Rape of the Lock: Mitt Romney's Vicious High School Prank Against A Likely-Gay Classmate Led Inexorably To The Victim's Death By Natural Circumstances 46 Years Later

That's how I read the Washington Post's article about Romney.

The article attempts a Life of Two Men structure, documenting Romney's rise and his victim's fall. Most egregiously, it contrasts the very-much-later-in-life award of a Distinguished Alumni honor for Romney with this guy's death, both in 2005, as if these things are related.

Along the way it also notes there was some "veiled racism" at the school -- a football coach gave the nickname "Kamikazee" to a Japanese player --which doesn't have anything to do with Romney.

Oh, right, it was the "culture that shaped him." Also known as "America in 1959." I guess Obama wouldn't have had that insidious influence as a youngster, being off in Indonesia and such.

Anyway, here's the Vicious Prank that led to this man's Downward Spiral and eventually his Slow-Motion Death By Hazing in 2005.

Yes, he died in 2005. But by the way this article is written, it seriously attempts to suggest, between the lines, that his death by natural causes (at age 58 or thereabouts) was somehow all traceable back to Mitt Romney and the One Vicious Prank they could dig up.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

...

“It happened very quickly, and to this day it troubles me,” said Buford, the school’s wrestling champion, who said he joined Romney in restraining Lauber. Buford subsequently apologized to Lauber, who was “terrified,” he said. “What a senseless, stupid, idiotic thing to do.”

“It was a hack job,” recalled Maxwell, a childhood friend of Romney who was in the dorm room when the incident occurred. “It was vicious.”

“He was just easy pickins,” said Friedemann, then the student prefect, or student authority leader of Stevens Hall, expressing remorse about his failure to stop it.

The Washington Post continues on like this, documenting Romney's pranks, attempting to make them seem sinister. Like, when he poses as cop and rousts some fellow students for having bottles of alcohol in their car, they talk about the "terror" of the incident, because, you know, the students could be expelled for having alcohol, and that terror hangs over them.

Until they find out it's a gag, of course. But the Washington Post underscores that "terror."

One thing they only mention later: Romney was a senior at an all-boys school, and high in the unofficial leadership of it.

Now, what happens when boys are in that situation is that they engage in hazing and power-plays. In British schools, older boys will often rape younger boys. It usually has bad consequences to put boys in charge of other boys. Look at any fraternity during Hell Week.

However, this seems to have been the only mean thing Romney did in his high school career.

Did I mention this was high school?

Anyway, back to how this One Prank destroyed this man's life forever and led to his Suicide By Natural Causes 46 years later.

After lights out, John Lauber often left his door open....

“He was very quiet, not a jock,” said Steph Lady. “Very soft-spoken. I know nothing, probably gay, but who knows. We were so stupid and naïve. I know there was homosexuality there but we didn’t even have a word for it. And there was homophobia then, too.”

Victim. Oppressor. Writes itself, doesn't it?

On an overcast Saturday, David Craig, a senior prefect and day student, drove his car down Martell Drive along the school grounds and saw a figure duck into the hedges. He thought the person might be trespassing and stopped, only to find Lauber puffing on a cigarette. In a move that he said he later regretted as an excess of the “dorm trooper” mentality instilled by Cranbrook, Craig reported Lauber to the headmaster. Soon after, Lauber was expelled.

“He just disappeared,” Lady said.

Sudden disappearances at Cranbrook were not unheard of. Students might pass a dorm neighbor on the way to class and come back hours later, with all their belongings gone and their beds stripped by maintenance staff. Bad behavior and bad grades were not tolerated.

Yes, a strict private school is similar to the Soviet gulag and should be discussed using similar language.

...

On June 12, 1965, Romney concluded his Cranbrook career at a commencement ceremony at the Christ Church, in which his father delivered a keynote address reported on by the local papers.

“This is a special occasion for us as a family,” George Romney told the gathered boys before emphasizing that religion and “the one girlfriend whom you finally take the greatest interest in” and good health habits were critical for a successful life. So, he said, was character. “Developing character is going to be more important than your education from now on.” The ceremony concluded with all the boys singing a final rendition of their school song, “Forty years on.”

“Forty years on, when afar and asunder

Parted are those who are singing today,

When you look back, and forgetfully wonder

What you were like in your work and your play,

Then, it may be, there will often come o’er you,

Glimpses of notes like the catch of a song –

Visions of boyhood shall float them before you,

Echoes of dreamland shall bear them along,

Follow up! Follow up! Follow up!”

See, this is the bridge used to connect 1959 with 2004/2005. After all, Romney once quoted a poem called "Forty Years On." So he admits they're related!

