| Republicans Draft Contempt Finding Against Holder; Will File It Unless He Begins Complying In Next Several WeeksIn the LAT. Over the air at Fox, Megyn Kelley said the plan was to file it unless Holder begins complying with document requests. Republican House leaders have drafted a proposed contempt of Congress citation against Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. in which they charge that he and his Justice Department have repeatedly "obstructed and slowed" the Capitol Hill investigation into [Fast & Furious]. ... If adopted by the GOP-led House, the contempt resolution would be sent to the U.S. attorney's office in Washington or perhaps an independent counsel in an attempt to force the Justice Department to provide tens of thousands of internal documents to the committee. Okay, for those saying "Strongly worded letter" this is something more than that.
If you read the CBS Article about it (I posted it in the last thread), the issue is that there will be a full house vote on the motion to hold him in contempt and then it has to go through the courts to be enforced. So they couldn't go too fast (I agree they went a little slow, but I can concede that it's a judgment call), or the courts probably wouldn't uphold it. Once it goes through the courts, assuming it's upheld, then they can impeach if he still won't comply. And I think even Democrats would have a hard time swallowing the Attorney General ignoring court orders. Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) SMOD 2012 at April 27, 2012 02:02 PM (8y9MW) 59

Congress needs to put a new IG law together and have it on Mitt's desk the day of the inauguration.
The agency IG should not be executive branch employees - make them senior-level GAO employees with standing discretion for their agency (vs at the whim of the committee chairs.), then define a path of judicial standing for them. Provide an explicit authority for those justices to deputize existing state law enforcement with federal authority and jurisdiction for investigation and arrest. He's getting ready to head back to DC, and Mooch is taking another plane to FL for some event. The TV reporters are gushing over how the military "love" the couple. The fact that the GOP even dare to speak it [contempt of Congress] shows something. But its the first move. See how the MFM plays it. If they ignore, go the next step. If they cover ["for blatantly partisan purposes, the House GOP today . . ."], the indies might havea glance and catch the whiff of bullshit. Even if you can't get your own narrative to be dominant, undermining the opponent's narrative is worth something. Personally, I would throw his "coward" comment back at him. Every. Chance. I. Got.

Thought for the future: Legislate for an email/document management system that all federal employees must use (like the carnivore program) which gathers and auto-tags all emails and documents with keywords.
Then, Executive response to Congress is only 'we will' or 'we will not' comply with your request for documents - not 'we can't find all of your documents'. Would this reduce illegitimate foot dragging? Give access to any independent counsels that come up? Or, if the House finds them in contempt, they can unlock the documents themselves? I don't see that happening. Most people have no idea how pissed the rank and file are at the current administration. The VA is screwed up, espcially with GI Bill benefits getting paid out, which has them pissed, added to the fact that Shinseki was already hated by the troops. The talk of Tri-Care cuts also has them pissed off. Then you have the surreal cuts to the active force when Panetta is costing $32K to fly home every weekend. Also, the Reserve Components are pissed because they know that slashing the active force means the RC will have to deploy more often. And there are still a lot of people around that remember the "Peace Dividend" cuts that made it almost impossible to get basic supplies and repair parts. You'd be very surprised at how much attention even the lowliest private pays toevents, policiesand politics. Posted by: Country Singer at April 27, 2012 02:41 PM (L8r/r) 160

If they do this, Holder will not comply and this will end up in court (not criminal court). And the Obama administration will win because the Executive Branch has grown in power greatly pretty much over the course of American history, but particularly over the last 100 years. National security, executive privilege, etc. Like it or not, the law of the land is that the Executive Branch is much more powerful than the legislative. It's not even close. You can whine all you like about that being unconstitutional, but that is the law as interpreted by our judicial system. Oh, and by the way, conservative judges and justices have led that charge.

