Overnight Open Thread (5-9-2012)

Evenin', 'rons and 'ronettes. It's a little bit of a grab-bag tonight, but let's do this thing!

Massachusetts honored its oldest living veteran, 104 year-old Irene Davey, today. She and her husband joined up together on the same day in '43 to serve in the big one. From an older interview:

"'Release a man to help your man' was a common motto of the time," Davey said from her Brown Street home. "What it meant was if a woman could take a man's job, that man was released to join the armed forces. That made the armed forces stronger, helping your man who was in the armed forces be that much safer."

A Smart Military Blog™ salute, Mrs. Davey, and thank you for your service.

That piece came a day late for the 67th anniversary of V-E Day, which I should've given a nod to in last night's post. You ask for an "exit strategy"? Complete and total victory seems to work just fine.

This guy hand-forged his own wedding ring. OUT OF A METEORITE.

Oh, hell no. He couldn't be content to do what millions of men the world over have done since time immemorial and go to the damned jewelry store and/or pawn shop. Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us, buddy.

Discovery's Oprah Problem

From its 2008 inception through Dec. 31, OWN may have lost as much as $330 million, based on Discovery’s annual 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Don't worry about poor Oprah, though. Like her buddy Obama, she loses other people's money when she makes "investments".

Barq's is made in Caffeinated and non-caffeinated versions.

I think it's mostly a state-by-state deal, I've mostly seen non-caffeine in Utah (obviously) and Nevada, I've seen both in California.

It's not a big label change, you have to check the ingredients. I think one says "no caffeine" in small red letters but I don't have any handy.

113 I'm pretty much in Jeff's camp myself. It's not so much the social harm that I mind, though. The weed just makes people boring. But it also makes them think they are utterly fascinating, so they won't fucking shut up.

You know how annoying it is when Democrats seem to speak and think in pseudo-profound bumper-sticker slogans? That's weed at work. Weed makes statements like "Arms should be for hugging" seem tremendously meaningful rather than idiotic.

And then weed makes one want to fucking discuss and analyze just how fucking meaningful the statement "Arms should be for hugging" really is, and how it relates to other, equally meaningful statements like "Coexist" and "Hope."

I favor decriminalization of assault on stoners. If some idiot reeking of the weed insists on boring my ears off with his latest in-depth analysis of the lyrics to "Teen Spirit" I should have the legal right to club him into unconsciousness.

Is it offensive? Yes, but it's pretty funny at parts too. One of the few good moments in X-3 was when they paid that little homage to "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch".

What kills me is he's using the Military to sell this, when something like only 2 to 4% of the general population is gay.

Considering that homosexuality maybe hunky dory with a lot of folks it's not exactly welcome in the military, so you have to figure they probably have a much lower percentage, maybe roughly 1/2 of 1%.

You'd probably better cut that figure down drastically when your looking at combat mos's - someplace where being gay would be very highly frowned on by your fellow soldiers, so lets say only 10% of that 1/2 of 1%.

So all in all he's talking about maybe 40 guys out of 80,000. Yup, you 40 fruit loops deserve my hugs and kisses. The rest of you can go fuck yourselves, by the way did you hear I killed Osama all by myself?

If you mine them that's true. Though my mom used to visit a place in Illinois where diamonds could be found on the surface. Most were only industrial grade but every few years somebody would find a gem quality one.

One of my friends younger brother found a gravel sized stone a few years ago that had to be meteoric. It was way heavier than a piece of magnetite of the same size, almost as heavy as galena. I would have been neat to section it. I've done my share of mineral prospecting and collecting and you I've never found anything like it.

I've driven across the replacement bridge a couple of times ad both times I was white knuckled on the other side. After the tragedy with the first bridge, the replacement has a couple of nice safety features such as those huge concrete bumpers around the base and a cable that runs the length and will trigger a warning if a span collapses.

Still, I hate that bridge.

Unlike the Dames Point Bridge here in Jax, where the cables are on the outside of the span, there's just that single line of cables down the middle of the Sunshine Skyway and only a 28" or so high concrete barrier between you and a steep drop below.

