Happy Friday.

The family of Romney's "bullying victim" has released a statement saying they're "aggrieved" that he would be used to further a political agenda. They also say that the Washington Post's portrayal of him is "inaccurate."

"Lobster hostilities" lead to boat sinkings in Friendship, Maine. (Couldn't resist the headline.)

"Sleep loss from 'social jet lag' is tied to obesity." (Again, couldn't resist the headline, which feels like it was auto-generated from a list of things that are big in pseudo-science right now.)

And, finally, a clash between church and brunch in Brooklyn. What bad economy?

So far, gornicht from gornicht. And the MFM spin has been openly mocked. If things remain equal, SCOAMF could go down big.

I don't like romney but that is the very last thing he should do. Instead he should hunker down and analyze the economy as it is, based on the emergency conference call and other signs that are emerging. He needs to make sure he knows what's coming down the road and then he can begin to speak to the real issues of the economy.

Fine. I don't have a problem with that. I'm not going to bother reading the wording of this apology. I think he's handling this nonsense just fine.

So the next incident, when they find he put a "kick me" sign on some kid in the 4th grade, or pulled little Suzie's pigtails, again after the fauxstorm of outrage from the left subsides enough for him to be heard, Romney can say "I'm sorry" to Suzie or Poindexter, and get back to doing what he does.

Every time something like this happens, another blue state turns purple, and another purple state turns red.

63 I would like to point out that it is the press who are the bullies in this country.

They will trash any private citizen, rich or poor, living or dead, to advance Obama's agenda. Not one of us is safe from this. I am certain Mr. Lauber's surviving family members never imagined that their brother's reputation would be posthumously destroyed by the Washington Post. The Post didn't even have the courtesy to notify them ahead of time, let alone interview them.

And as we have discussed over countless threads, George Zimmerman's life is ruined. The mob will now follow him wherever he goes, helped by a press who has the narrative they want and will not let it go.

Who will be next? Some small businessman who borrowed money from Bain? A Mormon who went to Mitt for religious counseling? A contractor on his home in California?

This is a press which is as thuggish as their idol, and is far from the "watchdog" they purport to be. They are disgusting people and I look forward to the time that they are unemployed losers who have to eat out of trashcans.

Miss M, I think you are being too easy on the members of the press.

I think that one good thing coming out of this campaign is that Romney is not lying back and thinking of the Presidency, he, his team, and numerous bloggers are responding to the crap the media is trying to sell within days if not hours. The significance of even a weaselly retraction from the WaPo is considerable and starts to demonstrate to many of the low information voters that there may be a Vast Left Wing Conspiracy after all.

The fact that the press is willing to (and has) savage ordinary citizens in support of the god-king doesn't win many hearts and minds either.

It's just so freakin' delicious a quote. Romney just needs to add, "While Mr. Obama is forgetting about his recession, I'm sure not. And I bet you can't forget about it either. Maybe his golf game and campaigning are eating into his 'policy time,' I dunno. Let's just say that I'll retain my focus on the important issues that affect America." And so on. Add snark to flavor.

88 "of competing uses of the sidewalk"

Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Municipal public property is not owned by the private industry or a cafe to usurp without a permit. And those permits could be a good source of public revenue for the town funding upgrades to the sidewalks.

If there's a regulation on the books, then either remove it or accept it.

When sidewalks are blocked by vendors, panhandlers, or tables and chairs and customers very possessive of their static position, or when pedestrians are run down by wheels, there is a problem in public safety. Also, how are fire regulations enforced if the crowd inside the cafe can't get outside because the door and sidewalk are blocked with tables, chairs and congestion of people?

Pedestrians could also support keeping their town's sidewalk passage right of way intact by protecting handicap enforcement. All things public must provide public access.

What they don't understand (and neither do lots of people) is that there is no discrimination against gay people. They can get married according to the rules that society has created.

Regardless of how old you think it acceptable to nurse, the picture is exhibitionist as far as the mother goes, and opens the kid up to emotional abuse from peers as he grows older.

that anyone who sells pets over the Internet, by phone or mail order can

Freeport Area Library Board President Donna Michael said the books had been out since Oct. 19, or 240 days and $81.60 in fines.
Michael said she had no choice but to get police involved after two phone calls, a postcard and three letters failed to get the books returned.
"After not getting any response from the certified letter, I turned the file over to the Freeport Police Department," said Michael.
The girl's mother returned the books late Thursday afternoon.
Police could have filed charges against the girl's parents had the books not been returned.

^^ This.

