Happy Monday. Okay, not so happy if you did your taxes this weekend. Or haven't done them yet. In which case, stop reading blogs and get moving!

I'm off to work early again today, so I just have one news item for you.

The Norwegian mass murderer Anders Brevik admitted to killing 77 people in last year's massacre, but says it was self-defense. His mental health will be an ongoing issue during the trial.

1 Gabe in early this morning but I'm ready:

Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, April 16th, 2012. On this day in 1746 the Battle of Culloden occurred at which Bonnie Prince Charles and the Jacobite rebellion went down in defeat. This sparked the first great wave of Scottish migration to the colonies. Duncan McLoud hardest hit. On this day in 1947 Texas City, TX was destroyed when a French ship carrying a cargo of ammonium nitrate blew up.

6 Two OWS organizers arrested for trying to attack NYC copy with a metal pipe. Now we will see if Bloomingidiot is ready to get serious. I did a little research for the name they gave for the "lawyer". He was listed as an international lawyer practicing out of NYC and London.

From some of the comments he has made on forums it is obvious he is an anarcho-commie. OK Bloomie, if I am not mistaken assault with a metal pipe is assault with a deadly weapon and is normally good for a long stretch. In NY assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer is a class B felony and good for 25 years. So, is "shit going to get serious"?

http://is.gd/7Az5fn

The NY Daily News has a lot more detail. These goons were actually trying to destroy a Starbucks. Pensley wasn't the only one with metal pipes. These guys should get some serious jail time and if Bloomie doesn't go for it it will be London all over again. Note that they were charged with second degree assault. It should have been first degree since it was a police officer who was assaulted. It appears they are pussing out already.

20 Since the moron horde is vast and varied, I'll throw out my PC problem and see if anyone has any ideas.

I went to clone my big main drive on my home system yesterday morning.
Standalone clone went fine (though it took many hours), switched the new drive to primary, old drive
as secondary, booted up, oh what's this? Hardware change, sorry no
boot for you, please use the repair option from your CD. Oh, no can do,
both drives are encrypted and the CD boot doesn't load the driver. Oh
well, put the original drive back as primary and reboot, oh, so sorry,
hardware change, please use the repair option from your CD. Arg.

Right now I have the box up on a spare drive that I put a minimal install on and am copying, again, the old primary to yet another disk but unencrypted. Presumably, I can then repair and boot the live system and go through the clone again, this time unencrypted.

These multiGig drives take forever to copy. PITA.

After decades of computer use and many hard drive failures and switchouts I have determined that software backup programs are shit.

What I do now is keep all of my program outputs (files created) in a single directory which I backup to an external hard drive. If my computer goes down I simply reload all the software from scratch on a clean install and then restore the files in that directory.

It is a LOT less material to backup. The problem now is with last two new computers wifey got. No disks with computer. Must make a mirror image of computer.

27 I got a new terabyte drive with more cache memory for higher performance, that's why I was doing the clone, not for backing up. I have a Grand-Father-Son set of external T-drives for that. (I'm old school)

I think that my mistake was not unencrypting the drive prior to cloning. (I use truecrypt, which I have been quite pleased with).

I'm going to ponder getting a smaller SATA drive to use as primary unencrypted, and mounting the big encrypted drive on /usr, something that W7 allows I think. Must RTFM.

41 There is a cadre of these relatively young, nazi-type, anti-Euro males across nations, but primarily focused in Norway, I believe. This guy is hardly the first to go off and kill in the name of their beliefs, just the most deadly.

What are their beliefs? Yeah, it's mostly racist, but also an intense hatred of the socialism under which they have lived their whole lives.

They communicate online, and there are whole communities of these people. Mass murderers in the U.S. have been in touch with the Norwegians, and I'm sure other nations. The Columbine shooters are patron saints of the movement.

So are they insane? I can't imagine how anyone would think so, in the legal sense of the term. They see themselves as freedom fighters of a sort, and sure, that's nutty, but they are hardly the first group of revolutionaries who have resorted to violence as their answer.

We'll see many many more of these springing up all over Europe in the years to come.

Perhaps that's why it wants me to boot from the install disk and do a repair. The rub is that the disk encryption drivers aren't loaded when you boot from the CD. There may be a way to load the drivers, if I put them on a separate disk and I will probably read up on it today at work. Meanwhile I'll take advantage of my extra external disk and copy the primary to it unencrypted.