Dear San Fernando Valley, your turn for Obama-block on Thursday:

The President will be landing at LAX around 6 p.m. and will be transported, via helicopter and motorcade, to George Clooney's Fryman Canyon home, where the fundraiser will be held.

We do not expect that Ventura or Laurel Canyon boulevards, north of Ventura Boulevard, will be closed to traffic. However, there may be limited delays due to neighborhood street closures in the hills and emergency vehicles in the immediate vicinity.

For those driving on Laurel Canyon Boulevard and connecting streets north of Ventura Boulevard, please expect delays and/or road closures from about 5 to 8 p.m. If you live south of Ventura in Studio City, the LAPD has advised us that local access to the area will be virtually sealed off from about 8 to 10 p.m., meaning all local residents will need to show a current photo ID for home access

Police have advised residents in and near Fryman Canyon to stay home or make other arrangements during this time. Everyone else is advised to avoid the area as much as possible.

Make a plain sponge cake in a pyrex casserole dish. Do not add vanilla. Keep cake in dish, and pome lots of holes with a toothpick ( get the kids to help).
Warm two cans of root beer in a saucepan and thicken to a syrup. Can use pudding powder or a tich of starch. Pour over cake slowly with a large spoon until saturated. Refrigerate.

187 Gay marriage is another issue driven entirely by liberal bigotry and hate.

Gays could get "Domestic Partnerships" legalized in every state in a heartbeat if that's what they wanted. I doubt even Utah would demur.

But that's not enough for the Dan Savages of the world. They have to stick a thumb in the eye of religious people. "It's MARRIAGE!" "We're MARRIED!" "Look at us, everybody, we're MARRIED!" "I'm going to wear a white dress and we'll get someone to dress up as a minister and we'll tongue kiss in front of everyone!"

It's not about celebrating anyone's love, or winning society's approval. It's about shitting on the oldest religious ritual there is. It's about political power; the power to change the meaning of a word.

The gay lobby in America has a drama addiction. They have to keep cranking up the tension. Every few years they come up with some new outrage which must not only be tolerated but celebrated, and when anyone objects they shriek about how VICTIMIZED they're being.

undermine the notion of fidelity to another person. It's about

228 People who are for gay marriage are really for children being raised by anyone other than their actual parents. They want to break the whole idea of family and the biological relation between the members of a family. That is really what they want. They want it to be "normal" where a child doesn't know who their actual parents are ... or care, as if that could ever be possible, given human nature.

It's an old leftist idea - to remove the kids from the biological family. Israeli kibbutzim used to do this. All children, after a brief time, were transferred to the community house to be raised as no ones actual child, but as "kids of the community". This ended up being so utterly repulsive (even to out-of-their-mind leftists that the practice died on the kibbutzim after not more than a generation and a half or two. Even the ones who wanted it to be true couldn't take the unnatural feel of the situation.

277 The black vote thingconfuses me a great deal. Here's an anecdote with a very small sample size, but I think it's revealing.

I have a younger (but who isn't) black friend. Postgraduate degree holder. Professional. Well compensated. So conservative he makes me look like a lefty. He worked on the campaign staff of one of our R senators in 2008.

We talked a lot about Obama prior to the election. He thought it was a joke. He knew all the things we all knew and that everybody knows now. The day after the election, I was commiserating the results with him and he looked kind of sheepish. He told me when he got the ballot in his hand, he just couldn't not vote for the black man - that he felt some kind of historical pressure. Now in OK, that one vote or any total of such black votes made no difference in the results at the state level.
OK. Now he's grown back up. No worries about the race issue. He'll support Romney. But he tells me his black friends will all mark the paper for Obama, and that they are all very much aware of his policies, tendencies and anti-American stance on almost everything.

I just don't get it.

298 The JEF speaks to me, via email:

Friend --

Today, I was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer:

I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

I hope you'll take a moment to watch the conversation, consider it, and weigh in yourself on behalf of marriage equality:

I've always believed that
gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally. I was
reluctant to use the term marriage because of the very powerful
traditions it evokes. And I thought civil union laws that conferred
legal rights upon gay and lesbian couples were a solution.

