| Overnight Open Thread (4-15-2012)Very, very sick at the moment. So I'd be washing your hands obsessively after reading tonight's ONT if I were you. Me - I'm gonna eat some meat and then shamble over to the ambulatory care center. Overthinking and Your Child-Like Mind This is a test that supposed to show how sometimes knowing too much leads to overthinking and keeps you from solving problems creatively. Now I don't really believe this to be true except for superficial levels of knowledge about something. But after two or three minutes pondering this puzzle I decided I probably was overthinking it and took a break. When I came back, I saw the answer in about 30 seconds. Oh and the article's anecdote about NASA being too uncreative to use pencils in space is pretty much all bullshit. The engineers at NASA weren't stupid and there were good reasons for switching over to pens instead.
If a gang of white American thugs attacked African-Americans, and defended their action on the ground that they were protesting Robert Mugabe's seizure of white-owned farms in Zimbabwe, the world would laugh at their foolishness even as it condemned their bigotry. This isn't quite how it works when goons around the world attack Jews and Jewish buildings and defend themselves by saying that they are angered by things the Israeli government has done. Obama's 2012 Campaign Strategy In Pictures CA Assemblyman Chuck DeVore: Gone To Texas It's bad when even the politicians start fleeing. But not surprising that conservative Republicans with actual skills would be the first ones out. When Tennessean Davy Crockett lost his seat in Congress, he famously told the world "Y'all can go to hell. I'm going to Texas." Now California Assemblyman Chuck DeVore is following Crockett's lead. [A]s with many in the Golden State, I have found it hard to earn enough to support my family. My old aerospace clientele has fled to greener, less-expensive pastures. Combined with the drain on our savings caused by six years of public service in the Assembly, we have come to the reluctant conclusion that it is time to move. The good news is that there are still other places in America where the taxes are lower and the regulations less onerous than here in California, my home for most of the past 36 years. One such place is Texas. ...Believe me, with what I know about California, having been the chief Republican on the Assembly's tax writing committee, Texas is a vastly different land in regards to public policy. Get Your Own Ace/Ewok Action Figure Users start by obtaining well-lit front and profile head shots of themselves against a neutral background - glasses are a no-no. They then upload those shots to Firebox's website so that a tiny model of said head can be made, using a 3D printer. The end product appears to be a little on the "low-res" side, as most 3D-printed items presently are, but it's certainly presentable. Once the head is complete, it's sent to the buyer, along with one of five superhero dolls (sorry - action figures) of their choice. The customer then pops off the stock superhero head, and replaces it with their own. What they do with the original superhero head is entirely up to them. Getting a Personalised Superhero Action Figure of your own will set you back £79.99 (US$127). Best Obituary Ever Weekly AoSHQ Commenter Standings Top 10 commenters: Top 10 sockpuppeteers: The group. I figured the answer to that puzzle in about 10 seconds - its the number of enclosed loops in the various digits, so the last one has to be "2" since 8 has a top and bottom loop.

Kitteh's sitting on my shoulder right now. Totally bonded to me. I'm sure it will grow out of it and start plotting my death within six months. But I'll worry about that later. Our older cat, of course, is so pissed off you wouldn't believe it. Well, actually, I'm sure the cat owners here totally get it. It's really kind of amusing to watch her sulk.... Good evening, good people--again. Project Ford is back from the body shop, resplendent in it's new green paint. 32 Got a new puppeh and kitteh this weekend for the twins. Awww that's sweet. Posted by: mama winger at April 15, 2012 09:39 PM (P6QsQ) Yeah. Bribery coming home to roost. The twins had been unremittingly hostile towards each other for an extended period of time. And they'd also been beggingpleadingcajolingdamnnearscreaming for their own pets. So my wife told them to shape up for a year, and it would happen. I'm not sure that we got a full year out of them, but they definitely cleaned up their acts. Sooooo. Pets Are Us. Hopefully, they'll be of long lives. The kitten is a rescue, which we've always tried to do. The pup is from a pet store, but we really tried to keep away from the puppy factories. I think we succeeded. It'll be fun. The boys are learning something about responsibility, so that's always a good thing. The puppy's not quite house broken yet, but that'll be handled in the next few days. And I am oh-so-definitely a sucker for cute. I'll see if I can get some pics posted to my blog in the next couple of days. Share the cute, right? ;-) Posted by: NukemHill at April 15, 2012 09:45 PM (7WLzC) 44

