Mike Bloomberg: Cops Should Go On Strike Until Gun Control Laws Are Toughened. BONUS: Bloomberg Pretty Sweet On Communist Vietnam

Gabe had this in his headline thread but it's so monumentally stupid that it deserves some extra coverage.

“I don’t understand why police officers across this country don’t stand up collectively and say we’re going to go on strike, we’re not going to protect you unless you, the public, through your legislature, do what’s required to keep us safe,’’ he told CNN’s Piers Morgan.

First, it's illegal almost everywhere for cops to go on strike because of the lawlessness that would ensue in some areas. That would actually be an argument in favor of people having their own weapons. If the cops could just pack it in anytime, people would more likely want a firearm.

Second, he says cops should be especially outraged because they face more gun violence than the average person. Well, sort of. Cops do faced more armed criminals. How many cops are shot each year by otherwise law abiding citizens who go through training, permitting, etc? Also, when you become a cop, you know the job can be dangerous. People don't expect to be attacked in their own home or shot at in a movie theater. No matter what Bloomberg and his anti-gun nut friends think, people have a right to protect themselves and that doesn't mean "call the cops after it's all over".

Which brings me to my challenge to Mayor Bloomberg....put you life where your mouth is and give up your armed security detail. If it's too dangerous out there for cops that they should strike, put them on desk duty where they will be nice and safe. You can then take the same chances you are willing to make the little people take.

It's so stupid I can only imagine it was meant as a piece of performance art.

But here's what you really need to know about how Bloomberg views freedom:

"I want to congratulate Vietnam for officially going smoke-free. Last week, Vietnam adopted a comprehensive tobacco control law which makes virtually all public places 100% smoke-free and requires vivid health warnings on all tobacco packages. These are proven practices that Bloomberg Philanthropies advocates through its work to reduce tobacco use," said Michael Bloomberg. "Tobacco control is a key initiative of Bloomberg Philanthropies because we know reducing smoking and exposure to second hand smoke saves lives. This significant step in Vietnam, where we have been working since 2007, is encouraging for tobacco control efforts globally. I visited Vietnam in March and spoke with the Prime Minister about this important issue and I want to applaud him and the other government leaders for their strong commitment to saving lives and standing up for the health of the people of Vietnam."

Yes, Vietnam is still a Communist state.

Gun grabbing, freedom hating Communists, they tend to flock together, don't they?

Because of three reasons:

1) There actually ARE some police officers out there who take their job seriously and really DO want to protect and serve.

2) Police officers realize that taxpayers pay their g-ddamn salaries, unions or no, and that pipeline would be shut off pretty damn quick if they pulled a stunt like this.

and

3) There's a good chance they wouldn't have a job to go back to, because all the licensed gun owners in this country would have a good shot (heh, no pun intended) at getting crime under control without them getting in the way.

97 Meanwhile...

The VP's remarks will not be tweeted

Vice President Joe Biden will take questions from reporters on a White House press call today, and as has been the case in the past, the on-the-record conversation will be embargoed until the end of the call.

The curious caveat -- who would write an article during the middle of the call? -- is a product of the post-Twitter presidential campaign, barring reporters from the beloved habit of tweeting remarks in real-time.

But it begs the question: If it's going to be in an article 20 minutes later, why can't it be on Twitter right now?

From White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest, via email: "The embargo will allow journalists to hear the entirety of the Vice President’s remarks and get the benefit of having their questions answered -- before trying to condense a 30-minute conference call about a 20-page NEC report into a 140 characters."

Embargoed, that's what Kennedy did in Cuba and the Republicans gave him hell for it. So, I suggested this to Barack (the embargo thing), because you have these right wing hate mongers repeating what I say without the proper "filters". He agreed of course.

Folks, we haven't had such wisdom in the Oval office in AT LEAST 500 years. Damn that Barack is smart, whip smart, clean and very articulate.

It's a tough crowd for Romney. I am pro romney and was before a bunch here were but I had to overcome personal problems with his history during Vietnam before I got there. Most of the VA guys these days are Vietnam vets and it would have been a lot easier to warm up to him if he would have helped then. For vets to start a love affair with him he would have to explain why he didn't and today would have been a good time to do that.

164 Poll gives Romney lead on economy despite Obama’s Bain attacks
By Jonathan Easley - 07/24/12 07:40 AM ET

A strong majority of Americans say Mitt Romney’s background in the private sector, including his management at the private equity firm he founded, Bain Capital, would help him make the right decisions on the economy.

According to a new USA Today-Gallup poll, 63 percent viewed Romney’s business background as a strength in handling the country’s economic woes, versus 29 percent who viewed it negatively.

