If You Don't Buy Insurance, Will You Really Pay the Obamacare Tax?

It may be a tax per Roberts, but it's not a tax-tax per Congress.

So if you don't pay it, there's nothing the IRS can do except take it out of any refunds you're due.
Now that the Supreme Court has decided that ObamaCare's mandate to buy health insurance is a tax, will the IRS be able to collect it?

Generally speaking, if you owe the IRS, it will get the money from you-with the possible exception of the ObamaCare tax. Though ObamaCare's individual mandate imposes a tax on people who do not purchase government-approved health insurance, the law explicitly neuters the IRS's ability to collect the tax.
Finally, even if the IRS has determined that you owe the new tax, it has very limited ability to force you to pay it. Basically, the IRS has two options: To ask you for the money and to reduce the size of your tax refund. But the IRS cannot reduce your refund unless you overpay.

...Under ObamaCare, the IRS cannot seize any of your property to enforce the mandate penalty. The IRS cannot go after the money in your bank accounts, and it can't sell your car. It can't send you to jail, and it can't touch your stuff.

Congress has enacted a law that cannot be enforced.

Well that sure doesn't sound like the Congress *I* know.

The Olympics and Determining An Athlete's Sex

The more we learn about gene-driven biochemistry and hormones the murkier it gets. Which leads the IOC to keep moving the gender goalposts.

Here's the IOC's plan: Women who test in the male range for testosterone, and whose bodies respond to the hormone, may not be eligible to compete as females. "May not," because these women may also be allowed to lower their testosterone levels medically, as some say Semenya is now doing, though the IOC hasn't confirmed that. The committee does not specify what testosterone level is disqualifying, in part because individuals' measures can fluctuate. "We'll leave those decisions with the experts," Arne Ljungqvist, the chairman of the IOC's medical commission, told the New York Times.

On the other hand there are men who have testosterone levels in the female  range who won't be allowed to compete as females. And this rule would also exclude women with naturally high testosterone from the women's events. In the end I suspect that they'll eventually just go back to the chromosome test just to avoid the hard calls like Semenya.

The Design Margin

When all you've ever known is safety and plenty, it's easy to assume that it's the natural order.

The Design Margin is rooted in the notion that life is uncertain; that since things have often collapsed in the past and may collapse again we actually need to have more reserves than we think.

...The idea that the office on the corner will always be able to dispense Government Cheese does not reflect the normal historical experience. Rather it reflects that peculiar period of stability and prosperity which followed the end of the Second World War: the Pax Americana, which the Left hates. Our civilizational attitudes have been formed on the basis of the exception, not the rule.

But though they may hate the Pax Americana, the Greens probably can't live without it. Can't live without the Ipods, the connectivity, the store-bought food, the cafe-bought lattes - all the ugly things made by private industry. And by paring down the redundancies in the system as wasteful and unsightly; by reducing the energy reserves of the system in favor of such fairy schemes as windmills and carbon trading the Greens have made the system far less robust than it could have been. Because they are never going to need the Design Margin. Ever. Until they do.

But those who've seen the margin run out never forget.

Perhaps the old Jew knew something we have forgotten. That we are not safe because of some natural condition. We were safe for only so long as the Pax Americana endured. Remove that, undermine that, dismantle that - remove the Plug, the Store and the Station House - and all the bets were off.

How Old is Your Government?

It'd be interesting to scale these by mean lifespan as well, but I do believe there's an optimal zone where people are just old enough to have experience and wisdom but not so old that they lack energy or are unable to assimilate new information or ideas.

How Easy Is It To Fool The Media? This easy.

The Sad Truth About Bad Bulbs

Stephen Green is not happy with CFLs:

I was an early adopter of CFLs, but have since removed almost all of them from our house. Not because of reports like this one, or because of the potential for expensive cleanups after a broken one, or any of the other many problems the screwy little bulbs create.

