Media Blacked Out Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day

Okay, in the post below, I was going to claim the media blacked it out, but I didn't know if that was true; for one thing, I don't watch the media, so I had no idea. For another, I saw a stray mention in a comment or on Twitter that it was being covered on some local broadcast. So I thought maybe they were covering it.

Nope. The major papers embargoed the actual news.

[Y]ou wouldn't know anything about the national phenomenon by reading the front pages of most of the country's leading newspapers. There's no mention of Chick-fil-A on the front pages of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and the Boston Globe. The front pages of USA Today, the Dallas Morning News, and the Houston Chronicle have small headlines about the restaurant, while Chick-fil-A's hometown paper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, fits in a story below the fold under the heading, "Chick-fil-A Controversy." And the front pages of major news websites are quiet in their coverage as well.

Inside some of those papers, the coverage is still relatively scant. The L.A. Times has a news story, while the New York Times has an op-ed from the gay dean at the Georgia Tech business school encouraging Americans to let Chick-fil-A "fly free." The Washington Post ran a photograph, but no story.

It's a phenomenon we now know well, and yet it is still worth pointing out how astonishing this all is. Simply because we have become inured to a perfectly bizarre situation does not mean we should not make frequent note of how truly bizarre this situation is.

The situation is this: The last place -- not the first place, not the second, not the sixth -- you'd want to go to find coverage of news is an American newspaper or an American news broadcast.

They're not in the business of news any longer. The analogue that strikes me is, if you pardon this weird neologism (and pardon it because what I'm trying to describe is itself weird), news fashion.

See, I wouldn't expect a boutique fashion store to be catholic in the clothing it displays and sells. I'd expect it to be highly selective, skewing to the proprietor's own sense of style, his own insistence on what Good Taste consists of. I'd expect that in that fashion shop, what isn't available is as large a statement of principle than what is available.

And that is perfectly understandable for a tony, boutique, specific-taste fashion shop.

But this same mentality is bizarre when applied to the business of informing the public of the events of the day. The news media seem to be employing the fashionista's sense of style and taste -- the fashionista's overwrought, half-kidding concealing of her eyes and exclamation of "I do not see that!" when confronted with a dress not to her liking -- to the news.

The fashionista is right to "edit" the reality of her fashion shop to accord with her specific, idiosyncratic sense of the aesthetic. In doing so, she creates not only a brand identity for herself, but puts forth a manifesto, and aspiration, a declaration that "This is what the world should look like."

But a newsman? Is a newsman equally right to edit the reality of the daily record of the world's events so that it, too confirms with their sense of style, their aspiration as to what the world should look like?

I know the people lining up for Chick-fil-A on Wednesday were not the quite the clientele (I'm pronouncing that in as French a manner as I can) the media considers worthy. And yet, unless my eyes deceive, they do in fact exist and furthermore act in the tangible, real world we inhabit.

Fashion editing is expected in a fashion shop, but is reality editing acceptable in a newspaper? What is the purpose? To create, like the fashionista did, a small, heavily stylized and artificial world where a select clientele may visit, by invitation only? So that they may glimpse your manifesto of What Makes The World Pretty?

Addendum: Virginia Postrel has the pet idea that in a world with many consumer alternatives, most acceptable in terms of functionality, aesthetics will become the key differentiation, and consumers will gravitate towards products expressing their own concept of The Good.

And that's fine for consumer products. Smart phones, cars, shoes, computers, trash cans (you know there are high-end fashion-model trash cans right? what a world), and so forth.

But the news?

Is the news now an aesthetically-sculpted consumer product as well?

17 I have estimated it would take the population of the world about 125 years to cover California a foot thick in human shit.

Check my work:

California area is 163,696 sq miles, or 104,765,440 acres

Acre foot = 325,853 gallons

Need 34,138,173,117,562 gallons of shit

Assume:

1) Estimate average human shits 2 cups per day, or .125 gallons

2) Population of shitting humans is 6 billion, or 750 million gallons per day.