But over the course of several years I've talked to friends and family
about this. I've thought about members of my staff in long-term,
committed, same-sex relationships who are raising kids together. Through
our efforts to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, I've gotten to
know some of the gay and lesbian troops who are serving our country with
honor and distinction.

What I've come to realize is that for loving, same-sex couples, the
denial of marriage equality means that, in their eyes and the eyes of
their children, they are still considered less than full citizens.

Even at my own dinner table, when I look at Sasha and Malia, who have
friends whose parents are same-sex couples, I know it wouldn't dawn on
them that their friends' parents should be treated differently.

So I decided it was time to affirm my personal belief that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

I respect the beliefs of others, and the right of religious institutions
to act in accordance with their own doctrines. But I believe that in
the eyes of the law, all Americans should be treated equally. And where
states enact same-sex marriage, no federal act should invalidate them.

Right now I'm having a debate about gay marriage on facebook. Fun!

300 But he tells me his black friends will all mark the paper for Obama, and that they are all very much aware of his policies, tendencies and anti-American stance on almost everything.

Google Lemmings - that might help clear things up. Lol.. ok, seriously. Thing is the vast majority of the black community has been hornswaggled for years by these so called "civil" rights "leaders" ala Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton.

They have been told the reason they aren't more successful, better educated, etc, etc is not their fault, it's the fault of the dreaded evil majority keeping them oppressed.

Naturally it's bull crap - but its so easy to buy into it because then you can blame your problems on someone else. Better yet, as a "special class" you get to be all insulted whenever you don't get anything you want. Obviously your not being treated fairly.

It's a very difficult mindset to overcome. Even those that do overcome it often don't want to mention it. Many of us conservatives have spoken about how we remain silent in the presences of liberals. Just imagine for a moment how it is to be a black conservative. Your not just a horrible hateful conservative, your a race traitor.

So no, it's not a wonderful thing that some black conservatives fold under that pressure - but hey, I guess I'm not willing to judge them to harshly because the pressure they are under is so much worse than it is for a vanilla conservative.

326 I think homosexuals have always had exactly the same "rights" as heterosexuals in regards to marriage. Any homosexual man, for instance, is "free" to marry any woman he wishes and who will marry him. That woman could be either heterosexual or homosexual. No difference in "rights".

What the homosexual community wants is special consideration, beyond those afforded heterosexuals. This is what irks me; the "I'm special" factor.

Oh, yeah. While I'm on a rant, might as well hit on my general anger that a perfectly good word has been hijacked by the homosexual community. Gay can no longer be used as a descriptive adjective as originally intended and that's a shame. Most homosexuals I know don't come anywhere close to gay on a regular basis. More like bitter.

Let me stress this is just my opinion. I shouldn't have been so adamant about it, but I would never touch it, myself. Never. Never. Never. I would not be looking to customize my brain chemistry just to quit smoking, especially since the possible side effects of such aren't worth the consequences.

But, like I said, I've tripped many times on many things, so I'm not averse to altering my neurophysiology. Maybe I'm just being hypocritical, but I would just never use something so strong to just try to quit smoking. I don't know why, but from the first second I heard about Chantrix I didn't like anything about it. Then when I started hearing about the side effects, that was it for me. But I would never touch Ambien or anything like that, either and I would warn people against that, so you can figure that attitude of mine into the calculation.

Not exactly. It says later that it's the federal government's responsibility to make sure that such state licenses are within reason and not imposing on other states. The DOMA is exactly what the Constitution says the federal government should do, the correct way, which is why the opposition to it (on Constitutional grounds, LOL) is so friggin infuriating.

379-I watched the first season, I can't take the second season, and the AMerican gypsies make me sick. What I find most frustrating is that they demand acceptance by "normal" society, but refuse to follow the rules of normal society. "We do it this way because it's the gypsy way..yada yada..." when the gypsy way is generally illegal. I am a bit dumbfounded at their absolute astonishment that non gypsies would take offense at their behavior. So yeah, a pretty sick society, over all.

In Eastern Europe, there are large cohorts of gypsies in the main cities, and you have to be really, really careful, because they are excellent pickpockets.

