Obama Team, 2011: We're Going To Blitz Them With A Billion Dollar Campaign
Obama Team 2012: Money Is Corrupting Our Politics

Eh, that's not what this article is about but Romney has beaten Obama in fundraising for May.

$76.8 million to $60 million. The RNC has $107 million cash on hand. The article doesn't note the DNC figure.

This also comes after Romney almost tying Obama in April ($40 million to $43 and change million).

It also doesn't include Super-PAC money.

I've been delaying posting this, searching for a quote I saw, but now can't find. Can't find it. The basics of it were thus: An Obamoid said "we always expected this would happen." Or anticipated. You get the drift.

No, you didn't. You really didn't. Not when you were talking up your billion-dollar campaign.

I understand why the campaign would put a brave face on this, and I won't even call it a lie. It's not a lie when you bluff in poker. It's the rules of the game. You're supposed to.

But I will blame someone for this: The Media.

Rock stars know they're flawed human beings. Rock stars know, for example, that their last album kinda sucked but was only partly saved at the last moment by bringing in a hired-gun songwriter and top-notch producer to salvage something from their recording sessions.

You know who doesn't know that? Groupies. Groupies are just full of Mad Love and don't think about things like that. They just worship their Guitar Heroes.

Now what would happen if Rock Stars got all their information from infatuated groupies? Well, if that happened -- if a Rock Star's pre-existing narcissistic impulses were turned to 11 by living in a world reported on exclusively by smitten groupies who really want the band to finally exxxplode! -- that Rock Star might just start forgetting that, that last album? Kind of bad. Might start thinking that last album was great. Might not understand that if he wants to continue the Rock N Roll dream, the next album will have to be better. Much better.

Although we on the right get angry about media cocooning and constant media boosterism and unrelenting media optimism about Democrats' positions (both policy and polling), we shouldn't forget the real victims of this cockeyed view of the world:

The Democrats themselves.

They just never see these things coming.

And they can thank their media groupies for that. Their media groupies are, unwittingly, loving them to death. Loving them to ruin.

Loving them to catastrophe.

ObamaCare has been unpopular since before it was passed.

Has the media ever called it "unpopular"? How about "polarizing"? How about "controversial"? How about "divisive"?

How about "generally rejected by a majority of the public"?

No.

And that last album rrreally rrrokked too, didn't it?

You almost can't blame these guys.

Almost.

But you can, because Rock Stars really ought to know the world is not made up only of their most devoted groupies. Smart Rock Stars know that. Smart Rock Stars know to never believe your own press clippings.

Dumb Rock Stars -- Rock Stars headed for a career skid -- don't.

Speaking of: Compare Groupie Organization The Washington Post's headlines on Obama's 2008 win (about 7 points) to Walker's 2012 win (also 7 points).

Rock on!

Smitten Groupie Attends Rock Star's Concert, But Insists: "I'm Not with the Band!" Leslie Moonves, president of CBS and its news division, stood on line to get his wristband for Obama's sixty-seven bazillionth fundraiser.

He acknowledges...

Before the event began, a long line of partygoers waited on the sidewalk outside the hotel to check in. CBS chief Les Moonves and his wife, Julie Chen, waited patiently for their wristbands. Obama, Moonves said, “has shown great leadership” on the issue of gay marriage.

Though he heads a news division, Moonves said, “ultimately journalism has changed … partisanship is very much a part of journalism now.”

He hastened to add that despite his presence, “I run a news division. I’ve given no money to any candidate.”

Why is this whispered, when it should be prominently disclosed?

1 I had a hunch that, while Obama was raking in more money, fundraising would be used as a fake metric of success and support. But once Mitt started bringing in the dough faster than Barry, then the narrative would IMMEDIATELY pivot to fundraising being a metric of where the support of fat-cat corporatist 1%ers clearly lay.

Romney's so mean! He's got all the moneys! He won't even redistribute any of it to the poor DNC!

2 For the "we always expected this to happen" quote, I think you mean Gabe's morning post from a few days ago where he linked that video from Obama's campaign manager. That's basically what the campaign manager was saying...that they knew once Romney won the nomination Republicans would consolidate and they really knew it was going to be a tough race, yes they knew, you bet....

5 I haven't read the post yet, but I'll say: Yeah, I know. These people have absolutely no shame. The past began a split-second ago to them, and nothing they said before that is supposed to have happened.

More money, more money, more money for Romney and the GOP! Yay! I fully and enthusiastically embrace the influence of Mitt Romney's donors' money in politics.

2) Excluding money shoves things to barter.
3) Attempting to itemize specific forbidden items just shoves thing into far more nebulous contributions of 'Power', 'Influence', 'Access'.

One party is a whole lot better at lying than the other, probably involving the fact that it isn't hypocritical in their minds. So the more restrictive we get, the more lying going on.

35 This is a position I've maintained for some time. Democrats suffer most from Media's lame boosterism. They end up thinking that Pelosi and Reid are top notch political animals instead of stuttering self-aggrandizing boobs.

In a society with anything approaching an objective media, Joe Biden would not be held as some sort of elder statesman. Instead, the Democrats have to twist themselves into pretzels to try to make Sheriff Joe seem like some sort of important and smart person.

They did not care how many teachers jobs were lost or how much funding was cut as long as Walker would not tough the provision for mandatory union dues. EVERYTHING ELSE was negotiable.

