Now I've had a few things fall of my aircraft before but nothing like this. The Day A Nuclear Bomb Fell On South Carolina. Lucky, lucky family.

That afternoon sisters Helen and Frances Gregg, aged six and nine, and their nine-year-old cousin Ella Davies were in the playhouse their father had built for them in the woods behind their house in Mars Bluff, South Carolina.

At around four o’clock they decided to move from the playhouse to the side yard 200 yards away. It was a decision that kept them from becoming the first Americans killed by a nuclear weapon released on U.S. territory.

Minutes later the woods behind the playhouse were destroyed by a nuclear bomb.

The high-explosive trigger in the bomb blew up on contact with the ground, leaving a crater 50 feet across and 35 feet deep.

Luckily, the nuclear core had been stored elsewhere on the plane. Of course they sued the Air Force and received a whopping $54K.

I haven't. I started driving back in 81, the cars couldn't go that fast back then. Either the engines were too weak, or if it had an engine capable, the car itself shook all its parts off.

Posted by: MrCaniac at April 28, 2012 10:22 PM (1grxW)

55 I think the Accord would do 111, irongrampa. They don't accelerate much, but those little engines rev to the ceiling. If the gears are right, should hit near 120, I'd think. We had a '96 Subaru Legacy that'd make nearly 130 after the electronics were "arranged" to delimit the top end. By the way, almost anywhere in rural west Texas is a pretty good speed check area. Nice roads and a paucity of law enforcement.

Still don't pay a lot of mind to speed limits on the Northway, all you gotta do is pace traffic and you are fine.

Cops will spot you ten at least, what they really look for is the boy racers who dart in and out. The last thing they want is a traffic interruption because that's where the trouble starts.

Did someone brake hard?

Posted by: weft cut-loop at April 28, 2012 10:58 PM (ebPtk)

187 That fuel economy article is typical TV science. Take things that are generally true, and state them as if absolutely true.

Some spoilers (not many) are designed to break up laminar flow at the back of the vehicle, that can actually help fuel economy. Some are there to correct a high-speed instability on FWD vehicles with no weight in the back.

The window vs ac thing depends on the weather and the vehicle. Acceleration kind of depends on the vehicle (the engine), though driving like a maniac always uses more fuel (and is more fun), sometimes the slowest pace is not the most efficient, and it always screws up traffic (I'm looking at you, Sentra driver who barely makes 15mph between blocks).

The louder of any two mufflers is not always the more efficient, and you can break up laminar flow without punching divots in your car - and that depends on the cd of the car in the first place. And you can't tell that by looks, the Audi 5000 had a low cd and looked like a brick.

Newer cars will see less improvement (usually) in aerodynamics because guess what? Car companies can figure that stuff out, too.

Then I'll be pedantic. Nothing you said contradicted what I said in any way. I wasn't talking about their car (which I'm familiar with), I was pointing out that different cars have different aerodynamic properties and will respond differently to dinking around with the shape. You may have huge results on an old square Chevy II or Dodge Dart, not much on a modern car.

As usual on Mythbusters, they tested one sample with one variable and declared a general conclusion. They have set science back like Obama has set race relations back.

232 Driving too fast? About the stupidest thing I ever did was put the pedal to the floor when I was in HS to mess with a friend in the back seat.

We had a brand new late 80s car with a digital dash that showed MPH prominently...and could, with the push of a button...switch to KmPH. So I'm out in the desert and get onto the highway and hit the gas. And push the button to switch to KmPH. Zoom right past 150 and push past 180 before I start getting scared and ease off. When I hit the button to return the dash to miles per hour it says 129. Stupid I was. Kids, don't ever do that.

My buddy in back thinks we were doing 180mph and freaked teh hell out. Funny now. To me, anyways, since I didn't kill myself and everyone involved.

I don't know - I've never read the Hellraiser comics/novels, I've only watched the movies. Their conclusion that a snapped cable cannot bisect a person was complete horseshit. I'm not a scientist but knew that by releasing the cable in such a way that the pig carcass was struck mid-cable meant the energy was diverted to the end of the cable.

