NOW Prysydynt: Ann Romney Doesn't Have the "Life Experiences" or "Imagination" To Understand Real Women

Video at Newsbusters, if you can hack it. Quote:

What would we be saying if Hillary Clinton [sic] had said this: that Ann Romney has never, has not worked for pay outside the home a day in her life? That's my understanding that's an accurate statement, and that raises the exact issue that Hilary Rosen was trying to get to, which is do Mr. & Mrs. Romney have the kind of life experience and if not, the imagination, to really understand what most American families are going through right now?

There are two kinds of appeal.

First, an intellect-based appeal that one's policies will favor targeted voters. And rival policies will hurt targeted voters. I don't agree that NOW's policies will favor anyone, but they can make the argument.

The second appeal is emotional/empathetic and claims "I'm just like you. I understand your problems. Without even getting into policy details, you know you can trust me, because I'm just like you and I understand you."

Right?

The attacks on Ann Romney are largely being made on that second basis -- she "hasn't worked a day in her life." (She's different! Don't you hate her?!) She lacks "life experience." (She's not a full woman like us! Don't you hate her?!) She lacks "imagination." (Her choice to be a dumb stay at home mom has cramped her mind! Don't you hate her!?)

This second line of attack is even weaker than the intellectual one, though. Because, I ask you:

What does the president of NOW, a media gadfly making (spitballing) over a half a million dollars per year, know about the "struggles of average families just trying to get by?"

If this woman was ever struggling -- and I doubt she was; these organizations tend to be headed by the idle rich or at least those so comfortable they can volunteer for years without a salary -- it's been a very long time since she's struggled.

So what does she know of "the struggles of average families"? Did she read a White Paper on it?

Diane Sawyer was asking on Twitter what questions she ought to ask Mitt and Ann Romney.

I was annoyed, because Diane Sawyer is the Queen of Soap Opera Acting Empathy. It annoys me to no end that these Morning "News" Women employ the cheapest and most obvious of soap opera acting techniques -- the heroically squinted eyes, the weary low voice, the sad shake of the head, as they ask their "empathy" questions, like "Mrs. Romney, do you get it? Do you understand that women are hurting?"

Squint, weary whisper, shake of the head.

What does Diane Sawyer know of it? When's the last time she "struggled"? She is a millionaire in her own right (and has been forever) and is furthermore married to a Hollywood director (Mike Nichols).

Mrs. Romney, do you understand the struggles of an average housewife like myself when her husband's film Regarding Henry receives poor critical reception and underperforms at the box office?

A long time ago I read some media critic -- in TVGuide, of all places; this was literally 30+ years ago -- noting that newsmen (they were once all men) attempted two different types of personas: The Hero persona, in which the newsman attempted to project empathy and a common touch and, well, a heroic commitment to fighting, and the AntiHero persona, which is not well-named at all, but was basically a persona in which the newsman kept emotional distance from the news and just read it straight.

Although there are plenty of male "Hero" anchors and reporters, this tendency is especially pronounced in these Morning Personalities.

And it's a deception. It's false. These are soap opera tricks of the crudest sort engineered to up one's Q Rating (likability) and thus one's Nielsen ratings.

Diane Sawyer is a fraudulent woman.

When she goes through her soap opera routine of the head shake, the squint, and the weary voice, I wish to God someone had the balls to ask her how much her apartment cost, and if she paid cash for it. (Guess-- Over $3 or $4 million, and yes, she almost certainly did.)

Diane, what do you know of struggling? Are we supposed to believe that because you squint, shake your head, and use a stagey low weary voice that you've suddenly transformed into Luka (I live on the second floor)?

It's just patently dishonest, and they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

$10 Million? A commenter says her apartment is valued at $10 million, and she bought it from... Robert Redford.

And he's right.

So yeah, let me see that friggin' head-shake and weary squint, Diane.

13 I'm surprised anyone gives a shit.

All these politicians live distant lives from us.

Of course Ann doesn't understand what it's like to be a suburban housewife. She had illegal immigrants pruning her rose bushes and I'm sure plenty of people to cook and clean.

I'm not complaining (other than the illegals thing). More power to her. Make some money and give people some jobs. Be as far from a chore-doer as possible.

Who cares?

Plenty of Americans would love a job washing Ann Romney's dishes and scrubbing her linen.

Because the Romneys made tremendous wealth for themselves, many other people got jobs.