130 How is it we did not take on these union parasites sooner?

Because they've had the protection of the courts - our great courts. Closed shops should be illegal unless the employer decides to close them to whatever group the employer wants, but instead they've been forced on us by our great judges. We still don't have rights to our own property. If it isn't unions being allowed to take over hiring at their will then it's the feral government dictating what people have to be hired to have a nice company rainbow photo and how much women have to be paid.

We have a long, long way to go to get back to sanity. This is a first half-step. Once the fiscal pressure is relived, though, just watch the courts (and many pols) switch to "harassment by diversity", which is an even better and more efficient tool for destruction.

133 Great piece from Major Garrett:

We’re all partisans now.

Division, for lack of a better word, is good. That’s the Gordon Gekko
side of politics. Division forces people to listen to an argument and
take sides. Silly and front-loaded appeals to unity and
post-partisanship fog the mind, delay action, and deepen mistrust. Over
time, voters begin to understand they are being deceived. People take
stands for a reason and want the politicians they send to Washington do
the same (71 percent of Republicans and 58 percent of Democrats want
more partisan fealty, not less). This is not inconsistent with
democracy. It is democracy. That’s the cynical secret of presidential
leadership.

It’s time the rest of us got the joke and started demanding honest calls for honest division.

Divide us, please.

On the whole I don't actually believe big money corrupts the process. Freakonomics has discussed this ad nausium on their blog (just go there and run it through the search bar.)
However, I do believe that the spin of big money corrupts the process. To wit, while I don't think it does, many people do and the insinuation that the Republicans are nothing but big money whores, by the democrats (who are also big money whores, but manage to hide it better) is where the process gets all awry.
So people vote for someone like Obummer who claimed not to be involved in big money, and in fact repeatedly rebuked McCain IIRC for having ties to it (especially via the PACs). But in reality he's no different.
So it should cancel out, but the democrats spin it into a fantasy that helps them. They get both the money and the repudiation of the money. Thats' the problem.

I have to take slight issue with this. The reason the Right can respond extemporaneously to just about any leftist argument is because our arguments derive from basic principles. Posted by: Gowdy, gettin' Rowdy at June 07, 2012 04:03 PM (CGjum)

212 JEA - let me put you some knowledge.

Money doesn't corrupt anything. It costs a shitload of money to run a decent campaign nowadays. Especially if you are a challenger, because incumbents get gigantic advantages such as taxpayer-paid travel, automatic press coverage of whatever they do, lots of taxpayer-paid staff that are just glorified PR people, etc.

I've worked for legislators and a federal administration, and I've been a lobbyist, over a 30-year career, and I can tell you I have never once seen or heard of an elected official actually takinga policy position or championing a piece of legislation just because somebody wants it who gave him a lot of campaign money. That's a bullshit meme that both liberals and conservatives use when they lose the policy argument. A politician who only does the bifdding of his large contriobutors will not be in office very long. Even in themost skewed districts and states, you have to have some appeal to a broad range of constituents and demonstrate concern for all of them.

Businesspeople give to Republicans because they know Republicans are more likely to favor government policy that will create a better climate for them to do business and make profits. Labor unions and trial lawyers give to Democrats because they know Democrats will favor policies that expand government, expand union rights, and expand rights to sue. Not the other way around. The huge exception was all those Wall Street hipsters giving to Obama because they thought he was a cool dude. They're damn sorry about that now and are giving to Romney this time around.

Those horrible Koch brothers are actually libertarians and have been funding research and campaigns for years in support of their beliefs. They're not trying to buy politicians, they are trying to persuade them and the voters that free markets work better than anything governments can do.

214 I am so **SICK** of idiots saying money corrupts the process. Listen up: the ONLY thing money does is let you GET YOUR MESSAGE OUT.

I'd love a study that measured how much it would cost to purchase all the column inches and all the tv time the MSM spent with their fawning coverage of SCFOAMF. In order to PULL EVEN with the campaign ads the New York Times and ABCCBSNBCCNN produce every single day we have to raise billions. Just to friggin LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD.

And all the money in the world won't help if the voters don't like your message (Carly Fiona, Meg Whitman, John Connally, off the top of my head)

You know what corrupts??? HUGE PILES OF GOVERNMENT MONEY. You really think, if there wasn't money to siphon off, you'd have a single lobbyist? Piles of government money attracts lobbyists and corruption like huge piles of garbage attracts flies and rats. Cut the spending down, cut down the regulations where you have to hire piles of lawyers and bribe Congressman to get the regs that favor your business (or at least don't hurt it) and I freaking GUARANTEE campaign spending levels will drop.

236 Soothsayer, I am stunned and speechless at your intellectual prowess. Truly, roaches bow at the feet of your mighty brain.

237 Found this in the WaPo from 2011 (link in name):

"Obama’s senior advisers and many of his biggest financial supporters
are optimistic, saying he should have little difficulty matching his
2008 fundraising record. At the same time, backers say, Obama will
continue his efforts to limit the influence of special interests, again
refusing to accept donations from corporate political-action committees
or registered lobbyists. He also will urge outside groups to disclose
their donors, aides said.
Peter Buttenwieser, a Philadelphia
education consultant who helped raise more than $500,000 for Obama in
2008, said, “Once things get rolling and people take a look at the
options, the campaign will raise all the money it needs.”-----

"Some Democratic donors and campaign experts say the millions of middle-income people who donated to Obama three years ago may not have the motivation to give again. The 2012 campaign will lack the combination of factors that animated the 2008 contest: a fresh-faced candidate who could be the first black president; polarizing opponents like Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin; and the eagerness of Democrats to end Republican control of the White House."