The problem with the cover really is the position. That's not a natural breast feeding position in any way shape or form. The lady's got her chest pushed out and a pissed off "Yeah my tit's hanging out and don't you dare judge me!" look on her face. The poor kid looks a bit bewildered.

I nursed my daughter and it was wonderful. She self-weaned at about 15 months but I've known a few folks who kept it up longer. The ONLY folks I know who were gung-ho about having their titties hanging out for everyone to see (outside of their own homes, a home it's totally different) while they were breast feeding we're the nursing nazis who were doing it more to make a point and to dare someone to say something so they could flip out on them.

My grandma was the worst. Every time I saw her she badgered me about getting my daughter onto "real food" and a bottle. I just ignored it mostly. People are a lot more relaxed about it now than they used to be, so long as you're considerate of the people around you.

217 "We have reviewed applications from proponents of renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar power facilities, for programmatic permits to authorize eagle take that may result from both the construction and ongoing operations of renewable energy projects. During our review, it became evident that the 5-year term limit imposed by the 2009 regulations (see 50 CFR 22.26(h)) needed to be extended to better correspond to the timeframe of renewable energy projects."

Current law allows permitting for “programmatic” killing of bald eagles, which “is recurring, is not caused solely by indirect effects, and that occurs over the long term or in a location or locations that cannot be specifically identified.”

The USFWS notes that permits “may authorize lethal take that is incidental to an otherwise lawful activity, such as mortalities caused by collisions with rotating wind turbines.”

228 It doesn't matter how much of that high school Romney hit piece is made up or exaggerated or distorted or the worst kind of cynical partisan pseudo-journalism. What matters is the extent to which the meme is picked up and used by SNL, the talk show comedians, etc.

That's how it will reach the low-info voters it's meant for. Something like this doesn't much affect people informed about politics, e.g. anyone who read the actual Washington Post article: they're not basing their votes for or against Romney or Obama on this trifle.

But the people who hear of this not from the news, but from the "Romney as bully" sketches and jokes-- they're the susceptible audience.

I have a step-aunt who nursed her youngest until he was almost six. It was definitely her, though. She was very big into the attachment thing and was personally devastated any time her kids expressed a desire to not have mom hanging all oer them. It's not been good for them, either. The oldest just graduated from college and was offered a job a few hundred miles away from home starting at almost $70K. We ended up on a soy formula because it's the only thing he could keep down. It was so expensive. The formula itself was $20 a can, and that lasted about half a week, and I was constantly replacing bottles because after a few washes they would leak.

They wanted to go to WV, but too many hicks and coal seeds; they wanted to go to Illinois; but Barry could be under indictment there; they wanted to go to California; but the last person has left and turned the lights off; they wanted to go to Massachusetts; but they would have had to declare themselves Indians; so this year they’ll be holding their convention in Athens, Greece!

245 However, my granddaughter will be three in August. She won't even let
anyone help her put her shoes on. Everything is "I can do it myself!" I
can't imagine a three year old who still welcomes that much dependency.
I'm inclined to believe that it's the mom that needs it, not the child.

She must be channeling my 20 year old. But my sister has a 10 year old that could could not even feed himself yogurt at that age because she insisted on spoon feeding him. My eyes have finally recovered from all the rolling.

“The economy’s a mess, it’s dead flat. America has lost its Triple-A rating . . . You know better than Obama does,” Bill said.
Bill
Clinton insisted he had “no relationship” with Obama and had been
consulted more frequently by his presidential successor, George W. Bush.
Obama, Bill Clinton said, “doesn’t know how to be president” and is “incompetent.”
But Hillary resisted the entreaties, according to two of the guests interviewed for the book.
“Why
risk everything now?” a skeptical Hillary told her husband, emphasizing
that she wanted to leave a legacy as secretary of state.
“Because,” Bill replied, his voice rising, “the country needs you!”
“The country needs us!” added Bill.

They are incredibly backward socially and it's getting sad. They ask her permission for everything--May I go in and get a drink? May I go into the next yard to get my ball? etc. I wonder what happened to her to make her, the mother, so afraid? She's very nice and thoughtful but she's protecting them from life. 274 234 My dad was a dairy science animal nutrition professor. My mom nursed all seven of us siblings without exposing herself in public. I nursed my two babies with modesty. A simple flannel baby wrap covers well.

I taught for years, bringing students together monthly for performance, parents welcome but not younger siblings (talking/cry babies not fair to student performers).

