Overthinking and Your Child-Like Mind
This is a test that supposed to show how sometimes knowing too much leads to overthinking and keeps you from solving problems creatively. Now I don't really believe this to be true except for superficial levels of knowledge about something. But after two or three minutes pondering this puzzle I decided I probably was overthinking it and took a break. When I came back, I saw the answer in about 30 seconds.
Oh and the article's anecdote about NASA being too uncreative to use pencils in space is pretty much all bullshit. The engineers at NASA weren't stupid and there were good reasons for switching over to pens instead.

Good evening, good people--again. Project Ford is back from the body shop, resplendent in it's new green paint. The front clip is still off and will sit for another day for the paint to harden before final assembly. Paint has hardener to facilitate the drying process, otherwise it would be weeks before we could finish. Now, simply taping edges etc, will protect things while we bolt it together.
Going to look beautiful when done.

Yeah. Bribery coming home to roost. The twins had been unremittingly hostile towards each other for an extended period of time. And they'd also been beggingpleadingcajolingdamnnearscreaming for their own pets. So my wife told them to shape up for a year, and it would happen. I'm not sure that we got a full year out of them, but they definitely cleaned up their acts.
Sooooo. Pets Are Us.
Hopefully, they'll be of long lives. The kitten is a rescue, which we've always tried to do. The pup is from a pet store, but we really tried to keep away from the puppy factories. I think we succeeded.
It'll be fun. The boys are learning something about responsibility, so that's always a good thing. The puppy's not quite house broken yet, but that'll be handled in the next few days.
And I am oh-so-definitely a sucker for cute.
I'll see if I can get some pics posted to my blog in the next couple of days. Share the cute, right? ;-)

Got an anecdotal report from the "soccer mom" voting block today. Working a game on the line and while I couldn't hear everything they were discussing, Obamacare was clearly the topic. At one point one of the moms said very clearly and angrily "But it's just so socialist!" Never heard anything like that before from them, especially about politics, and usually when there's that much anger from the crowd it's directed at me.

It's a nice effort, however it is doomed because a) the Iranian leadership, despite all the schisms between A-jad, the Head Mullah, and the Revolutionary Guards/Mullah Inner Circle, all seem to want the enrichment project to proceed regardless and b) the Iranians know that the Israels, regardless of Israeli superiority in tactics and weapons, cannot destroy all of the Iranian enrichment capabilities without the help of the US (even in a support role).
The other thing that needs to be considered is that it's obvious that the current Iranian leadership has to be taken out. If Bibi is up for that task remains an open question.

Our older cat's hissing fits yesterday were epic. They were 100% directed towards the new kitteh, though. She's calmed down significantly today. But she's still sulking about it all. Damned neighborhood's gone to hell, and all that.
She will actually turn away when the two new kids are wrestling with each other on the family room floor. You can almost hear her think "Dogs and Cats, sleeping together!"

I'd guess there's something to that...one of the defining traits of us spazoids is an obsession with practicality, e.g. "but does it work?" is a big part of the ethos. Oh she is an amazing kid! She is so much like her father it's almost scary. The really funny thing is that Stuck is not her biological father. Her bio-dad ran off when she was only a year old. Stuck started dating her mom and they got married. He's the only dad she has ever known. When she talked about it I almost cried. She said Dad always told her that most parents just get stuck with whatever kid they get, but I chose you.

Oh she is an amazing kid! She is so much like her father it's almost scary. The really funny thing is that Stuck is not her biological father. Her bio-dad ran off when she was only a year old. Stuck started dating her mom and they got married. He's the only dad she has ever known. When she talked about it I almost cried. She said Dad always told her that most parents just get stuck with whatever kid they get, but I chose you.

Well, in the firearms context it's a way to say that you are preparing for home/self-defense without saying you are thinking of a specific target. Almost like saying you are getting it for a fictional target, so if anything every goes haywire you have not indicated the intent of shooting a particular class of person (home invader, whatever).In the general culture though, I find the whole vampire/zombie thing unsettling. I think the pop culture trend shows a desire to dehumanize other outside your group/clique. Creepy.

Thanks! I'm so nervous and anxious I went out this afternoon and got all new socks, underwear, shirts, pants, belt and shoes. I haven't been on a date in 7 years. I remembered the 'ette's wardrobe advice to chemjeff while making the purchases and asked my 18 yo daughter to come over and help make sure stuff matched colors and looked good on me.