Therefore, it would take 45,517 days, or nearly 125 years.

This seems totally worthwhile.

31 It's another propaganda technique called disinformation. The following is from wiki.

"Disinformation is intentionally false or inaccurate information that is spread deliberately. For this reason, it is synonymous with and sometimes called black propaganda. It is an act of deception and false statements to convince someone of untruth. Disinformation should not be confused with misinformation, information that is unintentionally false.
Unlike traditional propaganda techniques designed to engage emotional support, disinformation is designed to manipulate the audience at the rational level by either discrediting conflicting information or supporting false conclusions. A common disinformation tactic is to mix some truth and observation with false conclusions and lies, or to reveal part of the truth while presenting it as the whole (a limited hangout).
Another technique of concealing facts, or censorship, is also used if the group can affect such control. When channels of information cannot be completely closed, they can be rendered useless by filling them with disinformation, effectively lowering their signal-to-noise ratio and discrediting the opposition by association with many easily disproved false claims.

33 Check out page 10 of today's NYT, allegedly the "paper of record." There's a helpful story for the reading clientele of the Times, cheerfully explaining the whole Chick-fil-A mess is rooted in those nutty Southerners, trying to defend a restaurant that's part of that whole goober way of life in the South.

And as part of this helpful article, the Times' reports that this whole defense of Chick-fil-A is part and parcel of that whole racist history of restaurants in the South, including the Woolworth lunch counter protests, the charges of racism against Denny's and Cracker Barrel, and so on.

See? According to the Times, Woolworth lunch counter + Denny's + Cracker Barrel = Chick-fil-A and racism!

The media didn't entirely ignore it. Here is a local report from a Florida newspaper:

"You think "Fggt this" and "N-word" President that would fly? Not to mention that those who said those hateful things were -- excuse the pun -- TOO CHICKEN to give me their names when I asked for it....too bad there wasn't another reporter around to go with me and film it. I really wanted to do the interviews on camera while eating out of a bucket of KFC."

Sorry for the repitition, but this has seemed to fit right in with the last threads.

Hate to burst your bubble, but it's actually a fairly new "standard" that news is supposed to be, somehow, "neutral" or above the fray. What's happening is that we're reverting to the old standard: if I'm the one writing something, I'll write what I want. If you disagree, that's fine- start your own newspaper.

And, frankly, as long as they're honest about that (I submit that what you find shocking is their dishonesty, not the fact they're embargoing reality) I don't have a problem with it; I can shop accordingly.

Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at August 03, 2012 03:37 PM (8y9MW)

90 I keep using this phrase, but it keeps being appropriate:

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Newsrooms today are FULL of angry gay people, especially at the NYT. Most journalists in the big city newsrooms came out of Northeastern journalism schools or UCLA. They've never set foot in the South, they don't know anyone who is a Christian and they've never read the Bible. It's a self-selecting clique that is representative only of the population of gay bars in New York and San Francisco. With a handful of affirmative-action blacks and Latinos thrown in. The folks at CNN are all imported to Atlanta from the North, and there is huge turnover there because most of them hate living in the South.

Why on Earth would you ever expect such people to report anything objectively, especially about a place like Chick-Fil-A? It is everything they despise - Southern, Christian, declasse fast food. Its owner could not be anyone but a retrograde Bible-thumping slob. That's not news!

102 What's not reported is at least as important as what is reported. Newspapers have limited space, TV/radio has limited time, so the editor picks and chooses what is "important" or "relevant." It's distinctly possible that the various editors/producers knew about the buycotts and decided that they simply didn't matter -- it wasn't a victim group so it didn't signify. Rednecks eating at a redneck joint? Dog bites man. Gays kissing at a redneck joint? Man bites dog, hence news.

The media sends out their helicopter to take a shot of that Vandalism done to a Chick-Fil-A location....
Yet, they don't think it "newsworthy" to send out their helicopters to film the ...long lines of cars and traffic jams, of people waiting to get in to Chick-Fil-A restaurants on Wednesday.