That matters a lot more than some weird solidarity with me when I shuffle to work in the morning.

I fundamentally do not understand why this is a discussion point at all. Obama's record is not helping Americans, so who cares about Ann Romney's resume?

36 Imagination? Wow, just wow.

Look, I don't *know* a damned thing about Ann Romney's day-to-day life, now or when she was raising her kids. Nor do I care. If she's like the LDS women around here, I expect that in addition to maintaining the home and raising the kids, she spent many hours a week in church activities. Depending on her calling, she could have been a scout leader, a young women's society organizer, the relief society president, a teacher, etc etc. From what I've seen, and I mean this is the best possible way, the men around *think* they're running things, but really it's the women.

At any rate, Mrs. Romney seems like a nice woman -- certainly at least as nice as Michelle Obama -- and

SHE IS NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!

That said, this was an expected line of attack (that seems to have misfired) and there will be others equally repulsive and personal in nature. I am waiting for them to roll out the disenfranchised and miserable ex-Mormons, for one thing. (A favorite tactic against Catholics.) Brace yourselves for the harrowing tales of woe from people who left the LDS church, because I'm pretty sure it's coming.

47 I understand the frustration involved with the media bullshit, but the reason it persists is that there isn't any good way to call them on it. Ann Romney could easily ask any of the questions posed by Ace, but then she comes off as antagonistic and unlikeable. Same for Mitt. Challenging the premise and identifying hypocrisy are great tools in certain contexts (like Newt in the debates - to a point), but I just can't see turning the tables on a morning show host going well for the guest.

Until the average soft-headed viewer understands the game, things won't change. And the Romneys have more to lose than gain by challenging the status quo of content-lite "news" programming.

Bingo-bango. That's the main construct of the 99% meme. It was meant all along to be used politically, no matter who the "uncaring, out of touch" Republican candidate was going to be.

And just why can't a rich person be president? That's what they're claiming. Do we want a poor, unsuccessful person running our government, country and economy?

Lookie what I just found by googlin:

Q: You’d be different from Laura Bush?

A: Well, you know, I don’t know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good. But I don’t know that she’s ever had a real job — I mean, since she’s been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things. And I’m older, and my validation of what I do and what I believe and my experience is a little bit bigger — because I’m older, and I’ve had different experiences. And it’s not a criticism of her. It’s just, you know, what life is about.

As someone who has been both a full-time mom and full-time in work force, I know we all have valuable experiences that shape who we are. I appreciate and honor Mrs. Bush’s service to the country as first lady and am sincerely sorry I had not remembered her important work in the past.”

I think there are two components to it.

The other is to try to push folks on the Right, or folks whom they can pretend are on our "side" (like Pat Buchanan), into over-reacting and doing/saying something outrageous in response.

Because they have the media to echo and magnify everything, it really can be effective, imho.

Some people will prefer Ann over Michelle once they get to know her and some of those people might be folks who are currently kind of meh about Mitt. It's not how I'd cast my vote, but they might be swayed toward Romney based on that. However, if those soft voters see attacks on Michelle, they might flip to or stick with Obama just out of a sense of fairness to her.

228 "Really?

Posted by: BackwardsBoy at April 13, 2012 12:24 PM"

Let me explain what I'm saying.

I don't respect politicians for the most part. The idea of admiring such people just because they oppose politicians I like even less is not enough.

If they have a truly badass record of standing up for something, like say Scott Walker, then yeah, I start to admire them. But just talking the talk really well? Nope.

So I don't mind admitting that our side's politicians generally are not super great. Character attacks on our side's politicians don't really matter to me very much. Folks who put their stock in the greatness of politicians are sure to be fooled all the time. Give me a moron who just won't sign a budget unless it's balanced, and I'd be a lot happier than with the coolest and nicest dude who is willing to compromise on that point.

I think Obama is also probably a really good family man. He stupidly thinks fundamentally changing this great country and teaming up with radicals is the way to a better world, but he loves his kids and his wife. There are plenty of Republicans who have strayed from such critical personal ideals. But I don't care, because I don't vote on that basis. I vote on what's going to get the deficit down and the jobs back.

I don't think Ann Romney is a bad person. She's impressive in many ways and I hope she's the next first lady. But I also don't care about that at all.

Partially. The other part is that they reject any sort of femininity as selling out to the patriarchy. If you get dressed up and put on makeup, you're in competition with your "sisters" and you're trying to appeal to men. At least, that is what they think. Most conservative women seem to understand that how you present yourself to other people reflects your opinion of them, and to dress and look nice is to show respect and self confidence.

