| Overnight Open Thread (5-03-2012)So How Popular Is/Was Your Name? Well head over to the Baby Name Wizard and find out. It gives you the popularity of baby names by year and by region. For instance here's 'Brandon' - clearly a super trendy name in the 80's and 90's. Currently the top names for girls are Isabella, Sophia, Emma, Olivia, and Ava; and for boys it's Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Jayden, and William. And it's also interesting to find out that certain names like 'Jonah' really only appear in just 3 or 4 states. So go and find out just how faddish/creative your parents were when they came up with your name.
Elizabeth Warren: You're Only as Rich as Your Heart Is Warren first got national exposure for her speech on how the rich need to give their fair share back and help the 99%. You know evil rich 1%ers like Scott Brown!!! - oh wait... Last Friday, she released four years of tax returns. Over those four years, Warren and her husband, another Harvard Law prof, averaged $300,000 more than Sen. Brown and his spouse, a TV anchor. In 2009, the Warrens made $981,000 vs. the Browns' $249,000. It must be some kind of advanced Cherokee spiritual technique that lets her heart commune with the common folk despite pulling in almost a $1 million a year. I saw this over at Patterico's almost a year ago and kept meaning to do something with it but never got around to it. So now I'm throwing it into your eager paws - go forth and create something that would make Breitbart proud and Lucas sad. I also think it's interesting to compare and contrast Obama with Romney at approximately the same age. They were almost opposites. Obama was still searching for a father and an identity; Romney had an unusually strong dose of both. Obama was drifting; Romney was a family man who already was married with children and focused on his future (Romney married at 22 and became a father at 23). Obama smoked and drank, and more; Romney was a teetotaler and non-smoker. And yet they both were the products of similar educations: private prep schools and Harvard Law (and in Romney's case, Harvard Business as well). Soy Harvest Collapse = Interesting Times Ahead This year's soybean harvest in Latin America has been severely hurt by La Niña caused droughts. And given how much of the world's population relies on soybeans for food and animal feed, that means hunger and possible famines around the globe. The US Department of Agriculture believes that soybean production is headed for its biggest global drop ever - or at least since 1965 which is when the US started tracking global soybean production. Prices are now higher than they have been in four years, and could reach record levels later in the year. As we saw in Egypt hungry unhappy people topple governments. This is an essay by Danish psychologist Nicolai Sennels who found after studying Muslim and non-Muslim youths at a Copenhagen youth prison that there are some big differences in psychology and world view. Now much of this may not be surprising but it is interesting to see it all laid out by psychologist with first-hand knowledge of both populations. A third psychological difference concerns the so-called "locus of control". Locus of control is a psychological term that describes whether people experience their lives as controlled mainly by inner or by outer factors. In Western societies we are told that we ourselves are the main ones responsible for our lives. The way we think, speak and act - our way of handling our emotions, our views, ways of communication, our reactions, etc. - determines whether we manage to create a life with a majority of happy and satisfying moments or not. Asking a Muslim to take a look at his own inner and outer reactions in order to find the reasons for his problems is simply not a relevant question for them. Muslim clients mainly see the sources for their suffering as outer factors: An unfair society and non-Islamic authorities are the general scapegoats. ...The same was almost always the case concerning the crimes they had been charged with: It was the victim's own fault - he or she had "provoked" or tempted them beyond their means. My Muslim clients thus felt "forced" to attack the victim by the victim him or herself, or by outer religious or cultural pressure and expectations. Culture matters. And Islam brings its own culture along with its beliefs. I was taught this technique in school, but I never fully grasped it until I watched this video. As we've shown before, it's actually a very simple technique of wrapping one way and then alternating. It's something you really have to see to grasp. Putting it into words would just make it confusing. But what this video offers beyond our original is a faster, second alternating method. Well Iowahawk hasn't done one of these in a while so I'll try to fill in as best as I can with a new batch of hawt lonely babes who just happen to be in the custody of prison authorities. No doubt due to bad luck and a series of misunderstandings and/or parole violation. Renee and Maeghan's profiles feature on meet-an-inmate.com, where you can browse the profiles of hundreds of women (and men) all yearning to hear from you. The website does include a disclaimer, but adds: "Even though these men and women are in prison, it doesn't mean that they are bad individuals. The majority of these inmates are fun, loving, clever, reliable, sexy and very passionate. And really - what are the odds that they would ever be involved in another accidental boyfriend stabbing. And in the worst case doesn't going out in a lover's quarrel beat dying alone any day? Yahoo group. That is all. And my Twitter spew. This is an essay by Danish psychologist Nicolai Sennels who found after
studying Muslim and non-Muslim youths at a Copenhagen youth prison that there are some big differences in psychology and world view. What a surprise. The muzzie scum have to kiss the ground 5 times a day to prove to themselves that they are worthless, insignificant pieces of shit and, loa dn behold, they have different (twisted and demented) personalities. Who would have thunk it? After all, people who like the idea of honor killing - daddy muzz goes and strangles his young daughter to death because the "wrong boy" looked at her, and then sits down for a nice meal with what's left of the family ... and everything is just peachy. Who could imagine that people raised in such an insane and pathetic culture would be different than civilized Westerners? Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 03, 2012 10:58 PM (X3lox) 94