According to my professor friend, he had the lowest intellectual capacity in the building. Posted by: Hummingbird at April 15, 2012 10:37 PM (R5yLq) That's gonna be his call, though. If he thinks it'll be fine, then let go of your worries. If he doesn't, then let him direct the flow for a while. In the end, though, you'll probably just connive with his daughter and go behind his back. I think you may be missing my point..........you are not making it more difficult on him. True, but the Israeli government could be subtly encouraging these broadcasts in a last-ditch effort to get the Iranians to stop their program by projecting Israeli strength. It's a nice effort, however it is doomed because a) the Iranian leadership, despite all the schisms between A-jad, the Head Mullah, and the Revolutionary Guards/Mullah Inner Circle, all seem to want the enrichment project to proceed regardless and b) the Iranians know that the Israels, regardless of Israeli superiority in tactics and weapons, cannot destroy all of the Iranian enrichment capabilities without the help of the US (even in a support role). The other thing that needs to be considered is that it's obvious that the current Iranian leadership has to be taken out. If Bibi is up for that task remains an open question. I solved the puzzle, but I was lucky they did not have a '4' in that final number that was left to be solved. Instead of counting the curves, I just looked at it like a substitution code. With all those quad numbers equal to zero, it was easy to figure out the true value of each digit. But, there were no '4's in the examples. So, if the final number had been 2584, I would not have a way of figuring out what the value of '4' was. The closest I would be able to come would be 2+(value of 4).

That puzzle was interesting (I got it in a few minutes) but the explanation in the article was stupid.
I won't spoil the problem, but the article tries to explain the solution in the most ridiculous way (and a totally unnecessary on) ... just to make it seem sort of "trickier". It's a simple problem and any programmer who took an hour on it is ready for little else than to help Pixy with improving the comment system, here .... Real programming, such a person should stay away from. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at April 15, 2012 11:19 PM (X3lox) Posted by: navycopjoe at April 15, 2012 11:20 PM (5tiWJ) 277
Don't worry about meeting SoS's ex, Hummingbird.
She is obviously *at least* as smart and discerning as you are because she married SoS back when he was less awesome than he is today (hard to wrap your mind around that, I know.) My guy, is going to be a 2x Granpa very shortly but one thing his ex-wife and I can agree on is what a charming and fundamentally decent dood he is. Was he a bad husband? “Hillary Rosen is absolutely not a paid adviser to the DNC or to the Obama campaign, absolutely not,” he said. I figured that there was much more, given the pervasive usage of the term in modern culture. But no one says ...
Posted by: Arbalest at April 15, 2012 11:42 PM (QAmbO) Well, in the firearms context it's a way to say that you are preparing for home/self-defense without saying you are thinking of a specific target. Almost like saying you are getting it for a fictional target, so if anything every goes haywire you have not indicated the intent of shooting a particular class of person (home invader, whatever). In the general culture though, I find the whole vampire/zombie thing unsettling. I think the pop culture trend shows a desire to dehumanize other outside your group/clique. Creepy. Posted by: Underground Vulgarian at April 15, 2012 11:52 PM (Aaxiu) 364