No, I took them out because the light sucks. And also because they're too expensive, don't last as long as advertised, and therefore aren't any cheaper to run.

...CFLs broke a lot of promises.

This has been my experience with CFLs as well. I never liked their light, they're expensive and don't last as long claimed, and they have quirks (startup time, dimming, buzzing) that incandescents don't. All in all an inferior product. So I've been switching over to LEDs and high wattage-equivalent halogens if LEDs bulbs aren't available.

Madonna Stays Conventionally Transgressive

Well flattering the audience with "shock the squares" antics has taken Madonna pretty far but it could be running out of gas.

If you go see Madonna during her MDNA tour, there's at least two songs where she pretends to shoot the audience while the sound of gunfire rings out and shell casings and blood splatter across a giant LCD screen behind her.

Now, considering that scenario played out for real when 71 people were shot and 12 killed in Colorado on Friday, you might think she'd edit that out of her concert on Saturday. But you'd be wrong because Madonna is a cunt.

"Madonna would rather cancel her show than censor her art," a member of her tour staff told HuffPost's Rob Shuter. "Her entire career, she has fought against people telling her what she can and cannot do. She's not about to start listening to them now."

Oh but you can bet your ass she'll "censor her art" on October 18th when her tour goes to Denver, because Madonna is only controversial when it's completely safe to be that way.

Gore Vidal died today. Normally I would be inclined to say good, or say nothing.

Here goes. Vidal was nasty when William F. Buckley passed. Hateful actually. Bill happened to be in a now infamous debate with Vidal when he was called a crypto-nazi by the insufferable snob. Buckley promptly threatened to sock him in his goddamn face.

So Gore Vidal is dead. Well sofuckingwhat? What good did that pompous shit do anyone?

I have had a different experience with CFL's. I have one in my ceiling fan light in my bedroom. And its lasted much longer than the regular incandescents. I think for whatever reason that light would get a power surge and break the filament in the bulb. So I was replacing bulbs once a month every two months. With the CFL in there I haven't had to replace it in over a year.

Absolutely the right way to go...I know too many people who think of their tax return as "forced savings" and not as a free loan to the .gov asshats. I plan my withholding in the same way. The odd thing about the "forced savings" crowd is that when you ask them if they're grown up and mature enough to save on their own (and the folks I know all do), the question never seems to register.

First post is from my sanctimonious liberal sorority sister with a snarky "Being gay isn't a choice, but being a bigot is." status. For the record, I think twenty something Hooters girls are a bigger threat to most traditional marriages than two guys or gals making a lifetime commitment. However, when liberals are trying to make eating a chicken sandwich roughly equal to genocide, it pisses me off. She's naturally in favor of the contraceptive madate, which also pisses me off because we're both Catholic school teachers and will probably lose our health insurance if this isn't repealed. Of course, she'll blame the Catholic Church for not covering us anymore. Why should someone's birth control be free, when my blood pressure meds aren't? I guaran-damn-tee, that my health is just as important as someone's right to boink. Sorry for going off, but I've needed to get this out for a while. Please resume regular programming.

When I bought some years ago, I had to take the first batch back, some didn't work out of the box. Then I figured that their wattage equivalency metric sucked, so I got the higher wattage ones.

These have had a various lifespans, but now years later - there are only 2 left. The second last one broke apart in my hand as I tried to tighten it because it seated poorly and would go ouy at random times.

I hate CFL, and am replacing them with incandescent - I prefer their warmth and light and not-breaking-apart-in-my-handedness.

Also, if you want to grow herbs like basil, or oregeno indoors you have to use a cfl; incandescent won't work, in part because they get too hot.(FYI, tomatoes don't work unless they're in their infancy or you have a ton of light--enough to make it more expensive then buying fancy tomatoes).

It's because they use leaps of logic and get away with it. Support for
traditional marriage in their minds becomes hatred of gays. We have to make them explain the leap rather than just assert it.

