Is Winning the Media Day Still Necessary? Is It Even Possible?

Kaus wonders.

According to the Rushfield Theory of Buzzdeath–that in the New Media environment, generating “buzz” typically produces a counter-reaction that leaves you worse off than before–this is a mistake for Obama. … Actually, rushing out a “major” speech on the economy is a mistake even under the older theory that a President can seem desperate and overxposed. … Why does Obama have to win the week, or the month? It’s June! Obama doesn’t have to win June. …

As I noted, Jonathan Alter panned the speech; so did another liberal from Daily Beast. That left MSNBC's hosts to spin furiously that the speech was amazing.

Apparently hectored by Obama partisans, Jonathan Alter indicated that he was aware of the Full Metal Cocoon the left had built around itself.

Just cheerleading BO doesn’t help him. He needs a sharper, more cogent message with some memorable lines. I ain’t walking my criticism back

— Jonathan Alter (@jonathanalter) June 14, 2012

Well, what he actually needs are better facts, but as those are unlikely to be forthcoming, sure, he needs "memorable lines." For all the good that will do.

Well, that, and an engaged and active Conservative Alternate Media. Now, however, the Truth sleeps in its shoes, so it can hit the ground running (I'm taking that way to far, aren't I?).

So- yes, he has to "Win the Media Day" because that's the only way Democrats win- when they can fill the air with so many lies that no one knows the truth. No, he can't actually do it, because the Democrats don't own all the channels of communication anymore.

A 54 minute clunker like this is the inevitable result of years of hangers on telling you that you're just not hitting the right notes. That shit works in 2008 when you have no record. It doesn't work now. Obama is the 80's band playing the only power ballad anyone still remembers in some dumpster dive bar, in hopes some chick will still be impressed with it.

Good for Alter on getting that the media hurts him more than it helps, but as long as his focus is on the delivery of message and not on actions needed, he's missing the mark too.

If its still deranged and unbelievable, that ain't gonna work. Obama needs a message that people don't think is complete bullshit, and that's gonna be a real problem for him.

I also think the big problem is that his big package is just not visible behind the podium, at all! Maybe he needs a better cut in his slacks.

Gay people care about it, plus the liberal women, maybe independent women too.

That stuff is as important as messaging.

Pant creases and large crotches, it wins people over.

121 Honestly I think this communication and we need to work on our message idea began with Reagan. However liberals forget that Reagan was a good communicator because he had good ideas.

Plus wasnt he is such a dreamy communicator one of Obama's big selling points. What he doesn't have that going for himself now?

123 **Plus wasnt he is such a dreamy communicator one of Obama's big selling points. What he doesn't have that going for himself now?**

Obama's lazy and boring and his speeches are conclusory, "as I've always said," or "we've already tried that [no analysis], so we can go back." The thought process is of one who's already sold without any actual thinking, so it doesn't actually sell.

124 “Let’s get real here,” McCain told The Hill. “There was never any

McCain
disputes the notion that he has rejected entreaties to cooperate with

Or:

Or:

Let us never forget the sacrifices made by so many that brought us to where we are today and where, with the help of Gaia, we will be tomorrow.

139 The reality, however, is that much of the second-guessing of Obama is more than just passing static. There are several prevailing themes of criticism that fall into distinct categories, reflecting strategic disagreements and ideological fault lines within Democratic circles that in some cases stretch back for years:

Obama needs to stop saying the economy is getting better
.......fair enough

Obama should stop demonizing Mitt Romney
........can't complain

Obama’s at risk of losing his unique, hopey-changey brand
........it's already gone

The president needs a clearer agenda for his second term
........good luck with this one
