Overnight Open Thread

I know you all are aware of sequestration and the looming defense cuts but I think this is the first article I've seen that actually talks about the effect of the cuts downstream from those cuts. The Disaster That Is Sequestration.

the sequester will result in the loss of about a million jobs in 2013 and 2014 and America's GDP will decline by half a percent. Moreover, of these million lost jobs, it can safely be asserted that at least half will come from the non-defense sector. In other words, the sequester is not just a defense problem that should agitate only hawks. It is a national problem, and it demands immediate relief.

Oh, and this just might affect the election in November.
In addition to its impact on the government's budget, the sequester will also trigger the WARN Act, which requires employers to give a minimum of sixty days notice to private and public sector employees whose jobs are being targeted for possible termination. Those politicians seeking re-election to national office should take note that Nov. 2, 60 days before Jan. 2, when the sequester comes into force, is just four days before election day.

Shoes

Oh-oh. I'm bringing up a shoe topic but it's pretty interesting. You Can Judge 90 Percent Of A Stranger's Personal Characteristics Just By Looking At Their Shoes. You can also figure out who the air marshal is on your flight by the shoes. But I digress. Some of this is pretty obvious like this:

Expensive shoes belonged to high earners, flashy and colorful footwear belonged to extroverts and shoes that were not new but appeared to be spotless belonged to conscientious types.

Not exactly groundbreaking data there. But this was interesting.
Practical and functional shoes generally belong to agreeable people, ankle boots fit with more aggressive personalities and uncomfortable looking shoes were worn by calm personalities.

People with "attachment anxiety" or people that were most worried about their relationships generally had brand new and well-kept shoes. Researchers suggest that this may be because they worry so much about their appearance and what others may think of them.

Not surprisingly, liberal thinkers, who many think of as flip-flop wearing hippies, wear shabbier and less expensive shoes.

Math Is Cool

Hmmm. I'm gonna have to file this one away for future use. Physicist Uses Math To Beat Traffic Ticket.

After thinking Krioukov ran through a stop sign, a nearby police officer pulled him over and issued him a citation. According to Krioukov's paper, however, three physical phenomena combined at just the right time and misled the officer.

When Krioukov drove toward the stop sign the police officer was approximating Krioukov's angular velocity instead of his linear velocity. This happens when we try to estimate the speed of a passing object, and the effect is more pronounced for faster objects.

Trains, for instance, appear to be moving very slowly when they are far away, but they speed past when they finally reach us. Despite these two different observations at different distances, the train maintains a roughly constant velocity throughout its trip.

In Krioukov's case, the police cruiser was situated about 100 feet away from a perpendicular intersection with a stop sign. Consequently, a car approaching the intersection with constant linear velocity will rapidly increase in angular velocity from the police officer's perspective.

Similarly, if a car approaches the stop sign with constant velocity but brakes quickly before reaching the sign, the angular velocity will rapidly increase before stopping momentarily.

10 First off... the shoe article is complete bullshit.

I am not wealthy but have a knack for finding authentic designer shoes at deeply discounted rates. And, if I am going to a terminal for a meeting, I am required to wear "comfortable" shoes. If I am running to the store, I am wearing $2 Old Navy flip flops.

So, in the course of a week, I might wear shoes priced anywhere from $2 to $400.

Finger and toe nails are the real indicator. They should have studied that instead.

I thought so too, but from the very limited guy perspective. When I buy shoes, which I do pretty much only when the old ones wear out, I buy ones that are comfortable, not expensive, and not hideous or effeminate. I'd imagine most guys do the same. That doesn't leave a lot of clues for the shoe Sherlocks out there.

20 GREAT content tonight. Thank you!

Shoes...

I have a "thing" for them (men's shoes). If my man would wear the right shoes, he'd be getting it every night. (Well, honestly, I never turn him down anyway.)

I like ankle boots for myself. No surprise I guess.

People do judge you by your shoes. Husband worked at a place a ways back where the guys really critiqued each other's shoes (no, not gay, but a lot of business types). I find it hard to take women who wear those (hideous) gladiator-styled shoes (or Tom's with glitter) seriously.

30 No 50,000 word review of Prometheus?

Haven't seen it yet myself. I'm not expecting much to be honest. I can give you a couple of reviews of movies I have seen recently:

American Battleship: Sucked. Bad. I mean worse than you would think even when you know going in it stars Mario Van Peeples. Yup, that bad.