241 I think Obama is also probably a really good family man. He stupidly
thinks fundamentally changing this great country and teaming up with
radicals is the way to a better world, but he loves his kids and his
wife.

Bullshit. Total, unequivocal bullshit.

This guy showed how much he cared for family when he used the trip to Hawaii back in 2008 to seal up his birth certificate instead of spending any time with his poor, typical racist white granny who raised him (when he wasn't being raised as a muslim in the largest muslim nation in the world).

Barky doesn't give a shit about his family. He uses them all the time to further his own career - in a way that few others have, not proud of some accomplishments of theirs, but as examples of how America is fat, babies are punishments and the like.

And Barky never cared for making America a better anything. He just wants America and Americans to pay for the fact that he's an inept retard who is constantly confused by everything around him.

Should I try CLR or something to try to get rid of the gunk?

243 Warning you all, the Diane Sawyer interview will be all soft focus and warm hugs between Mitt and Ann. Ann will do most of the talking, Mitt will look down and smile shyly.

It's going to make you want to scream "What about the f'in economy!!!!" at the TV.

But it will be the right strategy. The Dems are scared of losing the single woman vote. They own that vote, but they are soft this cycle because they are one of the hardest hit demographics by the economy. Their unemployment rate is way up in the double digits.

Mitt will be fighting on the Dem turf, and trying to chip away their base, while his base of men and married women are safely in his camp.

255 Here's the big feminist complaint about Ann Romney: she met Mitt in high school and only dated one other guy before marrying him. Ergo, she needed a man to complete her and chose that man very early in her life. And even worse, she converted to a notoriously "anti-woman" religion when she married him. The fact that she's still pretty happy with him 45 years later, and that he has been faithful to her, doesn't really matter. Girls are supposed to "have a career" and "figure out who we are" before settling down.

In addition to what huerfano said, the other reason is we want Romney to have a "mandate." Big popular vote totals (or margins) provide that. It will make it easier for Congress to move some conservative legislation that first year, imho.

I still have a gut feeling he's a pretty good father and husband, though maybe that V. Baker stuff was true I just don't see it.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter to me anyway. Assume, for the sake of argument, that Ann Romney worships the devil and Obama is truly a pleasant and kind man who sincerely wants to do good. It doesn't matter, because Obama has failed to administrate this government in any proper way. Fast and Furious, years without a budget, skyrocketing debt, apology tours, screwing Israel, Iran getting nukes... Who cares if this is a nice guy?

I feel like the left generally wins this 'who seems nicer' argument. Even that racist Jimmy Carter was seen as a swell guy for some reason. And the right generally wins the 'who is actually doing a decent job' argument. The media can distort personalities, but they can't distort whether or not your cousin can get a job or what the debt level is or how far along Iran's nuclear ambitions are.

So I just stop caring which of these candidates, let alone their wives, is the neato duper likeable guy.

I don't care. Romney needs to beat Obama because Obama's policies and performance must be rejected. His character has nothing to do with it. For me.

There's really no way an average president, at worst, won't be a huge improvement over one of the worst presidents.

But on a gut level this is more about voting against Obama. I do hope the GOP nominates a record that I can support, instead of someone I merely use to vote against a democrat again. Maybe I'll get lucky and that record will be Romney's in 2016. But the primary is over now. Some are doctors', a lot of lawyers, financial industry and yet, they are planning to stay home with their kids when they have them. I've heard more than one discussion between a daughter and a mother wherein the mother basically says "if that's the way you feel, why did I spend all this money on an education for you then?" It's not an easy discussion cause often in those discussions the mom worked cause her mom stayed home and she was ashamed of her own mom. So she was a big NOW supporter and working woman, raising my peers. So, they don't take it too well when you tell them you plan on staying home when you have kids, they view it as an attack on them and worse they view it as going backwards and fear that you are becoming your grandmother, a woman they were so ashamed of for staying home that they joined now and worked. So, most of my peers avoid the conversation and move many states away from working mom.

a 'individual mandate" is legal at the state level. It is unconstitutional at the federal level -because that power is not clearly defined to be a power of Congress in the enumerated powers. Get a pair of Vice-grips or even channel-lock pliers on the nut and cramp it down a few times. This'll flex the nylon nut and let the WD-40 get to the threads, plus it should bust off a lot of the crud. Also, you need a large screwdriver, the 18" long ones known as a South-side door key; that should fit in the screw slot and give you more zork to turn it. If you have a steady hand drilling the center of the screw head with a drill slightly larger than the diameter of the nylon bolt will work, but you need to keep pliers on the nut so it doesn't just spin around. And use a slow speed on the drill; get too crazy and you could crack the toilet.

