Saturday Morning Open Thread

Why won't the Greatest Basketball-Playing President Evar!!!11!™ play a game with Scott Brown? Because losing would poke a huge hole in his gigantic but paper-thin ego, perhaps? Just spitballin' here.

Also, ICYMI it looks like the Secret Service had a little too much extra time on its hands down in Colombia. The whole detail had to be swapped out after it was discovered they mistook Colombian whores for their normal clientele of politicians. Seems understandable, and I'm sure it's bush's fault anyway.

Barack Obama has already kicked off the biggest election in our lifetime. He has spent YOUR TAXPAYER MONEY to kick-start his campaign. And you should get really upset about this. Accounting for the time spent since Barack Obama announced his reelection campaign last April, here is a little food for thought:

113 fundraisers x 2 hours per event= 226 HOURS = 5.65 WORK WEEKS!

And that does not include the $240,000 or so price tag for Air Force One, security, etc. per event! Also does not include hookers and blow..

59 @56. Mr. North,
She's most likely experiencing pain from swelling. As long as she's not feverish or feeling nauseous or light-headed, she should be fine. If she was given pain meds, tell her to take them as prescribed. If she wasn't prescribed any, have her take some Ibuprofin as recommended on the bottle. If she's still having these problems without any relief come Monday, she needs to contact her Doctor. I hope this helps.

78 Liberalism aside, since I would tell a lib to bang it on the table repeatedly until it quits hurting----she needs to raise the wrist above her heart, ice the cast (I know this sounds stupid but it works) 20 minutes on an 20 minutes off, and assuming she weighs over 120 she can take up to 600 milligrams of ibuprofen (3 tablets or advil or motrin or generic). Really, the elevation and the icing are more important than anything else. If she's letting it hang down then that's why it hurts.

I wouldn't waste my time in the emergency room without spending 24 hours icing and elevating. Don't go to the doctor, call him.

Amen to that. I almost came to blows with an ER triage nurse a few years ago. I took my wife to the ER with excruciating pain in her ear.. the whole side of her face was swollen (turned out to be cellulitis).

But, while she's sitting there for 3 1/2 hours moaning in pain, they are escorting the non-English speaking people into another section almost immediately. Half of them were parents with babies with ear infections or the flu - the ER being their primary care physician these days.

I'm like the neighborhood triage nurse, other parents bring their kids by for me to "look" at. Recently, an over protective mother brings by her 10 year old son because he had banged his chin. He wasn't crying, there was no blood, so I pressed on it. He didn't flinch. I'm said, um, if a kid is hurt enough to go to the ER they will flinch if you touch the source of the pain or there will be blood or loose skin or swelling or dangling limbs (my fav). 176 "why does Romney hate women?" MFM.
--

As ever, the Democrats fall prey to their reliance on the word "HATE". As if it's Mitt who hates women, because Barry hates them--pfft. There's all the difference in the world between Mitt's and Barry's professional mothers' lives, relationship between mother/son, and choice of wives. And the only way Democrats interpret emotion is 'HATE' -- except when speaking of themselves, as if Stanley was a loving ma.

George and Lenore Romney had 2 girls and 2 boys, Mitt's the family baby. (Not surprisingly, the siblings are keeping out of the public fray.) His mom (from a politically influential family) earned her English lit. degree and studied acting (Stanislavski System "inspiring"), enjoyed independence with a Hollywood acting career before marrying and becoming a stay-at-home mom. After raising the kids, she ran for Mich.Senate in her day. My, my, my. Acting politician: Dreams from my mother.