"Cathy's support of traditional marriage says nothing about gay people. You are the one bringing gay people into a conversation that said nothing about gays. It's not about you. Are you so narcissistic that you have to make it about you, or so insecure about your point of view that you can't tolerate anyone else having a different opinion?

Actually my daughter is going through a gluten-free trial right now (you are the moron with the gluten intolerance, right?) and so I've been checking websites...CfA is actually pretty decent. She can have the grilled chicken nuggets and the waffle fries, because they use a separate fryer for the fries. So you could probably could have a grilled chicken salad, and fries, plus the fruit salads and the shakes are good.

If you have a peanut allergy, though, you're probably right; they use peanut oil in everything.

One thing to consider with the HadesCare tax thing. While the IRS may not be able to enforce and collect the tax, the tax "delinquency" would still be on the books, and that status can cause lots of problems. For example in many states, any tax delinquency is a disqualifying condition for a CCW license.

If you can trust everyone in a fast food restaurant to never mix up the baskets in the fryers, never fail to wash their hands and clean prep areas before handling your food.

Which you can't.

If you're actually gluten-intolerant, a *crumb* can screw up your day, and the longer you're off the stuff the stronger the reaction is.

McD's said for years their fries were always fried separately from the breaded stuff, but at the franchise level you were depending on rushed teenagers with the attention span of brine shrimp to do that, and it just wasn't happening.

I don't ever trust fast food and I almost never trust restaurants at all.

Fluorescent has always been known to be shitty light. I am amazed that the more information is available to people the less they seem to know. People didn't even dare to contradict themselves from one day to the next back when it took weeks for information to make its way around, but now when we can see their lies juxtaposed in two video clips th day they say them, they have no shame in doing it over and over.

This society has just sunk into the muck and decided that it liked the feeling. Affirmative action is what started it all out - blatant lies told that everyone knew were lies but everyone agreed to publicly ignore. From there, it was all over. Once a society starts accepting transparent lies by pretending they can't hear them, it's a direct path down the shitter from there.

I read this comment at The Ulsterman report: "A nicely dressed young man (Chick-fil-A employee) stood next to the drive-thru lane handing out voting registration forms. He asked, “Are you all set to vote this election?” and I gave him a thumbs up.
So, the lefties lost twice today–they signed up lots of conservatives to vote, and they blessed a conservative business with an overload of customers!"

CFL's and Fluorecents are colder and bluer which I hate.

I have CFL's in areas where it makes sense, places where human don't dwell very long like the basement in closets, etc.

In theory CFLs should last longer than Incandescents and for the most part they do but their performance tends to degrade so why bother when I can get a pack of 8 for $2.00

Even that isn't true, though. Incandescents run on DC and not turned off last for years and years and years. They used to sell little button capacitors (or whatever) to put under incandescent bulbs that would allow them to last for years.

A) Quality of the CFL
B) Quality of the fixture
C) Quality of your wiring
D) Quality of the power coming to it.

265 I was an early adopter of CFLs as well, and they did make a significant dent in our electric bill right away. They were great in our little 900 SF cottage with the 8-ft. ceilings and the old, open ceiling fixtures.

Then we moved to a 3000 SF Victorian with 10-ft ceilings on the first floor. It has all-new fixtures, closed as is the current fashion. CFLs suck here. Not only does the light from them not project far enough, but they overheat and blow out in closed fixtures.

I do use CFLs in the garage and basement, however: daylight-spectrum, high-wattage (100+W) bulbs in open porcelain fixtures. Those bulbs are awesome.

Years ago there was a lovely movie called "Memphis Belle" about World War II planes and pilots. My dad worked on planes in the air force during WWII, so I bought my elderly parents movie tickets for a gift and kept pushing them to see that movie.

Well, kids, they went to see "Silence of the Lambs".
Oh, I know what their thinking was on that movie.