One student's mother arrived with his 4-year-old brother, promising to be quiet. As students performed, out of the blue she popped out her big breast and stuck it the boy's mouth. The two dads in the audience goggled at her massive mammary gland exposed in full view of EVERYONE. How big was it? (drum roll) As big as her 4-year-old's head. The lengths some will go to maintaining augmented breasts and "innocent" sexual attention. Her boob distracted everyone from the point of student performances. She just had to make everything all about herself. Over protective mothering makes for big titty babies and weirdly demanding expectations and relations. I was disappointed when her eldest chose to urinate without ever asking to use a toilet. Needless to say, the end.

It's not just student immaturity. Obsessive and neglectful parents impose problems for the teaching/learning developmental process.

312 I'd asked yesterday if we could find out how enthusiastic and excited Democrat candidates in conservative districts/states felt about the JEF's latest "historic" blather. Well, Indiana is in.
And:
"U.S. Senate candidate Joe Donnelly reiterated his position Thursday that
marriage should be between a man and a woman, saying he didn’t feel
pressure to change his views a day after fellow Democrat President
Barack Obama said he supported same-sex marriage."

You think that's good enough Joe? No Joe, it is not. We're going to keep asking that same question. Until we get the truth: You will support whatever the Party tells you to support.

Let me make it clear (in case there was any doubt): Indiana is not "lean R" or "likely R" anymore. It is "solid R." If your candidate has to take the Republican position a day after the JEF's "historic" announcement (when the press has been wall-to-wall positive), you're in trouble.

Re: the Drudge headline.

Dick Morris had a post on the 8th, at The Hill that Romney would win in a landslide if the vote were held today. He number-crunches.

Krauthammer has said similar things.

I believe this is true, and I just can't see Obama digging himself out of this. The mistakes his people (and himself) are making, I think due to the desperation and fear of loss, is dominoe-ing.

His isolation from the Democratic Party and members of Congress - as well as those in the WH itself, has got to be hurting as well.

No matter how much the media gives him cover - the truth is seeping through.

America is pushing back: they sense that "If I Wanted America to Fail" video concept. They are being directly affected and waking up.

The desperation that even WaPo is showing - stories of when Romney was a kid is starting to sound like nails on a chalkboard. They are really counting on Americans being that stupid, again.

Even if Biden gets swapped with Hillary, and horsehead takes her place as SoS - I do not think it will work. I don't see how any of it works for them, now.

I simply don't see it.

330 Not gonna lie, my first thought when I saw the picture was "Those things can provide enough milk for a 3 year old?"
Posted by: tsrblke at May 11, 2012 09:47 AM (22rSN)

Honestly, no they don't. The thing about breast feeding is that they produce a lot or a little depending on how much they're being, ahem, stimulated. Once kids start getting older and less interested in the nursing they slack way off and so does the milk production. In my experience, once my daughter started getting mobile enough hat she could play more independently she started losing interest in nursing. And once they get to be over a year most of their calories are supposed to come from regular food, so you're definitely not going to be producing a lot.

By the time your kid is 3, like this lady's apparently is, it's really more like a human pacifier than a drink. It's definitely *not* an actual feeding.

Even over at Politico, there was an article where a Dem big-wig was quoted as saying: "Obama just evolved himself into a one-term president."

All Mitt has to do is hammer away at SCOAMF's record incessantly and unless there really is a major skeleton in his closet (doubtful considering Mitt has been in politics forever) Mitt is in. Landslide? Not so sure. But a clear mandate of a victory, more than 52-48 seems to be very likely.

It's true. By the time my daughter had started self-weaning, she was about 15-months old and was only really nursing for nap and bed time. Barely even got anything because she'd pretty much stopped the proper suckling motion that gets the milk out and was mainly using me as a comfort. Human pacifier is a pretty accurate description of what she was doing. It was fairly easy to stop it altogether after that.

That's my thought, too, but you'd be surprised at how many kids are still on the binkie at that age. For the folks I know, it was just easier to let them have the pacifier than to let them cry it out. My oldest had one of those soothie pacifiers that was attached to a little stuffed frog. The idea was that the animal weighed it down and made it harder to lose. The boy loved that thing and wouldn't take another one. When he was about 18-months old he chewed off the end of the pacifier part so I cut it off and gave him the frog part. He promptly tossed the frog aside and never asked for it again. Some parents have a harder time breaking that habit, though because some kids are more attached to it than others. I'm lucky mine wasn't.

Nothing. They shouldn't be on the front of a magazine or in that position or advertising themselves.

The most unbelievably thing about nursing is the intimacy. This display is not intimate. People who haven't nursed don't really understand what it is like but this is really the antithesis of what it is. Picture the most intimate TENDER moment (not you EoJ) that you have had in your life, then bastardize it, make it tawdry and then put it on the front of a magazine. This whole thing reminds me of the crotch grabbing at the National Anthem but worse.

