Obama: Why, This Mitt Romney Newcomer Doesn't Have the Qualifications To Run a National Economy

Apparently David Axelrod has run some focus group tests on possible campaign themes, and "Unhinged Projection" tested through the roof.

We win if the election is about the economy but lose if the election is about Bain. The electorate can't fathom private equity, and the 2012 election is not the time for a learning experience.
This is all about whether or not Romney will allow this narrative of an 'outsourcing, corporate takeover loving,rich guy' to stick. He needs to work harder, but no need to panic quite yet.

37 The inescapable conclusion is that their internal polling is very bad and that desperation is giving way to sheer panic. Axelrod is not dumb enough to have Obama even mentioning the economy, unless their internal polling already has told them that all the various bait and switch and diversionary tactics (Bain Capital, abortion, condoms, taxes, debt ceiling, etc.) are not working out too well.

If that's what's actually happening here then we're about to move on to the final three stages of the campaign: (1) Overt race baiting of a kind and scope that would make even Sharpton and Jackson blush, (2) direct attacks against Romney's Mormonism, (3) whatever they've got on tap for the October surprise, but perhaps accelerated to September or even accelerated to right before the GOP convention.

The fundamentals are swinging toward Romney, but Bain is keeping what should be a shift in his direction from occurring.

Bain is much, much different than birth control, gay marriage, or another wedge issue. It is a direct, negative attack against Romney. It is also difficult to defend in some ways. Calling Obama a liar is risky, because the flip-flop ads are still going to be part of this election as some time.

Romney's experience, while potentially useful, appears more parochial to me -- domestic corporations with mundane and routine product lines such as office supplies. So Obama's point is not entirely that Romney failed to create jobs (a different debate) but that his business perspective is narrowed an blinkered. America needs a global, "big picture" visionary, which is what the President brings to the table.