309 The thing about Robert's ruling is that it makes so little sense that no one knows how to act or what to think.

When you start saying that perfectly good English words such as tax and mandate, each with their own distinct meanings "can be reasonably read" as being each other then there is NOTHING left you can hang your hat on or be sure about.

Roberts could read an IRS fine to mean a good buggering so who wants to be the first to taunt the IRS? Who thinks for a second that no matter what the law says you won't end up wearing thumbscrews?

What does the text of a law have to do with anything?

Mongrel Nation - a three part documentary he hosted. It was pretty good as a sort of fast food of educational TV. You can find it on most good torrent sites.

James May, one of the UK Top Gear hosts, did a short series called Things You Ought To Know which was also a good bit of educational fluff.

This is 9 pm at night in Long Beach, CA, not home of the most conservative people on earth. The drive through was backed up a half-mile, and the line to get food ran out the door, across the parking lot, down past the theater, and up into the Barnes and Noble.

Wow.

Being a lazy-assed bastard, I went and got something from Carl's JR, instead. I will eat there tomorrow and Friday in recompense.

Because most fast food chains have on their bargain menu a 'spicy chicken' sandwich which is better labeled horrible crap you'd never want to eat if you could actually taste anything but the spices.

It's one area where McDonalds is markedly superior, although they do the same in some regions like Las Vegas. Where I live the McChicken for a buck is far better than any of the bargain competitors.

I suspect CFA didn't want to be associated with that sordid fast food practice.

Let me preface this with "I don't really care what you do in your bedroom, if you want to get married, I don't care". That's your business, not MINE.

That said, the Chick-Fil-A support today struck me not as intolerance for gays, but intolerance for fascism.

While I've known many gays who are good people, I've also known a fair share who are total assholes. Too many in leadership positions are creating the "It's a Good Life" kind of environment, you must say "it's GOOOOD that you did that", and "think only good thoughts, or you will be ruined with the armed force of the mega government".

If you want to get angry at a company, get angry at GM for making shitty cars and then forcing the taxpayer to cover their incompetence. Get angry at big banks who profited from incompetence AND corruption, and partnered with the powerful in both parties to cover their bets, who privatized their profits and socialized their losses.

Don't get angry at a company because their CEO spoke the same beliefs held by Barack Obama until 2 months ago, or by the majority of muslims, blacks, and hispanics as well as Christians

Stop cheering on government intrusion into property, lifestyles, beliefs, and thoughts just because you don't like someone because it really sucks when they come after yours. And some day they will come after something YOU like. Control freaks are funny that way

I almost never watch politicians. I read what they said.

I won't say they all do this, but damned near everyone at the top is a professional Con-Man.

That's one of the things I liked about Bush Jr. He may have screwed a lot of things up, but he wasn't a Con-Man.

You can search online for "Obama NLP." Beware that a number of the links are douchebaggy or dumb, always check your sources.

The same goes for most politicians, though for some of them it's a "knack" learned through experience and not trained, and for some it's just from one book or minor training.

You know, "How to be a Complete Manipulative Bastard in Ten Easy Steps."

The thing about Obama that I think is funny is that I think his handlers got started on this early, and he developed some really bad habits as a result - why a lot of people see him as creepy and lazy and uninterested in America, our values, and people in general.

377 I think you're coolio-mc cool chemjeff. But you're right, it has changed alot- in many ways become much more intolerant of divergence, much more of an echo-chamber-type environment than it used to be, in my observation. I've been here about 9 years and I've been somewhat disappointed about that- still, tho much is taken much abides... really no place like it on the web. It would be a loss and I'd be disappointed if you weren't here, but don't take that wrong.

I buried both my parents recently after long illnesses and let me tell you I haven't felt this good since they were in their 60's. It's unbelieveable how stress crushes your heart and your health. 442 I agree that people are a lot more on edge; it doesn't take much to push people over the "WELL F*CK YOU TOO" line these days. I know I feel it in me too, something I have to fight because I can get really, really mean and brutal. Its one of the drawbacks of being a writer.