I *want* to like the show, I really do, but they could at least hire a fact-checker to get the freaking basic terminology or numbers right. The errors are like fingernails on a freaking chalkboard.

I was OK with this approach when all they were trying to show as "is this possible." An N of 1 success would at least tell you it's possible (even if not probable.
Take their "Sewer lid blow out" experiment. In remarkably idealized circumstances they managed to blow one high into the air. It may not be probable, but at least that shows it can happen.
It's when they get into the psuedo-science that I start to go a little nuts. They should stick to the "is it possible" stuff.

The Nation of Islam teaches, and I am not making this up, that all white people are a sub-human race of demonic creatures created by an evil black scientist names Yakub 6,000 years ago in order to enslave the good and noble black man.

It's insane that any politician, or anyone at all, would lend support to someone like Farrakhan.

Malcolm X taught and believed the same things.

276 I don't know about cables severing people, but my parents had a tenant who was a longshoreman. Linehandler, actually. While mooring a vessel the manila cable snapped and cut both feet off. They reattached both. But one, and then the other, failed to adhere, for want of a better word. Only person I know to have lost 4 feet in one month.

Several times their experiments have completely failed and they've labled them "plausable." It was stated in the "Jet Engine knocking car off the road" test that they do some (likely limited) news story searches that effect their outcomes. (In this case, the experiment failed, but they had a new story complete with video footage that showed that such a thing has happened.)

Yep, and they never even attempted to strike the carcass with the end of the cable.

I think they totally misunderstood the principle at work there. They were assuming yould get a wrap around which would slice the body (like slicinga log of cheese with a wire cutter.) Except cable is much thicker and so the entire process is different.
FWIW, if I had to guess on chains, I'd say it has to do with flexability and energy transfer (same reason whips can do more damage than big inflexable rope, there's less energy lost to internal movement.)

On the politic subject....does anyone rember their first foray into it? Mine was 8 yrs old at the breakfast table when my little sister asked dad the difference between democrats and republicans. My dad said and I quote because I remeber " Democrats like to spend money and Republicans like to save it" To which my sister said "huh...I must be a democrat" She was 7.

It took my until I was in my 20's to understand how it all worked but I will always think of my dad when I try to boil it all down

But, when they started before they were totally famous douchebag tools, they seemed more honest in their experiments. Though aren't their backgrounds special effects anyway, so hasn't it always been more about making things go boom for fun?

They had a "student special" with some *really* lame lamp-and-plastic test to "prove" AGW, plus a bonus "question nobody ever asked" about pushing electric cars.

People believe everything they see on TV. It sucks, but they freakin' do.

So they think they know all these things, but they have no idea how much of it is just plain wrong.

Oh BTW, I can't think of any of their screw-ups that would actually make the show less entertaining to kids or people who don't care - if they don't give a shit about the details, how does it help them that they details are wrong?

Nobody is *more* entertained because someone on TV can't properly average a short series of numbers, or gets the formula for the area of a circle wrong, or thinks a .45 ACP is more powerful than a .44 Magnum.

Those who are paying attention just think everyone on the show is an idiot.

It's not even really because they're stupid, they run a business, they're not *really* idiots. They just don't care what the facts are, and the entire purpose of their show is null and void because of it.

I see it as a "half-assed science displaces the real science" sort of thing. Kids are taught they know "Science!" using incomplete (and thus illogical) methods, and learn to trust things because their teachers and "Scientists!" say so.

Thus completely subverting the point of the scientific method - verifiability and repeatability. (kids who don't understand science are not in a position to verify or repeat experiments)

At some level, you can't really teach critical thinking, but at the same time, indoctrinating kids with what amounts to propaganda doesn't really train critical thinkers, either.