This is what I find irritating about religious people in this country. Not you t-birds, just generally. I will grant you that many, if not most people, are unwilling or unable to live an individualistic lifestyle and create and autonomous identity. I totally accept that and I could care less as long as I'm free to do so.

But, that being the case, why can't religious proponents realize that government is in competition with religion to capture people, along with every other collective for that matter.

You want religion to have more influence in society? Reduce the influence of government in society!

It's win-win. You don't have to compete with government and I can live in a free country.

Because the second part of the article stipulates exactly that. No one state has the right to determine the laws of other states. Congress is to step in when there is a serious clash of such between States and resolve it with federal legislation.

405 394, I thought the travellers and gypsies were the same-but they could be different. On the Continent, gypsies are the Roma-dark skinned, move into open fields, and then get run off after a few days, and essentially steal whatever isn't locked up or nailed down. But I suppose the Irish travellers would, in fact, be completely different from the Roma. Here in the US, the travellers were Roma also, rather than Irish.

How many of those Irish travellers also have affiliation with the IRA? Could that be a reason they dislike the Brits so much?

I believe the intent was, if two States had a problem with a License, Congress would then decide which State was correct... Not tell another State to ignore it...

Otherwise the two parts don't make sense when put together.

But then a lot of the Constitution if that way. If you pick and choose individual phrases, you can contort it out of its intent... when by reading the whole thing... its pretty clear what they meant...

Like the General Welfare clause... which if you read the whole phrase, is a LIMITATION to what Congress can do (laws must be for the GENERAL welfare, not the welfare of a few)... not as its read today, as Carte Blanche Federal power...

I have to disagree. States have always done stuff that clashed with other states. The determination of death is a state issue and until the states all signed a compact, you could be legally "dead" in one state and moved to another where you were still "alive". That wasn't a pressing issue (as dead people, or even nearly dead people, rarely do much interstate travel - though one instance is enough for lawyers to declare it a general principle and the Leftist version of the Commerce Clause would come into full authority) and was finally resolved by the states, themselves, but the least intrusive way of the federal resolving such issues is to legislate on the Effects of certain state laws on other states rather than telling one state that they cannot do something because one other state doesn't like it. No state has veto power over the laws of any other state and Congress is not empowered to nullify one state's laws on the complaint of another the same way one state cannot force another to follow whatever it decides.

Of course, there is a point at which two states are just too different and at odds to share the same federal government, for which no federal laws can help.

I believe that DOMA is exactly what the Constitution prescribes for a case such as this. The federal government will not recognize a certain thing as marriage (as the feds have a recognized need for a definition of family - which was always just taken for granted as it was obvious to normal people) and states can have those types of twisted definitions in their law but they cannot export them out.

There were some practical reasons for that kibbutz arrangement. There were a crap ton of orphans in the post-war era leading to the big emigrations to nascent Israel. The kibbutz started out more as a way of dealing with a situation where there were far more kids than families to place them with.

It died off largely because the need had ended and nobody really wanted to live like that once they had a functioning nation. Nobody especially wanted it all that much in the first place, despite how some tried to romanticize it.

That's just not true - the part about it being by need. It was leftist dogma. It was only one of many twisted ideas the kibbutzim attempted in their drive to create leftist paradises.

GameStop is selling a lot more download codes these days. The amount of display area given over to DLC items was a real eyebrow raiser when I went into a GameStop recently after a few months.

They know what happened to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, and they know the business is going to shift more and more to downloaded content. So they're trying to plan things to maximize the profits while it's still a retail business and wind down the company and shift into something else. The company notably gets the shortest leases they can on the store spaces. When the time comes they can start reducing their store density on fairly short notice with a minimum of losses. At any given moment a GameStop with at least one other store within five miles has a lease coming up for renewal in less than three months.

They won't come out and say the BM video game selling business is doomed but they're perfectly positioned for it.

What does that have to do with the fact that the kibbutzim were designed and setup by true believer radical leftists? So your relatives were pushed into a a kibbutz and weren't leftists ... so what? I stayed on kibbutzim for a few years without being a leftist, too. That has nothing to do with how they were conceived and built.