I used to rip people up so bad they hated me personally and threatened to come to my house and kill me. Not in a ha ha way, I was just a dick. It didn't do anyone any good, nobody was convinced of anything and as a Christian I'm supposed to be glorifying God, not ranting on everything. When I read someone say they like God OK but His followers mess everything up I can't help but nod and hang my head.

That said, I wish people would relax a bit. You can say something somewhat controversial or different than the norm at a comment board and you'll get instantly attacked, called "concern troll" abused, and people will begin to personally assault you for believing something they don't care for.

Supposedly we're all on the same side here, right? I mean, just because you might say something I find wrong or off base doesn't mean you're a monster.

456 There's a shared sense of foreboding I think everyone feels, and people more keyed into economics and politics feel it worse. I cannot personally shake the feeling that its all over, that we had a nice run and civilization is starting one of those time periods where things run backward. It happens once in a while, its why we didn't ram straight forward from Chaldea to martian colonies in a thousand years.

War, famine, pestilence, all sorts of catastrophes used to come along and run the clock back until another civilization pushed forward and it happened again. Since the Black Plague we've not really had that happen. Its been a hell of a run but could it really go forever?

And I think more people than me sense that in the back of their heads. So we're all a bit more touchy and angry than we used to be. Combine that with the deliberate, systematic antagonism of the left's Alinskyite techniques, and their irrational postmodernist philosophy and its like being in an asylum and wondering if maybe you're really the insane one.

If it weren't for my faith and the end of the Bible, I'd give up all hope. I don't see this turning out well no matter who is president, but we gotta all keep fighting anyway. Because the purpose of fighting isn't to win. Its to fight for what's right.

Although I approve and encourage supporting the restaurant today (the local one was swamped at 7pm, so I missed out), I wish that the protest, such a it is, were more focused on the tyrants who attempted to silence Cathy. Rahm et al. should have been run out of town by now. The fact he (they) will remain in any position of authority tomorrow is very discouraging.

Of course, I'm inclined to run the whole political class out of town on a rail (literally). Every.God-damned.one.of.them. I wish that the ruling class understood that they are on borrowed time.

487 "Seems like we're in opposite-land- the "compassionate" are utter tyrants and the "tolerant" are calling in bomb threats. Being "rational" means being entirely credulous about a million preposterous fantasies."

I think that's part and parcel of the postmodern culture. Reason and logic are rejected for emotion and contradiction. Its a sort of Mad Hatter's Tea Party but people are deadly serious about it. Reason and logic lead one the exact opposite direction the left wants to go, so they just abandoned it all as a failure.

Now they have rejected all three of the basic laws of rhetoric, so you can hold two contradictory concepts in your head at the same time and context without any conflict at all. Yes, I believe in survival of the fittest AND that we should save that beached whale. Yes I believe that killing people is wrong but we should kill unborn helpless babies. It goes on and on.

And the most insane thing is that they'll look you right in the eye and say something you both know is completely false, without batting an eyelash. Something even contradicting what they asserted moments ago.

I've had it happen to me several times, I will finally get a leftist to admit something then just a day or two later, they're back to their previous position as if they never agreed with me.

I don't know, maybe the world has always been like this and I've just gotten a lot more sensitive to it. I used to find M*A*S*H hilarious and now I just cannot stand it.

I'd argue a slightly different take.

Something happened in Europe not long after the Black Plague that changed society to *strongly* encourage virtues that strengthen society and condemn vices that weaken it.

Specifically a combination of Protestant ethics and European power politics where there were many competing powers.

If people believe that hard work is a virtue, and government understands that bad choices will haunt those in government personally - you get a very strong society.

These values have been dying since the rise of progressivism though.

Liberals don't have positions in the sense you and I do.

They have a goal. Acquire more power for the left. If embracing pacifism advances that, pacifism is the greatest good. If a couple of years later their dear leader is executing terrorists (and their families) by missile now that is good.