492 OT, but I went to a local seminar about Agenda 21 and property rights and the Tea Party, of which I am on the local group's steering committee, and long story, short, ran into a fully fledged Paulbot. Wow, what an experience.
These folks are out there. Here we were, about 60 or so supposed conservatives, and this one guy stops me on the way out and sandbags me on 9/11 and all the usual conspiracy theories. I then tell him about the perimeter construction of the Towers, the pairing of unlike metals: stainless and carbon steels (galvanic reaction) and there being no such thing as "nano-thermite charges". This dude was not getting it: you can't get more energy out of a chemical compound than there is potential energy in its mass. You can't get two pounds out of one pound of a given substance unless you separate the constituent atomic elements (fission) or force two separate atomic elements together (fusion). This cat seriously believes in micro charges of a miniscule amount of a chemical like Thermite and that the 13000 to 14000 people who worked in those towers everyday overlooked the gubmint assassins painting the walls and every last nook and cranny with dull gray thermite coating.

Heretofore I have always laughed off the Paulbot jokes, the Luap Nor jokes, the Ronbot comments...now I have seen these mouth breathing kooks in the flesh, and they are as thoroughly goofed up as the most dedicated leftist, just for a different cause. But no less wacked out than the leftists they make comments about.

This cat got nothing out of our speaker, Michael Coffman, PhD, except that the speaker wasn't parroting Luap Nor's propaganda as fact. They seem to get some of it right, and the rest of it is conspiracy theory and conjecture. And when you confront them with flow mechanics, modern day triangular boxed construction techniques, steel melting points versus failure points, basic physics and factual reasons why things just aren't as mysterious as the conspiracy theory folks like to portray, they freak out and get insulted.

Moral here, for me; the Paulbots are willingly ignorant. They are counter-productive, and they are impossible to reaon about wiht issues they have been indoctrinated about. Paul has been in Congress for decades. He has led the fight against the Fed and garnered earmarks for his state and district. And done precious little else. Rand Paul has done more with his name and position in four years than his dad has in ten times as long.

And that is my final point: Paul is as much an insider, after 40 years or so, as anybody. Dirty hands are dirty hands.

Am I wrong here? If so, how? What am I missing that the Paulbots are laying down?

Help a frustrated Moron out here...

533 For full disclosure -- I was a registered
Libertarian from 1980-2010, changing to Republican to try to help stop
the Obamanation. I've always been a more philosophical-type (as in,
"this country went totally off the f'in' rails starting with Wickard")
and it has pained me that the party has not espoused a consistent
worldview (or consistent planet). During that time, I voted for RP a
couple of times because he was my party's nominee, but it's been like
voting for a particular banana as your favorite fruit at the
supermarket......after a while, it's not as nice of a banana.

Yep -- but there is a corollary that needs to be considered -- as Breitbart would say at this juncture: "So?" And that's where things diverge. If Paulbots believe that purple-winged green frogs fly out of people's asses when they have Federal Reserve death rays beamed into them from the invisible force projectors that remain in the spaces formerly occupied by the twin towers........and that leads them to feel that government should butt out of people's lives -- I can deal with that. The Obots think that every problem -- "I have a hangnail" (or with Fluke, "I need to get laid") -- requires the government to expand and squeeze out individual liberty while gaming economies and spending money borrowed in the name of generations yet unborn....and I have a problem with that.
So even if a Paulbot is a kook, I might likely feel more kinship and willingness to go along with him just for giggles -- as opposed to the Obot crowd, where I'd feel like doing whatever possible to thwart initiatives I might otherwise support, just to suck up resources and divert the Obot crowd from doing further harm to the nation.

Sikozu is the evil little redheaded bitch from season four, as opposed to the obnoxious redheaded twerp Jool from season three.
As for blu, ya gotta be a little careful about that. With older movies and TV shows made prior to the advent of digital filmmaking, you want to be sure they've done a proper restoration and upconversion. Sometimes they just take what's available, slap it on a blu disc format and sell it to suckers at a premium.

Some otherwise decent people end up in a cycle of shunning and anger and get drawn into radical, conspiracy-theory crap that only ever helps the Long Marchers and the leash-holders of the leftist pols and bureaucrats.