There is an exception, however, to that method of determination. If you transport company equipment over state lines twice or more in six months you are ineligible for overtime. Apparently it lobbied by truckers, but I'm not sure whether it was by trucking companies or unions. I guess it had to do with getting paid hourly v by the mile.

All I know is that the NLRB didn't consider our company truck as company equipment and I won. I would've won bigger but I had transported some tents twice during one six month period so those six months didn't count. Thinking back, since the tents were rented, I probably could've argued they weren't company equipment and gotten six more months of overtime.

one.

I had an employer who did that- by rights I should have been an hourly employee. Back then I was too young and timid to do anything about it. I wonder if I would be so cowardly now.

That said- that this has gotten to the supreme court is ridiculous. Why does the Federal Government have any say in how much you get paid, and by what structure?

It seems like we're hearing more about police corruption and abuse, but I wonder if that's more a function of a better informed citizenry than it is an increase in such behavior.

Diplomad had a rant about that the other day on his blog, and I've got to say, I've experienced a touch more arrogance lately from cops in my area over the last few years. 1944 ~ 2012
A Celebration of the life of Michael "Flathead"
Blanchard will be held on April 14th, 3 pm 8160 Rosemary St, Commerce
City. Weary of reading obituaries noting someone's courageous battle
with death, Mike wanted it known that he died as a result of being
stubborn, refusing to follow doctors' orders and raising hell for more
than six decades. He enjoyed booze, guns, cars and younger women until
the day he died.
Mike was born July 1944 in Colorado to Clyde and
Ethel Blanchard. A community activist, he is noted for saving the Dr.
Justina Ford house from demolition and defending those who could not
defend themselves. He was a Republican delegate, life member of the NRA,
founder and President of the Dead Cats MC. He loved music.
Mike was
preceded in death by Clyde and Ethel Blanchard, survived by his beloved
sons Mike and Chopper, former wife Jane Transue, brother Stephen
Blanchard (Susan), Uncle Don and Aunt Cynthia Blanchard(his favorite);
Uncle Dill and Aunt Dot, cousins and nephews, Baba Yaga can kiss his
butt. So many of his childhood friends that weren't killed in Vietnam
went on to become criminals, prostitutes and/or Democrats. He asks that
you stop by and re-tell the stories he can no longer tell. As the
Celebration will contain Adult material we respectfully ask that no
children under 18 attend.

Heh. The wife (who started out, back when we were dating, fairly moderate) is relatively quickly becoming just as Conservative as I am. Her disdain for most of what's on cable is quite refreshing.

That said, I miss Mythbusters and Iron Chef America.

We cut down to basic cable (well, the basic package on Uverse) some time ago to save money. But I have to have broadband for when I work from home, and she likes having a land line.

She's agreed to forgo the land-line (we'll be increasing our Cell Phone expenditures, but we still end up saving money), and we should be able to get any non-cable show we watched through some combination of NetFlix, Hulu+, and Amazon Instant Video.

1. The muz scum are infiltrating and reproducing at an alarming rate. They comprise the bulk of the violent criminal element. As you may recall, nearly all rapes in Sweden last year were committed by their kind. I suspect Norway has a similar problem, and is probably covering it up as best they can.
2. There are now no-go zones in the large cities. Look at what's happening in Oslo - you will see the future there.France has no-go zones in several largecities already.
3. Regular Nords and Swedes are often in fear of their lives in their own land. Their cultural norms are trod on every day to an ever increasing extent.
4. The Leftists in his nation (and throughoutEurope)are the ones who bear 95%+ of the responsibility for this invasion. Indeed,Lefties have been caught admitting that they are working to replace indiginous people with these "easily controlled" foreigners.
5. Euro nations have ceded their rights to Brussels - they can't resolve these issues democratically any more, because they will be over-ruled.

Gangs.

Really. In DFW, for instance, Dallas used to be the only area with a real "Gang Problem." They had some branches of the Bloods and Crips, and a few others, to boot. So, one day, Dallas PD decided the best way to combat the gangs was to be the biggest, best armed gang in the city.

