Romney: I Don't Care About Obama's "Flowery Rhetoric," His Record Is Awful, And He's Always Looking For Scapegoats

Maybe I'm just drinking the Kool-Aid, but I think Romney is becoming a good candidate. Here, his responses are relentlessly disciplined -- this is the exact narrative he's crafted and practiced -- but he does not seem robotic in repeating it. He seems more or less natural.

And as far as natural -- look, he's engaging in a very atypical and unnatural thing. He's on TV all the time, running for President. So he's not going to come off as natural as I do when I scratch my butt and then pick my nose and then wince in disgust at my own sloven stupidity and cry out "Dear Lord, why have you made me thus?!?!"

That's natural. It's also not going to win over married women aged 30-45.

Although some of what I'm talking about, as far as his growing comfort as a candidate, is visible there, I thought he really seemed to turn a corner in his Diane hic Shhawyer interview.

Of course part of this is just a simple fact: People look relatively good when they're winning (or at least not losing). They're comfortable, confident, positive.

Witness Barack Obama, who looked and sounded okay (if you ignore the actual politics) because he was winning, and was treated as a New Messiah by the press corps.

Romney just came off a win -- a tough, grueling win, but a win nevertheless -- so he'd better seem like a Happy Warrior at this point.

We know Romney can look quite bad if you get under his skin, as Perry did, and as Bret Baier did in that interview that made DrewM. decide he just could not palate Romney. (And Romney did come across quite badly there.)

Still, it's good to note that Romney can look good, as long as the wind is at his back. Not much, but that is still something.

One thing I've suggested keeping an eye on -- can Obama actually perform under pressure? How will he hold it together if he's losing?

He doesn't seem like the kind of man with a lot of grit and self-discipline. He doesn't seem like a man who's been tested, and has learned from his testing.

From all we know he seems petulant and entitled and brittle as glass.

So if, a month from now, he's consistently behind by 6 points in media polls (meaning: More like 9 or 10), how is he going to look?

By the way -- Gallup polling doesn't suggest that that's an unreasonable hypothetical. (See top right -- Romney 48, Obama 43.)

We could see a vicious cycle for him -- the more he falls behind, the worse he performs, which causes him to fall behind still more.

Here's hoping, anyway.

Meanwhile, at a photo op for a NASCAR winner, Obama wants you to know that some on his staff are "big racing fans."

Part of the "charm" of BO and the attraction he has with women is he's good looking and has brains but also, he treats his wife as a friend and mentor and shows he has a good marriage. Or, at least that's what a lot of the women seeing him see. Romney, if he does the same thing with Ann will level the playing field. I think part of romney's problem with women stems from the fact that they know he's faithful and loyal as a dog to his wife. So, even though he's just as good looking and intelligent as BO, they know they haven't got a chance with him so they can't vote for him cause they have a crush on him, like they can for BO. If he could find a way to turn that around, he'd be golden but then again, he'd lose the old married lady crowd. It's tough.

Well according to recent history when he gets behind on an issue, he always gets snippy, condescending, and preachy, and the absolute worst for him, he has an unquenchable desire to appear publicly, often, to condescend, snipe, and preach at people who are in disagreement with him.

As historical polls show, if he has a lead, once he falls behind on an issue, he stays behind; if he starts out behind, he climbs well, but when he goes from gaining to losing ground he turns into a petulant child.

52 Ann Romney makes voting for Mitt more palatable to me. He does seem to be getting better in this process and notably, showing he and his team can go on the offense. Quoting Marcus Arelius, Republicans on the offensive reminds me of: "You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish... it was so fragile." Poof! That's how desperate I feel for the R's to go on the offense. But we are seeing fragments coming from the Romney camp. I hope it keeps up. Albiet, I wholeheartedly admit that it sickens me when Mitt keeps trotting out the "Obama is a nice guy, but...." crap. He. Is. Not. A. Nice. Guy.