Ghostrider Spirit of Vengence: Boring, predictable, and that was the upside. They might want to consider replacing Cage with Mario Van Peeples - the acting would have been as good and I'll bet Mario works cheaper.

The Avengers: Overall I liked this one, some great interplay that is somewhat unexpected, especially with the Hulk. Some minor annoyances, such as some seriously ridiculous moralizing by Tony Stark which I found really irritating since Iron Man has always been a personal favorite. But if you set that aside all in all it's a good flick.

58 42-if it makes a difference, big dogs like Great Danes or Newfies are generally big couch potatoes, and don't really need big yards, as long as you walk them a couple of times a day. And in the summer, you only take them out to potty, and run them back into the AC. Our newf hardly ever barks, unless the shepherd see a squirrel and goes berserk. Then he seems to think his voice is needed as well. But he's clearly succumbing to peer pressure. An only Newf or Dane would likely never make a sound.

Check out Big Dogs Huge Paws, which is a giant breed rescue-they have tons of danes and other dogs that need adoption, and the adoption fee is a donation to the organization, so you can write it off on your taxes. Lotsa good!!

I have a working theory that the aggressiveness and the problems everyone hears about is a function of socioeconomic factors that are not pc to report. New York, especially manhattan, is overrun with pits, nearly all rescues and there are rarely if ever bites or attacks. I bet if you sort for socioeconomic factors you will find the dog problems are the same as human on human violence problems and have the same socioeconomic factors.

90 I have a working theory that the aggressiveness and the problems everyone hears about is a function of socioeconomic factors that are not pc to report. New York, especially manhattan, is overrun with pits, nearly all rescues and there are rarely if ever bites or attacks. I bet if you sort for socioeconomic factors you will find the dog problems are the same as human on human violence problems and have the same socioeconomic factors.

The Pit breed is really no more aggressive than other dogs persee, they just have the ability to do a lot more damage than a lot of other breeds when provoked.

Problem is that Pit's, because of their popularity as guard dogs, etc have in many cases been interbred, which can do really bad things. Same thing happened with rots - most who have been properly bred and raised are the sweetest dogs you can imagine. Sadly though interbreeding and poor environment are far more commonplace for the breed.

So like them a Pit if raised in a normal, loving environment has a much better chance of turning out to be good dog. Raised by the types of folks you mentioned earlier.. yikes.

Yes, I accept all that. I believe that a well-brought-up and well-treated pit is mostly OK. 110 The thing about pits is, like all pure-breeds, they have tendencies. The person who owns them needs to know what they're doing.

What frustrates me is that in this desire to rescue pitbulls has led to well-meaning people who are not qualified to own them getting one. Then disaster strikes and there is a tragedy.

A lab or golden can take a lot more mistreatment (or neglect) than a pitbull can. Sadly, suburban families wind up neglecting many good dogs. But when they do it with a pitbull, there's a much higher chance of a problem.

I would make the distinction between "aggressiveness" and "drive". Pits are no more aggressive, meaning inclined to attack, than many other breeds. Pits and other dogs, such as german shepherds, and belgian malnois, are high drive, meaning they have a high tolerance for pain and are hard to switch off once engaged.

Disagree. Smart munitions are the current thing we need. You gonna drop a vagueness bomb from a drone? You gonna limit yourself to WW2 notions of accuracy (they were insanely inaccurate)? I don't get it.

Nor do I get why we need to have a premodern set of weaponry merely because we are so addicted to a European Welfare State model. A proper budget is easy, with the right mindset. Start with what's coming in (revenue). Allocate what you need to defend the country with the most up-to-date weapons in the world. Add in some very serious paydown of our ridiculously-inflated debt. Then see what you have leftover for the nanny state, regulators, unnecessary Federal intrusions in education and housing and college loans, without borrowing even one thin dime. Then you have something.

Oh, and Chamberlain's
record on defense spending was mixed - cutting early on and increasing
after the mid 30s - in the face of liberal opposition - naturally

Although, the wise Latina should have recused herself, and that would make it 6-2 or 5-3.

Yeah, well, that's the whole point, that he could fall to his death. Could he fall to his death being tethered? Maybe, but the chances of it are a whole lot less with the tether which pretty much defeats the entire purpose of being a "death defying daredevil" If he wants to defy death, go out there without a tether, if he wants to be the guy that did something a little stupid but not very risky or death defying, go out there with a tether.