And the kibbutzim set up long before the establishment of the State, never had more than a very small percentage of the Jewish population in Israel. Very small (though they turned out a hugely disproportionate number of the elite fighters, probably due to being farming communities.)

Kibbutzim were set up as leftist enclaves. Yes, they were needed for defense for a long time (and did very well in that respect) but they were intended to be socialist paradises. For those who weren't such radical leftists there were the moshavim. Again, that does not mean that every single person on a kibbutz or moshav leaned left. Of course not. But that was what they were set up to be and that was how their rules were designed.

Ever hear of a synagogue on a kibbutz (not the later kibbutzim, but for the first half century of them)? No, you don't. Why is that? What did the kibbutznics (not your relatives, of course, but the ones who made the kibbutz) have against synagogues?

I never heard of a synagogue on a kibbutz but I never heard anything said about the opposite either. The subject never came up.

The kibbutz was the size at which the only viable communist societies ever worked. Extended families/tribes. There were similar things like the Oneida colony. Beyond that tiny scale it just doesn't work. You need a more sophisticated model to have working, growing society. Thus the kibbutz was a self-limiting model. It isn't surprising that it sounded a lot like a summer camp to American Jewish kids hearing it described. That was the pitch when it was dying off. A fair number of teens from a few years older than me saw as a way to see a distant part of the world and were shocked to discover hard work unlike anything they'd experienced in their lives but wouldn't have been unfamiliar to any sharecropper's son. I remember the better ones coming home a lot more mature than when they left and certainly far more appreciative of what they had here.

487 Also, epobirs, kibbutznics were not allowed to have any personal money (though many cheated), jobs were rotated according to leftist theory (everyone gets a chance at everything) and pretty much every other hair-brained leftist scheme you've ever heard of.

I learned everything I ever needed to know about leftist theory from my time on kibbutzim. What they want and why their ideas are totally unworkable - even at the perfect level of the kibbutzim (between 100 and 5000 people) with intelligent people who were committed to the cause (save ones who went there out of need or were assigned there). There's a very good reason why the kibbutzim kept doing what they were doing until they were pretty much all broke (even after the huge state support in the later years). A few got lucky and made it with hits on their factories, but the great bulk found that everything they thought about people was wrong. Eventually, they had to install individual electric meters and start having individuals pay for their own use (out of their kibbutz allowances) because the community use method found that no one cared about the cost and were totally wasteful with just about everything.

Yes, there appeared a few religious kibbutzim in the later years, but they were never more than a tiny fraction of the kibbutzim. As you say, one can do both but they eventually clash in extreme ways - especially Judaism which is individualistic in nature (even though it is tribal in terms of the nation as a whole).

It works fine for a stagnant society. Any growth or advancement kills any leftist structure dead, though the leftist structures fight back like crazy before they go.

Leftism is the theory of the static, which is why I call leftists Staticists (rather than Statists). It's all about viewing the world as if nothing will ever change so that all things can easily and efficiently be codified and centralized. If you have 0 population growth and no technological or industrial progress then leftist structures work just fine. Of course, stagnation is death, but that's just a minor hassle

You don't need to be anti-religion to not have much need for a synagogue or church. I'm most definitely not a leftist but neither am I an observant Jew. But I regard myself as a Jew and those who wish Jews harm would certainly regard me as such. If I'm looking for a place to live, access to a synagogue is way, way down on my list of priorities.

The leftist may claim to be anti-religion but what they're really about is anti-competition for their own faith. I'm not a big fan of religion in general but the nastiest manifestations in recent centuries is the madness that conquered the Russians and Chinese in a way the Muslims could only dream of accomplishing. The Commies learned some of their techniques from the Islamic hordes and in turn taught them back to a new bunch of Muslims. The PLO was a pretty irreligious hardcore lefty bunch for a long time, too. (Is there something in the water in that part of the world?)

There have always been plenty like me who identified with their ancestral religion as a culture but had little interest in the mythology.

That is widespread among Euro descended groups. A bigger problem for Jews is the number of children born who don't identify as Jewish. Of my eight nieces and nephews I think only two of them have any depth of knowledge of what it means. Two of them may have been largely raised as some form of Christian following my brother's divorce but I've little information of what their life with their mother was like in that regard.

