Obama: I Regret Not Speaking Slower And Using Smaller Words. If I Had, You'd Realize How Lucky You Are I Let You Have Me As Your President
Bumped

Bumped by ace. Make sure you check out the sneaky changes Slublog made to the unemployment chart, which I missed on first glance. Also, embedded video added after the fold.

You might think Obama's greatest regret as President would be, oh I don't know, massive unemployment, crushing debt, or even a couple of hundred dead Mexicans.

If you did think any of those things, you'd be wrong.

"When I think about what we've done well and what we haven't done well," the president said, "the mistake of my first term - couple of years - was thinking that this job was just about getting the policy right. And that's important. But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times."

Mr. Obama acknowledged the dissonance between others' perception of his strength as an expert orator, and his own.

"It's funny - when I ran, everybody said, well he can give a good speech but can he actually manage the job?" he said. "And in my first two years, I think the notion was, 'Well, he's been juggling and managing a lot of stuff, but where's the story that tells us where he's going?' And I think that was a legitimate criticism."

Pressed by Rose about what he felt he needed to explain better to the American people, the president corrected that he wanted to do more "explaining, but also inspiring."

Liberals simply can't fathom the idea that people don't like their policy ideas and the results they produce when we're stupid enough to let them run things. No, it's always our fault for not "getting it".

Well, they are going to get it at the ballot box come November.

Related: The Obama campaign released a new chart showing what unemployment will be like in a second Obama term (if God forbid, there is one).

betterstories.jpg

I may have lied and that chart is from the great @slublog (who you should be following on Twitter if you're not already) and not the Obama campaign. Who is to say?

Dave in Texas reminds me to remind you that as often as you see that chart around, it was invented by a former commenter/co-blogger here at the HQ named Geoff.

131 UPDATE: Romney camp responds...

In response, Romney criticized the president’s leadership.

“President Obama believes that millions of Americans have lost their homes, their jobs and their livelihood because he failed to tell a good story. Being president is not about telling stories. Being president is about leading, and President Obama has failed to lead. No wonder Americans are losing faith in his presidency,” he said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Republican National Committee was also quick to pounce on Mr. Obama’s comments, telling reporters in an emailed statement, “With 23 million people struggling under our slow economy, the decision for voters isn’t ‘can the president tell a good story,’ it’s ‘can the president create jobs.’”

219 I think that is a fair self-criticism. Obama has not been entirely clear with the American people just how much he's accomplished: bringing the economy back from the brink with the stimulus, rescuing the auto industry, enacting a health care plan that expands and improves care for all Americans. Of course, I'm sure he could accomplish a lot more if he didn't have an obstructionist House that refuses to craft any sort of bi-partisan solutions.

RoMONEY, on the other hand has to explain his shady history at Bain, his spooky religion that has a history of prejudice against blacks AND his treatment of dogs. But perhaps his biggest affront to normal, everyday normal Americans is his obscene car garage elevator. That is the real boner-killer.

I don't believe smoking should be permitted inside public spaces such as courthouses, city hall, or libraries, nor on airplanes or buses ... but that's the extent of it. Florida put a smoking ban for restaurants on the ballot several years ago and I voted against it, but it passed by a considerable margin.

Were they taking extra time because they were interested and it was a conversation?

Or was it more like and interrogation?

Did it drag out because of your questions, their answers and did they act put out about the quantity or quality of your questions?

Their demeanor throughout the interview COULD be a clue.

Or maybe not. Don't get your hopes up but think hard about the job and whether you really want it and what the downsides are. (there's always downsides so be honest with yourself) Have an answer BEFORE they call back.

It can go either way. There is one group of headhunters that says it's a good thing and that they want you.

There is another group of headhunters that say it can be a good thing if you were prepared for it and ask some interesting questions about the company and not necessarily about the job. Some interviewers use it as part of the interview to see what they can gleen from you using that tactic.

Like if it's a sales job you can look at their website and see if they have new products coming out etc. and ask about them or notice they are expanding to a new location or something. It shows you did some homework and are interested in the company.