Chemjeff-- volunteer to visit and walk the dogs at your local no-kill animal shelter. The one in my town is always looking for volunteers to help feed and play with the dogs. That way you can "try out" lots of dogs until you find one you "click" with. And also, all the no-kill shelters I know will take the pet back if things don't work out. I know the cat shelter I work with has taken back cats that had been adopted-- in one case it was several years after the adoption and the owner died suddenly. Good luck-- there is a doggeh out there just waiting for a good owner that would be the right dog for you.

254 215-me and my daughter, actually!!!

She is not doing well, and the doctor here won't do her surgery, because he hasn't worked on kids in a long, long time-he mainly has old men with prostrate trouble for patients, with the occasional women with kidney cancer like me. My daughter is a fluke in all this. So, we will probably have to take her to Univ. Alabama for the surgery, which won't happen until late August. Which will then screw up her senior year of high school.

Trying not to worry about that, I think her being alive is far more important than school at this point, but try telling that to the school. We talked with them today, and they were trying to get her to take extra classes this summer before her surgeries, to "get ahead." When I mentioned that she is sick and feels like crap, they were really only concerned that she "get all her credits."

I hate public school, but Florida is a difficult place to homeschool, and she refuses to do that again.

Sorry for the run down, but in spite of all that, we are doing good.

Why on earth do you have much of a need of drones? The terrorists are in Fallajuh? Call in the B-52s. More rubble, much less trouble.

And yes, WWII notions of war are exactly what we need. If you are at war you don't spend your own lives and treasure to protect the opposition's civilians.

And re Chamberlain, no he wasn't Churchill, but he wasn't the pacifist he was made out to be.

Comparing 1938 with 1939, under Chamberlain remember, the UK went from 7 to 16% of GDP being spent on defense. Less then Germany...but not nothing. 1940 would see that rise to 48%. And Chamberlain's decision to expand the British fighter core would come in very handy after the Fall of France.

And to the larger point, that doesn't mean Churchill wasn't right in the lead up to the war, and Chamberlain not wrong. But Chamberlain was less wrong then most of the rest of the British political class.

264 Trying not to worry about that, I think her being alive is far more important than school at this point, but try telling that to the school. We talked with them today, and they were trying to get her to take extra classes this summer before her surgeries, to "get ahead." When I mentioned that she is sick and feels like crap, they were really only concerned that she "get all her credits."

They are worried about their funding. Every kid not "getting all their credits" counts against them in this regard.

Hope your daughter gets to feeling better, she'll be in our thoughts and prayers.

She is not doing well, and the doctor here won't do her surgery,
because he hasn't worked on kids in a long, long time-he mainly has old
men with prostrate trouble for patients, with the occasional women with
kidney cancer like me. My daughter is a fluke in all this. So, we will
probably have to take her to Univ. Alabama for the surgery, which won't
happen until late August. Which will then screw up her senior year of
high school.

Sounds awful. Take it from one who has had serious surgery, settle for nothing less than a surgeon who has performed the operation in question so many times that his very muscles know what to do. No substitute for experience in this area. Drive as far as you need to, to find that surgeon.

Gulfport AL......
My whole family (all 14 of us, parents, siblings, assorted spawn) spent a week there in 2003. Had a blast. Got one hellacious storm though. Only time in my life I have ever seen a tornado. Which is weird since I live in Indiana.

Posted by: Madamemayhem at June 15, 2012 11:58 PM (iRgZG)

313 261-yep, gulfport, AL was hit pretty hard by KAtrina, along with the rest of the Gulf.

****

I did, unintentionally, a hurricane tour the Spring following Katrina and as much as I despise Shep Smith, the media didn't even begin to touch the damage that was done, particularly in MS. It was truly awe inspiring and that was months after it hit.

I was headed to Texas and pulled off I-10 around midnight and into Biloxi looking for a room for the night. The road into Biloxi did this weird little twist right over the shoreline and directed all traffic to a huge casino. It was jam packed with cars and I was in no mood so I turned around and headed west to find a room. It was really dark and kind of eerie but I couldn't really see anything. A couple of miles from the casino was a Hampton Inn and I stayed there for the night. I awoke in the morning and opened the curtains to look out over the beautiful, calm gulf waters, grabbed my bags, and headed out the back door to my car...and that's when it hit me.

