| Overnight Open Thread![]() Amish Rising Hmmmm. I wonder if Obamatax will increase this rate? Amish Population Booms In U.S.A new Amish settlement is founded in the United States nearly once a month, according to a new census, which also found that more than 60 percent of all existing Amish communities sprang up after 1990. "The Amish are one of the fastest-growing religious groups in North America," Ohio State researcher Joseph Donnermeyer, who led the census project, said in a statement. "They're doubling their population about every 21 to 22 years, primarily because they produce large families and the vast majority of daughters and sons remain in the community as adults baptized into the faith, starting their own families and sustaining their religious beliefs and practices."Die Hard 5 I'm starting to think this director does not understand some of the draw to the Die Hard flicks. Fifth 'Die Hard' Will Be Even More Joyless Than You Thought. Um, what's the point of calling it Die Hard if you're not gonna have wisecracks or McClanisms? Here's a video of John McClane's best lines. ![]() NHTSA said it estimates 7,630 people died in vehicle crashes in the first three months, up from 6,720 in the first quarter of 2011. The increase would end a steady decline in U.S. road deaths over the last seven years. Obviously, we must ban fully automatic vehicles. Navy Green Fleet Navy: We'll Never, Ever Overpay For Biofuels. Um, bullshit. You already are. Prohibiting the DoD from pursuing cost-competitive alternatives severely limits our ability to reduce reliance on fossil fuels sourced from outwardly hostile parts of the world. It is a policy position that is bad for energy security and bad for national security. As we continue the debate in Congress and across the nation about America’s energy future, let’s pursue all the options that can achieve greater energy security for our country, and not allow the conversation to be sidetracked by oversimplifying or misstating the facts. Funny, no mention of tapping our domestic potential. And it would be cheaper and more beneficial to the economy than chasing the green biofuel boondoggle. War On Drugs ![]() ![]() Comments1

Freak'n Amish are the biggest tax cheats and misers out there. Jews got a bad name for being cheap but they pale in comparison to the Amish. Everyone of their houses they call a church so they don't pay property taxes on that, take up all the roads with their horse and buggies, don't pay any license fees and when they can't use their horses they bum rides from their neighbors and never chip in for gas. Same with phones and most everything else, they just use other peoples stuff.

The 6 KNOWN Jihadi groups fighting Assad in Syria.Yeah John Mac,let's get in there!!
Via Bill Roggio: Al Qaeda in Iraq has long had a strong presence in Syria, with the assistance of the Assad regime. The terror group has used Syria to recruit, train, and arm fighters to wage jihad. Syria also has served as a transit point for foreign jihadists entering Iraq. The Al Nusrah Front has claimed credit for numerous suicide attacks, roadside bombings, ambushes, and complex assaults against security forces and government installations. Al Nusrah has been very active in Syria and has been linked to al Qaeda. The Abdullah Azzam Brigades has a presence throughout the Middle East, including Syria, and was formed at the behest of al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi and al Qaeda emir Osama bin Laden. At the end of June, Majid bin Muhammad al Majid, the group’s emir, said that Syrians should support the uprising against the Assad regime, and that further rebellions against Muslim governments would follow. The Al Baraa Ibn Malik Martyrdom Brigade, which is named after a suicide cell that joined al Qaeda in Iraq in 2005, said it had formed a martyrdom battalion and was prepared to carry out suicide attacks against Syrian forces. The Liwa al Islam, or Brigade of Islam, took credit for the attack that killed the top two Syrian defense officials and Assad’s national security advisor. The Free Syrian Army also claimed credit for the attack, and both groups said it was carried out by a remotely detonated bomb, but the Syrian government maintained it was a suicide attack. The Omar al Farouq Brigade includes Turkish “mujahideen” and is named after a prominent al Qaeda leader who was slain in Iraq in 2006. The group has implored Muslims to “fight together to save Syria, Somalia and Afghanistan.” Posted by: steevy at July 28, 2012 10:08 PM (6o4Fb) 42