For the most part, I don't think any of them strongly identifies with any faith. I'm not big on religion but understanding history remains important.

No argument from me. I'm the same. Though I do very much like to have a synagogue around, even if I don't go too often. I'm a conservative Jew ... you know, we hire orthodox rabbis to be observant for us

Nowadays, when I do go it's to an orthodox synagogue. I got roped into the Spanish+Portuguese ones for the longest time. Interesting. They call their rabbis "reverend" (which is really just an Anglicization of "rabbi", I assume, same root) but it always felt a bit weird. And the Spanish/Portuguese synagogue in New York had a choir, which really threw me for a loop. I'd never run into such a thing.

On the bright side, the Sephardic Jews are much more lenient on what is kosher for passover, which really helps. I tend to keep that and do the fasts, for the most part.

The Israeli Jews are reproducing - even the secular ones. They have an average of around 3 kids. They used to joke about it saying you need two for replacement and one extra, just in case. That was back a few years back when bombs were going off left and right in the cities, but I don't think it's changed much in the last 5 years.

Posted by: chemjeff at May 10, 2012 03:23 AM (7Fad

Just praying for the most part. The Sh'ma is the big thing. It's the prayer that's in the mezzuzah on the door, which all Jews must affix. It reminds Jews of our relationship and covenant with G-d. The real importance in Jewish prayer revolves around the reading of the Torah, which happens weekly. The entire Torah is read once a year, the same exact way.

The most important observance in Judaism, however, is the sanctity of Shabbat. Other than Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) Shabbat rules over everything. To not set the Shabbat aside as a special day and abide by the laws of it is about the worst thing (in terms of violating the rules of observance) that a Jew can do and the Jewish Nation is constantly warned that it leads to ill for the Nation. Most Jews today (myself included) do not observe Shabbat, and frankly, I can fast all I want and keep kosher for passover or whatever else, but without sanctifying the Shabbat it is all for naught, really.

Those are the broad strokes. Someone else might have something to add (or correct - with two Jews you get three opinions on everything).

It ain't no walk in the park, that's for sure. And a whole bunch of weird rules have been fashioned to accommodate modern technology. Jews aren't allowed to "do any work" on Shabbat, which used to mean not allowed to make fires but later got translated to not being allowed to turn lights on (or off). Orthodox Jews get around this with automatic timers (which I always viewed as cheating, really, but this happens with all the laws). If you think the parsing of lawyers in America is bad ... you've got to see how Jews have parsed the religious law. But, this is what we do. The Talmud is the parsing of the law of the Torah and it will make your head spin.

Judaism was set up as a governing system (we were pretty much the first nation with an abstract notion of citizenship and a passport - circumcision) in addition to its religious aspect, so there are rules for many, many things. This law, however, was never supposed to be enforced anywhere but in the promised land and never applied to any non-Jews outside (and most not even for non-Jews living in Israel). This was workable because Jews were never to proselytize (and never have, save one or two extraordinary circumstances in history). We were given a limited, finite piece of land and that was it. No more. There is to be no land expansion outside of that. It's limited government, in this way, though Jews are bound by the Law wherever they are.

Not magic or anything, but religious underwear that orthodox Jews wear to have the fringes on the corners of their clothes as the Torah instructs. That will shut down that anti-Mormon underwear argument pretty quickly.

Good article.

I used to talk about the Outer Space Treaty a lot. It's Communism in Space, basically. Bad, bad stuff. I had no idea Barky was trying to move ahead on that idiocy.

No offense taken. Much of the Torah tells of Jews making exactly this complaint. The story of the Exodus and how the people hassled Moses all the way from Egypt to the border of Israel and harangued him about this point is par for the course.

We're still here, though

Okay, now I'm really done.

620 Gooood morning Vic. I always take the wrong week off. Fishing's been slow. Brought home only six yesterday. But all
were 11 inches or better. Two over 13 and one pushing 16. That boys and girls is a crappie. Dip in egg & milk, then Harold Ensley's coating mix and into the hot oil. Yum.