Malia's 13, so she's been learning about gay issues in school for at least eight years now.

429 JPMorgan Chase has suffered big, unexpected losses at a closely watched trading desk, providing fodder to supporters of a new financial regulation the bank's CEO has loudly opposed.

The biggest U.S. bank by assets said on Thursday that it had lost $2 billion on bad bets on credit derivatives, made by a London trading desk, run by a man other traders have alternately dubbed "The London Whale" and "Voldemort." The office is intended to hedge the giant bank's credit risk, not increase it.

In a regulatory filing on Thursday, the bank said that, since the end of March, its chief investment office "has had significant mark-to-market losses in its synthetic credit portfolio, and this portfolio has proven to be riskier, more volatile and less effective as an economic hedge than the firm previously believed."

In a quickly scheduled conference call Thursday evening, CEO Jamie Dimon, who has been persistently critical of government efforts to regulate banks, said JPMorgan's trading losses were due to "egregious and self-inflicted mistakes," from trades that were "poorly executed and poorly monitored."

All of this puts some recent news from Forbes into perspective:

The Washington Post Co. reported its first-quarter earnings on Friday, and the news coming out of the newspaper division was mostly grim. The unit lost $22.6 million in the quarter, with revenue down 8% and revenue from print advertising specifically falling 17%.

Meanwhile, the Post just reported one of the biggest circulation drops of any major newspaper with the lucrative Sunday edition selling 5.2% fewer copies and the daily edition skidding almost 10%. Oh, and newsroom leaders are so distressed about the way the business decline is affecting them, they held a secret meeting with the paper’s president, Steve Hills — without inviting executive editor Marcus Brauchli.

Honestly, I feel sorry for them. Their parents probably love them, but I don't think they're a terribly close family. It's very sad that , in the only candid photos I ever see of them, no one is EVER smiling.

Never underestimate the power of the Baghdad Bob Media and Federally funded research grants to come up with complete bullshit.

Yeah, well, tell that to the President who spent much (most?) of his time in a wheelchair.

People are already willing to make those accommadations, the government never needed to force them to do so. And now, the ADA has gone even further and things that aren't disabling are considered "disabilities."

@AllenG,
It gets wierder too, when you start saying what an accomdation is. Consider the wheelchair pool lift thing. This is a noble goal, and many people already meet the goal with temporary lifts that get stored over in the corner until needed (Reasonable Accomadation).
But then the Gov'ment says "nope, it's gotta a permenant lift!" which is a bit strange. So we've got a case here with the Ends (access to things like buildings or pools) is agreeable but the Government is being all wonky on the means.
Reminds me of that Chipotle ADA case a while ago, where the person couldn't "get the Chipotle experience" because the counters were too high. Chipotle already has a policy where they will make your burrito at a table for you so you can have that experience. I believe a California court rule that "wasn't enough" and they needed to lower the counters or something (which isn't a reasonable accomadation, since the employees would suffer then, unless you sunk all the floors, which isn't good from a cleaning standpoint.)

556 Whoa. From an excerpt by Barky's former doctor reviewed at Human Events:

In an exclusive preview of The Amateur
by Human Events, Obama’s longtime physician reveals the lack of
humanity in Obama’s character and carelessness with which he enacted the
entirely politicized health insurance reform, The Patient Protection
and Affordable Care Act, often called ObamaCare.

Scheiner said
that he believes the president miscalculated politically and that the
health reform is ultimately doomed to fail. Worse, Scheiner doubts the
character of a man who holds the highest and most influential office in
America: “I think there is too much of the University of Chicago in
him. By which I mean he’s academic, lacks passion and feeling, and
doesn’t have the sense of humanity that I expected.”

The author, Klein, later in the book, compares Obama’s personality to early the 20th
Century progressive president, Woodrow Wilson. By quoting the historian
Forrest McDonald, who called Wilson’s perception of himself, “little
short of Messianic,” Klein says that McDonald’s description of Wilson
“fits Obama to a T.”

Re: Handicapped. I have a Handicapped MIL, we'll either use the Walker (which she's not great at, but it makes her feel independent) or the wheelchair (which is obviously better for longer distances.)
In any case, either way, when we're out we need that Handicapped spot, or she might not make it into the store (and with the Wheelchair, we need at least open space next to the car to set up.)
Wife and I pull into said spot, get some angry looks from the lady in the adjoining spot when we get out (we always get out before MIL to make sure she doesn't fall getting out.) Just ice cold stares. Then we get MIL and the look softens a bit (not much). Angry lady gets out of her car, she's old but doesn't seem to have any trouble walking at all (certainly not compared to my barely stable MIL that takes 2 of us flanking her to make sure she makes it inside.)
Yeah, I did the "Go away" handflick motion to her when I got out. I'm an ass.

