Sunday Morning Miscellany

It's like an open thread but with some lame nod to content.

First...the crazy thing atop the sidebar? Yeah, it's that time. What? Do you think content free posts are cheap or something?

Second...What would Obama do in a 2nd term? Pretty much what you fear.

Everyone from Obama’s closest advisers to the GOP’s top tacticians agrees that the first year of a second term — and perhaps even more than that — would be “fiscal.” That is to say, it would be devoted to budget and tax issues.

At the end of 2012, we’ll face what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke calls “the fiscal cliff”: The Bush tax cuts are set to expire, the $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts initiated when the deficit “supercommittee” failed to reach a deal are set to begin, we’re expected to hit the debt ceiling again, and many other programs and tax credits will come up for renewal.

Around the Hill, they refer to this as “taxmageddon.” And it won’t wait for a second Obama term to officially begin: Most of it will come due in the lame-duck session. But everyone expects that the outgoing Congress will manage to kick the problem to the incoming Congress.

...

Beyond the deficit, Obama’s advisers see two big unfinished pieces of business from the first term: climate change and immigration reform. Of these, it’s easier to imagine the president taking action on immigration, in large part because it’s easier to imagine Republicans coming to the conclusion that they need to support some version of reform.

...

Assuming that the Supreme Court doesn’t totally wipe out the Affordable Care Act, the law will begin covering uninsured Americans in 2014. But there’s an enormous amount of work to do to get ready for that date, and once the law goes into effect, there will be an enormous amount of work needed to iron out the kinks. If the court strikes down the individual mandate — which requires Americans to have health insurance or pay a fine — but leaves the rest of the legislation intact, that process becomes even more difficult and might require some kind of deal with Congress.

Mmmm....massive tax hikes, climate change, amnesty and more government control of health care! Noticeably absent? The economy.

I'm not the biggest Romney guy (no, it's true) but the idea of another Obama term is pretty bleak. Sorry but if you live in a swing state, you really need to suck it up and vote for Mitt.

Third....the French are voting today in their presidential runoff. Sarkozy is terrible but from an American perspective, he's about the best we can hope for (plus...Carla Bruni). Unfortunately, the French are very likely to go with a wacko Socialist who wants more spending, a lower retirement age and a 75% income tax rate.

Personally, I hope they go full retard. We might as well laugh at them as we all sink into another global recession.

Speaking of going full retard....the Greeks are also voting today. What could go wrong?

And more full retard.....Joe Biden went on Meet the Press today and as expected hilarity ensued. He either totally came out in favor of Same Sex Marriage or didn't say anything new. No one is quite sure because, well, it's Joe "Big F'n Deal" Biden.

As I said on Twitter (where you should follow me for all the free prizes and hookers I give out), this is either Joey being Joey or a brilliant ploy but Team Obama to get everyone to think they agree with them.

Since the media can't make heads or tails of what they are supposed to say, they'll do what they always do, ignore Obama's opposition to same sex marriage and focus on GOP opposition to it.

Ben covered this a bit in yesterday's ONT but it's worth noting....Obama's big election "kick off" (yes, they really pretended that's what it was) wasn't so big. Plenty of good seats still available!

And finally...the tip jar thing in the headlines. Ace gets all the money and he never even knows we're doing this. Consider it an investment in maintaining your sanity over the next six months.

This "fiscal cliff" is NOTHING compared to what is going to happen when the Fed finally is forced to drain liquidity. There ain't nothing that has prepared America for that. Not even the credit crisis of 2008.

Of course, we all should understand that the Fed clearly will not drain liquidity of their own volition. They won't do it until they are forced by the markets to do it. At that point .... it's just too, too late.

The leadership of France has absolutely no bearing on the world, at all. THey are both idiots and France will always come around to stabbing America in the back. They're just looking for the right opportunity - the dumbest possible time to do it - and then, no matter who leads France, they'll set to their cultural need of back-stabbing.

There is nothing more meaningless than a French election.

The cast is great, and kicking things into high gear now that the basics are fully established. The script is jam-packed with sex, laffs and action. It builds nicely on the first-season cliffhanger. Plus, well, Irene Adler, and not the weak sauce from the Robert Downey movie version.

Take the printed money back out of the system. They have to do it or interest rates will hit nose-bleed levels.

Right now the Fed's balance sheet (which should be around 0) is at $3 trillion (and they have other issues that aren't exactly on the sheet but have the same effect). Every dollar the Fed prints and pumps into the financial system for "liquidity" must eventually be withdrawn. The pain of withdrawing, of course, as with all drugs, is much worse than the benefits and fun that were had by its injection.

You can tell how bad the situation is because we have the lowest interst rates in history and yet the federal debt is concentrated in the shortest terms ever, meaning that we are extremely sensitive to interest rate rises. Normally, given interest rates this low you would want to be selling nothing but long-term bonds, locking those rates in for decades. But, we can't. The only buyers of long-term US debt is .... the Fed.