Only a disgraced public figure would consider joining the much-maligned ranks of the federal workforce as a step up, reputation-wise. We can assume there were no openings for a used-car salesman.
Spanier was faulted in an internal Penn State report after the conviction on child-molestation charges of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. The report said he, head coach Joe Paterno and others helped cover up Sandusky’s abuse. His lawyer confirms to the Loop that Spanier is working on a part-time consulting basis for a “top-secret” agency on national security issues. But the gig is so hush-hush, he couldn’t even tell his attorneys the name of the agency. In April — months after his ouster as president but before the release of the internal report — he told the Patriot-News of central Pennsylvania that he was working on a “special project for the U.S. government relating [to] national security.” But who’s he working for? The CIA? Homeland Security? Or maybe just a dull consulting firm with a government contract? “I have no idea,”says his lawyer, Peter Vaira. “We know the work is in security and he’s prohibited from disclosing which agency or agencies he’s working for.” After the internal report was released, Spanier complained in a statement from his attorneys that the document didn’t make mention of his government clearance — something he apparently thought was evidence of his trustworthiness. He noted that his security clearance (which he apparently had first obtained while at Penn State) “required a re-review when the Sandusky matter surfaced in November” and that federal investigators conducted their own probe of his role in the Sandusky scandal. The federal investigation ended with his security clearance being “reaffirmed,” the statement read. I can’t think of anything clever to say about that except that it makes me ill. So I was listening to the goddamned NPR station and that goddamned program "Fresh Air" was on, hosted by that goddamned idiot lady Terry Gross. She was doing a goddamned interview with Aaron Sorkin about his goddamned new show The Newsroom -- you know, the one where Aaron Sorkin's goddamned sockpuppet character retroactively wins every goddamned political argument Aaron Sorkin has gotten into over the past decade.
Anyway, one example of how goddamned smart and clever the show is was a goddamned clip they played where the goddamned sockpuppet character says something clever like "I'm a Republican, but I know hurricanes are caused by increased barometric pressure and not gay marriage." Anybody see what's wrong with that? Hurricanes are caused by LOW pressure. But goddamned Aaron Sorkin who is smarter than all us dumb conservatives didn't know that. Aaron Sorkin's legion of goddamned ass-kissing interns and production assistants didn't know that. Terry Fucking Gross and all the goddamned smart people at NPR didn't know that. I had a creepy experience involving the Amish a few years ago. I was driving from where I live out to the Midwest, and by about 11 p.m. I was west of Columbus, Ohio, looking for a place to sleep. I got off at some exit, slept about six hours, and woke early, unable to get back to sleep. Fortunately, there was a huge Amish restaurant just up the road from the motel, open at the crack of dawn. So I checked out, ate a huge and delicious breakfast, and drove on my way.
On the return trip I tried to find it again. No luck. I've made a couple more trips through there. Still no luck. I spent a couple of hours using Google, trying to find where I stayed and ate breakfast. No luck. Submitted for your approval: a tired motorist finds the perfect Amish restaurant, but can never find it again. They close up early . . . in the Twilight Zone. This is where the problem is. A very large majority of current SSDI recipients can be made to work. Open up unskilled jobs by requiring verification of employment eligibility, and then give the current recipients a choice: work, and get to live indoors and eat human food ... or not. Allow them to become, well, zombies, and very many may be unable. Then there are the social issues: their dependents, and subsequent generations. I've seen, in person for months at a time, the poverty of the Third World. In high school gym, you can fake just about everything with effort-- not gymnastics. You still had to jump on the idiotic pommel horse, praying you wouldn't ruin your sex life before it began by crushing your nuts on those handles... the rings were pointless if you couldn't pull yourself up... you could get up n the parallel bars, but then what?
But the worst was the rope climb. they had these ropes strung 40 feet above the gym floor. Guys would shoot up in about 10 seconds with a pencil in their mouth and sign the girder. I remember you got an A ifyou made it all the way up without feet, a B if you made it without feet, and a C - my group- if you made it half way up. thankfully, they discontinued the ropes when kids started falling 30 feet onto the wrestling mat they'd dragged under. Posted by: robtr Rum Liberation Front at July 28, 2012 10:55 PM (MtwBb) ----------------------------------------- Actually, you can. You either have a tendency toward addiction (which can lead you to develop addictions to pron, caffeine, gambling, damn near anything that messes with levels of dopamine) or you don't. It's not *totally* black and white; I'm not saying that if one has a genetic tendency he's screwed, and that no one without family history of addiction could ever develop one, but addiction is much, much more about the addict than the substance. Take pain meds---lots and lots of people use pain medications, strong ones like oxy-contin, on and off for years at a time (like while going through multiple surgeries after a bad accident, or during cancer treatments) and never develop addiction problems. Even children and adolescents can do that, for the most part. On the other end of the spectrum, there are those who get one script for Lortab after getting a tooth pulled and go bonkers. Really, how so?
