| President Gutsy Call: Okay With Giving Campaign Speeches in Afghanistan; Too Craven To Give Them In North CarolinaNC is voting on an anti-gay-marriage referendum today. As this causes some complications for the GCMOTUS (Gutsy Call Maker of the United States), he's chickening out. President Barack Obama was scheduled, albeit briefly, to visit North Carolina on Election Day to make an speech in Asheville about the economy. But the White House sent the notice Wednesday last week but reversed course about five hours later, saying the trip wasn’t taking place, according to a North Carolina congressional office notified about the trip. The false alarm isn’t unprecedented — but the fact the White House even considered visiting the state on primary election day is interesting. This is a big old sticky wicket for Obama. The press corps is openly laughing at Jay Carney's absurd insistence that Obama is still "evolving," and doesn't know if he'll endorse gay marriage... after the election. Hey, he needs some "space" on this issue. He'll have more flexibility after the elections, you know. Ed Rendell says he should just "man up" and admit what's obvious to everyone. Comments1

The cynicism is pervasive - not just the President playing hide the ball or whatever, but gay groups playing along that yeah he says that but doesn't mean it. Why does Obama get a pass on being against gay marriage and Romney is a mean old homophobic guy (as an example).

The gay marriage thing is the only issue getting any press. All of it anti-, of course. If it passes as expected, the Obama team has a big problem. All the free good publicity in the world didn't save the Prog cause. If it passes bigger than expected (I'd say 10-12% would be the cutoff), then he might as well ditch his NC strategy altogether. Convention in Charlotte complicates things, and could turn out to be an embarrassingly bad choice. When you can pick home field, why pick a neutral one?

Gentle reader,
While it is inconsiderate to accept a date and then cancel at the last minute, sometimes more important matters do arise which require one's personal attention. Staying home with the girls and making snickerpoodles trumps other more mundane activities. Sharing time, recipes and dogmeat with family creates memories (or dreams) which can, apparently, last a lifetime. If it was because a tee time opened up, then, yes, it was gauche. What's truly frustrating is that we have a real, genuine problem in the issue of marriage and it isn't about psychological validation. Marriage is put off beyond what nature can handle. That kind of marriage has a fundamental effect on society and whether we function as a people. Instead, it's about some theoretical possibility of engaging in the institution some day when one is geriatric. We already have a problem with the idea that marriage is viewed as something engaged in by old people. This is not helping. Posted by: AmishDude at May 08, 2012 02:24 PM (J5tI6) 65

If Obama's stance on gay marriage is REALLY evolving, there's no telling what it could become.
In fact, since evolution is a blind, undirected process, how do we even know that his opinions will evolve in a more liberal direction? Obama may decide to criminalize lesbian hand holding, or he may declare martial law in Massachusetts. Can we even trust a president, like Obama, who has admitted (with the word "evolving") that the ideas in his mind are not under rational control? For all we know, if he wins reelection and steps up to take the oath of office, his head will open up like an egg and a salamander will slither out--and the mainstream media will shout, "Yea! Legs!" If Obama is a Muslim, then chances are he IS opposed to gay marriage. The problem is, the gay marriage advocates in his party, of which there are many, want their particular meat to pass through his lips. That he won't swallow it is very possibly the double distaste he has for admitting his religious preference as well as the policy consequences thereof.

Unpopularity with who? Obama's base loved it. Their only complaint was not getting an immediate shift to single-payer.
Umm... the American People. As a rule. Didn't something like 66% disapprove, at one point? Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying it was noble of him to stand for this issue: the opposite, in fact- it's disturbing that the only issue where he was willing to stand up against the opinion polls is something so bad. But America hated it with a hot, hot hate. They (we) especially hated how the Democrats were subverting the process. And Obama stood there looking like the cat who got the canary, and stood firm. Beside screwing up the message, the timing, and the angle of this post-election fake promise to the gays, they're really knocking it out of the park this news cycle.

If a strong majority disapproved, they had a funny way of showing it. The 2010 elections should have been a slaughter but the shift wasn't especially dramatic. If people really cared all that much and in those numbers it isn't showing up in the booths. A lot of that is why they designed ObamaCare to take so long to have serious damaging effect. The short memory of the electorate. Posted by: epobirs at May 08, 2012 03:02 PM (kcfmt) 104

It's not about the gay marriage thing, it's more about the fact that North Carolina has all the wrong breeds of dogs for the presidential palette... True that the state dog, yes we have one, is a Plott Hound, whatever the fuck that is, it is too big to eat at one sitting. http://tinyurl.com/4xyj5e3 Posted by: Billy Bob, pseudo-intellectual at May 08, 2012 03:05 PM (hXJOG) 105
If it passes bigger than expected (I'd say 10-12%
would be the cutoff), then he might as well ditch his NC strategy altogether. Convention in Charlotte complicates things, and could turn out to be an embarrassingly bad choice. When you can pick home field, why pick a neutral one? Posted by: at May 08, 2012 02:06 PM (HethX) It will pass by 20%.. PPP poll, democrats, said 16. 20%! NC is NOT going for Barry, trust me on this. Obama faced disapproval of Obamacare within his own ranks: key Democrat votes were needed to pass the nightmare bill. He had to buy Landrieu's vote, and lied to so-called pro-life Dems in order to get them to vote for it, promised Kucinich a ride on AF1 to get him to switch. That's where Pelosi came in. Obama did not have Clue Number One on how to accomplish any of this. It was her plan, her process, and yes he took credit for it and spiked the ball. I think the 2010 resultswere dramatic. Enough state legislatures went GOP in a critical redistricting year. Asheville would be a bad place for Obama today. Asheville is to NC as Key West is to FL and San Fran is to CA. Huge gay community there. OTOH, the rest of NC will support the only amendment on the ballot, the marriage amendment by wide margins. I voted in NC-8 this morning, proudly voted for Robinson to kick Kissell out in Nov., and for the next republican governor, Pat McCrory. 2012 is not going to see a lot of blue in NC, conventions notwithstanding.

Fats Eddy is wrong. His support for gay marriage will expose him as the Left ideologue he is. It will be a prism through which the "white, working class" voter will consider whether they want to give him another four.

O.C. Smith aka Neoma O.C. (Smith) Crawford was the daughter of Wyatt Smith. There is YDNA results for Wyatt Smith's descendants, through his son brother of Neoma O.C. (Smith) Crawford. Chances are if her brother wasn't Cherokee, halo type C or Q, neither was she.

If Obama comes out for Gay Marriage, then Black Church leaders will turn away from him and he will lose much of the Black GOTV efforts that Black Churches provide. This will guarantee he loses badly in November.

I am gay and many of my friends are gay. They are, for the most part, liberals or lefties. I met them all when I was a lib too and they have remained good friends for 20+ years. I remember at least twice in the last few years more than one of them agreeing that Obama didn't impress them on the gay rights issues they care about (I don't talk politics with them as I am not a lib anymore).