It's very, very bad.

The only solution is to grow out of it (though with much pain) but with every passing day and continued accumulation of debt, that possibility gets more remote. This was the threat that made the 2008 election so critical, since AMerica was looking at Barky, whose orientation was "anti-growth" (to be overly charitable) and whose election would condemn America to a debt spiral, at best. But McShame didn't understand this and the topic never even got a bit of press.

We still can emerge from this intact, but it will be incredibly difficult and we'll have to go through some really hard times. The question is whether America can take that pain without experiencing another psychotic break (and voting back in the money printers and wild spenders to put off the pain for ... one more quarter ... one more month ... one more day ...).

The key to monetizing a debt (which is never good, but can be done in proper circumstances without destroying everything) is that you can only monetize a stable debt. You can't monetize an increasing debt. I'm not sure why this very simple and obvious fact has not seen one minute of public discussion from anyone.

Rubio? I started feeling that way maybe a couple of months ago ago and tuned him out. This is the first time I've listened to him in a while and I thought, hmmmm, that's why I liked him in the first place. Although it seemed pretty obvious that he's auditioning hard to get on the ticket with Romney.

74 I was looking at an old clip of the notorious concert at Altamont in 1969, the one where the Stones hired on The Hells Angels to help with security

Grace Slick was an idiot, but she was a HOT idiot

Paul Kantner was a total douchebag back then too

78 I dunno. I said on the earlier thread that I am aware I am the only person who feels this way, but the more I hear him talk to less I hear what he has to say.

---

Actually, I have concerns about him, too. I thought his foreign policy speech at the Brookings Institute (4/25) was troubling in its naivete. (You can read the text at the Weekly Standard.)

And I do not like the DREAM Act stuff. What I've read about it in news reports does not look like it has any pluses. If it were a way to identify the parents and deport them, but allow the kids to stay to finish their educations or something, that might be one thing. (MIGHT) But I see no enforcement coupled to it. But mostly, the timing is horrible. Making life easier for the kids who were brought here by illegal aliens is simply not a priority right now. And anything on the national level of this sort is a mistake. Let the states deal with things as best they can until we get federal enforcement of the border.

I haven't given up on Rubio, but it has reinforced for me that he needs to stay in Congress and (re)establish his conservative creds. Being VP to a centrist (at best) POTUS would not be good. He's not established enough to serve as a counter-weight.

106 When you watch the herons, you'll see there are five. One is much smaller than the others b/c it's several days younger. However, I am learning that herons feed the entire brood, they don't favor the strongest chicks, so the little one seems to be holding his own just fine.

The older ones are really starting to look prehistoric.

Also, they have a night-vision camera so you can watch at night as well.

112 If the court strikes down the individual mandate — which requires Americans to have health insurance or pay a fine — but leaves the rest of the legislation intact, that process becomes even more difficult and might require some kind of deal with Congress.

As many have noted, this is the worst case scenario. Barry gets to destroy the private health insurance industry and use the crisis to impose NHS style Single Payer. In effect, Medicaid for all.

It seems that, according to a retired General, the WH was told of bin Laden's location in Abbottabad, in Summer 2010, but refused to take action ... the general says the WH wanted a photo of OBL before moving.

So, apparently JEF, Jarret and company needed 9 months before acting / being forced to act ...

This could use a bit of play over the summer, certainly ever time JEF talks about scoring OBL ... did he really wait 9 months? Why insist on a photo? They aren't needed for drone strikes ...

115 How was the dog show?
------
Well, I kind of blew it and failed to get there before they did the Australian Shepherd and Collie judging. (We are thinking of getting a second dog and trying to decide between the two.) But it was still fun. There were so many gorgeous dogs there in the conformation ring of different breeds. Many Aussies and Shetlands, but only a couple of collies (that we saw, having missed the breed showing), but afterwards the Man decided that he wants to stick with a collie if we can find one. (And I agree.) Aussies coats are not really that much easier than rough collie coats, so there's not a big up side, maintenance-wise.

Also watched the folks doing the performance stuff, which was fun.

>>A friend has a new Papillon puppy (8 months
>>old) and she is just the best little dog ever, I'm in love.

Saw a papillon run the course. Man, was it fast! They are a very cute small dog breed; one of the few small dogs I think I'd like.

124 The report said Obama's got an evolving position on gay marriage and that Joe Biden didn't speak to it. Joe Biden's office said that Joe spoke "to his own evolving on gay marriage." When they say they evolve, they want to attach intelligence and heroism to what we used to call "shiftiness". Now we have shiftiness squared, as Obama slyly has a form of shiftiness they do not want to be confused with Biden's shiftiness.