The fact that it lasted so long is a good sign

Oh, I agree. Back when you could smoke on planes there were still newscasters reading the news with a haze of smoke around them. It was what was considered 'normal'. My mom grandma always said not to smoke when I was young. It's bad for you, it will make you sick. That was probably 20 years before the government said it 'might' be harmful. Anyone with an ounce of sense could see that people who smoked didn't breath all that well when they got older. I don't smoke in people's houses, or around people who don't smoke. Hell, I don't even smoke in my own house. That being said....when they don't let people smoke anywhere somebody is gonna have to make up that huge dollar shortfall the cigarette taxes used to provide.

Trick question for them: which of his budgets did that?

All of his budgets were soundly rejected.

All he did was spend the HUGE amounts of money the DEMOCRAT Congress and Senate voted in during 2007-2008, and then have blocked budgets since then to keep Republicans from cutting those increases back down.

But then, what effect would that have? They're liberals, they lie about everything.

363 from AFP, July 12 (thanks to all who sent this in):

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai called Thursday on Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar to give up fighting his US-backed government in return for the chance to run for president of the war-torn nation.
Mullah Omar, the one-eyed Taliban leader who has been on run since the United States toppled his regime in late 2001, is one of the world's most wanted men and is leading a Taliban insurgency aimed at ousting Karzai.

Karzai has repeatedly called on Omar and other insurgents fighting against his administration to renounce violence and accept peaceful reintegration.

"I repeat my call on all Afghans, those who aren't the puppets of others and have (only) issues with us at home -- they're welcome for any talks," he told a news conference.

"Mullah Mohammad Omar can come inside Afghanistan anywhere he wants to. He can open political office for himself but he should leave the gun.

"He along with his friends can come and create his political party, do politics, become a candidate himself for the elections. If people voted for him, good for him, he can take the leadership in his hand," Karzai said.

The Taliban have repeatedly turned down Karzai's peace offers and earlier this year withdrew from exploratory talks with the United States in Qatar.

393 Been bombarded on Facebook from Liberal friends the graph claiming Obama has slowed spending the most since Eisenhower. Jeesh I'm not sure what they mean but then, I don't think they do either. Federal Outlays 2009 3,517,677B 2010 3,456,213B 2011 3,603,061B 2012 3,795,547B estimated
Posted by: toby928© at July 12, 2012 08:16 PM (QupBk)

This is one of the arguments the libs are going to make hard, and it might work because the refutation gets a little complicated to make to people with 10 second attention spans. But the libs are trying to take advantage of the fact that the fed govt fiscal year runs from 10/1 to 9/30, so FY 2009 (10-08 to 9-09) would have been the last budget that Bush signed. So from the numbers up there, it looks like O's first budget actually had less spending than W's last, with "modest" increases since then.

But the key point is that the Dems didn't pass a budget for FY 2009 until after Obama took office. Then they added some $400B bill for (I think) transportation and then the $800B porkulus. Plus payouts for TARP are being debited against Bush, but as banks repay the loans the receipts are credited to Obama. So to show Obama as the big spender we know he is, you have to compare how much more we spend now compared to FY 2008.

This meme of theirs got some attention about a month or so back when some objective journalist from Bloomberg or Reuters basically put that graph out with talking points almost directly from the DNC. It has been debunked at a number of blogs (try Pethokoukis).

394 As much as I love Rubio (though less since his pseudo-Dream Act thing) and West, they're both in their first terms in national office. Give them time to develop. Neither one is ready for national office, and both have huge potential upside down the road. Rubio needs to do some soul searching (e.g. cold-hearted political recalibration) regarding his immigration stance, and West just needs to continue giving more interviews like the one featured on AoS yesterday that show his educated, measured, and thoughtful side. Both need time, and could use the seasoning of a reelection campaign or two. Condi is a bad choice to me in the same regard - sure, she's bright and capable, but having never been through any kind of election, we have no way to know how she'd fare on the campaign trail. Safe and boring is the way to go for this year, in my opinion. At this point, I'd prefer to see Portman. Plenty of VP picks have been boring geographical choices, and many of them ended up actually beeing VPs. Anything that draws attention to the horse race aspect of the campaign draws attention away from the Oconomy.