Ethanol is has strong potential for abuse and is corruptive of good behavior. Shouldn't we ban it then? For much the same reason robtr made in #136. Most people can drink one drink and not become alcoholics, many many people smoke up once and become crackheads. The degree of addictive-ness between the two chemical families makes the comparison of booze and crack/meth/etc an apple to orange kind of thing. My gut feeling tells me that if something is allowed, very many people will do it, and if it is not allowed, many, maybe most, won't. Some people will become drug zombies, no matter what. That's probably unavoidable. But minimizing this number seems like a very good idea. There are differences between alcohol and the other drugs. One is that we are very familiar with the effects of alcohol, at least the bad effects. Alcohol, beer, wine, has been in Western Civilization for perhaps 2000 years, hard liquor maybe a few hundred. We have experience, and know what happens. We do not have the same knowledge base for weed. Various studies say ... no effect, or causes various mental issues ... Who is correct? 10 million bad results is a lot of bad results. How do we fix these bad results? Another is that alcohol is not as debilitating or as debilitating for as long as most other drugs. Yeah, one can get thoroughly blottoed one evening, and the next morning go back to work with a (monster) hangover, and be reasonably competent to perform. But weed, coke, ... how long do the effects last? How do we know that the doper is now clean, so we can trust his engineering design and calculations, or his medical/financial/legal /... opinion and work? Essentially, the arguments For Legalization boil down to: use is going to happen anyway, ... and really, all that use does is make the user feel good. The arguments against can be seen around town, but one has to look: in nice suburban homes (for a while) but eventally in slums, crack houses, homeless encampments, etc. This might just be the one issue where the needs of society outweigh the needs of the individual. Xanadu
Kubla Khan In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea. So twice five miles of fertile ground With walls and towers were girdled round: And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills, Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover! A savage place! as holy and enchanted As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted By woman wailing for her demon-lover! And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething, As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing, A mighty fountain momently was forced: Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail, Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail: And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever It flung up momently the sacred river. Five miles meandering with a mazy motion Through wood and dale the sacred river ran, Then reached the caverns measureless to man, And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean: And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far Ancestral voices prophesying war! The shadow of the dome of pleasure Floated midway on the waves; Where was heard the mingled measure From the fountain and the caves. It was a miracle of rare device, A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice! A damsel with a dulcimer In a vision once I saw: It was an Abyssinian maid, And on her dulcimer she played, Singing of Mount Abora. Could I revive within me Her symphony and song, To such a deep delight 'twould win me That with music loud and long I would build that dome in air, That sunny dome! those caves of ice! And all who heard should see them there, And all should cry, Beware! Beware! His flashing eyes, his floating hair! Weave a circle round him thrice, And close your eyes with holy dread, For he on honey-dew hath fed And drunk the milk of Paradise. Beer goes a long way further back than that, probably as far back as the Neolithic. Some people believe that agriculture was first developed to produce enough grain for brewing beer rather than as a source of food. Many primitive cultures had some sort of fermented beverage. It may not have only been about getting high, though. Beer is mostly water, and the process of making beer made water safe to drink. Since this is open, I suppose I can talk about this.
My 18 year old son recently moved to Alberta, Canada. It seems that there is a professor at the University of Lethbridge who is the head of "Occupy Lethbridge" and he's got a little cadre of brainwashed prog students that he does a radio show with once a week. I'm not sure how my son met him, but my son has now been tapped to provide the opposing viewpoint on their Marxist broadcasts. Son said "professor was amazed to find someone who could intelligently defend conservative principles"* That's charmingly condescending, of course, but while I'm proud as hell of my kid, I'm also a little nervous. I'll bet the parents of big league pitchers feel something like that the first game their little boy throws in the show. In this case, I just hope it's all on the up and up. Progs are pitifully easy to out-debate using logic and facts, but they're also past masters at dirty tricks. I hope number one son doesn't get blindsided by something underhanded. * Personally, I'm still waiting to find a liberal of any age who can coherently explain (much less intelligently defend) whatever passes for principles on the left. #227, it is so bad that African immigrants often send their children to private school or back to their home countries rather than allow them to be contaminated by public school. The whole "you're owed and disadvantaged" thing pounded into their heads in public school is incredibly damaging to blacks and does more to foster racism and inequality than anything these days.
The way in which society attacks successful blacks, at least the ones that don't follow the entertaining/sports/or 'community' service stereotypes, whom speak out against the status quo, see Bill Cosby, is sickening. Posted by: BlueFalcon in Boston at July 28, 2012 11:47 PM (KCvsd) 234