The poll raises questions over the effectiveness of the Obama campaign’s barrage of attacks highlighting instances of outsourcing by companies Bain invested in and businesses that folded or laid off workers after being acquired by the private equity firm.
The Obama campaign has also tried to tie Bain to Romney’s personal wealth, and in particular his foreign bank accounts and investments, claiming that Romney has not been transparent about his finances and should release more than his disclosed two years of tax returns.

The Obama campaign has been challenged on the fairness of those attacks, including by some in the Democratic Party, but according to the poll, most voters don’t view either side’s attacks as unfair. Thirty-six percent said Romney was unfairly attacking President Obama, while 38 percent said Obama was unfairly attacking Romney.

The vast majority of the time cops are historians, showing up after and gathering facts on the past. And that's not a dig at cops, it's just the reality of numbers.

NYC has around 36k cops. A good percentage of those never leave their precinct houses since they're "infrastructure" and not patrol officers. How the remaining numbers can protect over 8 million residents from violence is something the little megalomaniac needs to explain to those of us who cling to our Bibles, guns, and math books....

Background checks for people wanting to buy guns in Colorado reportedly increased more than 41 percent after last week’s Aurora movie massacre. The Denver Post reports that firearm instructors have also seen increased interest in training needed for a concealed-carry permit.
"It's been insane," Jake Meyers, an employee at Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo in Parker told the newspaper Monday.
Between Friday and Sunday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm — a 43 percent increase over the previous Friday through Sunday and a 39 percent jump over those same days on the first weekend of July.
The biggest spike was on Friday, when there were 1,216 checks, a 43 percent increase over the average number for the previous two Fridays.

247 Pretty disappointed in some of you Morons for this thread. Sh*tting on all the police officers is stupid and, frankly, something I'd expect from liberals. 99.9% of officers are just like us. Good, honest, hardworking men and women who are doing their best at their job. Think about it, how many raids do you think happen across the country on a daily basis? How many doors get kicked in? Now, how often do they go wrong? I'm betting it's a pretty damn miniscule percentage.

Cops are like the rest of us, there are nice guys, tough guys, assholes, p*ssies, etc. To paint all cops as jack booted a-holes is not only irresponsible, it's just stupid. Every single time I've ever had a dealing with the cops, I treated them with respect and politeness and I got the exact same back. The fact that your only dealings with officers is when you get pulled over for speeding just shows that they're doing their job.

Brit troops are good at the urban anti-terrorism thing because of their experience in Northern Ireland. But I fear that there's too much going on for them to be effective. Let's hope they've got somebody smart coordinating between private security, Scotland Yard, the army, MI-5, and whoever else is involved.

2.Holme's doctor...for prescribing meds, not monitoring.
3. Warner Bros...for depicting the violence that influenced Holmes.

431 Did Bloomberg get the "cops on strike" idea from Batman or from Robocop?

434 Any cop who is scared of an armed citizenry probably has a reason to be and needs to find another line of work.

435 "How many doors get kicked in? Now, how often do they go wrong? I'm betting it's a pretty damn miniscule percentage."
-
They mostly go wrong when they do a no knock raid on the wrong house. "Going wrong" is an awful euphemism for some innocent person being killed because the LEO couldn't be bothered to make sure it was the right house. It's also pretty dismaying to be informed by the police officials that the LEO did nothing wrong and the poor innocent person did something stupid like try to defend themselves against an intruder who they didn't know was an LEO.
-
Wrong. Fucking. House. Sorry about that but
you shouldn't have done that stupid thing that
got you killed. Your bad. We have immunity in any case so....um....suck it up.
-
Instapundit has been reporting these incidents for years. Check the archives.
-
By the way, it's true that the distribution of LEO personalities mimics that of the population at large. The difference, of course, is that most of the population can't make your life miserable if they're having a bad fucking day. With impunity that is.

436 The sad thing its true, a lot of cops are pro-gun control, especially in NYC. I mean... they'd be the only ones with guns if it all worked out right, that's hardly a loss from their perspective.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at July 24, 2012 06:00 PM (r4wIV)

437 Watch, the security company "backing out" is a false flag; troops are in place in the cities, terrorists strike and in response to the "crisis" the troops never leave. Hope I'm wrong, but watch- if so it would just be a dry run for what we're about to see here

442 Total BS.
The Supreme Court has ruled (more than once) that "police are under no obligation to protect citizens."

446 406...late response, I know...

Not only the soda ban, pretty much anything he has proposed is voted fdown, or in the case of the smoking ban in bars, largely ignored.

Yeah, the larger clubs and touristy places comply, but go into a local neighborhood tappy. More likely than not, they will have ashtrays along the bar.