The media is desperate to *not show* that the majority of people in this country are against the idea of gay marriage.
Never mind that every time a State has put it up for a vote....it has been overwhelmingly voted down.

Up until a couple of months ago.....Barky himself was *against gay marriage*.
Where was the outrage then?
Doesn't that make him a "hater" too?

Barkywouldn't have been elected in the first place, if he had come out *for gay marriage* back in 2008.

So this Chick-Fil-A thing....is directly tied to Barky's re-election.
This is why the media is desperately trying to cover up...how many people have turned out to show support for Chick-Fil-A.

As long as there is sufficient reproduction among the heterosexual population (and they are 98%+ of the total), uncommon behaviors will tend to remain, rather than die out. There is no real genetic pressure to end homosexuality, so whatever is responsible for it (a combination of genetics, genetic-based behavior in the parent, and behavior) will stick around until it is actively selected against.

And I'm also guessing that the bombshell will be that Romney took capital gains deductions (plus losses) to 0 out his liabilities in all or a number of the years in question.

It's not illegal but will it go over very well with a lot of folks who resent rich people getting deductions that the average joe can't.

161 I always say the best part if Obama is reelected will be the near collapse of the old Media. Of CNN and MSNBC at least one and maybe both will have to shutdown. A 2nd Fox type channel will probably appear. Kids will start laughing their teachers out of the classroom. An near majority of an entire generation of Kids will be lost to the left. Kinda like what happened in schools between 03-07 against Bush.

The country may not survive... but neither will leftism as we have known it.

On the1st there were all kinds of people-- black and white, all ages. People there with their kids. The heat was atrocious. Employees offered us water and canvassed the line for the elderly and handicapped, which they invited in to the front of the line and which not one person objected to. Those who had brought umbrellas to block the sun handed them back to families with kids once they made it inside the building.

The staff was completely and consistently friendly and cheerful. The garbage was never overflowing, the napkin/ketchup area fully stocked, and the whole restaurant and bathroom completely clean. I have no idea how they did it. We waited 1.5 hours and I'm glad I did.

It was a total triumph of capitalism + Christian values.

So, Seriously, How Did Harry Reid Get So Rich?
This isn’t another tongue-in-cheek post about Sen. Harry Reid’s baseless allegation against Mitt Romney. It’s a serious question: Just how did Sen. Reid get so rich?

As a senator and the majority leader in the Senate, Reid pulls down a salary of $193,400 per year. According to the latest data from Opensecrets.org, which is from 2010, Reid has assets totalling $10,360,000.

How does this happen? And seriously, why hasn’t he released his tax returns?

Did Harry Reid take advantage of the insider trading knowledge that was only available to members of Congress, but not legally available to the rest of us? Is that what he did? He certainly has a number of large index funds among his assets, while 80% of his money is in real estate investments.

277 As I told my wife, this is not about marriage, the end result the radical gay left seeks is the destruction of all Judeo-Christian religions and any form of government based on said moral foundations.

It has nothing to do with equality or rights and has everything to do with destroying those who make them feel bad.

They are not happy people--they are miserable. Bitter and miserable people. Consumed with hate.

They will come after you.

I know some here support gay marriage. You are making a deal with the alligator and trusting that it will eat everyone else and be full by the time it gets to you.

And I say this to the moderate and average gays as well: They will line your ass up against the wall and shoot you as soon as they are done with us; maybe at the same time.

Because you will cross them. Everyone who is not a radical gay leftist will cross them.

If you believe there is anything, anything at all good about America, about our Constitution and our system of government, or--the worse sin of all--if you think there is anything good in the Bible: You WILL cross them and they WILL come after you.

They are scorpions, not misunderstood ladybugs.

In that way, they also influenced future coverage by the way they had covered current news in the past. Those days are gone.

I routinely search the web for old nuggets of info; what I refuse to use is links to old NYT articles. I consider them completely unreliable as sources. If all I can find is a NYT reference, then there is NO backstory. That's how unreliable I consider them as a source.