Not that I know of, but it'sup tothe state/local level to ensure that they get the absentee ballots out with enough time for them to be returned and counted. Just look for the Democrat-controlled local election commsions to see which ones will have excuses for why they couldn't do that. The military itself works very hard to ensure that the troops vote. There arealready voter assistance signs and notices up on the post where I work. One of the popular excuses is that it takes so long for the mail to reach/arrive fromthe troops. While there are instances where that is true, in this day and age it is not on the massively large scale that is claimed, and it damn sure isn't true for those personnel stationed in CONUS. When I was in Iraq it usuallytook 10-14 days to receive a piece of mail and the same for outgoing. Posted by: Country Singer at April 27, 2012 03:10 PM (L8r/r) 216

I'm thinking Holder is in a similar position to J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover knew the contents of everybody's closets, and no one dared touch him. (And no, I don't believe Hoover had a closet of his own. He was what he appeared to be: a driven, single-minded man completely consumed by his work and position. Supercops like Agent Jelly Bryce wouldn't have been so devoted to Director Hoover if there was the slightest intimation Hoover was anything else than what he was.)
Anyway, Holder helped engineer the tawdry Marc Rich pardon during the Clinton Administration, among other things. He knows who's who and what's what. He could defecate on the floor of the Captiol rotunda on live national television and no one in the Obama Administration would do or say anything about it. So yeah, Holder's getting away with Fast Furious, at least for now, and he'll keep getting away with it as long as a Democrat is in the Oval Office. Update: No there won't be a vote on contempt charges for Holder.
http://tinyurl.com/782mkte (Daily Caller link) Turns out the cynical among us were correct and weeping boner has not approved the proceedings. Read the link. I'm sooooo disgusted with Congress. F'm all with a rusty spike. Posted by: Bitter clinger and all that at April 27, 2012 03:26 PM (CP+yl) 220
214, Impeachment? Are you kidding? That's a joke. The mood of the country is not for impeachment. Obama is above water in both job approval and favorables. More people in this country like him and approve of the job he's doing than do not. The mood of arch-conservatives is in favor of impeachment. That's all.

219, LMAO. The right-wingers in Congress rattle their dog leashes and the leadership shoots them down. And the conservative blogosphere swallows the rumor hook, line and sinker. "We're going to get Holder now! He's going to jail! This is going to bring down Obama! Yay!" Yeah, not so much.

Posted by: Ranginess at April 27, 2012 03:28 PM (1d6WV) *** I posted a comment the other day from FireDogLake. The progs there are so disgusted by Obama's lack of attention to their causes, they're evenwishing for impeachment. Posted by: kallisto at April 27, 2012 03:39 PM (jm/9g) 223

Posted by: Ranginess at April 27, 2012 03:30 PM (1d6WV) I didn't realize liberals could be so cavalier about a scandal originating with the Obama DoJ that resulted in the violent, bloody deaths of hundreds of people. I ask you: if Holder is responsible, shouldn't he be removed? If Obama knew about it and covered it up, shouldn't he be impeached? No one was put up against a wall and shot during Watergate, yet you and yours were all excited about that. So high crimes and coverups are okay if it's your guys doing it, is that it? Hypocrite. Asshole. Posted by: troyriser at April 27, 2012 03:39 PM (vtiE6) 224

214, Impeachment? Are you kidding? That's a joke. Obviously, I'm not kidding. The Constitution says so. The mood of the country is not for impeachment. The mood of the country is changing ... see below. Obama is above water in both job approval and favorables. More people in this country like him and approve of the job he's doing than do not. No. The polls of the last 6 months show JEFs being approximately even, maybe slightly behind ... once the built-in "D" bias, both is people sampled (voters? D,R, or I?) and questiontype and phrasing (read various pervious threads here, at HA, MM and elsewhere)is factored out. The mood of arch-conservatives is in favor of impeachment. That's all. True. For the moment. ButObamaCare is reviled by all, and teh OccuTards are getting on everyone's last nerve, and Libya was ... illegal ... and along with the rest of JEF's ME policy, sub-performing, even for grade-schoolers. Then there are the various investments: Solyndra. The Porlukus, Cash for Clunkers, etc ... allfailed. Tell me again about Goldan-Sachs ... Unemployment is at a 50-year (??)high, as is the nuber (and percentage) of people on Food Stamps (an achievement ... ?)... ... andall these things, and more, areexclusively due to JEF's inability / obviously-wrong policies / incompetence ... Fast and Furious has a body count. The operation was illegal according to US law, and people are dead as a result ... and Holder and Co. are ... obstructing justice. This is an impeachable offense. Soon, everyone will be in favor of impeachment ... unless November gets here first. Posted by: Arbalest at April 27, 2012 04:00 PM (VR82T) 227
Well he's clearly in contempt of congress but... they can't do anything about it. They can stamp their feet and shout and howl but its not changing.

One republican said that the time to appropriate money for Holder's kingdom will be coming soon, and they can vote not to fund his kingdom.