The money situation is still a very possible fix at this point but having your wife and kids pulled out of your car and hand jobbed isn't.
Now the thieving by "Authorities" is increasing faster than any other property crime. People just wanting to get their handful too.
Judges just making shit up is a giant nation killer. When people can't operate by a set of rules it destroys confidence in the system and people instinctively hunker down and detach.
Ask the bond holders for GM and Chrysler or the hundreds of dealerships that had their property seized by Obama's order. no law. just taken and nobody doing anything about it.

But expecting to get the straight poop from a cat who's been in DC since the Nixon Administration is just delusional. Four decades in DC and you're part of the soup. The cat gets huge earmarks while denouncing same. Hires his DIL and blood relatives while decrying the Bush and Kennedy/Boozehound Dynsasty for making politics a career goal.

The TV series got into alternate universes and time distortions and all kinds of wild stuff.

The comics storylines were all created by the creator of the show, Rockne O'Bannon. They are the stories that would have appeared on TV if they had more seasons. The script would have been executed by different people but they're part of the series as a whole. The guy doing most of the final scripting has a LOT of media adaptation experience and usually does a good job of finding the voice of the original. So yeah, if you ignore them you'll get some complaints in the feedback.

I can point you to torrents that have the whole load. You can then judge for yourself if they're worth buying. The set I have is 1.1 GB but some of the files are a fair bit bigger than they need to be. Some scanners optimize better than others but one there is only one version floating around you're stuck with it.

Take the USDA method for grading meat, for example -- you pick two teams, USDA1 and USDA2 out of the current structure. You tell 'em that 12 months from now, they'll be entirely self-supporting from fees paid by firms in the meat business and that consumers will receive a tax break for the amount previously spent.

Then it starts to get fun. Tell 'em the reason there are two of them is that they will compete. One can be friendlier to the industry, one can be more aloof; one can be cheaper, the other can be thorough; one can be focused on the farm, the other can focus on the slaughterhouse -- but that each group will clearly label which meat they dealt with, will publish their standards, and will have unlimited liability for not meeting the standards they set. Oh, and if one goes out of business, the government may step in to form a new one......but anyone in the failed one will be ineligible to be hired. And the free market may create one or more competitors as well -- in fact, that'd be great.

If USDA1 allows some people to be poisoned, people run away from it, and markets are left with Kosher, Halal, or USDA2 certification.....there you go. Each one will do better to avoid the fate of USDA1. If some farmer decides to make his own standards and puts USDA2 out of business.....ok. The whole idea that "it's good when the high priests of the Feds have said so" has been so debased as to be laughable -- but the structure of the government still pretends that it's viable.

It all comes down to the writing. The guy doing Fantastic Four and the spin-off FF (Future Foundation), Jonathan Hickman, has been doing some very fun stuff. Franklin recently came into contact with his far future self. Who is a close friend of Galactus and promised to be there with him when the Universe ends, again.

"Can I tell you a secret?"
"Sure."
"I never told anyone this, but I've always wanted my own Galactus."
"...I know."

Meanwhile, his uber-genius little sister Valeria (see Wikipedia if you're scratching your head at this point) doesn't like her far future self, mainly because she is as smart with more experience and Val has gotten very used to being the smartest in the room.

I wouldn't be surprised if our farming subsidies were bigger than *our* farming industry -- and they're a complete crock because they are taking resources at the local level that would be instantly redeployed in reaction to local conditions, sending them to Washington, allocating them by political concerns, and distributing them months later.

625 Yeah, the very moment I heard it suggested Seth Rogen would be the lead in a serious Green Hornet movie I knew I'd be rushing to not see it on opening day.

Kevin Smith had some fun doing a comics revival around a second generation Green Hornet, being trained by an elderly Kato to take up the job alongside Kato's daughter, who thinks she should be the Green Hornet and forget this bozo. There was a storyline where the character is trying different costume to seek a comfortable superhero persona. He ultimately settle for an update of his father's outfit.

I gave up downloading it a while back, though. It says a lot when you cannot be bothered with something free. But then, the character doesn't mean much too me. I knew about the old radio show and I knew there had been a TV show from the producers of Batman but the episodes of Batman that served as the launch point were the only evidence of it I ever came across as a kid.

