and energy to spur economic development, President Carter will provide unique insight into President Obama’s ability to move our country forward and why we need his vision and leadership for a second term," Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 2012 convention chairman, said in a statement.
In a statement, Carter said that he and his wife regretted not being able to attend the convention in person.
"Rosalynn and I regret that we will be unable to be at the Democratic convention this year in Charlotte. However, we remain steadfast in our support for President Obama and the progress he will make in the next four years," Carter said.

You know what will get America's mind off Obama's economic record and charges he's indifferent at best to Israel? Jimmy Carter.

Of course Carter's appearance by video won't help with another problem Obama is going to face...no one is going to his big party.

Obama, once the biggest draw in politics, won’t likely attract crowds as large as those at the 2008 convention because voters have gone sour on the poor economy, insiders said.
“It’s always a concern about making sure there aren’t empty seats, but this is different,” said one Democratic official familiar with the convention plans.
“This is a different time than four years ago. It’s a different convention. And the president is viewed differently.”
The president will accept the party’s nomination on Sept. 6 in a Charlotte, NC, football stadium. that holds 80,000.
“They’re worried they can’t fill the stadium,” the official said.

Related Enough: I didn't think Mitt should invite Palin to speak at the RNC convention. She's a damned if you do, damned if you don't proposition. But, with the invitation to McCain to speak (a huge mistake), Romney has to invite Palin. Not doing so would be a slap in the face to a significant part of the party who loathes McCain (and at best, um, tolerates Romney) but loves her.

Regardless of whether Palin speaks at the convention or not, she'll still have a say in any policy after the election. All those senators and congressman who have been helped along the way by a Palin endorsement are going to listen when she takes a position.

134 Here are my takes on the conventions:

1. There are a lot of speaker slots to fill, so the fact that McCain gets one is no surprise, especially since he was the last candidate.

2. Completely understandable as to why they wouldn't want Bush to speak, but I doubt Bush wants to speak even if extended the invitation. It would go against his MO. That being said, there is still a big part of the party that likes and respects Bush. And it is the GOP convention. My suggestion would be that during the final night when Romney is formally nominated to have George and Laura offer a short video congratulations, along with 41 and Barbara, and finally with Nancy who can say something about how Ronnie would have supported Mitt and its time to get back to Reagan's conservatism. Something like that anyway, though I'm not sure about Nancy's health (or her mind). I think that would be highly appropriate, give reverance to the past GOP presidents without drawing unwanted attention to the Bush years.

3. Palin should speak and here is why. She brings people in. The people she turns off will not be watching this convention or voting for Mitt. If her appearance turns off certain GOP leaning voters, then why did we nominate Mitt in the first place. In any event, there is no denying she has a way of drawing an audience, we should use it. It makes for good TV. Let her introduce McCain, let her introduce Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. Just let her speak.

4. To sum up my last two points, let's not let this convention get defined by who didn't speak or appear. There are ways to do it without making them the center of attention or overshawdowing Mitt.

Regardless, somebody up there was saying something about everyone listening to Palin in the future - I disagree, I like Palin, but she is not a "thought leader" for the party. I am not saying she is dumb, I am saying she doesn't come up with ideas that are standards for the party. Paul Ryan is a thought leader. Newt Gingrich is. Romney isn't.

Also, on Petraeus, I doubt he would want the job, and I wouldn't assume that just because he was in the military that he is a conservative. He has certainly never run for public office. Drudge hit whoring.

Well Patraeus actually turned the "War" in Iraq around and put the US and it's Allies in a positive position until obama refused to even try to negotiate a "Status of Forces" Agreement to leave a stabalizing US force there, so the whole thing was for naught. So blame obama, not Patraeus.

The emails TheDC has obtained show that the Treasury Department, not the independent PBGC, was running the show.