My gut feeling tells me that if something is allowed, very many people will do it, and if it is not allowed, many, maybe most, won't.
------------------------------------------------- Well, I can see why it's a gut feeling, but it's been proven time and time again that it's simply not true. Lots of gut feelings are wrong. Most people in Nevada never patronize or become prostitutes. Most people don't smoke cigarettes anymore (and, yeah, the restrictions on that are kind of onerous but it is still technically legal). Most people don't take out-and-out welfare. And the number of people who do the allowed things to excess, or otherwise inappropriately are even smaller. Now, when something is easy and seems consequence-free, people do more of that. People pirate music more, people have more sex now that birth control/condoms are cheap and available to lessen the risks and societal norms have loosened regarding sex, people watch more porn now that it's on the internet instead of in skeezy theaters (Fred Willard notwithstanding). But there are still plenty of well-known consequences to using drugs, and especially to using them to excess---your teeth fall out, your skin gets destroyed, you end up on A&E's Intervention show (or worse, Dr. Phil) and generally become a trainwreck that nobody wants to be around. You lose educational and professional opportunities. Pretty much the same consequences that keep a lot of people from drinking at all and most people from drinking to excess. Now, about how we know more about alcohol than about other drugs----eh, we actually know quite a bit about other drugs; doctors have been studying these substances for years. It's true that the newer the drug, the less we know...but if they were legal, we'd probably find the drugs sooner and people would be more forthcoming about the safety---a guy who comes up with and patents a substance on the up-and-up kind of has a vested interest in seeing his clientele live to buy another hit. "beer actually caused civilization"
Stable agriculture, common language, animal husbandry, and potable liquid (beer) are critical for civilization. Food, water, and communication are the essentials for survival. Libs go on-and-on about all sorts of things -- health care, education, unicorns, lollipops -- and claim that an ever-more-powerful state could grant these to a cheering populace. When conservatives point out that the state cannot grant what it doesn't compel from someone else, they get "oh, conservatives are anti-lollipop!" As far as the drug thing goes:
Would people inject heroin if they were able to smoke opium? Would they smoke crack if they were free to chew coca leaves? Would they buy "bath salts" (whatever the fuck that is) if they could grow pot in their back yards? Many of the newfangled "designer drugs" are developed simply to get around existing drug laws. Then there are the no-knock raids that basically started to keep druggies from flushing their stash when the police came to their door. Now every local police force in the country has more firepower than a frickin' Third World army. The drug war proves that there isn't any problem that can't be made worse when the government gets involved. Posted by: rickl at July 29, 2012 12:04 AM (sdi6R) 255