That building was the only thing standing for blocks!

It was...there's no word for it...maybe, astounding.

I spent the next four days driving the coastline and taking photos: Gulfport, Bay St. Louis, New Orleans, Baton Rouge...

As long as I live I will never forget what I saw.

In Bay St. Louis I took a photo of a wood-framed house. It was about a mile from the bay shore, which itself was at an elevation of about 15'-20' above the bay. The house had been completely run through by the water and all that remained was the outside walls of the house. In the mess of tangled trees there was a sign hanging on one of them, asking that it not be destroyed in the cleanup: "Do not remove. Planted by grandson".

They had lost everything and clung to the one remnant of what had once been their home. It brought me to tears.

349 I'm about as much a defense hawk as you'll find, but if sequestration meant that the voting public learned that you could make an actual, real dollar, reduction in spending, I'd be OK with the short term hit the defense budget would take.

Yes, I understand that even a short term reduction in defense spending can and will have long term consequences.

376 DOD spending is an EXPENSE, not a factor in true gross domestic "product". Nothing funded via taxes is a "product" in the economy, rather those things are a national expense. The only way tightening expenditures relative to DOD might effect GDP is associated with non-domestic military sales of tax-payer funded equipment associated with profits accumulated by the defense contractors who were paid to develop that shit via Treasury funds and are selling it elsewhere.

I am NOT in favor of defense cuts in ANY form, except where the programs are re-dunk-ulous (Future Combat Systems, Paladin, JTRS, etc.), but the characterization of lowered government spending equaling less gross domestic product is absurd on its face.

385 I'm confused as to how I feel about this.

UK judge orders a dying woman to be force-fed to keep her alive. She is fully conscious, admits that she doesn't want to die, but is tired of living with her condition and wants to be left alone to meet her fate. Her family supports her decision.

The catch?

She's anorexic. She hasn't eaten solid food in a year.

It's not like she has incurable cancer. She is starving herself to death. She knows she is killing herself, and doesn't want to die. So, wouldn't the "cure" to her present situation be to EAT SOMETHING?

I don't mean to over-simplify, because I know it is a debilitating condition, but how the hell can her family support her "decision" to never eat again?

That's not a "decision", it's a mental illness.

399 The list of airplane sites: number 5 is the Museum of Flight in Seattle, and it says there is an "M-21 Blackbird" there. The photo shows it.

Actually, it's the MD-21 Blackbird, the only one in the world. It was part of a research program. They had this idea that the Blackbird would carry a supersonic drone, and would launch the drone, the drone would go take photos, the drone would fly over the ocean and drop the film and the Navy would recover it. Only a few drones were made, and only a tiny handful of the drones still exist. That Blackbird is the only surviving M-21; and it has one of those rare drones mounted on it, making it an MD-21.

The drones didn't work out, which is why they are so rare. Separating a drone from a Blackbird at supersonic speed turned out to be rather dicey. So they skipped the drones and just kept having humans fly over things to take photos.

It's not like anyone had a weapon that could hit a Blackbird that is cruising at speed and altitude. I'm not sure anyone has such a weapon now!

Oh, also at the museum they had an Air Force cartoon. It showed an air-traffic controller at his desk. Radio: "Requesting permission to change altitude to 70,000 feet." ATC guy: "Well, if you think you can make it, go ahead and try." Radio: "Roger, descending to 70,000 feet." (Look of shock on the face of the ATC guy)

He used an "unimproved" (lol!) dirt strip once in a while that was about 10 miles from the family ranch in NoCal that is to this day marked as federal property, but not fenced off or any dick-move shit like that. Once, and I think it was in the late 70's, he saw a Blackbird trailing smoke hit that strip. He said within 30 minutes there were enough "gubmint" people there to fill the Pauline Pavilion. Within 3 hours, as he told it, that bird was gone and so was everyone else.

He told me he thought it was a bailout strip for Beale AFB. I always thought he was full of it when I was a kid. Maybe not anymore.

If worn properly, with the correct fit and color matching, they look really sharp.

Khaki is great, but is the go-to for those unable or unwilling to make the occasional effort to add a bit of style to their wardrobe.

An occasional bit of funk or style isn't a bad thing.

Best worn with loafers of some sort.

442 HH,

Back in its heyday, sure, the SR-71 was effectively invulnerable to the SA-2 and for the most part, the SA-5 (which was actually developed specifically to counter the SR-71).