Why his great and brilliant policies were frustrated by water, by markets, by fractious Arabs, by storms, by machines, by cynics, by heat waves, by oil spills, by the Tea Party, by Slurpies, by messy democracy, by Reagan, by Bush, by Bush, by Bush, by Bush, by Bush, by Bush, by bankers, by oil companies, by oil prices, by gasoline prices, by low marginal tax rates on the rich, by Fox News, by earthquakes, by Rush Limbaugh, by speculators, by Clinton, by Bush, by Paul Ryan, by the Supreme Court, by Congress, by the depth of the recession which he didn't understand, by lazy Americans, by uncreative Americans, by SUVs, by Wall Street banks, by the Wall Street Journal, by Rupert Murdoch...

Have I missed any of the things that make Obama's policies unable to work, and which he didn't anticipate happening or being able to frustrate his intentions?

So here's the question: If Obama's policies depend on being implemented only in a static, uneventful, peaceful, passive, pliant, inert world in order to work, why the hell should we think he's intelligent or can come up with any good policies?

Obviously, he can come up with policies that work only in non-real circumstances that cannot possibly occur. And this is the mark of the most intelligent man ever to hold the office of president? This is a man we'd want to keep in office?

Sadly, his team hasn't done a good job framing everything for context.
No other President had to deal with the aftermath of the financial
collapse of the Euro, the Tsunami/earthquake in Japan, the failure of
greedy banks and Wall Street or other acts of God that are beyond
President Obama's control! No other president has faced any crisis of
greater magnitude than President Obama!

You forgot to mention that no other president was married to a big furry beast who gets to travel the worlds on our dime.

452 I used to work for a guy that was born and raised in WV and he said he
had to go out of state to avoid marrying a cousin, unfortunately he
married a gal from Kentucky

Was he pulling your leg?

West Virginia may be coal country, but it is also union country. Most of those coal miners are members in the UMW, United Mine Workers.

They have to see the disconnect between union voting instructions (Democrat)and how this sort of thing is affecting their lives (global warming hocus-pocus), but coal mining is not too glamorous and frankly most coal-miners don't want to be doing it and don't really care about passing it on to their kids.

It's easy to mock West Virginia, but it's full of basically nice, hard-working people, who are poorer (on the whole) than most of the rest of the country because West Virginia is a poor state. A pretty place, but a poor state. And the poverty of the state is linked to the dominance of Democrat politics (indirectly) that have dominated the state for a long time. Stockholm symdrome or something like that. They are abused and seem to like it.

I see it in people that are from "Appalachian" parts of Ohio. Loyalty to each other, loyalty to the people who are always promising to make things better and stand up to "The Man", and constantly screwing them over. It's always the "big boys" in Washington, or Wall Street , or somewhere else that are screwing them over. The cognitive dissonance is head-banging weird most days.

Nope, that's real Kay Insane that dropped in to spray us with her spittle while she fantsizes about helping Bill "Airs" [sic]murder 40 million Americans that don't agree withtheir political philosophy. I wonder ifher neighbors know she is a homicidal bitch?

456 K Insane isn't usually that forward. Has she ever mentioned her desire to make the cattle cars run on time explicitly?

I don't remember her ever being quite that ... explicit in her desire to kill the opponents of her collectivist utopia. I think this is an indicator of her desperation, because she is concerned that her God-Kind is going down like a Kenyan prince on a tasty morsel of dog.

I think Ace or a cob-logger needs to smite her with the ban-hammer for this.

457 429 BILL AIRS UNDERESTIMATEDED THE NUMBER OF WHITE NEOCON FUCKS WE HAVE TO ELIMININATE BEFORE WE CAN PROGRESS. HAS TO BE AT LEAST 40 MILLION! THAT WILL LEAVE THE SMART INLIGHTINED PEOPLE LIKE ME IN COMPLETE CONTROL!

I'm sure this is a BS post. Maybe KayinMaine's son is home from college. There are liberals that believe this. There are conservatives that pray for the day they try.

"Dude, you flunked every class you took."

"Oh. Never mind."