So they did, and ran all the gangs out of Dallas proper. But those gangs didn't disband, they just found new territory. So, following Dallas's lead, the new community (I think Grand Prairie was the first) did the same thing. Now, basically the gangs are on a circuit. They'll move in until the city gets ticked off enough to really crack down, and then they'll move on.

I think the second is that there may be some frustration over the inability to use judgement in their work. After all, if they can't be selectively rougher on those who look like trouble, they probably think it's better to be rough to everyone so that no one can claim mistreatment.

Right. For being, in essence, a slightly more violent form of the old Mob. Far better than deciding that some punk kids (some of whom really do "break out of the cycle") should have their citizenship revoked would be to make sure the citizenry are alert and prepared, and to allow the cops to profile for certain classes of crime.

Well, if my solution is too extreme, then what's to be done? Just live with it? I am open to alternate ideas - sadly nobody in authority is taking the issue seriously enough. And the jails are full - what's to be done if we try to lock them all up?
And as far as I'm concerned, the "old mob" was plenty bad enough. And because of the restrictions on dealing with it, how many people had to spend their lives paying protection money to thugs? How many cities were made even more corrupt and lawless as a result of their activities? How many witnesses to crimes disappeared before taking thestand? Even if you discount the 'consentual crimes' element- the mob was and is a bad, bad thing.
I'm amazed at the human capacity to tolerate injustice so long as it's not their ownox being gored.

186 Reactionary is clearly one of those blowhards who doubles down when called out. However, there is a useful point to be made which ties together both the cops and "nuke all the muzzies" subthreads. The point is that power is dangerous. It's dangerous whether it's in the hands of ordinary folk like cops, or in the hands of a government with the power to end the world.

Reactionary doesn't seem to have considered that a government powerful and ruthless enough to do the things he wants will almost certainly become a tyranny. It's basic human nature. If the solution to the muzzie problem is mass extermination, what happens when that government decides that Jews, or gingers, or Scandis, are also undesirable? Conservatives know the answer to that question. It does not end well for humanity.

There are times when mass violence is the only answer (Nazism, Imperial Japan), but at this point, we are far from needing those solutions, emotionally gratifying as they may be to spout off about. I prefer the Jeffersonian approach: as little government coercion as possible.

If we could have the same effect without killing civilians, that would be better, but the nature of such targets is that we really can't.

No. And I'm having trouble deciding if you're just trying to stir things up, if you're really a troll, if you're just that stupid.

What he did say- and he's right- is than any government that is willing to wield force in such a way as to effect the total removal of any segment of the population (by expulsion, confinement, execution, or some combination thereof), is a government that is willing to do the same to any other "troublesome" segment of the population.

We don't really disagree. There is a real difference between minimal collateral damage and deliberately targeting the civilian population. Likewise, Nixon should have continued Linebacker, not cancelled it.

However, sloppy bluster about nuking civilians is just stupid.

IMO, this is a result of an increasingl feminized society. Big Momma Government looks upon some group as being "special" due to "no fault of their own" and therefore deserving of different treatment.

A masculine society would treat all people as equals before the law, as you stated. You know, like we used to.

Ah tax day.
I was watching an MSDNC news clip somewhere where this commentor gave a perfect set of reasons why we need to end the marriage penalty permanently (I believe it is currently ended through this year? Or was it through last year?) In any case she was lamenting that if you have two married people with equal incomes they get hammered in the tax code...then the punch line, she wasn't complaining about the marriage penalty, she was saying this subsidizes "Stay at home moms." which apparently we should quit doing.
I'm not entirely sure where she was going with that one. I mean sure, if a parent stays at home there's less taxes paid then if they worked, of course there's also less income. Also we do subsidize child care (I'd have to do the fairly complex math to see if and when the marriage penalty and the childcare credit start to cancel each other out.) The whole thing was somewhat bizzare. I wasn't sure whether to just be happy that the goal was to end the marriage penalty or be confused about the line of attack.
In any case, I doubt many families are making tons of these distinctions solely on the tax code anyway. To teach family their own, some will want to work, some will have to, every family's situation and desires is different.