Must read... Romney at a private fundraiser in Palm Beach was off limits to reporters but was 'over heard" by reporters on the sidewalk below.
http://tinyurl.com/c6pn2ca One possibility floated by Romney included the elimination of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Cabinet-level agency once led by Romney's father, George. "I'm going to take a lot of departments in Washington, and agencies, and combine them. Some eliminate, but I'm probably not going to lay out just exactly which ones are going to go," Romney said. "Things like Housing and Urban Development, which my dad was head of, that might not be around later. But I'm not going to actually go through these one by one. What I can tell you is, we've got far too many bureaucrats. I will send a lot of what happens in Washington back to the states." Asked about the fate of the Department of Education in a potential Romney administration, the former governor suggested it would also face a dramatic restructuring. it goes on. "It was my early birthday present for someone to be critical of me as a mother, and that was really a defining moment, and I loved it," Mrs. Romney said. It's already been done before. There was a version that worked with the Live! camera and genlock on the Amiga over twenty years ago. It really isn't a problem. The scripting used to drive the Pioneer industrial LD players was very slow. Like interpreted BASIC slow. Actually, BASIC worked just fine for controlling that kind of game. The big challenge for the early home versions was the FMV. If you had a real LD player or a hardware MPEG decoder, it became a simple exercise. Hey, Webworker..... is the little sick girl you mentioned before your own girl?? How is she? How is teh kitteh? Oh, no, no. Our kids are all grown. This girl is just someone my wife got to know through the doc's. Mrs got a cute pic of her eating the Cancer cat's a mess, but improving, amazingly. Behaving more normally again, which for her is to meow loudly and annoyingly and get white hair all over my pants legs. But it's always something. This morning, our poor old shepherd couldn't stand up on his own. We've seen this before, not a good sign. He's an old friend. Posted by: A Mindful Webworker at April 16, 2012 01:27 AM (lBpVP) 457

Dragon's Lair was something of a standby for demoing any sort of interactive video system for a long time. I had a colleague at Cinemaware who'd been involved in a number of LD-based projects and the company was trying to be in the lead on CD-ROM. We actually shipped the first CD-ROM PC game in the UK but it was really just a synced audio track for the existing Defender of the Crown. But it was considered a big deal at the time. Amiga Live! was a very early precursor to the Kinect, being one of the first commercially available camera driven movement sensing interaction systems. There had been other stuff going back to the 70s but this was the first that was a packaged product rather than a lab demo. I'm not finding a good example on YouTube but the sort of thing that was a freebie with Intel web cams by 1999 was a big deal then, appearing to paint a virtual room by moving your arms around. Using onscreen targets for controller inputs rather than paint brushes was a natural. Not cheap enough for a marketable game but a glimpse of the future. Sony's EyeToy for the PS2 brought things forward a bit more and Kinect upped the ante a lot on the sensors used and the pre-processing in the unit. There are plenty of Kinect games much more complex than Dragon's Lair already. I don't think they'll have a problem. It won't be perfect but nothing is so far in motion control. As far as best guns to own go, the ol' Ar-15 is so common in America almost every redneck, and I am one, owns at least one. Parts are easy to come by, and there are more accessories available than you can name, plus if crap really hits the fan they'll be plenty of them laying around for spare parts. My favorite would be the Colt Law Enforcement edition with a Trijicon tritium sight, like the RMR...if I had one, which I don't, because guns are bad and only evil people own guns. Others would argue the 5.56 mm is too small a round and is only good for varmits, and they would have a point to an extent, and you can buy a much better gas piston system like the SIG 556, or go for a bigger rifle like an M-1 or AR-10 firing the .308 or 7.62x51. But if i was going to have just one gun when the world ends, the zombies come, and hunger games and fallout come true, it would be the AR-15. But that's just me. Foil the windows? Back when I worked rotating shift work I had two large pieces of cardboard that I cut out of a box. Good morning, everyone.
SCOAMF is withholding comment on the Secret Service while the investigation is going on. In the normal course of action we would have had the usual posing comments and unnecessary interjection of himself into the situation, particularly is he could portray himself as the victim or hero in the situation. Instead, he clams up. I am a bit more curious about what's going on with that, given his reaction. Posted by: Miss Marple at April 16, 2012 05:48 AM (GoIUi) 539

If you have a chance of alerting cops with a shot, use a bow or call animal control. Morning guys.
I found the easiest way to solve tht puzzle was to click off on the link to the answer. *Takes a Bow* Posted by: CoolCzech at April 16, 2012 06:12 AM (niZvt) 545
Well, looks like the judge in the Zimmerman trial has found a reason to recuse herself. Does not want to be the one throw the POS case out of court at the bond hearing.