The point I'm making is that for a long while the MBM controlled the narrative going forward; that is now lost to them. May they themselves be lost in the future.

Is the news now an aesthetically-sculpted consumer product as well? <<<<

Yes. And why shouldn't it be? I've had it with the old paradigm of "objective reporting."

It Never Existed.

There has never, EVER been a completely objective, non-biased media in the annals of human history. That's not human nature, and we ignore human nature at our peril.

Whether it's slanted coverage, outright lies, or selective coverage, the choices made as to what gets reported, and how it's presented, if at all, is going to be made by someone with their own selfish interests in mind.

You just report the facts? Fuck you, liar.

I want informational completeness, but tailored to my biases.

343 That was some weak sauce from Dana Loesch. As part of their franchise
agreement, stores have to put up approved messages and not messages like

True which makes sense, but then,

As to what Wendy's corporate said, holy
shit that was some weak ass shit Loesch came up with. Some 22 year old
replied to her twitter, and because it wasn't in legalese, she takes it
as an attack on CFA.

When you have a controversy, your Official Corporate Twitter account should not address it or should reflect the head PR person. You are assuming the Twitter account is run by a 22-year-old. Maybe. Maybe not, but you don't address controversy there if that's the case.

This is why corporations have releases with legalese.

It sounds impressive, but with that kind of advantage how come the President’s not ahead 32 to one? Why is he even behind?
Maybe because most of that pathway is used to broadcast in one direction only, a high tech overpriced system for transmitting talking points. As a feedback mechanism it looks to be a bust. The President’s recent statement that the private sector economy is ‘doing just fine’ is an example of how well his digital network tells him nothing...."

Actually ... that is a good question. And there's no real answer to it. True randomness doesn't exist in the physical world. Not that we've ever experienced. Theory claims that true randomness can be found from quantum systems (and that quantum computation can provide the only actual random streams the physical world has ever offered) but ... I'm not exactly sold on that one.

We live in a world of order, so far as we have ever known. Randomness is impossible to harvest out of a totally ordered universe.

He didn't whine, he didn't make excuses. He did his job.

408 Actually, the L.A. Times' Rene Lynch gave pretty decent coverage of CFA Appreciation Day on Thursday.

Lately they've been doing more news and less boutique news. Such as actual critical coverage of the state's public pension abuse scandals.

The Editorial Staff is still a bunch of LibTard slime, but the paper ought to get credit for improving.

No sir, you asked for regular Universe and all regular Universe's come ordered.

Talk to the quantum computation guys. They claim that they will have unlimited, free perfect random number generators. I told them that this would likely violate the 2nd Law but no one took me seriously.

Of course, all of quantum theory depends on the idea of pure randomness existing and being physically realizable ... kind of like closed systems in standard physics, which all understand are nothing but approximations.

423 Theoretically, one could weigh the balls, accurately measure their volume and also the volume of the container and the coefficient of friction of the surface inside the container, measure the air flowing in and out, the size of the aperture for the balls and the atmospheric pressure in the room (taking into account the heat and airflow in the room) and come up with a prediction of which ball is more likely to appear.

Then again, maybe not.

426 Randomness is impossible to harvest out of a totally ordered universe.

Atomic decay. In any given group of radioactive atoms that have specific half life, its impossible to predict which one is going to decay next.

If the atoms are physically separated enough with stable material between them, then each one could be encapsulated with its own radiation detector to sense when it pops.

Don't observe the atom, observe the result of its decay. Decay is a one-way trip.

You seem like the moron to ask: what is the practical limit on energy transmission over the electrical infrastructure we have? Could we say, come up with a cheap and easy way to use arctic gas to generate electricity which gets piped south? Doesn't have to be a perfect superconductor, but the potential is there (pun intended) to use otherwise economically useless natural gas that is up there by the trillion cubic foot bucket. Now it seems that giant frickin' lasers can be used to transmit useful amounts of energy.