"Stanislavski's system is a progression of techniques used to train actors to draw believable emotions to their performances. The method that was originally created and used by Constantin Stanislavski from 1911 to 1916 was based on the concept of emotional memory for which an actor focuses internally to portray a character's emotions onstage. Later, between 1934–1938, this technique evolved to a method of physical actions in which emotions are produced through the use of actions. The latter technique is referred to as Stanislavski's system. This approach was developed by Constantin Stanislavski (1863–193, a Russian actor, director and administrator at the Moscow Art Theatre (founded 1897). The system is the result of Stanislavski's many years of efforts to determine how someone can control in performance the most intangible and uncontrollable aspects of human behavior, such as emotions and art inspiration." 179 So what was the last song the ship's band played on the Titanic? In the popular imagination, it was "Nearer My God To Thee", and indeed many survivors said so.

But wireless operator Harold Bride, who stayed at his post until the power failed and escaped in the last lifeboat (the one that floated off upside down) said that the last song he heard was "Autumn".

"Songe d'Automne" was a popular waltz of the day, and is definitely known to have been in the band's repertoire. The melody is gorgeous and unbelievably haunting:

195 As for "Nearer My God To Thee", it turns out that there were three versions of it, set to different music. They're known as "Bethany", "Horbury", and "Propior Deo".

The Bethany version is most widely known to Americans, and is almost certainly NOT the version that was played on Titanic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCEfqj9pDAI&feature=related

The ship's bandleader, Wallace Hartley, was familiar with the other two, which were more popular in England. Here is Horbury:

And indeed, that was the version featured in the 1958 British movie, "A Night to Remember":

That was probably due to there being a link in the text you pasted or the screename pasted, which Pixy allows to print but not paste.

259 Cavuto must scour the left coast to find these idiots they have on his program on Saturday. They are all saying Buffett tax is just a start and we can not eliminate the "deficit" without a tax increase.

Didn't we hear that argument before during Bush-1? Stouid bastards think they still have the same MFM we had then and poeple wioll not remember the Commie-Dems MO.

Raise taxes $1; increase spending $1.5. Raising taxes never works with the Dems. We do NOT have a tax problem, we have a Democrap problem. The deficit under Bush at the height of the Iraq war was $500B. Now the deficit is $1.5T. A factor of 3 increase with the war winding down.

I'm not sure what that means. Young men, when they are off duty, like to hang out in places where there is the availability of booze and women. You do your job, then cut loose, within reason, while on your own time.

Should they have avoided prostitutes? Probably, and it's probably in the regs. But if this is a simple matter of some guy had a hooker get mad at him over a dispute regarding payment, I fail to see how it's a huge scandal. It got blown (no pun intended) out of proportion because of where and when it happened.

No big deal.

I'm of the opinion that the Secret Service is not unlike the military, in that they tend to insulate themselves as much as possible from the political comings and goings in Washington.

In other words, you tend to get professionals, doing their jobs with honor, in spite of the slugs who top their chain of command.

Her husband is a partner at the law firm of Mark NeJame, who has been hired by CNN to provide analysis for the case, one of the most racially charged in the country.

The judge made the disclosure Friday, saying Zimmerman's attorney or the special prosecutor might want her to step down.

No one has made that request yet, but Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, said he might do so next week. If he does, she's almost certain to step aside.

292 223 straight arrows CYA too. And judging character, Jesus despised the corruption hidden by the sanctimonious straight arrows of the day, "whitened sepulchers" who burdened people with all sorts of legal impositions which never applied to those issuing the legal impositions.

Club membership is nothing to base one's integrity upon. Authoritarian and elitist club membership is not going to protect the integrity of human relations that value natural rights.

It's the integrity of Constitutional Governance that is the legal oath required of administrations and governing members of any branch. When constitutional integrity is irrelevant, no surprise to find that all is 'lost'. Exactly what is the Secret Service, for instance, supposed to protect since there is no constitutional integrity 'worth' protecting?

Either our Liberties are being protected by our government, or not. And "straight arrows" have been in on that corruption. Your Mormon priesthood reference is an exemplary authoritarian pyramid scheme. And Mitt isn't the first to not apologize for his wealth.

Yeah, the kind of thing that happens all around the world (no pun intended) with military types. Hookers are legal in many parts of the world. American servicemen (primarily men) use them. Sometimes the transactions don't go smoothly.

