Oh Noes! Mitt Romney's Never Been To Wa-Was Before Or Something

If you're unfamiliar with the ordering process at a regional restaurant chain, you're too out of touch to be President or something.

First of all, how often do you think Andrea Mitchell and Allen Greenspan are chowing down at a nearby Wa-Was (I gather from sources, it's a Mid-Atlantic Philadelphia area chain)? My prediction....NEVER.

Beyond that, this is a transparent attempt to catch Mitt in some sort of George H.W. Bush grocery scanner moment. Like this moment of faux outrage, that bit of fiction was simply the work of the liberal media in service to their hero of the moment.

When asked for comment about Mitt's reaction to the automated ordering machine, Barack Obama responded, "Like those lousy ATMs, the ordering terminals at Wan-Wa's are costing real Americans and the illegals I'm immunizing from deportation, jobs".

(It's quite possible I made that Obama quote up).

The Obama (pbuh) campaign is trying for a wall-to-wall, chaotic attack on Romney, assuming that the sheer volume of it will sway voters.

It won't work, because Romney has been pretty good about staying on message, and his message is backed up by most people's experiences. The economy sucks, and there is no way to fool most people that it actually is wonderful.

Last Saturday night there was a young chick, wearing pasties on huge hooters, that were completely tattoo's, like an arm sleeve.

But when you're in a packed Wawa at lunchtime, you really appreciate how fast they get those orders out.

Wawa is the only place on my way home from work where I can pick up anything for dinner, so we have sandwich nights a lot. And their soups and pre-made salads are really good too.

212 WaWa is the BESTEST and MOST AWESOMEST convenience store ever. They're all over PA, South Jersey, Maryland, VA and apparently they've just opened one in FL as well. I wish they'd come up to Northern NJ or NYC area (the closest they've come is ONE store in Parsippany, just off the western end of 280 - Exit 1 for New Road if you're curious). All of their food is cheap and wonderful and tastes ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY OMG!!!!

Last time we drove down to FL I was surprised to see the chain had made inroads pretty far south, NC maybe? Forget Facebook, if Wawa ever goes public, I'm in.

218 WaWa is a well and tightly run chain from everything I've seen in hundreds of visits over many years and some business interactions. The automated ordering system is fast; and although I was an initial skeptic, IMHO, it's not hard to use (and I'm a 50+ technophobe). Employees are really polite as well. They seemed to have kind of squeezed 7-11 out as the dominant player in the DE, PA C-store market.
FWIW, they had pretty bad soft pretzels, and a lot of people griped. They changed and now have decent ones - not great, but decent, again IMO. Managerswill listen to customers' feedback, unique in this day and age.

221 Wawa (note - no hyphen, only one capitalized "w", no "h"s, and it's a Native American word for "goose", hence the goose in the logo) is THE BEST. And I say that as someone who was 30 before she ever visited one, so this is not childhood sentimentality talking here. Sure, in PA they don't sell beer, but they are always CLEAN, fully staffed, complete with lots of fresh fruit and healthy snacks (in addition to all the junk), a full sandwich/hot bar, good self-serve coffee in a variety of flavors (yes, I own the 64-oz Wawa coffee mug), fee-free ATMs, and some stores sell gas and have nice public restrooms as well. What more could you ask for? The touchscreen ordering is great if you know how to use it - walk in, go straight to touchscreen, order food, get receipt, go pick out everything else you want, pay, get receipt stamped, and by that time your food is usually ready. Wawa chicken salad sandwiches on kaiser rolls are AWESOME. No, I don't work there, but I probably know the store nearest me (within walking distance) well enough that I could help restock or ring people up if theyneeded me...

222 All I know about Wawa is that I can't get a bottled Starbucks Frappucino or double-shot in the one in Gambrills, MD; they only seem to have store-brand (which is awful). Bananas are really cheap though, and the sandwiches are good (but if you want chicken, Royal Farms is still your best bet).

225 It's a fake. MSNBC took the clip out of context. The "amazing" comment wasn't about WaWa's. It was about how amazing the difference is between the private sector and the public sector under Obama.

Right Scoop has the full clip.

226 Doubt they will ever go public from what I've heard. I doubt they have to.
To give another idea how they do business: They needed a store in a certain location. It had become very expensive to secure a couple of acres with appropriate zoning at a prominent intersection. Wawa resolved this by buying about 50 acres of land where they had learned roads were being put in. They rezoned the land, took the best acreage and put up a state of the art "Super Wawa" (gas pumps, large store, etc.), then sold the surrounding acreage for far more per acre than they had paid for the original property. One of the top stores in the chain now, and they did very well on the real estate transaction as well.
No one was swindled or hurt, nothing shady at all, just the market working. Amazing thing, that.

227 I am proud to say I have no idea what a WaWa is or how to order one or at/in one.... or if I should even want to, for that matter.

I can , however, balance a checkbook and live within a prescribed budget.

Clearly, I am better at managing my own life than the O in residence

OK, went online and the only states listed in wa wa's store locater were:
(drum roll....) NJ, DE, MD, VA, PA
So why does Andrea Mitchell think someone should know about Wa Wa 's???
Oh, she just heard of it, too, but it looked like a way to put a knot on Mitt's head?

for those of us in America's Heartland, not being intimately familiar with the NYC/DC is a feature, not a bug...

Posted by: phreshone at June 18, 2012 05:40 PM (Bxm/r)

229 Why you may ask, Why does WaWa have a machine to order subs? Because unlike 7-11 WaWa makes and sells pretty decent subs or as they call them in south Jersey, Hoagies. South Jersey is a Meca of hoagies. White House subs in Atlantic City has served 5 presidents, The Beatles, Sinatra, Ali, Fraiser, etc. etc. etc.

WaWa was originally a Dairy that opened stores to sell it's milk or so the story goes. The machines in question are not common throughout the nation.

230 Hey Andrea, how familiar are you with a supermarket chain called Vallarta?

No? Didn't think so. You wouldn't like their primary customer base. But they've gone from nothing to a major player in the LA County grocery market in the last decade.

Before 2000 had you ever eaten at an In and Out or a Tommy's? Can you even describe what distinguishes these two burger joint chains?

Despite growing up near one of the oldest In and Out locations, I never ate at one until the late 90s, when they were starting to go national.

I can play this game all day. There are plenty of places that mean nothing to anyone not from LA and more that were purely regional until just a few years ago.

Hey, Andrea, did you know a Ralphs supermarket in LA was the first business in America to have a dedicated parking lot for automobiles? We like that out in LA, where we like our cars and the freedom that goes with them, unlike urban hive dwellers such as yourself.

231 That clinches it... I can no longer vote for Romney in good conscience.

Oh, and Andrea Mitchell can kiss my Wa-Wa.

232 FWIW, Wa-Wa has expanded at least as far down as Virginia Beach, where I live. There are a ton of them in the area, all having opened in the last few years. I like the place a lot.
