This class warfare bullshit they were (and are) pisses me off. Oooh, Mitt Romney has money! You know who else does? Literally every politician ever. Could it be that Barry doesn't want to release his tax records because he's really deluded enough to think that people believe he's an everyman? That they'd suddenly discover that he has money? Give me a break.

Kinda OT: John Kerry bawls out Romney for insulting our allies:
"Our friendship with Great Britain and close ties with the other NATO nations is a cornerstone of our national security policy. That is why I am concerned when I see actions by politicians that threaten the bipartisan relationship that we and our British friends have forged through all those years of shared sacrifice. We cannot afford to go back to the go-it-alone policy of the recent past. Nor can we adopt the isolationist tendencies that some now call for during this time of both global crisis and opportunity. We need our friends more than ever as we try to shape a future that is worthy of our historic past.... Unfortunately, Governor Romney is taking a precarious path with respect to our relations with Great Britain and our other European allies. His rhetoric suggests that he would ignore the counsel of our friends around the world. On the key issues of our time, Gov. Romney would split the partnership that this administration, and others before it, worked so hard to build." First of all, you didn't build that. Second, Obama is well known for respecting our British allies so the Democrats have all kinds of room to complain. Posted by: WalrusRex at July 30, 2012 12:02 PM (Hx5uv) 105

Of course. It teaches so many things that you can't get elsewhere. One is that, with a few assumptions, you can reach rigorous logical conclusions. President Obama returns to Manhattan Monday for a fundraising blitz.
Obama is scheduled to arrive around 4:30 p.m. and travel through NYC at the height of Monday evening's rush hour and is set to leave at 9:30 p.m. He arrives at JFK airport then travels to the Wall St. helipad and will likely take the FDR Drive north. Expect the FDR to be closed both ways south of 42nd St. just in time for the evening rush. It will be frozen south of 42nd St. some time after 8:30 p.m. All avenues will be frozen at 23rd St., according to 'Gridlock' Sam Schwartz, a transit expert. The Commander in Chief is expected to attend a fundraiser at NoMad hotel on Broadway at 28th St. Some 60 people reportedly paid $40,000 to attend the dinner. OSP - This is a very interesting race because Perry is on the opposite side of Palin. Very odd. It will further weaken his support in Texas which has never been that strong. This could be a huge win for Palin and DeMint who would rightfully get a lot of credit. It would also be a big win for the Tea Party, but I suspect many at the national level will try to dismiss it because it is Texas. But I think the NRO editorial was spot on today. There is no reason Texas (or SC, Utah, or IN) shouldn't have a very conservative sentator.

Panetta says sanctions haven't yet worked in Iran Published: 07.30.12, 19:23 / Israel News US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is acknowledging that international sanctions have not achieved their aim of compelling Iran to rein in its nuclear ambitions. He said Monday that sanctions are hurting Iran's economy. And he said that although the "results are not obvious at the moment," Iran has at least expressed a willingness recently to engage in nuclear negotiations. (Reuters) ??? I've often wondered why Perry supported Dewhurst. Yes, he wanted to keep Dewhurst on his side, because Dewhurst controls legislation. But that was a short-term play. I find it hard to believe that Perry will run for another term as govenor. If he does, he should be primaried, and could easily lose.
IMO, it would have been better for him to back Cruz, allow Cruz to win, and to have some political capital within in the growing Tea Party movement. Perhaps it could set him up for 2016 if Mitt doesn't win. This election represents a pretty seismic shift in Texas politics. Posted by: SH at July 30, 2012 12:38 PM (gmeXX) 221

@231 - No. I suspect that if Perry doesn't retire, then Abbot will finally just run against him. Perry will have lost a lot of political capital in the state and worn out his welcome. Its time to make way for new blood. The Perry/Dewhurst team hasn't been all bad. Texas has done pretty well under their watch. But their time is over. There is a new breed of conservatism out there ready to make their mark. Perry could have embraced this new breed - which he did. But backing Dewhurst (even on the nominal scale in which he did) as a follow up to his disastrous campaign for the nomination will leave him a pretty wounded politician.
I find this a very interesting time in US politics. The rising of Generation X. Posted by: SH at July 30, 2012 12:49 PM (gmeXX) 245

"Good point - Putin at least puts out pictures of himself, shirtless in

I particularly enjoyed the photos of Putin harpooning killer whales with live narwhales. And the ones where he thumb wrestled a giant mountain gorilla. Best comment on math ever, from a former student's mother, was when she told me he deserved a better grade because "he clearly understood the concept, he just made errors when he calculated the problems". Newsweek and its ilk are going all-out to carry their limp-wristed AA model Charlie McCarthy hero over the finish line in first place. And then, they are going to go out of business. Of course, they are going to go out of business whether Obama wins or loses, but with him in office, there will be a whole lot more cushy PR/spokesperson/official flack jobs to choose from! Gotta keep your eye on what's best for the American people!

I took a second look at the Newsweek cover and suddenly it hit me ... they're playing games. That picture of Mitt is decidedly non-wimpy. He looks great, laughing at a good joke. Compare to Ace's wimp cover of The One on The Bike. Now that's wimpy.
So what gives? Why didn't Newsweek drum up a wimpier photo? There's got to be something they could've used. Heck, even I look wimpy for two or three second out of the day. My conclusion: it's another in a growing list of signs that the MSM is now actually leaning towards Romney. Campbell Brown went full out that way. I am convinced the MSM doesn't find Romney that objectionable. Some even like him. And while they don't quite know what to do with the gooey candy they hold in their hands (read: Obama), they are starting to wonder if maybe, just maybe, there's a way to wash it off without being a Bad Person. Really, the photo is not what it should've been, if Newsweek really dislikes Mitt. Posted by: MaxMBJ at July 30, 2012 01:24 PM (deaac) 266

I agree that he should, but I don't think that Perry will retire. He will run again, and will force the state to make the ugly choice of primarying him.
And it will be ugly. I'm still not entirely certain that the Beck attack on Medina was NOT a favor called in by Perry. She was polling "only" 24% at the time, but she was gaining traction. Perry will not bow out gracefully. He will run again, and will attack with vigor any primary challengers. I remember Perry's attacks on KayBee and Medina a lot more than I remember his attacks on White once the general got underway. I was sorta hoping that Perry would have gotten the Republican nod for President. First, he would make a very decent President. Second, promoting "up" and "away" is really the only graceful way that Texas would have gotten him out of Austin. He's been a good governor, but it's time to go. Hopefully I'm wrong, and he will pick a graceful and honorable path out of the way, for some new ideas and some fresh minds to take his place next time around. In the meantime, I'm hoping that my neck of the woods will get rid of Wendy Davis this time around. It would not be hard to tie her to PP, which is truth, and if that is done effectively, then her days are numbered. Posted by: reason at July 30, 2012 01:30 PM (F26eZ) 268
