Washington Post Stealth-Edits Deception in Romney Hit Piece;
Now Says They'll Add Explanation for Their Deception

This should be a hoot.

The Washington Post originally claimed:

“I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and has long been bothered by the Lauber incident.

Emphasis added. But that's not true. Stu White has not "long been bothered" by the incident -- he was not present for it at the time, and in fact did not even hear of it until this year -- several weeks ago --when the Washington Post asked him about it.

So this is an intentional misrepresentation.

When called out on this, the Washington Post stealth-edited, without acknowledging the correction, so the piece now reads:

“I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and said he has been “disturbed” by the Lauber incident since hearing about it several weeks ago, before being contacted by The Washington Post.

So now the Washington Post says he's been disturbed about it for a matter of weeks. They are claiming that he did hear about the story, before the Washington Post contacted him; but this is contradicted by the man himself.

White, in an interview with ABC News, said that he is “still debating” whether he will help the campaign, remarking, “It’s been a long time since we’ve been pals.” While the Post reports White as having “long been bothered” by the haircutting incident,” he told ABC News he was not present for the prank, in which Romney is said to have forcefully cut a student’s long hair and was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post.

Now let's take a minute to examine this.

Yesterday on The Five, Greg Gutfeld said he started not to like Romney a little while reading this article. (He then realized he wouldn't like himself if he read a news article on his high school behavior.)

So should Greg Gutfeld have been quoted as an eyewitness in this report, too?

See, Greg Gutfeld has the exact same knowledge of the incident as Stu White -- they both heard of the incident from the Washington Post.

So why shouldn't Greg Gutfeld be reported as an eyewitness, too? That's what they did with Stu White.

The Washington Post was so determined to frame up Romney they misrepresent people who only heard of the story from they themselves as witnesses.

This deliberate attempt to juice up additional "disturbed" witnesses exposes that they were, in fact, Out To Get Romney here.

I suppose this was also obvious from how they subtly suggested that Romney engineered a Suicide by Natural Causes, and how a very silly and harmless prank -- rousting fellow students while dressed as a cop -- is cast as a "terrifying" incident.

But this cinches it. The story is overwritten and hyped up beyond all reason -- silly pranks cast as "terrifying," the word "terror" and "terrified" appearing multiple times -- and then, needing some justification for their overwrought hype, they start inventing other witnesses who, in their telling, have "long been bothered" by the horrors they witness, their every night's sleep haunted by Romney's psychotic... um, pranks.

Now that they've been exposed, they say they'll add an update "explaining" things.

Explain it? You deliberately misrepresented a man has having known of the incident and having been "long bothered" by it despite the fact that he heard about it, from you, three or four weeks ago.

You're going to "explain" that, Washington Post?

How? With another lie? "Mistakes were made"? An "inadvertent editing error," perhaps, like we saw three times (each time even more inadvertently!) at NBC in the Zimmerman matter?

56 My honest reaction on first reading this story and seeing it took place in 1965, and was about hair-cutting, was that this was a story about hair. Many of you are not as old as I am, but I clearly and vividly remember the huge controversy that was "Long Hair" in the early to mid sixties. Boys got thrown out of the house for growing their hair long. Doesn't anyone besides me have a whole different cultural memory take on this? I don't even remember "gays" being on the radar back then. It was all about those crazy hippies and their long hair. And this incident was at a prep school, which would have made the hair issue even more controversial.

Everyone sees this thru the present context of teh ghey, and may be totally misrepresenting the cultural context of the time.

108 Probably true, but the O camp fallacy is that Romney has the weak position.

Ah, but if you believe the press, we're a "50/50 nation" and the squishy middle doesn't like ideologues. So, first they set it up as an issue- orchestrating, or just seizing on, Mr. Grenell's departure from the Romney Camp (volley). Then, they make it a Presidential Issue with Joe Biden's "Oops" moment (bump). Then, the President makes his non-stand. Which, if you're playing to "moderates" should sound good. Lot's of caveats "for me personally, etc." and indication that, despite his beliefs, he won't actually do anything (set). Then, they release the "Mitt Romney is a homophobe!" hounds (spike).

On paper, if you start with their flawed premises, it looks like it could work.

109 If everyone who was ever an asshole at any point during their life is ineligible for public office, there won't be anyone left. I'm with Gutfeld, the reported behavior did make me a little queasy. Then I remembered that when I was in the eighth grade during gym class I helped put a moderately effeminate young fella upside down in a trash barrel. Turns out unbeknownst to us, other young fellas had been pissing in that trashcan for a week.

The next day, I felt like shit about it. Today, 25 years later, I feel like it was an asshole move. If I ran into that guy today, I'd buy him a drink and apologize for it. Does that make me irredeemable?

Bottom line, young boys do horrible things to each other. Some of them learn from it. I learned that not leaving other people the fuck alone makes me feel like an asshole. In order to not feel like an asshole, I make it a habit of leaving other people alone, even if they are weird, not for their sake, for mine.

Other young boys learn that they have a mean streak to them and they like fucking with people. They end up carrying this with them throughout their lives. It is usually pretty easy to spot the pattern.

Which brings us back to Mitt Romney. Is there any evidence that this became a pattern or was this a one off incident that he grew from? I haven't seen any indication of a pattern.