But starting in the early to mid 1990s, the latest Russian SAMs such as the late model SA-10s had far, far more speed than any jet. And I mean, ANY jet.

That doesn't mean they'd bag 'em every time. Just that eventually, they'd get a Blackbird. And it just wasn't worth it.

You are probably right, but do we really know how fast that plane could fly?

Just an example. When they decided to retire the SR-71, it made an air-speed record over the U.S, from L.A. to D.C.

I was living in L.A. at the time. As the plane crossed over, I heard a double sonic boom. The only other times I've heard that is when the Shuttle was coming in from space to land at Edwards AFB. And the Shuttle was coming in very, very fast.

Can't recall what the speed rccord was that day. I'm remembering 108 minutes coast to coast, but it could have been less.

Hell of a plane, that's for sure.

I buy designer shoes at great prices by doing lots of research and then checking out sites like Ebay. Fine women's shoes have almost paper thin soles which is fine for wealthy women who only wear them a few times, but I have to make them last. So all my shoes go to the cobbler to have the rubber sole added. I still remember how great I felt the time I took in a pair of shoes that had been a particularly good deal, a beautiful pair of shoes, and the cobbler exclaimed about how incredible they were. "Where did you get these?!"

I guess if a cobbler compliments a shoe, it must be pretty good.

For the record, this moron hopped on over to Niagara Falls for the Big Event. Found a spot on Goat Island where I could see about half of the cable with binoculars, but some random guy old me that the wires I was seeing were for camera. So we watched it on a Jumbotron, and went down and got a close look at the site after people started clearing out. Turned out the random guy was wrong (argh), but it was cool to at least be part of the crowd in an internationally famous event.

BTW, as I understand it, it was one of Wallenda's sponsors who insisted on the tether, not a govt (go figure!). He said he was actually kind of uncomfortable with wearing it, and was a little concerned about it hindering him. Maybe it's just as well - kinda sick to make a spectacle of watching something because someone could die.

It's pretty impressive (although admittedly pointless) nonetheless. If you haven't been to the Falls, all that water falling off a cliff represents the kind of vast power that is impossible to ignore. Between the roar it makes, plus the spray from the water crashing every which way, and even the bizarre wind currents it churns up - it would be very intimidating. Oh, plus you're about 200 feet up in the air!

Oh, and the event relates to shoes! He was wearing custom shoes his mom made from specific animal hides that cling well on a wet cable. So they should add something to that stupid article that says what you can gather about someone if they're wearing homemadeshoes made of elk hide (or whatever it was)...

(Perhaps you've heard.) There are wild animals. I work at the university, right in the middle of town. Thursday, a black bear cub ran right by me. I've been chased by a moose and had to dive into spruce trees. Bout ten years ago, a guy was killed by a moose, right here on the UAA campus. Outmaneuver a thousand pounds of angry meat with antlers while wearing 4" heels. Anyway, if we were all fucking fashion plates, we'd be frozen, stomped, eaten by bears and shat off cliffs. Speaking of fashion, or shoes anyway, Anchorage, AK was selected by some
high minded bunch of fashionasshats as the worst dressed city in the
USA.

Anchorage sounds like an awesome place, and I take that designation by the fashionasshats as a sign of that.

533 So, Alien 3.

I liked it.

The FX surely suck, but overall I liked it. I don't think it deserves the hate it gets. It's not GREAT or anything, but it doesn't suck. It's a perfectly good space horror movie.

Sigourney Weaver looked as weird as ever in it.

Maybe that was the fan's comaplaint. Maybe if they had made an Alien movie without Sigourney...oh, shit, right...Prometheus.

Anywho, it's good.

Dear Adriane,

It's your fault. Please send $5.50. You need to help a wigga out.

Thanks,

I saw Karl Wallenda walk across Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia between games of a double header back in the 70s. I was probably more nervous than he was.

540 I see you "limited government" conservatives are opposed to budget cuts. Compare that sequestration with the amount of growth the government has had and talk to me then.

Posted by: stan at June 16, 2012 08:40 AM (13B6x)

541 The ones wringing their hands over sequestration are the same people that thrust it upon us . . . politicians. If the people are incapable of understanding the ineptness, egocentricity and blatant stupidity of wormy politicians then they deserve whatever fate befalls them.