TV was like that back then. You'd see all kinds of interesting titles listed on some UHF station that would never come in. I think it was around twenty years before I finally any episodes of Time Tunnel, from the time I first saw a listing for it. Nowadays, it would be just a search away.

630 And, BTW......airline security used to be run by the airlines. And, frankly, it was usually a waste of money because people were generally well-behaved. But when a plane blew up, people sued the airlines and won huge settlements.

Then came 9/11, when four planes -- two United and two American Airlines -- were used in a terrorist attack. We got the TSA in order to shield individual airlines from liability for such attacks by Federalizing the responsibility for airplane security.

And, initially, that doesn't sound so bad -- would it be "fair" if UA and AA were out of business because they hadn't foreseen such an unprecedented event? But, as Bastiat noted, it's not what you see.....it's the "might-have-beens" you never see. Just imagine security today if it were still the responsibility of an airline -- would you have any of the abuses we have continually seen? Groped 4-year-olds and grannies, naked scanners that are worse than a dozen medical x-rays, rude and incompetent staff? No, because any airline that tried that crap would have empty planes.

But would you have more terror incidents? Well, in this alternate universe, UA and AA allowed 'em.....and they're not around, their CEO's aren't getting bonuses, and their pilots' pensions are gone.......so I'd be guessing "no" -- the airlines would be doing a really good job at clamping down.

So we'd likely be safer and have a better customer experience without the Feds and the TSA -- and while our airfares might be a touch higher, our taxes could be a bit lower. What's not to like?

From a fannish perspective, the question is not whether they'll screw it up but how badly. A X-men that entirely met fannish requirements.

The comics are a huge mess of retcons. The only characters who were originally WWII vets that still have that status are those who could have some special reason for their longevity. Nick Fury has the Infinity Formula, Captain America was on ice, the Original Human Torch was an android, Namor was a mutant hybrid, etc. But look how many times other characters have had to have their date of birth brought forward. Reed Richards and Ben Grimm originally met Nick Fury during WWII. Then it became Korea, then Vietnam, and so on. The Ultimate unierse version of the FF had Ben Grimm recently home from the Gulf when they get their powers.

Making movies that a non-fannish audience can follow means tossing out everything and starting from scratch. This means you get to pick and choose the best characters when you have a standing army like the X-men. You get to ignore disparity in ages of the comics characters. You get to make your own weird disparities due to casting choices. Why didn't they make the senior X-men older rather than have the odd May-December thing due to the casting of Famke Janssen? Get someone a bit older to play Cyclops and make it all less weird.

How about that First Class movie that featured characters that shouldn't even have been born yet in the days when Magneto and Professor X were still young men learning what they were? That one was all over the map. Hank McCoy went from being one of Xavier's first student to one of his contemporaries. Emma Frost should be far into middle-age by the time of the three modern movies but her brief appearance there is as a teen-ager.

I'm sure some people are going to be annoyed that the Avengers movie has no Antman and Wasp. But how to bring them in to this mix with no previous appearance without giving over a ridiculous amount of screentime to their origin? They have a hard enough time bringing in Hawkeye and his origin can be summed up as 'really good shot with a bow and arrow.'

The TSA is Federal. And, BTW, airports the world over have been designed with a "safe side" and "out side", in order that each airport can minimize the number of security points per terminal. If you had two airlines with gates at a single terminal, who would be responsible for security past the gate?

Note that total privatization solves that dilemma as well -- you could sue 'em both, so they're motivated to find something that works. Instead, we get the DMV on steroids, nationwide.

649 It's not so much the individual characters ... it is the flock of pigeons of the story.

X-3 had available to it all the pathos in the world with the Dark Phoenix storyline and then to end up with THAT?!?

I enjoyed James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in 1st Class. I thought they did a great job (with help, as all movies are group efforts) of defining their characters in isolation of, yet in continuity with, Stewart and McKellen ...

