| Washington Post: When We Said "Romney's Bain Capital" Outsourced Jobs, We Never Intended To Imply Romney Was Running It At The TimeSome background on this fighting between Romney and the Washington Post on outsourcing: The Washington Post's own fact-checker examined Obama's charge that Romney was involved in outsourcing, and found it misleading enough to rate Four Pinnochios. There simply wasn't any evidence Romney sent jobs overseas. And the ad was deliberately misleading when it attempted to cast jobs outsourced to other companies within the US, using American employees as jobs outsourced to other countries. But then a front-page article ran in the Post, giving Obama the headline he wanted, even though it was contrived just for that purpose. See, before we were discussing whether Romney outsourced jobs overseas from the firms he took over. Well, he didn't, I guess. So the Washington Post tries a new tact -- did he invest in companies that assisted other companies with their outsourcing needs? And thus the headline runs:Romney’s Bain Capital invested in companies that moved jobs overseas That's written to make it sound like it is affirming Obama's charge -- but in fact the companies that Bain invested in were not outsourcing their own employees. They were helping other companies outsource parts of their business. Mitt Romney’s financial company, Bain Capital, invested in a series of firms that specialized in relocating jobs done by American workers to new facilities in low-wage countries like China and India. During the nearly 15 years that Romney was actively involved in running Bain, a private equity firm that he founded, it owned companies that were pioneers in the practice of shipping work from the United States to overseas call centers and factories making computer components, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.Note that the article's attempt to mislead people into thinking Bain was taking American jobs and shipping them overseas worked. The article is deliberately written, and especially headlined, so that a casual reader draws just that conclusion. Even a news organization, like CNN, which really should be more than a casual reader gets it wrong, just as the Washington Post had intended: report first published more than a week ago detailing Bain Capital's record of sending jobs overseas continued to roil on the campaign trail Monday, as President Barack Obama's team contested a fact-check that called into question their attacks on rival Mitt Romney, who headed Bain for more than a decade. The original article, published in the Washington Post on June 22, said that Bain Capital, a firm Romney co-founded in 1984 and left in 1999, had invested in multiple companies that "specialized in relocating jobs done by American workers to new facilities in low-wage countries like China and India."Again, we're actually not talking about Romney taking over a company and sending jobs overseas. We're talking about a couple of companies that already existed, which Bain invested in, which provided a business-to-business service for other companies, to outsource some of their business. And "outsource" can mean "outsource to another company in America," by the way, though they're hoping you think "outsource" means "Mexico and India." Now Romney lobbied to get the Washington Post to retract this Obama-coordinated article. For one thing, he notes that "outsource" is different than "off-shore." For another thing, he says he wasn't even running Bain when they invested in these companies. The Washington Post conspired with the Obama campaign to provide a headline which was misleading enough that Obama could use it in his campaign ads making a different claim (that Romney raided companies, then sent off American jobs to foreign countries). It refused to retract. Now the Washington Post's fact-checker, who caused all these problems by telling the truth, has to cover for his own employer's partisanship, and also pretend there is no dispute between himself and the newspaper on this point. And here he gets dishonest, because he claims: The actual [Washington Post article in question] article, in fact, does not say that transfers of U.S. jobs took place while Romney ran the private equity firm of Bain Capital. … The Obama campaign moved quickly to define what the article said, claiming that this transfer of jobs took place while Romney ran Bain. That’s not what the original article said. The article does not say transfers of U.S. jobs took place while Romney ran the private equity firm of Bain Capital? Maybe not, but it sure implied the shit out of it in the headline: Romney’s Bain Capital invested in companies that moved jobs overseas Why is "Romney's" in that headline if they didn't mean to suggest that Romney ran the firm at that time? He's also wrong to say the Obama campaign quickly moved to re-define that headline to suit its own purposes. No. I believe this was done deliberately, to provide Obama with exactly that cover. So the Washington Post can say "Gee, they took our headline and used it to mean something else." That headline was written for the precise purpose of being used to mean something else. I think Nolte's quite right-- the Washington Post is coordinating with team Obama, negotiating what their headlines could/should say, to help him. Comments1

While some may say that the Romney campaign may just be pandering to people who are dealing with an emergency, there are plenty of stories of how Romney has handled emergencies in the past. One such story being the story of a co-worker’s daughter who was kidnapped while out partying in New York. He shut down Bain, flew the employees up to New York City, set up a nerve center, and canvassed the city with flyers until the girl was found and returned home to her anxious parents.
