LSU won. So did Florida and South Carolina. Kentucky lost in 21 innings and burned their pitching staff in the process, so they're pretty much fucked because they have to win four straight just to get out of their region. Baylor embarrassed themselves by losing to Oral Roberts - I think they got flustered by their use of the word Oral. Miami lost to Stony Brook. Good times all around.

There's a vid "explaining" the corgi incident you can watch right after that one.
But it still doesn't explain why the fire started. I'm guessing it was maybe a spark from the video gear igniting the spray paint propellant...? Seems a bit unlikely, but it does happen right after the cameraman pokes his camera right down next to the punctured can, anyway. Thank god my corgi never chews on anything that has not been given to her and she's been specifically told she can have it (command word: "Yours"). You can train corgis rather easily, lady--it's one of their most appealing points. Sheesh. Posted by: Nemo from Erewon at June 01, 2012 11:09 PM (gp4ev) 89

You can train corgis rather easily, lady--it's
one of their most appealing points. Sheesh. Posted by: Nemo from Erewon I read that aloud. My man has had to run to the bathroom to avoid peeing himself, he's laughing so hard. Now, he's deliberately, calmly, explaining that training a corgi is not difficult - if you've a will of iron (or a whim of iron, in my case) and a squirt-bottle always to hand. You must understand, I love my corgi. But you can't spell "corgi" without elements of "incorrigible" creeping in. Seriously. The best I can say is that my corgi sees me as his alpha, and will do nothing that pisses me off. My man? Well...um...not so much. The corgi admits the man is bigger and stronger and is allowed to sleep on the bed. But that's it. Posted by: Dianna at June 01, 2012 11:16 PM (mKMj1) 106

Santana walked five. Also, per ESPN, "The no-hitter probably shouldn't have happened because of a missed call on a Carlos Beltran scorcher to lead off the sixth. A replay showed Beltran hit a shot down the line that landed on the white chalk. Third-base umpire Adrian Johnson ruled it a foul ball, and Beltran ended up grounding out."

So, in the event of an alien invasion it really depends on what they want.
If you can get here, you can destroy all life on earth by smashing an asteroid into the earth using the same propulsion system you used to get here. But if they actually want something, and have to land to take it...well then all bets are off. Consider that the Vikings were significantly technically superior to the American Indians when they got to the US... Posted by: 18-1 at June 01, 2012 11:22 PM (3aXbg) 128

Wow. Thanks for that. *** You're welcome. I really enjoyed the photographs, particularly those in her lighter moments, but that of her following 9/11 tugged at my heartstrings. The Telegraph has put together some great stuff for her jubilee, including this from an opinion piece titled We won the lottery with Elizabeth II The lottery of destiny meant that, from the age of 11 years and eight months, she knew that, thanks to flaky Uncle Edward’s abdication, and barring her parents producing a male heir, she would one day be Queen. According to her maternal grandmother, Lady Strathmore, every night little Lilibet prayed fervently for a baby brother. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at June 01, 2012 11:23 PM (piMMO) 132