Forty years on, Mitt Romney accepted the school’s 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award.

A year earlier, John Joseph Lauber died at a Seattle hospital.

From Advanced Forcible Haircut Trauma, but no newspapers ever reported that.

Mitt Romney has now apologized for pranks which "might have gone too far."

And yet John Joesph Lauber, the Human Seamus, remains dead.

None of your apologies will bring this shattered man back to life, Governor.

You murdered him with those scissors. The wound just needed 46 years to claim its victim.

***

The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another. Four of them — Friedemann, now a dentist; Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer; Thomas Buford, a retired prosecutor; and David Seed, a retired principal — spoke on the record. Another former student who witnessed the incident asked not to be named. The men have differing political affiliations, although they mostly lean Democratic. Buford volunteered for Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008. Seed, a registered independent, has served as a Republican county chairman in Michigan. All of them said that politics in no way colored their recollections.

Whenever the anti bully campaign came up and there actual events and what not on it, I was somewhat confused. After all, we owe 17 trillion dollars, 9% unemployment, the Arab spring is going on and we're discussing purple nurples?

2) Obama gives a teary-eyed announcement of his love for teh ghey marriage.

3) The NEXT DAY they publish a (apocryphal?) story that Romney bullied an possibly gay kid fifty years ago.

Step 1 was put in motion because they had that story in their back pocket, count on it.

All parents do this. They are the selfish people who gamble with the subjective happiness of another person, who didn't exist, but now will: Who will be born, suffer, know pleasures, and no that everyone he or she loves will *die*. What? That Dan Savage thing? It wasn't "anti-bullying" at all. It just urged gay kids and "allies" to bully those who weren't.

(Gay teen suicide in Iowa is way the hell up this year, partially due to this campaign. For awhile, the Des Moines paper was celebrating gay suicides on their front page every day to "raise awareness"--huge outpourings of love and esteem for the dead kids. Pictures of shrines and weeping classmates...then they ran article claiming to be perplexed by the copycats. Fucking assholes.)

LGBTQ activism.

The Q stands for "questioning." The organization targets children and plants ideas into their heads about being homosexuals.

So they kill or hurt themselves all because of gay activism.

Gay activists use the same marketing tactics as those vitamin hucksters.

Do you feel tired?
Have trouble sleeping?
Lost your libido?

90% of men over 30 will naturally answer in the affirmative to all 3 questions.

When gay activists go to schools and ask teens if they're feeling moody, depressed, confused about sexual matters, of fucking course most of them will say Yes! They're teens, after all.

But that's the hook.

After the gay activists have their attention, they plant homosexual ideas into their heads, thus further confusing the teens.

The European political structures could not support American conservativism even if such conservatives existed there, which they don't, really. In 1978, a young Barack Obama saw one of his gay classmates down in the mouth about being homosexual.

"Keep your chin up," he told Lamar Latrell. "Someday things will be different."

Went to "Our Lady of The Bleeding Knuckles" elementary school. The heck with the other boys - the nuns would regularly beat the crap out of us. Coming home with a nun's handprint on your face was a regular occurrence. Our only response was "Sister, please don't tell my parents". Because that would mean another hiding.

And the playground was just Lord of The Flies. In high school I was both picker and pickee. Part of being a teenage boy.

Luckily, I grew out of it. A few of the assholes I went to school with didn't. By all accounts Mitt has grown up to be an exemplary, successful, stand-up guy.

I got nothing but merciless teasing for YEARS, including this one really irritating asshole who liked to pull on my hair and yank out individual strands by the root, just for fun.

(That guy's dead now, btw, but I didn't kill him. They found him floating facedown in the Merrimack River about ten years after we graduated high school. I actually felt quite sorry for him. He had a shitty life.

This wasn't hazing. It likely literally (and I mean that in a non Joe Biden way) never occurred to Mitt that the guy might have been gay. People didn't think that back then; it never occurred to them. Now if you're not banging strangers every week people think you're crazy or a religious nut. But back then no high schooler thought in any serious way whether someone was gay or not.
But this stuff cracks me up -- this is the worst stuff they can find on Romney? That he cut someone's hair? He lectured others on drinking? When I was a wee thing he would take out his cruise book and read to us the parts about the ceremony, interspliced with his own memories of how goofy and fun the whole thing was. He happily went back to his life as a farmer in the hills of Northeast Mississippi, but he cherished his time with the USN until the day he passed away.

