Chris Matthews: Isn't the Political Pundit Class Going to Rally To Stop People From Voting Out Our First Black President?

The actual question Matthews asked is, "Is there going to be a reluctance on the part of the voters, and the political community that talks politics, as we get into November, about dumping the first African President, the first African-American President? Is that going to be something that just ratchets people -- Waaait a minute here, this guy's gonna knock out the first guy that ever got aboard?"

Some people could ask this question neutrally, as in, simply, "Will this happen?" (Answer: It's already happening.)

Matthews asks it as in, "When are the people not on MSNBC going to be more overt in their support of Obama?"

Bernie Goldberg:

Liberals, many of them, not all of them, but many of them are obsessed with race. They see everything through a filter of race. So in 2008 there were articles that said, if Barack Obama loses, there is only one reason: racism in America. Now there's a suggestion if he's not reelected, it could be -- right -- because of racism in America.

While both statements are true, i.e. they are obsessed with race, and they are prejudiced, I think Goldberg is wrong. The reason they bring it up now is not because they care about race, it's because they want to win, and this is the only arrow in their quiver. Retaining power is their northstar.

I disagree as well with the notion that only a small fraction of people vote on race, for or against. When 98% of blacks support one candidate, they are voting on race.

Race is certainly a component there, but not only is it not the only one, its also not the determinative one. For example, Michael Dukakis and Al Gore each got 90% of the Black vote. Last I checked, neither one is particularly Black.

Roughly 85%+ of Blacks will pull the lever for ANY Democrat.
Obama got 96% of the Black vote, which is a significantly higher percentage.

I think being Black (or half-Black, whatever) helped Obama more with WHITE voters than with Black ones, frankly.

Obama has nothing to run on and no real help on the horizon. The job numbers are not going to get better. Gas prices are not going to get better. The debt mess is not going to get better. So Obama and his minions in the media have 2 choices 1) hope Romney really, really steps in it and runs a bad campaign (and his response to the dog story seems to indicate that Romney is not going to be a pushover) or 2) turn it into a campaign focused on some wedge issue. They tried war on women....did not work. Now they are trying race. It could also indicate that while Obama's support among blacks is still high, their enthusiam to get out and vote may be low.....so this is the warning shot to that community.

128 I wonder how liberals would take it if, rather than engaging with their ideas and policy suggestions, the right simply said, "That's just envy" or "You are just lazy and you advocate policies that help lazy people like yourself" or "You're just naive and don't understand how the world works". That's essentially what they do when they put every idea coming out of their opposition down to some psychological or personal character flaw, rather than it being the product of a particular worldview.

The ideas behind limited government were formed in England, well before white people's fate became intertwined with black people's fate in North America. I'm pretty sure that those ideas weren't initially based on racism, unless you want to argue that there was racism between the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans (of which there is some evidence) and that's why the ideas behind the theory of limited government were initially developed.

I know that the real reason is because liberals are a bunch of mindless idiots, of course, but, if I ever was so bored out of my skull that I wanted to get an answer to one question from them, it would be the question of why they can't actually engage their opponents ideas, and why they turn it into a personal attack, even though I doubt they could form even the beginnings of a coherent response.

In 1964 there was a poll asking people who they voted for in 1960. Something like 80 percent plus said they voted for JFK.