More great news from the DOJ:

Al Qaeda Attorney Becomes Number Three Man in the DOJ

Obama’s new appointee, friend and major campaign donor, Tony West, believes terrorism is a matter for criminal courts and not military tribunals. He does not believe any enemy of the United States is a terrorist. He has a history of vigorously supporting Al Qaeda terrorists and is now in charge of the GITMO terrorists’ trials. It puts him in a supervisory position of the government lawyers charged with prosecuting the terrorists.

Tony West was the aggressive defense lawyer for John Walker Lindh, the American Taliban.

249 A BRAZEN, 18-hour Taliban attack on
the Afghan capital has ended as insurgents who had holed up overnight in
two buildings were overcome by heavy gunfire from Afghan-led forces and
pre-dawn air assaults from US-led coalition helicopters.

Kabul residents awoke to a second day of loud explosions and the
crackle of gunfire. As darkness turned to dawn, Afghan-led forces fired
one rocket-propelled grenade after another into a building in the centre
of the city where insurgents began their attack yesterday.
Fighting there and at the Afghan parliament building on the southwest side of the city ended just before 8am local time.
Afghan
authorities said the wave of attacks across Afghanistan left 36 Taliban
militants dead but also claimed the lives of eight members of the
Afghan security forces and three civilians.
The violence showed
the Taliban and their allies are far from beaten and underscored the
security challenge facing government forces as US and NATO forces draw
down. The majority of international combat troops are scheduled to leave
by the end of 2014.

Because you don't pay interest on other forms of housing?? It's the interest that's deductible not the payment. Same with school tuition. You can deduct the interest on the loan.
If you paid taxes on that interest and the entity that collected the interest paid taxes on it then it would be taxes twice. Money is often taxed twice but mortagages shouldn't be. The entire reason for buying a house et al is to grow equity.

If you had to buy a less expensive house because you could not deduct the mortgage interest then the local municipalities would have decreased income. It almost balances out--the property taxes and the mortgage interest. If you're renting then you have to realize you aren't paying the taxes which is about the same as the owner's deduction. The advantage to the owner is that, if held long enough, he grows his capital where the renter does not.

It has little to do with how many times something is taxed or Credit Card Interest or car loans would also be tax deductible. The way I see it was another way to use the tax code to seek a desired outcome (more people buying houses vs. renting) and the Tax code shouldn't be used for this purpose, it subsidizes unwise decisions.
I never got the "Home as building equity" thing either. A home is like any other investiment, it will likely go up in the long term (thestock market does tend to average 7% over any10 years that don't begin or end in a recession)but it could drop out at any time (or not go up at all.) I've got lots of friends who bought houses in 2007 with the idea of "starting to build equity" rather than "Flushing money down the toliet renting." They're all out tons of money now (and since they bought small homes and/or condos have to choose between moving or trying to raise a family in an area built for single people.)
I'm not against home ownership by any stretch of the imagination, I just don't think we should need governmental push to make people buy them.

They were incredibly uninformed or, naive? My very best friend got married and decided that 2007 was an excellent time to move WAY THE HELL out and buy a house that they didn't need in a mcmansion neighborhood. I warned her and warned her and warned her. She wouldn't listen. You are only building equity if you invest intelligently. We've paid a very reasonable mortgage because we put 30% down in 1992 on a house that has quadrupled in value and stayed within two hundered thousand of it's top value. I've built huge amounts of equity. But I had to buy a smaller house in a "close in" market not a mcmansion in bumblefuck.

277 >>>The States are handling this fine already assholes.<<<

Not my state,Vic. I know and have known plenty of drivers whose age related disabilities made them dangerous without any intervention from the state. Worse still, I know of a narcoleptic whose brother raised concerns with DMV and after initially revoking, reinstated her driver's license to comply with ADA.

278 Kenyan businesses lately are increasingly becoming recipients of U.S. government largesse, as the Obama Administration, among pursuing other endeavors, aims to expand "livestock-related economic opportunities" in that nation. Although this and other recently released presolicitation notices for unrelated programs serve as advance alerts to potential vendors—and therefore do not offer cost estimates and other details— a review of U.S. government contracting actions nonetheless indicates a spike of activity in Kenya in a variety of sectors.

The White House is committing to a five-year effort to "improve the inclusiveness and competitiveness" of the livestock industry specifically in Marsabit and Garissa counties, Kenya, according to a presolicitation notice released April 12 that U.S. Trade Aid Monitor located via routine database research.