We're so cautious about it we don't even use the Handicap tag when picking her up from somewhere (it's a temporary tag). We've gotten some..hostility...before when we've done that. Usually the people who complain at us don't look handicapped at all.
FWIW, technically if we're going somewhere to get the MIL we're within our rights to use the tag (understanably) even if she didn't come with us (say she's meeting us there with other people.) I even told one person "you can wait here until we come out as proof that we're picking up someone who actually qualifies for this spot.

I think you were totally justified!

I don't have a problem with genuinely handicapped, infirm individuals using "handicapped" spaces. That's what they're there for. And while I agree with AllenG that the government shouldn't mandate them, I also recognize that if they didn't do so, everyone would park there regardless of disability status. So it's one gubmint thing I agree with.

I DON'T agree with the wide-ranging, insane number of "disabilitiies" that will get you a handicapped sticker, tag, or license plate. They should strictly be for people with severe mobility issues, such as the wheelchair bound. I'm sorry, but obesity is not a handicap. I don't care how long it takes you to walk across the parking lot. I don't care if you have to stop every five steps to catch your breath. If you're obese, you do not deserve a handicap space. If you're obese, you should be TRYING to park as far away as reasonably possible so you can get some exercise! I realize that some cases of obesity are due to medical issues such as thyroid problems or diabetes medication; but those SHOULD be controllable.

And as for mental or emotional disorders? Um, no. If you've got a mental disorder that doesn't prevent you from driving, then you can frigging walk, okay? And the same goes for emtotional disorders. I'd rather a pregnant woman or an elderly person be able to use the handicapped spaces WITHOUT a handicap tag than a perfectly healthy person with borderline personality disorder who HAS a handicap tag.

There's a stability scale whereby something in the mid 20s is "heavily drunk" (it measures your ability to not fall.) MIL scores between a 4-9 depending on how she's doing. I think that's with the walker. (Without the Walker she can't stay standing for more than about 30 seconds before she falls.

The arrogant bastids improperly using the blue tag would usually argue they are due the privilege because of the "work" they do helping whoever is infirm.

Amen.

A lot of them are undiagnosed because you can't diagnose it in a single session. The BPD types typically never go back for a second session because, after all, everyone else is the problem...not them.

Some dickwad improperly using an HC parking space last week apparently caused me to follow some seriously overweight woman in an electric wheelchair all the way down to the end of parking lot in my pickup last week.
The woman was indeed handicapped, but didn't have sense enough to stay to one side of the driving lane to allow cars to go by her, and just went down the middle of the lane.

The whole day was lose-lose anyway, so I just took it in stride.

She asked a little girl who was the President and the girl said Obama, but he isnt a very good on.

It was so funny. I live in conservative heaven so.. everyone nodded.

639 Perhaps, Jamie Dimon can remind Obama that the economy is a wee bit off.

While Obama was chowing down on beluga caviar last night in a Beverly Hills Canyon with the A listers, led by George Clooney (an actor with about as much depth as Dr. Phil), his Wall Street bundler buddy, Jamie Dimon, and JP Morgan CEO was trying to explain away a 2Billion trading loss connected to derivative bets. Bets that are going to likely turn worse and worse as the market learns of JP Morgans untenable positions.

And naturally, Mr. Dimon is slated to become Obama's next Treasury Secty.

642 When the RNC gave Maryland's Michael Steele the boot
and went with Wisconsin's Reince Priebus instead, they definitely
traded up.

Posted by: mama winger at May 11, 2012 11:31 AM (P6QsQ)

I think being from Maryland really hurt Steele in that he was so used to always having to play nice-nice with the donks that he didn't know wtf to say whenever he was on a lib talk show (of which going on them in the first place was a big negative) and ended up stepping all over his johnson and getting everybody pissed off. On the good side of the ledger, he knew enough to keep his fucking yap shut during the 2010 elections and didn't engage in hissy fit turf wars with the Tea Party like Rove did when one of his squishballs got their pansy asses kicked. Priebus is doing a great job of staying out of the limelight and quietly getting things done in an effective manner. Rove has to be steamed that Lugar lost but he's kept his upper cock hole shut about it.

Don't let facts get in your way.

The trading loss is manageable -- it's a huge number but JPMorgan is a huge bank. And Dimon didn't try to explain away anything. he took responsibility and said that he would fix the problem.

Dimon and Obama do not get along nearly as well as they used to. There was a falling out after Obama began to demonize all banks and bankers.