If Romney wins, executing terrorists will likely become evil again (though it will depend on just how far a freed Romney goes left).

Posted by: 18-1 at August 02, 2012 01:44 AM (AUeaU)

502 The only real comfort I can manage is the knowledge that things have been much, much worse and more bleak looking in the past. During WW2, particularly at first, Germany seemed unbeatable, the world was a very dark and scary place, and civilization looked doomed. During the late 60s and early 70s it looked like America could not hold its self together, that we were tearing apart at the seams and the nation was doomed.

Except back then, we still had that cultural fabric, that protestant work ethic and the basic Judeo-Christian worldview in place, yet. Its all but gone now. Its not the things outside us that destroy us, its what is within, like a cancer. Barbarians didn't destroy Rome. They invaded an already destroyed nation.

If you've read Atlas Shrugs you know the parable she tells of that huge oak that rotted out from within.

It's great to see people like Jim Treacher, Iowahawk, and Baldilocks stop by -- and was awesome when Breitbart would have AoS on his screen.....but it's the folks who are here most of the time who make it the sort of place that it is. Even if they have their "things" -- Steevy's reminder, Robert's heavy-metal fixation, Monty's DOOM, machines for sale.....it's a community, and not even Ace himself can be as good as the whole crowd together.

And that said, the number of folks I'd like to see "voted off the island" is excruciatingly small.....as in, I can think of only one litterbox-scented one at the moment.

521 It is evil. For those who aren't Christians this might sound mad but the entire story of history is a fight between two seeds: the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. There are just two sides, and which one you're on makes all the difference. There is a horrible evil in a culture that celebrates corruption and lies and condemns nobility and virtue.

The good wins, in the end. But like Tolkien points out in the Lord of the Rings... it is a long, hard road before you get there. Frodo had to walk into Mordor, not be flown in comfortably, because it was a metaphor for life on this earth.

Speaking truth about Obama's policies is 'racist',there is no diversity in the political orientation of college professors, and belief in the 2nd amendment and a desire for limited, enumerated gov't is a terrorist indicator to DHS. Again, conservatives think liberals are misguided, liberals think conservatives are evil monsters. I just hate that

One time, I was out with a gf who was an accountant, and we stopped in at a client of hers that was a cabaret with a TS/TV floor show. Had a thoroughly good time -- of course, I knew who I was going home with....anyway, after the show, she went off to powder her nose and came back seriously green around the gills. When we were halfway back to her place she told me why: "they were comparing vaginas in there -- one of them said, 'oh, that's a very pretty one,' and the other replied, 'it should be, it cost me $3,000!'"

Little multimedia player box. Lets you do streaming services like Netflix or Hulu without the high cost of a game console like the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. The game console is far more versatile in most respects but both sony and Microsoft have this annoying refusal to include the support for MKV files, which is a very popular format for video files. It's especially useful for material derived from DVD or Blu-ray because it can incorporate a lot of features such as multiple audio and subtitle tracks.

Technically, it's a wrapper, not a video or audio format in of itself. It can contain any of a wide variety of those. It is the wrapper structure that provides the advanced features I mentioned.

Nearly all of the little dedicated network/USB boxes and most decent Blu-ray decks will play MKV files. It is the big glaring deficit of the game consoles for non-gaming use.

Just catching up with the thread. There sure was a lot of DOOM and angst earlier. The modified versus installed discussion lightened things up nicely.

As for the DOOM, there is HOPE. My beloved and I both hail from enormous clans of almost exclusively blue collar democrats. Every single one of them is disgusted and even the activist types are loudly complaining about the mess and claiming they are sitting out the next election.

Here in the Mogadishu of America formerly known as the Motor City, the failure of the socialists is so blatant that even multi-generational democrats can see it.

I have four kids between 13 and 25 and they and their friends are so much more politically aware than my generation it amazes me. They have a few naive ideas but for the most part see their futures being stolen by the collusion of Big Government, Wall Street, and Academia. Take heart, all is not lost ... YET.