1967 - Mitt Romney challenges gay man in interview:

[A]fter we finished and the camera was turned off, (he) sat down with me and talked for about half an hour. He said, "You know, you answered all of my questions capably, but I have a feeling that you don't really believe that homosexuality is as acceptable as you make it sound." I asked him why he would say that. "Because," he said, "in your heart I think you know it's wrong." It was infuriating. http://tinyurl.com/73vqnvp

With a financial resumé like that, and status as the cash cow keeping the Post afloat, why wouldn’t CEO Don Graham be singing the praises of Kaplan University? Perhaps because there is a longstanding history of allegations of fraudulent practices, with hundreds of millions of dollars of profits diverted to Kaplan executives. Perhaps it’s also Kaplan’s generation of such profit on the backs of poor students and returning war veterans, preying on their vulnerabilities only to later reward them with degrees of questionable value, massive student-loan debt, and little employment opportunity. Perhaps it is Kaplan’s curious hiring of lobbyists to influence legislation at the state and federal levels, including a former Obama staffer, Anita Dunn, just as the heat was being turned up on for-profit colleges to rein in out-of-control practices.

As they say, read the whole thing.

70 The left is trying to tie Romney to every negative buzz word that's been in the media spotlight for the past year. The story doesn't matter, it's just an effort to establish: Romney=bully. Romney=1%. Romney=Wall St. Romney=Tiger Mom. Ok, maybe that last one was a bit far fetched.

You forgot:

Romney=Hairdresser (to P.O, the Social Cons)

181 "Most of the discussions [among TV people] today about why Robin got the interview have to do with her being gay," a source told Gawker. "Not that she's black, or friends of the Obamas."

"Obviously they picked her because she's black and gay," said another industry insider familiar with the selection.

Plus, her mother was in town to visit her in New York, sources say. Watershed interview with POTUS or not, Roberts didn't want to stand up mom.

A long time ESPN reporter prior to joining GMA, Roberts has always managed to safely navigate her open secret without any Anderson Cooper-level of commotion. But after sitting across from Obama as he vocalized his "evolved" stance on gay marriage for the first time, it will be more difficult for the ABC anchor to sidestep.

"It's hardly a secret in the business," the insider said. "I've seen her girlfriend. She's around the building all the time—very attractive and well-dressed."

UPDATE:Internet behemoth Matt Drudge, who has just directed his readers to this post, is also commonly understood to be gay.

Is that true? Is Drudge gay, not that it matters, just curious

I understand just fine. The only THING capable of self-respect are individuals. An inanimate object, or an aggregate are not selves, nor are they sentient to the point of being able to conjure up a sense of respect, about themselves or anything/anyone else.

Go back to the Civil War era. On one side you had Confederates, on the other you had Unionists. Either side you were on, you found Presidents and ex-Presidents who would have done things that could be deemed America-hating by the other.

Did you know Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe all secretely negotiated with the french against the policy of the United States, during Washington's and Adams' terms in the White House?

Barack Obama is unique in many ways, but jump down off the hyperbole ledge. Some of us are old enough to remember Bill Clinton getting bj's in the White House and Jimmy Carter scolding us for our malaise.

216 Jebus, the Post doubles down today with a "local news" story where they interviewed a bunch of school principals, and of course every one of them said any student in their school who did what Romney did would probably be expelled, wouldn't get into any college, and basically get a ticket straight to Hell. And of course, this gave the reporter the opening to repeat all the sordid made-up details of the original story, complete with the victim "who many assumed was gay."

None of them were asked their opinion on how such an incident would likely have been handled in 1965, in an upper-class private school, however.

Posted by: rockmom at May 11, 2012 04:18 PM (aBlZ1)

217 None of this 'feels' true - In 1965, men never had long hair. Think Beach Boys? Any Mod with "long hair" still wouldn't havehad long enough hairtoallow someone to cut it further, asRomney is accused of doing. My DH, (very, very Cool!)had hair maybe 3-4 inches long at the time, not long enough that anyone could cut itin a prankas described.
Not to mention - "gay" wasn't on our radar in the '60's. Sorry - doesn't pass the smell test. These guys are nuts SCOAMF.

219 #56 You are exactly right. It was about hair, not gayness.

I know younger morons will find this hard to believe, but as the daughter of educated parents who were not particularly prudish, in 1965 I did not know that such a thing as gays existed! I knew there were guys who were sissies, but I had NO idea of the mechanics at all! I had this explained to me as a married woman in the mid-70's.

On the other hand, my high school was set all a-tizzy when a kid moved in from California, and had long (early Beach Boys style) hair, and wore an iron cross on a chain and sandals with no socks to school! I thought Albert Theil, our very Germanic principal, was going to have a heart attack!

mama winger is right. In those days, the controversy was about hair. People didn't even KNOW about the gheyness, or if they did, they sure didn't discuss it.

220 #212 Apparently the guy came out to his family much later in life. As did about 99% of gay men in that era. But he may well have not come out to anyone else, so his family is rightfully upset to seehis secretsplashed across the pages of a national newspaper well after his death.

I have a very close friend who is 63 years old, and gay. But he has never, in the almost 40years I have known him, actually told me he is. He never told his parents. He would have been in high school about the same time as Romney. In fact, he even married a woman in 1976, and stayed married for 3 years before he got a divorce. He is a well known lobbyist in Washington and almost nobody knows he is gay. Men of that era are very private about it, even now.

222 In a story yesterday about Willard* Romney's premeditated murder of a gay man, this paper presented the testimony of five terrified witnesses into whose memory of the killing had been seared. On of the witnesses, Stu White, has since reaffirmed that he attended Romney's school
at the time of the incident. The story has been edited to reflect that he was disturbed when the slaughter was recounted to him earlier this year.

*Mr. Romney's Christian name (if Mormonism is considered to Christian) is Willard. It is not know why he adopted the name "Mitt" in the years following the homicide.