I really think these bitches miss the real point here, which is that the fabulously wealthy Ann Romney has learned how to manage hundreds of millions in family funds without squandering it, even saving enough so her husband could self fund to the tune of some 30 millions inhis last failed campaign.
As such she will be a great addition to the national ruling class as she won't feel it necessary to head out monthly on taxpayer funded lavish vacations and drag her non paying tag along relatives and Chi-townfriends with at taxpayer expense. Mitt and Ann pay for their own stuff thus don't expect the taxpayers to foot the bills for trips to spain , hawaii, kids to Meheho, numerous wed. night parties and non stop campaigning on the taxpaying public like the current Cousin Eddie Clan does.
Plus her ass is not wider than the back of a greyhound bus!

293 "272 Romney's never been average at anything. Why do you think he would be an average President?"

I said at worst he's be average. That's a compliment. And I think George HW Bush and Richard Nixon were also very dedicated men who amounted to average at best performance. Nixon actually was far below average on domestic policy.

You aren't understanding my overall argument. The badassitude or awesomeness of a person does not translate well to being a great president. I know Romney has accomplished a great deal as a businessman, but if you're saying he was an above average governor we simply disagree on performance standards or even the worth of Gov Romney's proposals.

In fact, Bill Clinton was a high performing and intelligent man who micromanaged and was too liberal, so his performance was mixed.

I agree it's possible Mitt will be a great president. At worst average, at best great. We have to pass this bill before we'll see what's in it. One of the bugs with him is no one is sure exactly what his true policy views are. But at worst, he's going to be a compromising middle of the road guy with average performance, and that's way better than the Obama administration.

I don't want an ubermensch leader to worship. I want a balanced budget and a reformed entitlement system. I don't care if the leader who does this is drunk all day and has no friends and never graduated from high school. Romney already has my vote simply because he's not Obama, but he does not impress me as a politician until he balances the budget. I'd say the same of every single other politician. And to be clear, Clinton never balanced the budget. That was BS because they didn't count entitlements.

If the screws are nylon you could just drill them out like you're drilling through a lock. Pro Tip: Make sure the drill bit is SMALLER than the hole you're drilling!

295 Personally i think that Ann Romney should hire a spokesperson and just say to these bitches, "look I am a busy muther would you please direct all future inquiries to my spokesperson Dick Cheney as he now has the heart of a warrior, 17 year old Trayvon Crayon Martin andhe is ready to take on all cummers, also he is now half white too!

296 I don't give a rip if the Romneys understand me. I just want him to understand the problems we face as a nation and offer some solid solutions. I don't understand the life of a crack whore, but I'm pretty sure I could tell her what she needs to do in order to not be one anymore. Geez, this is asinine.

297 You can get those drill bits that sort of screw into an old screw, so that you can unscrew it without damaging the threads.

Thanks. I'll have to buy one if it comes to that.

So much for surprising my husband with a new throne when he gets home. This is shaping up to be an all day project.

298 See, after you watch that whole wolfie interview, you become really annoyed cause you begin to see how deliberate hilary's alleged accidental firestorm really was.

try slipping an orange stick in there to move things around with a little nail polish remover on the tip. Once you loosen it up it will be easier to unscrew.

300 It's a full on media blitz against Ann. The more media pieces that come out attacking her the more I think Obama did set it all up. http://tinyurl.com/7azuyk4

No doubt about it. But I don't think the execution came off exactly as planned.

302 I could be wrong because I misjudged how effective the media's sliming of Sarah Palin would be in 2008, but...

I'd much rather have them wasting their ammo on Ann Romney as Mitt.

303 Diane Sawyer is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable newswoman.

She has descended into the "soft-focus" stage of her career, where she will soon assume Baba Wawa's role as the aging crone desperately clinging to the shreds of her power, the Norma Desmond of her ilk...

304 So, Palin Not staying home to raise kids exclusively = bad, Ann Romney doing what you complained Palin didn't do= bad. All conservative women=Bad... or just the better looking women?