This is who Romney is. Obama wants you to buy a $30 T-shirt. I don’t know about you, but this says a great deal about the character of these two men to me. You can decide for yourselves. Posted by: Billy Carter at July 02, 2012 02:28 PM (e8kgV) 15
Obamacare Is Not Enough here's the latest scheme from the moonbats: Subject: Fighting fires without health insurance [redacted], Many of the men and women hired by the federal government to fight the wildfires in Colorado, and around the country, are doing so without health insurance. They are classified as temporary employees by the Forest Service, and as such, are not eligible for federal health care or retirement benefits. It would take an act of Congress to fix this. While Republicans in Congress don't want to pass any expansion in public employee benefits, refusing to help the firefighters who are risking life and limb in order to save entire towns in one of the important swing states in the nation could be politically disastrous for them in an election year. Putting pressure on Republicans and congressional leaders to help firefighters get affordable health care starts by showing them tens of thousands of voters are paying attention. Please, sign our petition to congressional leaders demanding they pass legislation making all federal firefighters eligible for health insurance. From Kevin Williamson at NRO: http://tiny.cc/m60tgw
Because the Obama campaign knows that one of its most important constituencies is economically illiterate yokels — a demographic to which the president himself apparently belongs — it is on the airwaves claiming “Romney’s never stood up to China — all he’s ever done is send them our jobs.’’ (Whose?) The Obama campaign cites a Washington Post story on the subject, and the Romney campaign has noted that the folks over at WaPo did not distinguish between outsourcing and offshoring (and, indeed, the story is not a very smart one — do read it and see). Obama responded thus: “Yesterday, (Romney's) advisers tried to clear this up by telling us that there was a difference between ‘outsourcing’ and ‘offshoring.’ Seriously. You can’t make that up.”And indeed you wouldn’t have to make it up, because it is a real thing: different words with different meanings. (Seriously, can we get this guy a library card?) Well your sample is not likely to hit a cross section all on its own. So they have different templated groups. All Adults All Registered Voters And Likely Voters. The third and final being the closest to what you get on election day. The former what they like to use in the runup to show inflated dem support. And some pollsters go even beyond that and oversample to make dems even more prominent. When you are doing that, you are just torturing the numbers until they confess what you want them to. What if Republicans tried telling the truth for a change?
We are capitalists. We believe capitalism, more than any other system, provides the greatest good for the greatest number of people. We do not apologize for that. Companies that aren't allowed to out-source are companies that aren't allowed to operate as efficiently as they can. The stockholders of those companies will suffer as a result. Those stockholders include the majority of Americans who own stock through their 401K's and other retirement plans. We are capitalists. We support out-sourcing when that is the most efficient way for businesses to operate. The end. Posted by: Wapo at July 02, 2012 03:02 PM (IoNBC) 113

It was mainly the teachers' unions that were behind that, and many taxpayers have found out that if the school districts get the concessions from the unions, they can balance budgets without laying off teachers, and thus keep class sizes within reason. By the way, if we are going to go back into the past of our Presidential candidates and judge the effectiveness of their prior activities -- i.e., Romney's tenure at Bain Capital and whether he helped produce jobs -- why can't we judge Obama's tenure as a "community organizer" in the black community on the South Side of Chicago? Does it matter that, after decades of "organizing" by people like Obama, the South Side of Chicago remains one of the most dysfunctional communities in America?
I mean, if we're going to poke holes in the patent success of Romney's career before politics, isn't it fair to drive a truck through the gaping hole of the abject failure of Obama's career before politics? Posted by: The Regular Guy at July 02, 2012 03:19 PM (qHCyt) 131
Michigan Rising, an independent group that had set a goal of gathering 1 million signatures on petitions to force a recall vote on Mr. Snyder, said Thursday it will stop its recall campaign immediately. The organization’s leaders said in a web post that as of June 4 it had collected only 2,079 names on 655 petitions, well short of a target of 200,000 signatures by June 1.
“It has become abundantly clear that Michigan Rising was not going accomplish its goal of recalling Governor Snyder,” Michigan Rising’s communications director Bruce Fealk said in a statement. the blog at wsj.com Interesting how that didn't get much "copy"... Why capitalism will never regulate itself for the Greater Good: There are no adequate consequences for CEOs who wreck companies and bankrupt their workers. When you’re sittin’ on a 7 figure salary with bodacious perks for quarterly profits to the stock holders (never mind that you reduce your labor force below optimum productivity (but increase goals), cut corners on quality control, reduce benefits and COL increases (because, “Hey, it’s a tough economy and you workers should be happy to just have a job…”). By the time your methods collapse the company, you’ve glided down to the Caymans with your golden parachute
I know I’m “behind enemy lines” here, but seriously, are you ignoring the impact of the lack of cooperation in DC engineered by the republican extremists? A republican backed settlement to the debt ceiling debacle last year was torpedoed by Rubio saying “Kill it” to his Young Gun followers as soon as Obama got behind it. We need centrists in congress, not extremists who play chicken with the economy. Posted by: Fly In The Ointment at July 10, 2012 09:19 AM (o2CI1) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.2596 seconds. |