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as “bad luck.” Posted by: Robert Heinlein at July 29, 2012 12:30 AM (AUeaU) 282

Also had waaaaaaay too much family time this summer. My sisters, while they didn't vote for Obama, they are staunch Democrats nevertheless. One sister was talking about how she was afraid that being Republican was contagious and she might catch something after she talked to a known Republican in her office (gasp!) Another sister was appalled that I thought more gun control wouldn't prevent further Aurora style shootings. Because apparently guns leap into law abiding citizen's hands and make them do criminal things. If there weren't guns, people wouldn't commit so much crime.

That's probably the primary reason that Hitler created the Waffen SS
*** Being a revolutionary community organizer himself, originally Hitler was planning on using the SA as his private army and doing away with the existing army or sidelining it. The problem for Hitler is the SA were led by a "loud and proud" pedophile, and the Wehrmacht leadership made it clear they would not allow Hitler to sweep Rohm into any kind of real power. 303 Any alternative fiction books out that take the timeline from "if Hitler died"?
Can't say anything about books, but the "Red Alert" series of RTS computer games posited a world where Hitler was "taken care of" after he was released from prison in 1924. By '42 Operation Barbarossa had failed and the Eastern Front had become essentially a war of attrition. Barring a miracle, Germany was bound to lose by that point, even according to Albert Speer's detailed projections. And anyway, Stauffenberg didn't act until mid-1944, after the Anglo-Americans had invaded France and Operation Bagration had destroyed the German defensive front in the East. I think Stauffenberg would have remained loyal had he perceived that Germany could still end the war successfully. Posted by: Cicero at July 29, 2012 12:50 AM (zMouK) 322

There were helicopters in WWII. Not many - but I think both the Germans and Americans had them. I was going to suggest that perhaps you were confusing helicopters with autogyros, but then I checked Wikipedia: Despite the success of the Gyroplane Laboratoire, the German Focke-Wulf Fw 61, first flown in 1936, would eclipse its accomplishments. The Fw 61 broke all of the helicopter world records in 1937, demonstrating a flight envelope that had only previously been achieved by the autogyro. Nazi Germany would use helicopters in small numbers during World War II for observation, transport, and medical evacuation. The Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri synchropter was used in the Mediterranean, while the Focke Achgelis Fa 223 Drache was used in Europe.[citation needed] Extensive bombing by the Allied forces prevented Germany from producing any helicopters in large quantities during the war. In the United States, Igor Sikorsky and W. Lawrence LePage were competing to produce the United States military's first helicopter. Prior to the war, LePage had received the patent rights to develop helicopters patterned after the Fw 61, and built the XR-1.[31] Meanwhile, Sikorsky had settled on a simpler, single rotor design, the VS-300, which turned out to be the first practical single lifting-rotor helicopter design and the best-flying one since the Soviet TsAGI 1-EA flown nearly a decade before.[citation needed] After experimenting with configurations to counteract the torque produced by the single main rotor, he settled on a single, smaller rotor mounted on the tailboom. Developed from the VS-300, Sikorsky's R-4 became the first large-scale mass produced helicopter with a production order for 100 aircraft. The R-4 was the only Allied helicopter to see service in World War II, primarily being used for rescue in Burma, Alaska, and other areas with harsh terrain. Total production would reach 131 helicopters before the R-4 was replaced by other Sikorsky helicopters such as the R-5 and the R-6. In all, Sikorsky would produce over 400 helicopters before the end of World War II.[32] Fascinating. I didn't know that. Posted by: rickl at July 29, 2012 01:00 AM (sdi6R) 337

Conventional history says that the first bombing of London was due to a navigational error by the Luftwaffe, they had intended to deliver a knockout blow to the RAF airfields
As the conventional history goes, Churchill ordered a retaliatory RAF raid on Berlin which so enraged Hitler that he ordered nightly bombings on London, allowing the RAF to recover I don't buy that. " I think Goering assured Hitler that he stuck a fork in the RAF because they were done, and London was intentionally targeted to terrorize the British into suing for peace."
Add to that the frustration that Hitler felt by losing the Battle of Britain. He wanted England to suffer and pay for defying him. He wanted everyone, everywhere in the world to understand that defying the Reich meant hell. The Germans almost won the Battle of Britian; England was essentially out of fuel. One more day and they'd have done it, but it was taking too long and Germany wanted nations to be terrified of them. Take too long to conquer a country and the next one won't be as frightened. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at July 29, 2012 01:35 AM (r4wIV) 384
The other problem with his strategy was that he literally gave Soviet
citizens no choice. Surrender really did mean death and slavery. The first batch of German troops were actually greeted as liberators initially. Not capitalizing on that sentiment, and acting like brutal conquerors was Hitler's biggest mistake. The Soviet Union's populace had no particular love for Stalin or the communists until they were confronted with something even worse. Posted by: @PurpAv at July 29, 2012 01:36 AM (LX9yA) 385