WD has their own streaming box called WD TV Live which is king with a ton of features and ease of throwing it onto a network. Can even drop an extra $100 for a box with a 1tb HD on it.
D-Link partnered up with Boxee which is akin to XBMC to create their own streaming box which has slightly more stuff than Roku and is popular in Asia (GOMTV has their own channel)

630 MKV files are like the Linux of video formats.

I just curse when I run into one. I have to convert it to make it work on devices and people like to use really odd encoder settings.

I'd bet some companies are trying to avoid support for it for the piracy, but for me it's just an annoyance to have to find another source or convert the damned things.

I see way too many people falling into the "one will save me from the other" trap, almost exclusively the "government will save me from the corporations" trap.

I keep asking them how many corporations have armies and courts, but it has zero effect, it's "evil Wall Street will get me in my sleep!"

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 02, 2012 03:13 AM (bxiXv)

YES and it infuriates me to no end. so I point out "really? so governmetn has the power to throw you in jail but no corporation has the power, not even the biggest baddest one.." and they always respond with some tripe about how corporations are somehow worse even though it's demonstrably false.

They simply have a faith in government conquering the evil corporation, there really isn't another way to describe it.

They shop at WalMart (or HyVee, or PigglyWiggly, or wherever) and they *think* they are getting ripped off, and they think they have no choice but to shop there and get ripped off. So they harbor hatred against the store. They have no idea that they can shop ANYWHERE ELSE and get a different deal and they won't get ripped off.

Posted by: chemjeff at August 02, 2012 03:19 AM (d/5qf)

644 Usually the "evil corporations" talk turns to them "corrupting" government.

I point out government is taking protection money from the corporations, not being corrupted by them. The corporate heads do it for protection, otherwise the government will favor someone else instead. Look at all the paybacks Obama gives to donors.

You have to cut off the source of the problem - the system of patronage.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 02, 2012 03:21 AM (bxiXv)

The naive ideas I am seeing are more about the magic power of social media to effect change and so forth. The young ones I am talking to have seen through that evil corporation bullshit because they like their technology too much and know that Mom and Pop shops do not create smart phones and tablets and CGI movies of their favorite stories. That's analog RF. You would need to buy a converter with an RF modulator, or you'd need to buy a converter *and* an RF modulator (which you can buy at radio shack for not much).

Buy a new TV.

If it only has coax inputs it probably can't handle the signal anyway.

A converter box would cost more than a TV.

You might be able to get a DVD player cheap that can take HD input and put signal out to Coax. If you could that would be the cheapest way.

An older HTPC video card might do it, but probably not, no one's used coax for that since kids knew who Carrot Top was.

Is there anyone, ANYONE, in the US that hasn't figured out that when government says "comprehensive XXXX reform", they mean that they'll take a square of chocolate and mix it into a pound of dogshit and then say "take a teaspoon -- you'll taste chocolate"?

Comprehensive healthcare reform, comprehensive immigration reform, comprehensive banking reform, comprehensive tax reform....it's not that you couldn't do incremental reform with the obvious chocolate items and maybe reassess in a bit......noooooooo, you've got to get every BS statist wetdream shoved down your throat if you'll receive any benefit at all. You can't get ANY chocolate unless you take your full dose of dogshit.

It's like ringing Pavlov's bell for me. "Comprehensive XXXX reform" means I'm not going to like it -- even a little bit. And it's going to raise my blood pressure even just talking about it.

I have a similar setup, using a cable card and tuning adapter on a TiVo. My sister and I both have cable tuners in our PCs but without cable card support. I haven't bothered with it for quite a long time, as I've got such a massive backlog of torrented stuff to watch.

This Freezing series is pretty twisted. If the gender roles were reversed it would be regarded as intensely misogynistic but having the girls fight titanic bloody battles over the boys somehow is less brutal.

