Mitt Romney At The NAACP And Media Malpractice
So Mitt Romney went to talk to the NAACP today. I didn't see the whole speech but it seemed like reasonably good stuff. He focused on family, jobs and education. I didn't see but there were reports he received a good bit of applause when he promised to defend traditional marriage.
Of course the media will not be focusing on that or the applause for charter schools, his invocations of faith or anything else. No, they will focus exclusively on his being booed for saying he'd repeal ObamaCare and that he will do better for blacks than Obama has. While that sort of hackery is to be expected, a couple of outlets are going well over the line. First, ABC News is all in on Obama (warning auto playing video). After focusing on the booing, ABC drops in this little nugget.Romney, a white Mormon whose father ran for president when blacks weren't even allowed to join the priesthood, told Obama's most reliable supporters that they have been let down by the country's first black president.Well then. If fathers and religion are on the table, I look forward to discussing the polygamy of Barack Obama Sr. and the racism of Jeremiah Wright. Oh wait, we can't do that. The added bonus to the auto-play video on the ABC site? Each time Ive opened it up, it starts with an Obama ad hitting Romney. Next is Donna Brazil. She says Romney shouldn't be surprised he was booed, after all "ObamaCare" is a derogatory term (video below the fold). This of course will come as a surprise to Obama's campaign team. Aside from Romney applause lines, what will the media ignore? Obama doesn't have the guts to go to a hostile crowd like this and give a speech. In fact, Obama won't even be addressing the NAACP convention. You'd think sending Job Biden in his place would be enough to turn them against him but it's probably not.

I don't see many blacks swinging to Romney (modern tribalism at work), but I do suspect that they will turn out in fewer numbers now that the shine on the First Black President has dulled a bit.

Few will, but every black voter in FL-NC-PA-VA that Obama loses was otherwise a GUARANTEED voter. These people are not remotely swing votes. They're the safest demographic any president has ever held.

Did Romney go to the NAACP to pick up votes? No. Its just that if he hadn't, he would have been accused of racism if he didn't placate that left wing organization. With all the buzz and anticipation surrounding the final rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court the past week, there has been little attention to an interesting legal development in New Hampshire: On June 18, Governor John Lynch (no relation) signed HB 146 into law and it becomes effective on January 1, 2013. HB 146 concerns “the right of a jury to judge the application of the law in relationship to the facts in controversy.” It’s popularly known as “the jury nullification bill.” In this post, I will try to explain what impact this new law may have in the New Hampshire courts.

OT: I know some moron or ette can help me here. I'm looking for a short story I read some years ago. The plot involves the hanging of a man from a bridge and the man's thoughts as the hanging proceeds. It might be set in the civil war period. The rope breaks and the man thinks he escapes by swimming and avoiding bullets from the bridge. But at the end it turns outthe rope breaking and the escapewas imagined by the man in the instant between the drop and the rope breaking the man's neck.

At the end of the video I saw, they pull out a bit and you can see some of the crowd. Can't tell if they are standing or not--right at the point where the clapping stops and social custom allows one to sit is where the film stops.
There is, however, at least one person you see turn and look down as you would if you were standing and were looking back to find your seat to sit.
Either way, the lefties on my FB have already tried to claim that Mitt bussed in 200 plants to clap for him. (They were also mocking the organ music--as if it was Romney who chose it, not the house band.)

But what I ponder in this little episode is why Romney has chosen to speak at an overtly racist organization (it's literally IN THE NAME) - apparently soliciting support,or at least trying toweaken support for his opponent - and why no politicians who go there ever call them out on it.
But on the subject of Obama's father, the ultimate conclusion is that Obama's parents were not LEGALLY married, and so while Obama is not the "first black" president (as the people who constantly lecture on being "color blind" constantly enjoy professing), heIS both the first biracial and the first illegitimate (i.e., "bastard") president.

Nobody in the crowd is likely to swing their vote to Romney as a result of the speech, but that wasn't really the purpose behind it.

It is not about the "black vote." I do think it is a gesture of respect to those blacks who have bravely decided to align with our side. I think it would have been a snub for him to turn down the invite and would have made it harder for some of our allies in the black community to make any sort of case for Romney.
It's about the Independent/squishy white guilt voters.
Also, from what I'm reading on twitter, quite a bit of his stuff *was* well-received, especially the traditional marriage (take that people who hate the "so cons") and school choice stuff.

Romney should have adjusted his speech some, considering the audience. Instead of saying he's just going to repeal Obamacare, he should have started by saying that, yes, there are some popular parts of the bill that we all like and he would like to keep those (because I think that's true), and while providing affordable health care is something we all agree with and should work towards, there are too many problems with how the AFAis structured...or something like that. I wonder who writes this guy's speeches. He shouldn't pander, but he's got to give consideration to the type of audience he's addressing.
I give Romney credit for going in front of a hostile crowd, something Obama won't do (unless you count that time Chris Mathews said he was facing the "enemy camp" when he went to make a speech at the USNA).

The only reason I was "meh" about Romney doing this speech was because I knew it would be a setup like this by the Obama campaign. If the Romney camp did not expect this to happen, they were fools. BUT....it will ultimately help Romney with the people he needs, those upscale white socially liberal suburban voters. They will (a) appreciate that he went to talk to the black folks, and (b) will be offendedby the booing.

I agree with Hollowpoint, Romney was right to go to the NAACP and give a speech but he did it wrong. Along with the boilerplate he should have added that his father was an early supporter of the Civil Rights movement and that, IIRC, he and his father marched with MLK Jr.And he should have told them that the "modern day Civil Rights movement led by Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton" is not what he marched for or what he believes in. Not reparations, not Affirmative Action (just a fancy way of renaming discrimination), not the constant race-baiting the Dem-Left-White House engages in, etc.. Instead, he still believes a person should be judged by the content of their character. That is what he should have done, take it to them and call them out. He missed a primeopportunity IMHO.

Well, there was some. Pulling the forelock at the Republican Party's record on racial issues not being perfect from the NAACP perspective. His call for federal education spending, shouts out to his liberal Dad on race issues and so on.
But given the speaker and the audience, probably about as good as could be expected. He didn't completely crawl.
Also he had a call to save Medicare and Social Security in part by means-testing benefits. Don't think I've seen him stress that before in a high profile speech.

I think the NAACP is playing some power politics and sending out some not-so-subtle messages here. The fact that Romney got invited at all. The polite applause.
The gay rights bloc flexed their muscle last month. Obama needs their money, but he also needs the African-American political machines to get out the vote, and those political machines are not happy with Obama's support for gay rights. Or with the lousy economy. Or bad schools.
I expect some more high profile stuff like this. Prominent meetings between African-American leaders and Romney. Public hesitations to endorse Obama. More blatant tiffs with gay rights groups and teachers unions.

Other than 2008, I don't recall there being a vote for "black leader." The very concept seem to be more ingrained in the psyche of other Americans than in that of black ones.The "black Leaders" are self-appointed and propped up by the media...Fox too. (Yes, I'm talking to you Reilly.)

The no cost was a surprise to me. I believe it's a government program that my mortgage company advised me I was eligible for. I have no idea why because I fit into no category that is in need. I think the mortgage company gets a little money from Uncle Sugar for refinances under this program. Also my rate was probably over some threshold they set.

Besides, we have to elect untrustworthy Republicans to the Senate and a Republican President and HOPE that they'll CHANGE their previous fecklessness and repeal OBAMACARE (sorry about the racism).

I don't like this phrase. China is an important trading partner. He shouldn't encourage anti-trade sentiment just because he likes alliteration.