Personally I think it should have been a much more character oriented movie. Instead of telling the story of the attempted coup they should have told the stories of the men behind it. The coup should have been the subplot because to me it just didn't make for that exciting a story and ends in an anticlimactic fashion. Cruise wasn't bad but there's a little scene where he glances down a hallway at another conspirator with what was supposed to be his glass eye that had me facepalming hardcore. Another great "what if" moment. For some reason the Germans almost completely ignored England's radar antennas. They were the thin line between victory and defeat in the Battle of Britain. Had the Germans taken Moscow in November 1941, there's good reason to believe thatStalin would've been overthrown. What the replacement government would have done is speculative; perhaps they would've negotiated, perhaps they would've fought on, but with vastly less authority, and thus ability to command people, resources and action.
The 700,000 troops in Kiev were not particularly mobile or particularly effective at this time of the war. Cutting them off was a victory, and secured a flank, but a Soviet withdrawl seems more likely than an attack. Mobile forces could have secured the flank for a few weeks. Zhukov was asked about his philosophy about how to handle the German mine fields. He said he ignored them as if they didn't exist and simply advanced through them without stopping to clear the mines. His theory was the losses you take from the mines would be roughly equivalent to the losses you'd take remaining a stationary target for German bombers and fighters while mines were cleared, with the additional penalty of having your advance not cover as much ground. *** But the Germans would have had fewer troops to use preciously because they would have to cover this flank. And the Soviet troops that tried to break the encirclement from the outside would have been fresh to use in Moscow and the troops that successfully defended Moscow in real history would have been their anyway. The Germans could not have taken Moscow in '41 if they left the Kiev pocket alone. Posted by: 18-1 at July 29, 2012 01:48 AM (AUeaU) 398

Can't say I would have watched them much anyway. Am I interested in many of these sports outside the Olympics? Not really. Am I going to be interested in it just because you put in this setting? Still no. After the U.S. vs. Soviet rivalry disappeared and the games started occurring every two years, it became much more difficult to care. Basically (to get me watching and rooting for this), you're left with the U.S. vs. "everybody else" rivalry--now, I can certainly enjoy that, but even I have my limits and, for me to get into it, you have to comfortable with engaging in blatant unrepentant nationalism, which is something the IOC and everybody involved with it doesn't seem to like very much. Withdrawal had been standard Russian tactic for hundreds of years. The invaders supply lines lengthen, your shorten, and there's a LOT of space to withdraw into while waiting for the Russian winter to seal the invader's fate. I wrote a paper on this for a HS history class. The teacher thought I swiped it from somebody selling college term papers and couldn't believe a HS student had such a grasp of history and military strategy. Clearly, ignoring Kiev would've been a giant risk, and Guderian might have failed anyway.
But Guderian seems to have felt that he could have taken Moscow had the diversion to Kiev not happened. While the Soviets would've had many troops at Moscow, they would've had 4 weeks' less troops, tanks and perparation ... and 4 more weeks to fight the Germans before the mud and snow set in. Even with the historical OB, the Battle of Moscow was a near-run thing for the Soviets. Posted by: Arbalest at July 29, 2012 02:03 AM (duVjn) 414

And I would like to state that the rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" that was played is very, VERY good. That's got to be the London Symphony who recorded it - I'm sure they did all the anthems - but whoever scored this arrangement deserves a gold. Sometimes they are badly done and way too fast (looking at you, former USSR), but I will not mind listening to this as many times as our athletes can arrange it. I believe Zhukov was around because he had been in the Far East (and, I think, done something of note in the dust-up with the Japs in Manchuria) - and thus away from the killing fields of the purges. All I know is I sat in his chair on Stalin's special command railroad car, which sits at the Stalin museum and birthplace in Gori, Georgia (or at least did in the early 90s). (Also found a very cool pre-purge painting of Stalin and Ordzhonokidze at Stalin's dacha in Borjomi - the Georgians rented it out for conferences and one day I was able to just wander around inside .... amazing). Wasn't that British raid on Berlin the one that shortly followed the dinner party where Goering boasted "Wenn nur eine Bombe in Berlin fallt, konnenSie mir Meyer heissen"? Gotta immerse myself in the eastern front one of these days - I'm a bit shaky there, despite years of Russian, a fair amount of time in the Soviet Union and post-USSR, and having been to most of the key sites near Leningrad. I lost interest in the Olympics sometime in the 90s. I don't remember exactly when it was, but I noticed that the TV coverage focused exclusively on the American athletes and their life stories. Sports where Americans weren't heavily involved or doing well were ignored.
I'm as patriotic as the next guy, I was watching on an American TV network, and of course I want to see Americans win, but aren't there any athletes anywhere else in the world who have led interesting lives? So what if a particular event doesn't have Americans in it? Maybe some of us would like to see it anyway. It just seemed, well, unseemly, and over the top. Anyway, I pretty much quit watching TV after the 2008 election. About the only things I watch nowadays are occasional baseball and football games. This year the Phillies suck and I'm not much of a football fan anyway. Posted by: rickl at July 29, 2012 02:49 AM (sdi6R) 448