'scientifically', there is no way to know for sure that women voted more 'right' than men from the 20s to the 50s. It's local polls and anecdotal evidence

86 I want to believe, but let's not forget that Barry's hit men have been researching Mitt for a year. I expect we will need a big lead before we find out that, dog gone it, Mitt is an underwear wearing cult member that robs widows and orphans.

"And here is widow Fawn Lebowitz. Your husband died in a kilt accident at the plant Bain company bought and failed to install safety equipment?"

Wait a fucking minute, Fawn, your the dead one.

We need to burn the boats and take no prisoner, they certainly are not going to.

Ace, this election was always supposed to be a referendum about Obama's record as president. That we're finally hearing attacks on Obama is the seemingly discordant note.

It's been a savage primary with nothing but blue -on-blue fire. Add to that, that the last presidential election was completely ball-less in that BOTH candidates agreed that Obama would be a good choice as president.

This is how it's SUPPOSED to be.What you're feeling now is what we all felt when Perry came out of the gate swinging at Obama. If Romney keeps banging away at Obama, we win this.

141 So which is better long bows or cross bows?
Posted by: long island at April 19, 2012 01:55 PM (kzp9t)

The main problem is that to be proficient and strong enough to make the longbow the really bitchin' weapon that it is (armor piercing, rapid fire, highly accurate) you have to train your men from basically birth.

Henry VIII's ship, the Mary Rose, sunk in the 16th cent, and they recovered it in 1970s, 80s. It was full of skeletons of men whose shoulder bones were fused together from a lifetime of pulling longbows.

You could train any last minute conscript in basic crossbow proficiency in a couple of days, even if they did take longer to re load and didn't shoot as far or fast. (today's crossbows are totally different, I think, I don't know anything about modern warfare).

hmmm... maybe I should post this on the mummy thread.

150 A Democratic member of Congress who has a history of calling for civility in politics promoted a filthy message of derision from one hate-filled Twitter user.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D., Minn.) took to the social networking website yesterday to pose a question: “ ‘… even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work’ Who said it?”

The heavily edited quote comes from Mitt Romney, who discussed the right of women with children to work at a January campaign event.

“I wanted to increase the work requirement,” Romney said at the event, according to MSNBC. “I said, for instance, that even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, ‘Well that’s heartless,’ and I said ‘No, no, I’m willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work. It’ll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.’ ”

In responding to Ellison’s question, one responder compared Romney to a feminine hygiene product: “A heartless douchebag who doesn’t like animals or small children. At least that’s what I’ve heard.”

Ellison, a vociferous proponent of civil discourse, subsequently promoted the message despite said calls for civil discourse.

Ellison, for instance, spoke at length about the need greater civility in politics during an event in February 2011. The congressman has also implored citizens from across the nation to sign a tolerance pledge.

He also counts himself as an ally of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, a Jewish advocacy group that has urged members of Congress and political commentators to sign a civility pledge—a document that sparked outrage from critics who claimed the organization was trying to stifle robust discussion.

UPDATE: Rep. Keith Ellison has distanced himself from a Twitter user who referred to Mitt Romney as a “douche bag.”

Ellison had promoted that comment as recently as this morning, but apparently in response a Free Beacon report on the matter, the congressman has deleted his association with the message.

Hey ellison, we know how you really feel.

161 We need to learn how to get in touch with people who can bring it to a larger audience.

Yes. Well, more specifically, they need to be better about responding when we do get in touch with them. Twitter, FB, whatever- when someone sends them an idea, they should acknowledge it: even if their acknowledgement is "we appreciate your effort, but we're not going to use this at this time."

The big problem is that communicating with them is like yelling down a hole- you don't know if there's anyone there, or if they're listening if they are.

The operative word here is "woman" - the females who vote for candidates like Obama are still little girls with "Daddy" issues, looking for someone who will kiss all of their problems away and make things better.

They don't know HOW Daddy makes things better; all they know is that the perfect Daddy would do what their Daddy never did. And they don't have to worry their pretty little heads about how the sausage gets made (SYWM).