I wouldn't want that POS case either. It's gonna be toxic to anyone that touches it. The silver lining to this, of course, is that the prosecutor is damaged goods from now on. Posted by: Sticky Wicket at April 16, 2012 06:20 AM (L7hol) 548
She hasn't recused herself. She just disclosed a possible conflict of interest and is waiting for a response from the other lawyers.

@547: well, Vic says it's not true, so I guess it doesn't matter.
But if that judge really thinks the case is improper and unjust... It's her professional and moral duty to throw it out. Posted by: CoolCzech at April 16, 2012 06:31 AM (niZvt) 550
I only forwarded what the news reports are. I don't know if its true or not.

BTW, in the So Ironic It Hurts Department, the MSNBC Crazy Old Wild-eyed Politico Coot is asking: why the secrecy? What do we really know about... ROMNEY?
Now I have to pop an Excedrin... Posted by: CoolCzech at April 16, 2012 06:33 AM (niZvt) 552
I still think the whole case is a squirrel. Why did it take so long before it became a national issue? Its almost like they had to go through a bunch of news reports to find one they could use huh?

News up already

#552 Vic, that is EXACTLY what I think happened. And they probably thought a guy named George Zimmerman was a white Jewish guy, even better for them!
Alas, it was not so. And why haven't the Hispanic groups come out in support of Zimmerman? Because they are simply an arm of the democratic party, just like the NAACP. Furthermore, no one bothered to check Zimmerman's history and political affiliation so they cannot even tar him with the GOP brush. However, the fact that a sitting president would deliberately start a lynch mob for political posturing is pretty damn scary. I'm a programmer with higher education and I got it (the loop thing) in about 2 minutes.

Figured out the puzzle in about 30 seconds, which is strange, because I'm not a big puzzle solver. Chalk it up to a lucky 2nd guess. ..fritz..

Took me about 5 minutes, but the intro is a big-ass hint about what it isn't. But, yeah, I still went down a few dead-ends because of my giant head.

"Am I to belive that the *shape* of the numerals is the primary factor in the hypothetical pre-school child's mind AND that this 4yr old is capable of addition?"
Exactly my thoughts, this seems inconsistent. If they can add, why aren't they seeing numbers instead of shapes? If all they see is shapes, how are they adding? Posted by: Christopher Taylor at April 16, 2012 12:30 PM (r4wIV) 563
re: longevity of handles:
I kind of stole this one from my SO, who has been using it since '93 or so on USENET, before that it was the name of his band. They were Screamin' Weasel (after the aircraft) but it sounded too punk and he got tired of explaining to venue managers, no, they weren't death metal or whatever, so they had a brainstorm, they liked the weasel illustration they had for a logo so they wanted to keep the weasel, and they floated Sgt. Weasel, Mr. Weasel, (my SO's fav was Senor Weasel, but he was voted down) and finally they settled on Doctor Weasel, but people shortened it themselves to Doc Weasel and the band became known that way locally, they bought the domain for a band site, then he and his programmer friends ended up using it for a variety of projects and the band had to abandon the site which had become too out-there. So the name is venerable, if not respectable. Posted by: ms. docweasel at April 16, 2012 01:05 PM (oTC8Y) 564
45 seconds, then again my preschool kid is still trying to figure it out. In that time I went through bases, letters, a dozen math equations, pencil lifts, digital fabrications, before hitting on the holes... If I had done pencil lifts and digital fabrications first, then I probably could have done it in 10 seconds. However, having gone through so much math in my life, because they were numbers, I wasted my time on mathematical sequences, it wouldn't have happened if I was an ignorant preschooler with no knowledge of numbers, then they would have just been shapes. My preschooler knows multiplication so she is still stuck trying to figure out the 'math' of it thinking it's a math challenge.