279 States do not need to issue driver's licenses to people with narcolepsy in order to comply with ADA. If they are doing that they are full of shit.

Regardless what they are full of, that is what they did. Similarly, I have known a 90 yr old and 100 yr old with licenses. Neither was safe to drive.

I don't know what should be done about this either, since we are a rural area and revocation is crippling.

Posted by: kdny at April 16, 2012 10:37 AM (63qg4)

281 They probably wouldn't get a license here.

Posted by: Vic at April 16, 2012 10:42 AM (YdQQY)

282 In any event, it IS a State issue.

Posted by: Vic at April 16, 2012 10:42 AM (YdQQY)

283 So I guess it's fair to say not all states are doing a good job. Course, it's their job to do and not the Feds.
Still kills me to think of pulling someone's license in a place where there is really no public transit and most people are not in reasonable walking distance of many of life's necessities.

This is where relatives and neighbors are supposed to take a hand. It isn't a lot of trouble when you are making a trip to the store yourself to call on a neighbor to take them as well.

285 Some folks never plan.

A two storey house in the suburbs. Stairs to get to the bedroom. Expect to drive to the store and the doctor's office on their own. Living alone.

When they cannot drive anymore they are surprised.

Stupidity.

286 There are old folks buying new cars every 3-4 years, paying insurance, etc. Need to go to the store? Call a cab. Pay the waiting charge. Give the cabbie a nice tip. Say "See you next week, same time?"

287 If you really want to know, and don't mind turning up on Fed watch lists for the rest of your life, I'm pretty certain how-to on ANFO bombs is available online with some digging.

The DoJ will require a thorough housecleaning after Dear Misleader gets the heave-ho. I have a mental image conflating 'Office Space' and US Marines clearing out Pacific bunkers with flamethrowers. Warms my shriveled heart.

And the true digital curmudgeon wants you off of his LAN. Just sayin', folks.

288 Oh, and in 'This Crap Happens' news, here in Alabama the State Board of Education just took over the BoE of the City of Birmingham.

Did I mention said BoE is an elected body? And that this is completely within the bounds of our state constitution?

I don't quite know which bugs me more, that it can happen, or that in all likelihood it was justified. B'ham is whack beyond all recognition. (See "Jefferson County, Bankruptcy" for further reading.)

Agreed, ADA has a specific clause in it somewhere about not being a danger or "undue burden." To potential to cause an accident eliminates the applicability of ADA. (See also cases of physicians/surgeons with various disorders that cause them to have problems performign surgeries.)

I could have sworn I answered these questions hours ago. The Norwegian nazis are a fairly organized bunch, and they have contact with nazis all over the world. They are dedicated to bringing terror to the bad people (anyone not pasty white) in their midst, and don't mind shooting and bombing their countrymen, who they consider as guilty for the bad stuff going on as the brown people are.

So that's what they do, exchange bomb-making recipes on the internet, practice their tactics, and when one of them gets the gumption to do so, he goes on his killing spree. There have been others before, there will be others to follow. I'd say they get off on this stuff, but some of them probably see themselves as martyrs to the cause, as cold and rational as hate can get.

291 Aha! A simpler solution to my clone problem:

If Windows is damaged and cannot start, the TrueCrypt Rescue Disk allows you to permanently decrypt the partition/drive before Windows starts. In the Rescue Disk screen, select Repair Options > Permanently decrypt system partition/drive. Enter the correct password and wait until decryption is complete. Then you can e.g. boot your MS Windows setup CD/DVD to repair your Windows installation.

Now it will only take me 20 hours to fix it once I get home.

292 Speaking of taxes in the late, great state of Kalifornia, now they have hounded Lucasfilm out. Seems an expansion would cause irreperable damage to the precious yuppie ecosystem. Lucas then sold his land to a low income housing developer! Bwahahahaha!

293 "I think we paid a terrible price for healthcare," Frank told the
magazine in a lengthy interview as he prepares to retire at the end of
his 16th term. "I would not have pushed it as hard. As a matter of fact,
after [Sen.] Scott Brown [R-Mass.] won [in January 2010], I suggested
going back. I would have started with financial reform, but certainly
not healthcare."