Individualism/Guilt/Atonement versus Tribalism/Shame/Revenge That tells people pretty much everything they need to know about muzzies and how they will ract to things, and it ain't one bit like Westerners would (which is why empathy doesn't work, at all, when Westerners apply it to muzzies). "Somehow it seems wasteful to bother with the
"psychology" of Muslims. Posted by: tcn at May 04, 2012 12:13 AM (WhSRj)" I disagree. If I remember my Religion 101 correctly, Muslims don't believe in free will. You can't take a piss unless God actively makes the pee come out. It's why Muslims qualify statements like "I will do this" with "God willing." IMO this difference in worldview causes them to make ineffective symbolic attacks on us, while we make equally ineffective strategic attacks on them. It would be funny if it weren't so sad. We live in a nice neighborhood in Silicon Valley, in a house built in 1955. Two doors down, there's a semi-retired long-time lawyer who may have been an original owner. He's been a part of this valley since it was prune orchards, and knows everyone there is to know and all the skeletons in all the closets. Sometimes, about this hour of night, there is a burning smell in the air. Makes me nervous, having grown up in an area prone to brushfires, but we've been here for 15 years now and know that it's not a direct threat. It seems to be coming from the lawyer's house.
Years ago, my BH and I came up with "the story" for this. We figure that the old guy reads the obituaries every day, then opens his safe and takes out the "blackmail files" he's kept for decades. He goes through them one last time, with the newspaper clippings and the photographs, the written statements and police reports.....and when he's about to turn in for the night, he burns them.......and two doors down, my ultra-sensitive schnozz goes, "darnit!!" Not everyone in prison is a horrible person, some are there for stupid reasons (I thought I'd sell this bag of weed) and a very small tiny portion are not actually guilty of what they were jailed for. But almost without exception they have some shared characteristic: a near-total rejection of authority and a massive sense of being owed everything they desire. And that adds up to a pretty horrible girlfriend.

It won't work. My father died in 1977 and he was getting spam for a while in the 90s. It was this bizarre scheme where, if he were still alive, I was to be mislead into believing he'd ripped me off somehow from an inheritance and the spammer could fix everything for me if I just paid his fee. In advance. I tracked it to a Russian ISP notorious for hosting such things. If it came from anywhere on this continent it would have been road trip time. I was named after my maternal grandmother, so no surprise that my name's heyday occurred long, long before my arrival. I'm just lucky hers was a name that works in the English-speaking world. I understand that my father wanted to name my much-older brother (had he been born a girl) "Brankica". And that "c" = "ts" in pronunciation, making it even more pulmonary disease-sounding than it appears at first glance. I suppose a Brankica would be forcibly renamed under ObamaCare, though, and be "cured" into becoming a Julia.
What creepily condescending claptrap that Julia fable is! With an overlay of Gallant and Goofus compositional structure to render it more insipid. But I am reminded of my husband's ex mother-in-law who once declared "I want to be married to a rich man so I can be independent." Too many people are out there who are similarly unaware of the contradictions in their aspiration. I must be considered a weirdo by them to think that the single most selfish and self-interested thing I could vote for is a strong and stable country. But what do a few trinkets matter when your life and world's in the shitcan? Posted by: sistrum at May 04, 2012 01:32 AM (AyryN) 540

I am not sure I get the whole kate upton cat daddy dance thing. she is good looking and is wearing a skimpy bikini, but she cannot dance. for most of the dance she is doing some funky move that resembles carrying a beer keg covered in crisco. She also is does not have enough common sense to know she should not go over to some guys house and let him video her dancing in a bikini and put it on the internets. I know of no women named "Donna" who were born after 1964. I was supposed to be named after my paternalCzech grandma Anastacia. My mother found out (while in labor - no ultrasounds in those days) that she was going to have twins. That gave her an excuse to ditch Anastacia and go for "Donna" and "Diane" - 'cause twins had to have "matching" names in those days and mom just couldn't think of an "A" name to match Anastacia. (In truth, mom hated the name Anastacia, in part because she didn't get along with her mother-in-law, who was a very Old World type and in part because Anastacisa was just not a cool name in the early 60's.Mom was trying to escape the Old Country past, not reinforce it. She wanted to be a modern American.) So I became Donna - and I hate the name. Anastacia sounds like a grand name to me. But I understand my mom's reasoning.
Since I came of age in the early '80's, I'm sure if I had been Anastacia I would have ended up as either an "Ann" or a "Stacy." Posted by: Donna V. at May 04, 2012 02:06 AM (/x5cx) 580