305 I would have voted for Romney in an "anyone but Obama" way. Now I will happily vote for Romney as a result of these attacks on his wife. To attack a breast cancer survivor as unable to identify with women seems beyond politically stupid.

307 If only Ann Romney would fight for the right to jab sharp metal objects into the skulls of unborn babies, she would then be an acceptable woman in our eyes.

309 Wonder if Sarah Palin has any advice for mitt and ann before they go to Dianne's interview? Like maybe asking "so where are you going to edit our answers to get the most bang for the democratic buck?"

Posted by: cassie at April 13, 2012 02:49 PM (oZfic)

310 IIRC, Diane Sawyer came by her husband the same way so many good respectable Liberal women with "life experience" to spare do-- she stole him from another dowdy liberal broad (Nora Ephron, I think).

There was a funny gossip item not long ago that said that Dianne was furious over how flirtatious the Interview between Nichols and Julia Roberts he did for Vanity Fair was. I guess it sucks when it's not you he's cheating with anymore.

313 Standard Marxist indoctrination teaches: "the personal is political." That's what Dems are doing, and we're falling for it. Please stop falling into their trap. Stop reacting, stop letting them dictate the terms, because we will lose. They can insult us, horrify us, evoke all kinds of emotional reactions in us, but never forget: it is about Obama's record and the issues, and that's it.

314 Strangely, Terry O'Neill makes under $50K from NOW and another $40K+ from a related organization, so just under $100K.

That might relate to the fact that NOW is broke, reporting negative net assets on its 2010 Form 990.

315 So my stay-at-home mom isn't a "real woman"?
Funny, my mom saw thru the Women's Movement back in the '70s and she knew then that they hated stay-at-home wives/moms. She told me that back then Phyllis Schlafley would come on TV and she'd find herself agreeing with her and not the Gloria Steinems of the world. She's always known that NOW is anti-woman and anti-family; and that was before she became politically aware/born-again Christian.

318 "The attacks on Ann Romney are largely being made on that second basis -- she "hasn't worked a day in her life." (She's different! Don't you hate her?!) She lacks "life experience." (She's not a full woman like us! Don't you hate her?!) She lacks "imagination." (Her choice to be a dumb stay at home mom has cramped her mind! Don't you hate her!?)"
The proper response to this line is (while leaning waaaay into someones face) "LIKE MY MOTHER! YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH MY MOTHER?"

Yep, you sound just like most of the dem voters:19I havent really been paying attention to this race and wont till November 7th, but I can definitely see Romney making his wife a campaign issue. Hey, the guy's lost most of his elections for a reason.Just how many electionsssssss has he lost? 1.What a horse pucky you are! Don't pay any attention to the issues and just go in and pull the lever. Thats why we have 0b0z0 now. Thanks!

321 Feminism: The radical belief that feminists are women too.

Isn't it amazing how blatantly Marxist front organizations can pass themselves off as women's advocacy groups, and no one calls them on it?

I think we need a new faux civil rights movement, complete with rent seeking organizations that will wax psychotic over the inequities of ordinary existence.

How about we pretend that redheads are an oppressed minority, in need of special treatment and recompense for historical wrongs committed by other people in other times, long in their graves and beyond all earthly justice. As such, people who vaguely resemble the oppressors today will be made to pay in their stead.

Posted by: Lee Reynolds at April 14, 2012 03:18 PM (rJMw2)

322 You know what? Let's pretend all the bad things they are saying about Ann Romney are true.

Guess what? I don't f---ing care. I am talking about whether to elect Mitt not Ann. I could give a rat's behind about the spouse of a candidate.

I don't like seeing attacks on Michelle Obama, i don't like seeing attacks on Ann Romney. Seriously, unless the spouse has a few dead hobos in the basement or raises the concern that s/he will bring corruption to the white house, I don't care. Their job is to pick up some innocuous pet cause and push it. And yes, Mrs. O telling kids to eat better, exercise more and lose weight is innocuous. Her husband might shift from asking us to telling us, but Mrs. O is just asking.

Of course, otoh, if Hillary Clinton runs for president, i think her husband matters because i think he is a crook and i think he will infect her time with crookedness--and that is assuming she is not a crook too, and i suspect she is.

It really comes down to a bargain. The first spouses promise not to do anything important enough to impact on my assessment of the candidate, and i promise not to care overly much about them. And i think a Bill and Hill Clinton redux would break that rule.