There's not much a good old 12 ga. pump shotgun, e.g. Remington 11-87 or Mossberg 500, can't do inside 100 yards, no matter what kind of coyotes you're worried about.

Of course, 4=? because the puzzle has nothing to do with loops, but with numbers. You could have written everything with Roman Numerals (adding a "0", of course) or stick counting (again, adding a "0") and the whole puzzle would work the same ... without any loops at all.

It's already been done before. There was a version that worked with the Live! camera and genlock on the Amiga over twenty years ago. It really isn't a problem. The scripting used to drive the Pioneer industrial LD players was very slow. Like interpreted BASIC slow. Actually, BASIC worked just fine for controlling that kind of game.
The big challenge for the early home versions was the FMV. If you had a real LD player or a hardware MPEG decoder, it became a simple exercise.

Dragon's Lair was something of a standby for demoing any sort of interactive video system for a long time. I had a colleague at Cinemaware who'd been involved in a number of LD-based projects and the company was trying to be in the lead on CD-ROM. We actually shipped the first CD-ROM PC game in the UK but it was really just a synced audio track for the existing Defender of the Crown. But it was considered a big deal at the time.
Amiga Live! was a very early precursor to the Kinect, being one of the first commercially available camera driven movement sensing interaction systems. There had been other stuff going back to the 70s but this was the first that was a packaged product rather than a lab demo. I'm not finding a good example on YouTube but the sort of thing that was a freebie with Intel web cams by 1999 was a big deal then, appearing to paint a virtual room by moving your arms around.
Using onscreen targets for controller inputs rather than paint brushes was a natural. Not cheap enough for a marketable game but a glimpse of the future. Sony's EyeToy for the PS2 brought things forward a bit more and Kinect upped the ante a lot on the sensors used and the pre-processing in the unit.
There are plenty of Kinect games much more complex than Dragon's Lair already. I don't think they'll have a problem. It won't be perfect but nothing is so far in motion control.

As far as best guns to own go, the ol' Ar-15 is so common in America almost every redneck, and I am one, owns at least one. Parts are easy to come by, and there are more accessories available than you can name, plus if crap really hits the fan they'll be plenty of them laying around for spare parts. My favorite would be the Colt Law Enforcement edition with a Trijicon tritium sight, like the RMR...if I had one, which I don't, because guns are bad and only evil people own guns.
Others would argue the 5.56 mm is too small a round and is only good for varmits, and they would have a point to an extent, and you can buy a much better gas piston system like the SIG 556, or go for a bigger rifle like an M-1 or AR-10 firing the .308 or 7.62x51. But if i was going to have just one gun when the world ends, the zombies come, and hunger games and fallout come true, it would be the AR-15. But that's just me.

Foil the windows?
Back when I worked rotating shift work I had two large pieces of cardboard that I cut out of a box. They were cut to the size of the bedroom windows and I inserted them in the windows when I was ready to sleep. That way they could be easily inserted and removed.

I kind of stole this one from my SO, who has been using it since '93 or so on USENET, before that it was the name of his band. They were Screamin' Weasel (after the aircraft) but it sounded too punk and he got tired of explaining to venue managers, no, they weren't death metal or whatever, so they had a brainstorm, they liked the weasel illustration they had for a logo so they wanted to keep the weasel, and they floated Sgt. Weasel, Mr. Weasel, (my SO's fav was Senor Weasel, but he was voted down) and finally they settled on Doctor Weasel, but people shortened it themselves to Doc Weasel and the band became known that way locally, they bought the domain for a band site, then he and his programmer friends ended up using it for a variety of projects and the band had to abandon the site which had become too out-there. So the name is venerable, if not respectable.

45 seconds, then again my preschool kid is still trying to figure it out. In that time I went through bases, letters, a dozen math equations, pencil lifts, digital fabrications, before hitting on the holes... If I had done pencil lifts and digital fabrications first, then I probably could have done it in 10 seconds.
However, having gone through so much math in my life, because they were numbers, I wasted my time on mathematical sequences, it wouldn't have happened if I was an ignorant preschooler with no knowledge of numbers, then they would have just been shapes. My preschooler knows multiplication so she is still stuck trying to figure out the 'math' of it thinking it's a math challenge.