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 04, 2012 01:55 AM (X3lox) I've heard the paucity of naturalness is really messing up with the production of the "Magic City" series. In their thoroughness in trying to portray late 50s Miami, the producers insist that noone shown on screen has plastic surgery, and that they need to be appropriately proportioned -- i.e. with some meat on their bones. They have to troll the streets trying to find enough for extras and such. They were hoping to rely on burlesque shows somewhat for the body pool but the women were too tatted up for the most part to make it worth their while in coverup and retouching. Lots of bikinis being worn, and just as many merkins needed. Posted by: sistrum at May 04, 2012 02:11 AM (AyryN) 585

"The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley
Speaking of doing things differently there...even though I don't like beer (please do not despise me, only rejoice that there is more left for you) I'm sipping a Dogfish Head "Midas Touch". The living history part of me had to sample something whose recipe claims to be based on residue found in 2,700-year-old drinking vessels. It says it's made with barley, honey, white muscat garpes saffron. So I ask the true drinkers out there -- is my ability to moderately enjoy the stuff a tribute to the brew or confirmation of my wretched taste? Posted by: sistrum at May 04, 2012 02:29 AM (AyryN) 592

Posted by: the new, improved arhooley -- now with 10% more cynicism! at May 04, 2012 03:01 AM (7I4GE) Eh. Reminds me of one of the rules I have in my book "Computer Consulting for Elder Gods": "Never let accountants choose your accounting package." See, the thing is, your accounting department will make anything work. Their leaders have CPAs, meaning that they've been in public accounting, where you go out to a different client every other week and extract info from whatever POS legacy system they have -- and two weeks later, it's another one. They'll deal. But if your Sales team isn't involved, then Every Little Thing about the system is a total travesty that you'll hear about six times a day, and they won't stop bellyaching until the accounting department allocates a full-time headcount to wiping each Salesman's ass each time after they're done -- and re-entering all their data. Same with Purchasing, Payroll, and Production. So let them pick it. Then you can easily garner IT resources because "those Sales guys didn't choose a good accounting system." Arhooley could probably do a beautiful, effective job with WordStar, and it would cost an additional 1/10 of 1% of effort to deal with it. Compared to the raw talent involved, the choice of tools is almost irrelevant. Embarrassing, but not really in scope. Posted by: cthulhu at May 04, 2012 03:14 AM (kaalw) 609

I want to feel Indian Outrage tomorrow. She USED YOUR HISTORY, AND YOUR PAIN to get a $million job at Harvard. How many families would her salary alone comfortably support? 30? yep. It would please me greatly to see her run off the prog/lib reservation. In 2003, the SCOTUS noted that affirmative action policies might well be obsolete "25 years from now" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grutter_v._Bollinger] -- it would be a great healing for this country if Warren's case shortened that time to 10 years. There could be no better milestone than to say that Warren's abuse of affirmative action was the proof that it had become a meaningless game and violated due process. The Catholic idea of Lent ... to deliberately deny ourselves certain pleasures ... is to remind ourselves that we are in control of the happiness of our lives ... not the adornment of external ...
There are people all over the world who have wonderfully happy lives without eating lots of chocolate... I could be one of them ... I could just as easily choose to interpret 'Life is Pain' as an admonishment to give up writing entirely ... I am not employed as a writer. I would like to write for the vainest of reasons ... to leave something behind when I die ... I existed once and I had thoughts. No one gives a shit, nor should they, as in an ideal world, everyone would be capable of thinking their own thoughts. So how much effort is worth the pleasure of screaming at the scifi channel "I can write better dreck than that AND here it is!!!" compared to the effort of bring peace to Sudan, smuggling guns to Christians - many of whom wouldn't use them anyway, providing people with clean drinking water, et cetera? Durnit! The Farscape finale was. The. SHIT! Loved it. Loved it loved it loved it! That was the perfect endcap to this truly wonderful sci-fantasy series. FanTASTIC! But I just missed Adriane so I can't nerd out with her over the sheer awesomeness of it all. But honestly I can't recommend this series enough. Not nearly enough. It's usually pretty cheap on Amazon. Between $50 to $60 bucks for the complete series box set on standard DVD. Blu-ray seems to be about $20 to $30 bucks more than that. Add in the finale, The Peacekeeper Wars, for another $10 bucks but only on standard DVD. Highest possible recommendation. Great characters, great stories, great series. And for a brief bit of horror...
http://tinyurl.com/75u2wag Headline: EU PLot To Scrap Britain. It's a little over the top. Britain wouldn't be scrapped but the EU would expand entirely at the expense of its constuent parts. A unified executive branch would go a long ways towards that goal. After reading a couple of comments, some people don't seem to understand Britain would be relegated to a mere "administrative unit" of a larger European super-state. It's the same as losing their independence. Yeah, there might be a Province of Britain but it would exist at the pleasure of more powerful forces. And the way good old socialist Europe operates the smaller units of government and society, the province, the county, the city, even the individual, exist at the blessings of the central government and corrupt aristocratic elite. If Britain is subsumed into a unified Europe it will never, NEVER, be recovered. Britain needs to get the hell out of the EU and fast. Posted by: Robert at May 04, 2012 06:05 AM (F79HU) 626