Whereas....Romney's screw ups...."Nothing to get angry about"...."I can't have illegals working for me, I'm running for President"....."I enjoy firing people"....the Etch-a-Sketch candidate.

.....These are things we're going to be hearing about forever too, AllenG. And these things do not make Romney seem 'more human' or like a 'regular guy' that voters can relate to.

I laughed at the Perry joke and I was all in for Perry until he dropped out. I think Perry would have laughed at it, too.

On the other hand, the phrase "I told you xxxtruth about Romney I should have seen long agoxxxx" does not incline me nicely towards Romney supporters -- and they are beside the point. I don't believe anyone ever thought Romney wouldn't be a good candidate, or even that he will be a crappy president. I am concerned that he won't be a conservative enough president. Only time will tell on that regard.

Ehhh. I would say based on his record, he is good at the finance side of business. Understanding what part of what you are doing is making money and what parts aren't. Good when you need a turnaround of a dying business, not good for growing a business. Actually growing an enterprise requires someone with an eye for new things, not just getting rid of old things that don't work.

However, right now, getting rid of expensive socialist sh*t we can't afford is exactly what the US needs; In the near term at least. In the long term we have to grow in a different direction. I don't see Romney as being the President that can set that new conservative direction of growth.

That's the best I think we can expect of him, tearing down costly liberalism, not growing conservatism.

That said, Romney's problem is that he is NOT a natural as Palin is, so his delivery and presentation are going to get old. People are going to feel they are in the presence of their town funeral director after awhile.

291 ______________________________

Ace,

I just watched the entire Bret Baier / Mitt Romney interview again in its entirety. This was obviously not a great interview for Romney. However, my assessment now is the same as it was then:
Claims that Romney came off terribly in the interview are extremely overblown.

There is one brief exchange with Baier when Romney becomes particularly flustered, and that's when he's being taken to task regarding the Massachusetts Health Care Mandate. For many conservatives, Romney was seen as trying to double-talk his way around the mandate issue. I don't agree with that assessment at all, but I can appreciate how other conservatives have formed that opinion. But regardless of substantive disagreements, it is a stretch to say that Romney looked "bad" at even that lowest point in the interview. Again, a bit flustered is more accurate.

Remember that not only was RomneyCare a very touchy issue for conservatives (as it should have been) - but that everyone felt strongly that their candidate was the real conservative. - Not this damn Rhino-Romney with his God awful RomneyCare! Way back then, Santorum was my guy. - But I was okay with Romney even then.

So when Romney bobbles the ball a bit on the key argument against him: anti-Romney sentiment combined with the intense scrutiny that accompanies any frontrunner induced the perception of a major fumble.

But think about. Were any of his GOP rivals able to take a soundbite from that interview and spin it into a TV spot? No, they weren't. And yet if Romney had come off genuinely badly in that interview, they certainly would have.

It was simply a period of hyper-sensitivity among conservatives when Romney was (quite appropriately) under the microscope.

292 Why again is Romney such a weak nominee?

I mean, I get that he's more moderate than my ideal, but just finding someone that could actually get obama out of the White House is such an incredible victory in of itself for Conservatism.

Posted by: JackHandy at April 19, 2012 04:33 PM (0kf1G)

293 Remember when conservatives took people to task, just four years ago,for swooning over a candidate's rhetoric, concludingthathe wasfurther to the right thanhis actualrecord suggested? Now, instead of moderates convincing themselves that the stealth radical is one of their own, we have conservatives convincing themselves that the managerial progressive is one of their own. I hope they're right but I have no real reason to jump on the bandwagon.

294 I am a little concerned about October surprises and other mayhem the O campaign is going to throw at us, not to mention election fraud.

But I hope the righty PACs and Romney have some surprises too. My secret wish is that someone gets ahold of O's transcripts or other suppressed documents that reveal him to be a liar or way out of the American mainstream. And if our side doesn't have anything like that, I really wish someone would fake a set of transcripts and release them. Let Barky have to deny their accuracy and explain why he doesn't just release his records to clear up the matter.

Hey, a girl can dream...