The problem with Kirby is that he had great ideas but was a terrible writer. He really needed someone like Stanley Lieber to make the stories readable. As awful those early 60s comics can seem today, look at some of Kirby's solo stuff and really cringe.

The idea that Stan Lee mercilessly exploited Kirby is one of those beloved memes that doesn't stand up to examination. But then, I was never a big Kirby fan. One of my least liked artists, along with Frank Springer, Erik Larson, and Rob Liefeld. The latter two were among the reasons I stopped buying comics in the early 90s.

653 In case anyone cares, the whole TPAKTOP thing is not supposed to be in capitals, it's supposed to be in Cyrillic -- and in Cyrillic (which does have capital letters) letters differ only in size if they're capital or lower-case. So it would be TPAKTOP in the same-sized letters as the rest of the text if Pixy would fix the font size widget on the blog.

It was one of the classic mistakes of film adaptations. Taking a storyline that took several years to build up and trying to squeeze it into a single movie. Even with the buildup of the previous two movies trying to do the Dark Phoenix story was a huge mistake. Much like the attempt to squeeze almost a decade of Venom story into one Spider-man movie. Or how the Green Lantern movie tried to do Parallax.

A lot of comics storyline should be left alone. They are too heavily tied to the medium. An individual issue of a series may be very brief but they can build up into complex monsters. Since the non-comics reader audience doesn't know those big storylines they should instead look harder for something that stands along better but remains a good usage of the characters.

The joke is that Gushka put Robert and I in a soviet-era heroic agricultural "heroes of the revolution" thing a while back while posing on a tractor. Now, in Russian, the word "tractor" looks like TPAKTOP [but smaller] because it's written in Cyrillic, an alphabet where r's look like P, s's look like C, and hard c's (that sound like k's) look like K. It would look exactly right if I typed TPAKTOP and used the formatting tools to make the letters the same size as lower-case letters in the rest of the text, but the formatting is gefocktet.

Oh him. I'm not sure if he was DC's answer to MODOK or vice versa. Giant brained guys were common in SF long before either, though. In the comics he was always perfectly coiffed, which was a bit curious since he couldn't reach most of his own head and didn't always have a slave handy.

It may have been a illusion projected for his vanity. But the movie chose to go a different route, which owed more to John Byrne's 80s version of Brainiac as he first manifested.

Alan Scott doesn't count as he wasn't recruited by the Guardians and was never under their authority. Although his daught was for a wild but went back to her own internal power source. Wild magic that had been cast out a zillion years ago was the cover story. They changed his superhero name to Sentinel a while back and thus far he nor Jade don't exist after the recent reboot of the DC universe.

Someone insisted I take some home made relish home. So as I clean my
refrigerator, should I throw it away now or leave it sit for 6 months
then throw it away? Hard first world descision.

734 It was home canned relish that someone gave them, so the trail of custody is suspect.

737 The nuclear core wasn't stored elsewhere on the plane. The nuclear 'trigger' was. Slim Pickens would crawl down into the bomb bay and arm the bomb before it was dropped.
If that was a real nuke it would have left detectable traces.

739 737 It was Mk6 which was an implosion bomb made in the eight to sixty kiloton range. The came assembled fully functional. They were designed for Air Burst.
It was a hot bomb and actually went off with a lower yield because of the impact with the ground.

-- more challenging, but..... changed letters for main title: pirati
caribscogo morya (smaller print: na strannikh beregakh)

pirati
caribscogo morya ( means pirates of the carribean sea.)
pirati= pirates, plural. "Пираты" tides which are strange
Caribscogo, pronopunced Caribsco-vo, as the g is sounded as a v in that ending, which is very common. Карибского моряMorya=моря= sea.na strannikh beregakh =На странных берегах=on strange tides or tides which are strange, or tides which are strange.the whole thing: "«Пираты Карибского моря: На странных берегах»"

I speak the stuff, military taught. Some Latin characters correspond, a lot don't. 26 letters in English, 33 for Cyrillic.
There ya go. I hate this stinking font.