Occupiers Claim PTSD
http://tinyurl.com/cpzrj9x Factors that place us at greater risk for post-traumatic stress are having a history of abuse, not getting support that we need from our allies, and being separated from others, either during or following the action. Because abuse is pervasive in this culture, learning to heal from and integrate our traumatic experiences in action can empower us to live our lives more fully every day. Awww...those poor socialists! Just cry it out. In comparison to rape, perpetrating mass murder, or other terrible things, street demonstration is relatively less traumatic – however trauma is very much an individual thing and people can be severely affected [sic] by imprisonment, gassing, beatings by police, betrayal, or even unexpected behavior by comrades or the state. We can mourn little things as well as big things and it's healthy and we should. Spending time in the ‘sad space’ intentionally allows us to delve deeper into the things we need to heal and we can gradually recover memories that may have been blacked out in order to cope at an earlier stage in life. Many people, many activists were imprisoned or held captive or felt that way through childhood and schooling. There is much to mourn and it's healthy. Yes, if there's one thing these assholes know well, it's rape and street demonstrations. Both are traumatic, in different ways I suppose. Posted by: Ombudsman at June 01, 2012 11:12 PM (AxHOT) How many times? Because I haven't seen but one or two frozen glass containers break like that, and I assumed they had flaws. Recycling salsa jars gets you pretty thin glass that's probably been subjected to impacts. What is up withhot college girls goingfor middle age balding liberal men with pony tails? Posted by: Lampshade Um. You won't like the answer. But, well, it's got more to do with a set of considerations. 1) he's middle aged but hanging out where hot women are to be found. Hmmm. 2) he's wearing a pony tail, while middle aged and hanging out where hot women are to be found. This means that: a) he is important enough that he doesn't have to worry about what a boss thinks'; b) he is also a beta, because he's middle aged, important, and hanging out where hot women are to be found. This means he will be grateful to give me money and admiration, and won't even notice when I screw that gorgeous, hot kid who's going to drive off a cliff next year! Whooppeee! Sex! Money! Kids! So today was the day we found out who got the promotion at work. The department manager of electronics is leaving to a new store, and since electronics is one of the most sought after departments at Walmart, a whole bunch of people put in for it.
Walmart chooses three candidates out of how many apply and gives them interviews. It was me, a cute blonde girl named Amie and Alex, the expert in electronics. Everyone figured that he was a shoe-in for the position. He knows his stuff. Amie and I were talking about how screwed we both were since we were competing against Alex. Anyway. I came into work today, and got pulled into management's office. They politely told me I didn't get the position. Fuck. I was pissed. Later, Amie told me that she didn't get it either. Alex got it. Figures. Oh, well. Alex comes in at 7pm to start his shift, and I'm feeling better about the whole thing. He knows his stuff--he'd make a good boss. He gets called into the management office, where he respectfully declines the position. WTF? And that was my day today. I have no idea what's gonna happen now. President Barack Obama is holding six separate fundraisers in the Midwest on Friday, June 1 — the same day the Labor Department reported the May unemployment rate ticked up to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent.
On this day in 1984 — when President Ronald Reagan also was running for re-election — Reagan announced that the May unemployment rate had dropped to 7.4 percent. When President Reagan announced the lower May unemployment rate on June 1, 1984, he was on his way, not to a fundraiser, but to Western Europe, to promote peace and democracy in the Cold War era. “Some good news for the economy tonight,” Peter Jennings, the late ABC News anchorman, announced on his June 1, 1984 broadcast, citing the drop in unemployment. Jennings noted that the unemployment rate was at its lowest level since 1981, and he called it “good political news for President Reagan.” “It means real people in every category of the labor force are going back to work.” The report led the June 1, 1984 “World News Tonight” broadcast. When I was younger I couldn't be asked to listen to Rush. Then when I was in Power School in Orlando, we heard that they were doing a Metallica Laser show at the Omni and they were starting that week. So we headed out on friday night, but we had bad information. It was the last week for the Rush laser show. Fucking blew my mind, been a fan ever since.
And yes, the Metallica show the next week was even better. When they started it up, every one yelled at them to turn it up. 100k watts of stereo power and it wasn't loud enough at first. I didn't hear right for a few days. Fucking baus. Posted by: Zakn at June 02, 2012 12:57 AM (2TqDD) 313

I do better with quick picks. and I have one set I always use which is combo of birthdays and lucky numbers for my son and I. Oh well... its my ... uh... bad habit. Open Thread Ramble Rant, Denounced For Racism Version (racism = not kowtow-ing low enough to african american {what proud part? Angola? Congo? Zambia? Zaire? Zimbabwe?} thug)
Oh what a wonderful late spring night in the San Fernando valley, nice for a bicycle ride... and then I think of the teen age thug who "accidentally on purpose" backed his skateboard and himself directly in front of my path on a wide smooth deserted sidewalk this Memorial Day. I was gently pedaling my beach cruiser sporting the American flag and a "buddy poppy" bought from a vet at the Canoga Park Memorial Day parade. Looking him in the eye like a man (my mistake). I said "pardon me!" and deftly turned and past, not dabbing a foot (Trials riding points, please!) Behind me was heard his little boyfriend urging him on - "he's mad dogging you, man!" and the rapid onrush of skateboard wheels as the - don't you have to be 18 to be tattooed in Cali? - colored thug provoked a second hostile confrontation, turning quickly in front of me forcing me to stop. He is holding his skateboard at starboard arms, wound up like a baseball bat. I'm turning 58 tomorrow, and it has been a decade since I had to subdue someone less than half my age, and have a bum achilles tendon now. Worried? Admit it. "Yew Gotta Prawblum? says crisp-bill, baggy-shorts boy. There are two cans of CS-OC spray on me, a cheap chinese stun gun and a spyderco. Been jacked-up around here before? Yep. Bicycle lock might block a blow if it was drawn and swung quick enough. But figuring the fight you win is the fight you avoid, I stammered, "No". "Guude" said young correspondent, and slowly skated away with his nose in the air. Putting some distance around the corner, it took three 911 operators to decide to listen to my mournful plaint. The last local one said "well, what he did was very disrespectful... but..." BUT WHAT? I asked her - if being provoked into two hostile confrontations are not enough for you, please, tell me how low I must kowtow to the next thug, and then I can take 911 off this phone, because it's useless! In a defeated voice, she said " I'll send a car". So now what? Am I going to be cold cocked by a little thug for being an old white man who dared to call a cop? Please, God, send the meteors and earthquakes and fire to California, my home state which has left me, just take me and my parrot quick to meet Alex the Grey and all the animals I have loved, in heaven. Lotto numbers are chosen by mechanical devices that are subject to the laws of physics just like everything else. The assumption of a random distribution is just an approximation. The problem is that the assumptions may only be violated in non-predictable ways. Posted by: chemjeff at June 02, 2012 01:27 AM (v2FRB) 359

When did God decide that ping-pong balls must be used to draw lottery numbers? Surely we have devices that are more highly balanced and precise than ping-pong balls. Like, say, jet turbine bearings.
I say we start a movement to change from ping-pong balls to precision metallic ball bearings, preferably from missile guidance systems to assure state-of-the art. Posted by: bergerbilder at June 02, 2012 01:42 AM (j+Izh) 387