680 If he had component video from the PC he could run it into a VCR.
Posted by: Ace's liver at August 02, 2012 03:37 AM (1+XRG)

Technically component video is 3-channel video, and I don't think we want to open that can of worms.

Wild guess you're thinking of composite video, one video and two audio channels. Or S-video, which is not uncommon on video cards.

WD-TV has composite video outs so a modulator would work with that.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 02, 2012 03:44 AM (bxiXv)

681 Jaysus, Jeff. You have composite and S-video inputs. No worries, hook up your WD-TV and get to fappin'!

683 so WD-TV will work with my TV?

Posted by: chemjeff at August 02, 2012 03:46 AM (d/5qf)

684 Okay, so if he has composite video the best thing would be to find an old VCR and use that as a modulator.

WD-TV --> VCR --> TV

Or he could go down to Radio Shack and buy a modulator for something like $20.

Easiest answer is a new TV with HDMI native but I do not replace until forced to so I understand.

Some DVD players have HDMI and component video (red white yellow jacks). Mst modern home computer have an HDMI port. Perhaps HDMI from PC to DVD and component video from DVD to TV would git'r'dun.

I'm fine with MKV files. They do a lot of stuff I like that. It's the resistance from Sony and Microsoft that is the only drawback. If I got a newer Intel system with QuickSync on the processor, I could transcode in real-time and pass the output over the network to the game consoles. But for a good bit less money I could replace the DVD player in the living room entertainment center with a Blu-ray deck that speaks both MKV and DLNA. I already have a router that acts as a DLNA server for any USB drive plugged into it.

Virtually everything else Sony makes that plays digital video files supports MKV. The Blu-ray decks, their competitor for the Roku type devices, etc. It's only the part of the company that controls the PS3, what used to be known as SCEA, that has a problem with letting people do what they want.

A lot of the streaming services are using an encrypted form of MKV.

690
Ideo? Yikes.

Posted by: Grumpy the Younger at August 02, 2012 03:52 AM (jts1f)

691 So if what Merovign is saying is true, you just need a cable that starts at your WD-TV card and ends up with three RCA jacks - video, left audio, and right audio. Plug those into the VCR and then plug a coax cable from the VCR to the TV.

Posted by: Ace's liver at August 02, 2012 03:52 AM (1+XRG)

692 Well then I will try the WD-TV and hooking it up to the VCR thru the DVD player or whatever.

anyway good night all I think I am soused already

I'm sorry if 681 was unclear. You thought you had a problem, you do not.

All you need is the WD-TV, cheap RCA cables, and a USB drive with videos on it.

WD-TV has composite video out so you should be good to go ... http://tinyurl.com/brrmy2n

As long as you can get on the Inernet via Ethernet or Wi Fi.

Posted by: Grumpy the Younger at August 02, 2012 04:01 AM (jts1f)

705 You can get an RF adapter to use a PS3 or Xbox 360 with an old CRT. It's a pretty severe constraint on what they're meant to do but it will work and let you play most video file formats except the discussed MKV.

There are plenty of good free utilities for transcoding to a compatible format. It can be very slow on an older PC but if you set it to do a batch before you leave for work or whatever, you can avoid the watched pot syndrome.

The support for streaming services is regarded as better on the Xbox but the PS3 has the advantage of including Blu-ray playback, which will be nice to have when you finlly get a more modern TV.

Price is the biggest issue. You can get a refurb Xbox 360 with 4 GB flash memory and no hard drive for $150. PS3 runs a bit higher but there has been indications Sony intends to introduce a lower cost model with a manual door for the optical drive instead of an autoslot.

707 "okay wait, will I have to buy a brand new computer to use the WD-TV? I thought it was its own system"

Okay, according to the owner's manual:

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705062.pdf

You just hook it up to your home network (wired or wireless). It comes with a composite video cable. So all you need is that VCR plus an ethernet cable if you aren't going wireless.