If the entire Brewers bullpen and closers end up floating in the Milwaukee river, the first ones to question will be the Brew Crew's starting pitchers, who have mostly done good jobs this year but have been robbed of wins by the jokers in the bullpen. I like listening to sports on the radio rather than watching it on TV. Radio announcers are dramatically better at filling what would otherwise be dead air with interesting banter, factoids, and better descriptions. The TV announcers get lazy and assume you're actually watching the TV and leave a lot of detail out.

Navy Green Fleet:
Some years ago I heard that the Air Force was developing a coal-to-jet fuel conversion capacity. That made sense, because we have shitloads of coal, and we would need to keep the jets going if a war broke out that cut off our oil imports. Interestingly, the conversion process was invented by the Nazis before WW2. They had a pretty good idea that their oil supply would be compromised in the years to come. The process only became economical fairly recently. You need oil to be at least about $50/bbl. But "green fuel"? That's just embarrasing. Posted by: Optimizer at July 29, 2012 03:06 AM (As94z) 467

Interestingly, the conversion process was invented by the Nazis before WW2.
The Germans were very big on organic chemistry long before other people. For a number of years, all the breakthrough papers and research were only available in the original German. There's a very interesting process (LPMEOH) that takes coal directly to roadable (95% dry) methanol, and it can be done very very cheaply (cheaper than refining gasoline). and the big, big problem with the whole turn-coal-to-liquid-fuel technology is that you first have to turn it into a gas. So no matter what the technology is, you will always have that big thermodynamic penalty working against you. It would make more sense to figure out how to turn solids directly into liquid fuels without having to first pass through the gas phase.

I'm not sure I've heard of that one. The one I remember was the Bergius process, but there was also another one (I forget the difference). I thought it converted to methane first. Made me think that to US converting to natural gas cars made sense, even before we found unbelievable new natgas reserves here. With natgas having become dirt cheap, I hear some truck fleets are converting, and maybe that will help establish a natgas distribution infrastructure for transportation. The US could easily be energy-independent in 5-10 years, if we pulled our heads out of our globally-warmed butts. Posted by: Optimizer at July 29, 2012 03:26 AM (As94z) 492

Optimizer, it could mean methane, but typically it is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. And it doesn't really matter what the identity of the gas is, it takes a lot of energy to turn any substance from a solid to a gas.

Methane has poor energy density compared to liquid methanol, as well as requiring a complete rework of existing distribution/dispensing infrastructure. Methanol is roughly 1/2 the energy density of gasoline/gal but it can be stored in vehicles using existing low pressure light weight plastic tanks. LPMEOH cooks coal slurry to produce the Synthesis gas methanol is derived from, but the heat from that reaction doesn't have to be discarded and can be used in an electricity co-gen capacity. Free energy can always be transformed into heat. The problem with wind so far has been excessive maintenance costs on the generator heads, and existing (cheap) solar panels still ain't that cheap even those crappy Chinese polysilicon ones, and are very crud/dirt sensitive and need constant cleaning to maintain peak efficiency. Might be able to do something cheaply with a long parabolic mirror setup to preheat the slurry to near flash temps though. The pilot facility that proved the LPMEOH concept didn't get that deeply into hard core peripheral process optimizations. Posted by: @PurpAv at July 29, 2012 03:58 AM (LX9yA) 509

You are all fucking nobodies. No one could give a flying fuck about any of you save for that one time every four years where we all engage in nationalistic dick waving. You are rightly proud of your athletic abilities but you are still expected to carry yourselves like fucking grown-ups. Put on your clothes, pull up your pants and put away your ridiculous "grillz". You represent a nation of some 300,000,000 million plus people. When you act like assholes, you make us all look like assholes. **** This^ I liked it better when they weren't all pros. Well, much as I'd like to hang here all night, I'm afraid that my snoring would ruin the ambiance -- so I'm taking it elsewhere. Have a good night!

Hire a tight ship or fly commercial. Taking the cheapest bid without verifying professionalism cost missing the event/purpose. Sure, better safe than sorry.