HUGE, and they are seriously boppin' along to the music (even with all the peculiar time signatures and everything). Posted by: cthulhu at June 02, 2012 01:55 AM (kaalw) I think it was part of the Rock In Rio event, wasn't it? South American audiences appear to be borderline insane. I'd love to go see a big metal show in South America and join in the insanity. Posted by: Robert at June 02, 2012 01:57 AM (F79HU) Posted by: Robert at June 02, 2012 01:58 AM (F79HU) 407

Yeah, it's a pretty cool DVD, and it's even more amazing to think that (if I recall correctly), it was their first tour in South America, yet the audience knew all the songs and was really into it. Posted by: Waterhouse at June 02, 2012 02:04 AM (vTzgC) 413

Somewhere close by, there's a small AM transmitter on 1620 that plays 2112 in a loop. Sometimes it's first minute or so, sometimes its longer. Have to drive about half a mile south or so to pick it up, but it's always there. Posted by: Blanco Basura at June 02, 2012 02:13 AM (xKC/c) 421
278 The dating advice article was stupid.
"Men respect sluts" No we don't. We'll sleep with sluts, but we don't want to take you home to mom. Posted by: Alex at June 02, 2012 12:43 AM (tGh6R) All dating advice is stupid because everyone wants something different. I respect sluts but not "sluts" like the author. I think it's funny that she rips on the feminist line that women hate sex, but swallows whole the feminist line that men care about nothing but sex. Earth to advice chick: any man who is over 18, lives in a major metropolitan area, and is not flat broke, can pick up the yellow pages and order sex like a pizza. If he's dating you he's looking for something more. That includes the PUAs. After reading this I think I get her: "This is another reason to make your date and then not communicate until you meet. People always screw this up. They keep emailing and texting and eventually you learn more than you want and you’re turned off." She wants casual sex and probably wishes she could order it from the yellow pages like men can. I feel for her. I'd tell her that it's not the religious right or the feminazis that are keeping this from her, but a simple biological reality: men can't fake it. Maybe it's like some sort of doomsday trigger set up so that if the Soviets dropped nukes in the area the destruction of the transmitter would kickstart a countdown that would begin the launch of our ICBMs towards Moscow.
I mean it's probably some asshole with a lot of time and money but I'd like to imagine the scenario above. Posted by: Robert at June 02, 2012 02:19 AM (F79HU) Posted by: bergerbilder at June 02, 2012 02:21 AM (j+Izh) 426

One of the funny things about Rush is how Alex is so seriously outgunned. They had this "Bassist of the Year" and "Drummer of the Year" thing in some musician mags, and Geddy and Neil got "emeritus'd" after three or five years running.....but Alex hasn't, to my knowledge, gotten "Guitarist of the Year" once.
And it's not because he isn't really good -- he's got enough talent to be the centerpiece of a really fine band. It's just that his cohorts are at the apex of the top tier. People actually go, "yay! It's the drum solo!" at Rush concerts....and Geddy's little riff in Strangiato (Malignant Narcissism has another great one) is just tasty. Being that the rock band ethos has everyone kowtowing to a diva-esque lead guitarist, however, it's funny to see a band where he's in third place. Waaaaay late and about 200 posts behind, but.....
I live in Philly. (Please don't hold that against me.) Mayor Nutter's new "don't feed the homeless" thing is just a sop to the wealthy folks who are living downtown. We've had a boomlet of neo-yuppies moving to condos and apartments in Center City, and I think they are tired of running the bum gauntlet every morning and night. We also have a tradition of Quakers and other do-gooders setting up makeshift soup kitchens in the middle of public parks and sidewalks. Bad optics which is probably scaring off some potential residents. Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at June 02, 2012 05:08 AM (fiXQh) 442
Mmmmm, I love a man from Philly. Please hold what you got against me and tell me more, but not too much more, or I might get turned off.

Wakey, wakey, 'rons and 'ettes. Here's some awesome news to start the day. Even more so if you live in LA. Louisiana's bold bid to privatize schools. I'm highly impressed with Gov. Jindal for initiating this.
http://scoamf.us/uB FTA: Starting this fall, thousands of poor and middle-class kids will get vouchers covering the full cost of tuition at more than 120 private schools across Louisiana, including small, Bible-based church schools.... The following year, students of any income will be eligible for mini-vouchers that they can use to pay a range of private-sector vendors for classes and apprenticeships not offered in traditional public schools. The money can go to industry trade groups, businesses, online schools and tutors, among others. Every time a student receives a voucher of either type, his local public school will lose a chunk of state funding. Posted by: Lady in Black at June 02, 2012 08:19 AM (vOMX+) 453

At 452. If only we could do that at the national level. The public school teachers that truly are talented would be able to switch over to private schools.
Would need to do something about curriculum though. And not leave out a thorough covering of our founding. The how and the why. Maybe include a course on what progressivism really is. Posted by: teej at June 02, 2012 08:52 AM (sbimF) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.0937 seconds. |