Chances are, somebody in your chain of command lectured you before leaving post for the weekend "don't show up in our host country's legal system, if I get a phone call at 2AM to come get you, it's not going to go well for you."

If it happened anyway, your commander would either start UCMJ proceedings on your arse, or if he liked you, maybe you got extra duty or some other such unit punishment.

But this is the SS, and they are the Prez' detail. So it's huge news.

Many of the biggest names of the time died on that ship. This was before Hollywood with CELEBRITIES, so the equivalent today would be a ship that went down with Donald Trump, Brad Pitt, Tiger Woods, Tom Brady, and Steven Spielberg

Another theme is man's hubris, as in "God himself couldn't sink this ship" and "virtually unsinkable", that man himself was besting God and Mother Nature

Forensically it's also a fascinating subject, as countless theories are bandied about how and why the ship sank as it did

Posted by: kbdabear at April 14, 2012 10:43 AM (Y+DPZ)

Ocean liners had been rapidly growing in size for the previous 20 years as design and construction techniques advanced. Titanic was not only the most luxurious ship ever built, it was also the safest. It was cutting-edge, state-of-the-art technology.

Most of us today remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news of the space shuttle Challenger's explosion. Likewise with 9/11.

In the world of 1912, Titanic was a cross between Challenger and 9/11. It was literally unthinkable. People had trouble wrapping their minds around the enormity of the disaster.

The WSJ as a piece up today claiming that The Buffett Rule will increase the deficit, and not just a little bit. This is because they plan to use those new revenues to repeal the AMT, except the take from the Rule won't cover a tenth of the loss of revenue from the AMT.

Now, I'm no fan at all of the AMT and I wouldn't be sorry to see that misguided hunk of junk go on the scrap pile. But this approach is just more tinkering at the edges. What's needed is a reboot.

333 My favorite Titanic story is of the Baker, who started drinking when the berg got hit, then jumped in when the whiskey was kicked, and survived 28 degree water, they say, because of all the alcohol in his system

336 Repealing the AMT...by implementing Buffett.
So in 50 years when we are making about 1mil avg salary thanks to hyperinflation, we'll need a new tax against the rich. Probably called the Upton Rule.

337 looks like the full-time climate of thuggery has finally invaded even the Secret Service.
When your job is to protect anin-your-face fraud, after a while, even many otherwise good people will conclude that honor and decency is a losing game.
Just imagine what is happening in the rest of the government, particularly considering that the natural tendency of all bureaucracies is to enrich themselves at taxpayer expense under the best of circumstances.

I despise the AMT, was caught twice already by it and turbo tax said I wasn't "eligible" to use it and then the IRS sent a letter that says I was. And turbo tax says "sorry about that" and that was it.

340 Most of us today remember where we were and what we were doing when we
heard the news of the space shuttle Challenger's explosion.

True dat....

Second shitter stall, aft head, FF-1078, smoking a cigarette, reading a paperback western.

Like it was yesterday.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at April 14, 2012 11:32 AM (FEUhD)

341 In the world of 1912, Titanic was a cross between Challenger and 9/11.
It was literally unthinkable. People had trouble wrapping their minds
around the enormity of the disaster.

In addition to the great loss of life, the fact that until recently we couldn't examine the wreckage and definitively explain why it sank probably added to the interest. Whenever something that 'couldn't happen' does happen the desire to know why is heightened.

342 When I was in the Navy there was nothing in the UCMJ concerning "cheating on your wife". There was, however, the good old "general article" which encompasses anything that your CO didn't like. It includes 134-2, adultery, that is prejudicial to good order and disipline.

1) To avoid weird formatting (eg. breaks in the middle of a line and hidden HTML code) copy everything into MS notepad first, then cut or copy it from there into the comment box.

2) For italics, bold, strike through and underline, do a search for BBCode and follow the instructions. Use brackets: [ ] instead of sideways carets: < >. Italics, bold, strike through and underline are the only codes accepted here. The commands for them are i, b, s and u, respectively.

