It's Tough To Be Green These Days
Because the bloom is coming off the Global Warming Climate Change Uncertainty rose and the entire environmental movement in general:
A new Gallup poll reports that Americans are still broadly skeptical of the Green agenda, currently putting economic growth ahead of the environment by 49 percent to 41 percent. And moderates are increasingly joining conservatives in the opinion that economic growth should be a priority even if it incurs some environmental damage.
It turns out that Green policies are luxuries that people will indulge in during boom times but not so much in a prolonged recession. Even the young seem to be losing their enthusiasm for environmentalism - well other than as a status symbol signaling refined tastes:
[Jean] Twenge found that today's high school seniors and college freshmen make far less effort to help the environment than baby boomers did at that age. Compared with boomers and Generation X-ers, Gen Y-ers are the least willing to cut down on driving and electricity use. "There was a lot more questioning of materialism in the 1970s. Now it's just like, Let's all live like the Kardashians," she said. . .We do stuff not to save the planet as much as to look as if we're saving the planet. That means I need to spend a lot more on my food, clothing and appliances and let everyone know about it.
In fact it looks like we already passed Peak AGW concern a few years ago. But don't worry - there'll be a new world-wide environmental crisis coming along any second now.
And the usual suspects will have their usual solutions on how to save the world AND run your life.
Oh and don't forget that this Saturday evening will be Human Achievement Hour so get those naughty incandescent bulbs aglowin' and tires aburnin'.
Why is Newt Gingrich Still Called Speaker Gingrich
Newt Gingrich can be called many things: garrulous, grandiose, philandering. But one thing he should not be called is "Mr. Speaker." Gingrich ceased to be entitled to that title when he left the House on Jan. 3, 1999. But you would never know it from the obsequious way journalists have addressed him during the campaign, where "Mr. Speaker" and "Speaker Gingrich" have become standard.
This is one thing that has always irked me a little - former office-holders keeping their previous title for life. I don't mind the occasional honorific on special occasions but why should we be expected to refer to Barbara Boxer perpetually as Senator Boxer even when she's no longer a senator? It certainly wasn't this way for the original US office-holders:

The Mysterious Case of Air Force Major Jill Metzger
It's been almost six years since Air Force Major Jill Metzger disappeared from a shopping mall while deployed to Manas AB, Kyrgyzstan in September 2006. Metzger resurfaced a few days later, with an incredible tale of kidnapping, over-powering her abductors and racing almost 30 miles to freedom (the Air Force officer happens to be a champion marathon runner).
Yet shortly afterwards it became clear that there were big holes in her story and very likely the entire incident had been faked, possibly to cover up an abortion.
-- Kyrgyz authorities doubted her story from the start, and even interviewed a local abortion doctor who claimed he performed that procedure on Major Metzger during the time she was missing.
-- A source inside the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), which probed Metzger's disappearance, told Militarycoruption.com that the USAF personnel officer flunked at least two polygraphs after her escape. One exam, administered at her home station of Moody AFB, GA, showed clear signs of deception.
Yet despite this she was able to avoid any major repercussions and now her career appears to be on the upswing again:
The other reason is rooted in Major Metzger's own career. After being placed on the "temporarily retired" list for a couple of years, she returned to active duty in 2010, at Andrews AFB, MD. She's probably up for Lieutenant Colonel, and resolving the Kyrgyz matter would improve her prospects for promotion.

Finally made it home, finding my copy of ME3 waiting for me. I try to install it like a giddy little kid. The updater for EA's Origin service tells me I don't have an internet connection. Pretty cool that I can download the damn update without an internet connection.
It's the power of MY MIND.
Anyway, no clue what the problem is, so I'll have to call them tomorrow. I hate this online connection crap.

Quick aside a couple of years back one of Microsoft's wunderkind had his yacht in New Orleans for some event...Yacht is an understatement. this thing could have been classified as a corvette or a frigate in some navies. Anyhoo the chopper that lived on the boat needed some maintenance so they flew it our shop. I met the mechanic and helped him do what needed to be done. What a frigging dream job. He follows the yacht around the world making sure the aircraft is ready to go and fixes the minor stuff and arranges with local service providers for anything he cant handle by himself. I tried to stuff my fat ass into the baggage compartment for the ride back to the boat but they found me out. Fuckers.

Yeah I do, actually. It is "real science" that follows the funding priorities of government agencies, granted, but it is still science. Political agenda driven pseudoscience like "climate science" is more the exception than the rule. Funding agencies explicitly reward big transformative ideas that have a sound scientific basis. Yes they are ideas that are more likely to be in "green energy" than in nuclear energy research but they are still scientifically valid ideas.

There is some truth to this but IMO the "rebels" who are ostracized for challenging the established order tend to be either (a) cranks who shouldn't be listened to anyway, or (b) generally unsavvy people who don't mind picking fights when it's not necessary.
Like in all things there is a "formal" way to do things and an "informal" way. The formal way is to challenge the established order in the open literature and start a war. The informal way is to have discussions outside of the open literature with the leaders in the field, at conferences at the like, and you make your case that way.
Yes there are some real assholes in science just like in every field but most of the ones I have come across have actually been quite reasonable and willing to listen to unorthodox ideas.

Back when Tower Records still existed ... i'm that old, yes, I used to go in and force myself to get CDs from different countries and groups I've never heard of {just asked the workers for some recommendations} just to try new sounds ... only a few that I absolutely hated to the point of giving away ...

I think the article is a gross oversimplification. It may be true for people who consider music nothing more than a soundtrack for life, and who place more of an emphasis on novelty than on quality.
But a music lover never stops loving good music, and I still find it quite a thrill to hear something new that strikes my fancy.

Up to the White Album, I listened to a lot of Beatles....but then my parents became concerned about reports of drug-use and wouldn't let me listen to their albums while not supervised -- so I switched over to a different band with a lead singer from San Diego -- The Doors.
One of my teachers in school played this really cool music he'd found during class. I asked what it was, and he said it was probably Walter Carlos' "Switched-On Bach" (it wasn't -- it was Ruth White's "Short Circuits") I started chasing Carlos albums and ended up falling into Classical in a big way.
After the movie, "The Sting" came out, there was a revival of interest in ragtime.....which the folks got on albums by the New England Ragtime Ensemble, and I learned to play on piano. After suffering from massive ridicule through my junior High and HS years, I decided to get with the program -- and picked up Boston "Boston"; Jefferson Starship, "Earth"; Fleetwood Mac, "Rumours"; and Rush, "A Farewell to Kings".
Going to college, I started collecting 10cc and Little Feat, and occasionally going prog with PG-era Genesis.
Things didn't really get bad until Media Player.....

Been there, arhooley. Make sure you stay on top of every detail. I was tortured by an unnecessary delay I could have prevented just by riding their asses. I was "terminal" for a month until I wasn't. Fucking imbeciles (me included).

That won't be a problem. I am writing it, and I will probably use a nom de plume. Believe me, I don't want any followers. Another "it's the gourd," "no, it's the sandal" argument is definitely not for me.
What I really hope to do is to prepare a text that allows proper thinking people to claim the high ground and absolutely be disdainful of the shit-fer-brains crowd all day, every day. I want to strip them of their sense of belonging and cool. I want them to absolutely FEEL us condescending to them and not have one damn thing they can do about it.

This is not completely true because the Hospital will still bill you for it and attempt to collect. Here they will set up a payment schedule and turn it over to bill collectors.
In any case, this wouldn't be a problem if they changed the law on what the ER has to do.