He came out as gay to his family and close friends and led a vagabond life, taking dressage lessons in England and touring with the Royal Lipizzaner Stallion riders. After an extreme fit of temper in front of his mother and sister at home in South Bend, he checked into the Menninger Clinic psychiatric hospital in Topeka, Kan. Later he received his embalmer’s license, worked as a chef aboard big freighters and fishing trawlers, and cooked for civilian contractors during the war in Bosnia and then, a decade later, in Iraq. His hair thinned as he aged, and in the winter of 2004 he returned to Seattle, the closest thing he had to a base. He died there of liver cancer that December.

363 Just got finished reading the treatise from the person who used olberdouche and then had him tossed away.

It's interesting how one can assume that something was done purely cause a person, as a high school student, is evil to the core.

Early this morning when I initially heard about this I was struck by the comment they said romney made "he can't look like that". My next thought was geez this guy has been worrying about everyone else from the beginning. Cause, if you know private all boys schools, you know that this was the new kid, he was quiet, he didn't look like everyone else and romney probably knew that if he didn't do something, the guy would be crucified by his fellow classmates for the hair. By cutting the hair, romney probably diffused the situation, and made the guys transition into the school easier. My gram says that hair in the 60's was very important, commented on a lot. Bet everyone in the school looked similar with their hair. This guy was new and on his way to being the outlier, possibly ostracized. It was more an act of kindness than hatred. Like when you tell the new secretary to wear a cardigan so no one sees the giant serpent tat on her arm.

And I really am not a fan of mittens at all...

That is what Obama is all about: replacing the "moral impurity" of strait-ness, white-ness, and male-ness with his utopian visions.

It is that insane ideology that is being taught in almost all universities and colleges, and it is the future ideology of what was once America.

379 Jeez, the rest of the MFM are having a field day with this. Top story at boston.com and of course the headline is "Teenaged Romney Bullied Student Believed Gay" Unfuckingbelievable.

This was 1965, right? My brother was a high school senior (public school) in 1965. He was a rebellious kid and grew his hair out, and once got hold of some ladies' hair bleach and bleached out the ends. He was not once scintilla gay, this was something boys were doing at that time to look like the cool teenage surfer dudes in the movies and just to be different.

I'll bet this kid at Cranbrook was one of those wannabe-hipster kids, trying to look cool and nonconformist. At that time any boy who was actually homosexual would never call attention to himself with a crazy haircut. Even 10 years later, when I was in a public high school, the gay boys I knew were desperate to look and act like everyone else as much as possible. Another tipoff is that the kid was expelled from Cranbrook after being turned in for smoking. That wasn't a "gay" thing to do in 1965, but it was a rebellious/hipster thing to do.

This is very bad journalism by the Post, and a classic case of using 2012 criteria to judge something that happened almost 50 years ago.

400 I went to an all-boys boarding school for high school. The school was located in (what used to be) the stix, and I doubt there was a single female within six miles of the joint. We students were strongly encouraged to frequent physical exercise by the admin to work off aggression and urges brought on by levels of testosterone only found in pubescent males. So, we played soccer and basketball and lifted weights and had NO qualms about vigorous, intensely physical games of Smear the Queer. Looking back on it, there probably were some gay kids there, and they probably ended up "smeared" on occasion, but the game was all about beating the ball carrier, not bashing teh gays. "Smear the Queer" - unfortunate name, I guess, but a hell of a game.

I recall that one of my more effeminate schoolmates measured his clothes in women's sizes. He bragged about being "a perfect size seven" in the laundry room during my first year of school. I lived with him for three more years. I never, ever beat his ass; hell, I didn't even mention his idiosyncrasy to anyone until after I had graduated and the school had closed its doors. That said, the dynamic of a single-gender school is different than a co-ed school, matters of sexuality are novel to teen boys awash in levels of testosterone that would be toxic to mature males (which screws with rational thought), and homosexuality is an uncomfortable topic for a bunch of warehoused, sex-starved teen males. Other than having an awareness of a newly activated libido and of the proximity of the nearest woman, teen boys I can totally see how an unfortunate "prank" like that pulled on Lauber could come to pass. (I scare-quoted "prank" because I interpret the event as an assault and battery. While I don't approve of Romney's alleged "prank," I do understand how something like that can occur.)

When the ninth or tenth run (I forget, there was so many) was rocketing down the third base line toward the plate, I impulsively stepped over the plate and made to block it as if there was going to be a real play instead of what was really going on which was the left fielder still trying to get the ball out of his glove.

Because of me the runner slid head first into the plate and cut his lip. Heard later he needed a couple of stitches and went to his prom looking pretty bad.

Ump really let me have it but left me in. Probably so I could suffer in shame for a few more innings. Forty years later I still feel awful about it.