3) The URL box (above the comments box) will accept just about any URL except TinyUrls. It probably will kick out other shortened URLs too, however, because I've never tried any other shortened URLs in the box I really don't know. Anything in the URL box that contains HTML coding will be rejected.

4) The name box will only accept names, do not try using HTML code in it.

Four simple rules that, if followed, will produce flawless posts that won't get rejected. The only screw up you can make is forgetting to close your tags.

345 292....Either our Liberties are being protected by our government, or not. And "straight arrows" have been in on that corruption. Your Mormon priesthood reference is an exemplary authoritarian pyramid scheme. And Mitt isn't the first to not apologize for his wealth. ...

Posted by: panzernashorn at April 14, 2012 11:03 AM (lpWVn)

I didn't say anything about the "Mormon priesthood". ....My only reason for mentioning 'Morman' at all, was in providing a contrast to the type of individuals who just got themselves embroiled in a scandal involving hookers.

I'm not a big rah-rah Romney supporter. So I am trying to be positive about the prospect of a Romney administration....and contemplate the more positive aspects thereof.....such as, some secret service agents that are a lot less likely to be engaging in behavior that will embarrass us.

I already said that I don't care what denomination they are. I guess you missed that part.

346 342 -

That may have been the case when I was in as well, I don't know because I wasn't married, so I didn't care.

Honestly, what was and was not in the UCMJ was of little concern. You knew the things you better not do, and found out afterwards, if there was any doubt.

I recall having a senior NCO reading to me, the article about mutiny. Which in any other circumstance would have been hilarious to me, since I was not in the Navy, and couldn't quite wrap my head around the idea of mutiny in any other situation... but I digress. He was reading me the regulation regarding mutiny, because I had very publicly registered my displeasure at a decision by the commander. Over the dumbest nonsense. But he read the whole thing, what could be constituted as mutiny, and what the potential punishments were. I got the message. No more mutiny from me, from that point forward.

347 And that's why, by hook or by crook, the UE is going to go down, some. .... Something like 500k new jobs every month until the election.Personally, I'm talking up the total labor force participation numbers to my acquaintances, not the UE.

They're going to reduce the size of the labor pool. People aren't going to believe rampant job creation if they are still looking. The low-information voters might be deceived if BLS jiggers the labor pool data.

348 My guess is that the Secret Service were either caught in a honey trap or were driven to booze and hookers by having to take orders from this schmuck. Its also possible that they've slid that far from their previously great heights like the FBI has.

349 Obama is far more intimately involved in the high price of gasoline than those agents were with the hookers.

"I don't get the fascination with the Titanic."

It was the very pinnacle of technology at the time. The wireless radio operators were treated like top UNIX programmers are treated today, maybe better.

Imagine if the space shuttle blew up on its first trip, only it had the Rockefellers inside.

And it exemplified the concept of Hubris.

353 #294 Agreed. No reason to substitute all. Someone didn't want those 12 agents on detail.

The question is, was this an excuse for HQ to remove them and put it someone who will watch what Obama does, or was it Obama people setting them up to get rid of them and get friendly agents sent in?

Posted by: Miss Marple at April 14, 2012 01:56 PM (GoIUi)

354 It's simplest to assume NOT a honey-trap at present. If this had been a honey-trap, the ho would not have reported it to the cops - instead, the pimp would have filed that away, and used it for advantage later on. We'd not have heard a word of it.

These "men" were scrapings of pond-scum who never should have been hired, and proved it. Makes one wonder what they've been up to in other places. Makes one wonder if they got into honey-trap situations ELSEWHERE.

But now the Obama Administration looks bad. Add this to Carneybarker saying he doesn't keep track of who goes in or out of the WH.

Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at April 14, 2012 02:13 PM (QTHTd)

356 #354 The reporting to cops thing only makes sense if they were determined to get those agents OUT and replace them with others. The question is was it HQ Secret Service or Obama people.
